Did you know that Guiyang can make water visible even when it disappears underground? Karst vocabulary follows water through limestone, Qingyan follows people through stone streets, and textile vocabulary follows skill through cloth. Each route rewards precise observation.
These 100 expressions cover karst forms, Qingyan Ancient Town, textile and dyeing traditions, mountain-city weather, parks and food. Cultural labels should remain specific to the community and maker, while weather, cave and wildlife guidance must be checked on the day.

The list uses simplified Chinese and standard Mandarin Hanyu Pinyin. Names and short descriptive phrases sit beside single words because each has a useful travel purpose. These expressions are learning aids, not a promise that every sign uses the same wording. Save the full Chinese destination name and verify its address on a current official map.

Pronunciation: listen to the whole expression
Practise Guìyáng, Qīngyán and Qiánlíngshān. 贵 and 桂 are different characters even though both may sound guì. 布依 is Bùyī. 喀斯特 is kāsītè, the Mandarin transliteration of karst.
Tone marks show pitch: mā is high and level, má rises, mǎ is low and may dip then rise in isolation, and mà falls. An unmarked neutral syllable is lighter. Names generally retain dictionary tones; short ready-to-say phrases may mark common connected-speech changes, including 不 → bú before a fourth tone and changes to 一. The first of two third tones usually rises in speech. Practise a whole short expression, not just isolated sounds.
Five friendly questions to practise
| English question | Chinese writing | Hanyu Pinyin |
|---|---|---|
| How did water shape this limestone feature? | 水怎样形成这个石灰岩形态? | Shuǐ zěnyàng xíngchéng zhè ge shíhuīyán xíngtài? |
| Is this lane used by local residents? | 这条巷道是当地居民通行的吗? | Zhè tiáo xiàngdào shì dāngdì jūmín tōngxíng de ma? |
| Who made this textile pattern? | 这个纺织纹样是谁制作的? | Zhè ge fǎngzhī wényàng shì shéi zhìzuò de? |
| Is there a current rain warning? | 现在有降雨预警吗? | Xiànzài yǒu jiàngyǔ yùjǐng ma? |
| Does this sour soup contain meat? | 这份酸汤里有肉吗? | Zhè fèn suāntāng lǐ yǒu ròu ma? |
Choose the question that fits your situation, listen to the answer and ask for clarification when needed. A vocabulary list supports communication; it cannot confirm an ingredient, opening arrangement, transport route or permission on somebody else’s behalf.
Karst: follow the relationship between water and rock
Guiyang's landscape includes karst terrain. The vocabulary of limestone, dissolution, caves and underground water helps learners describe processes rather than treating every rock as a mysterious formation.
Use an official cave diagram and name only the feature it identifies. Keep to the path, avoid touching deposits and follow lighting and access instructions. A vocabulary page cannot assess cave safety.

Qingyan: a town of stone routes and living access
Guiyang's official account places Qingyan Ancient Town in Huaxi and traces its founding to the Ming period. Stone streets, gates and buildings are part of a living town rather than an empty set.
Follow public lanes and respect residents' access. Describe paving, slope and route before claiming a defensive purpose. Use the official history or a site label for dates and building identification.
Guiyang official account: Qingyan Ancient Town
Craft: name the community and the maker
Guizhou textile displays may include Miao embroidery, Bouyei weaving, wax-resist dyeing and other traditions. These are not one interchangeable decorative style.
Read the museum label for community, maker, material and context. Ask before photographing a demonstration. If a maker explains a motif, attribute that explanation instead of assigning a universal meaning from appearance.

Qianling Mountain Park: wildlife needs distance
Guiyang's official park material presents Qianling Mountain Park as a major urban natural space. Where macaques are present, a visitor's useful vocabulary should include distance and non-feeding.
Observe from a safe distance, secure food and follow park notices. Do not feed, touch or pose beside wildlife. A close photograph is not evidence of safe behaviour.

Food and weather: ask about today's reality
Qingyan and Guiyang food names are useful anchors, but recipes differ. Mountain-city rain and humidity also affect a visit in ways that an undated promotional sentence cannot predict.
Ask about the particular serving's ingredients and check a live weather warning. In writing, say whether you tasted, observed or studied a source image. Keep a backup indoor learning route when rain changes the plan.

Turn one city moment into clearer English
Try: 'The cave was beautiful.' → 'Water had shaped the limestone chamber.' → 'The official diagram identified an underground-water route.' → 'I kept the process explanation separate from the wet surface I observed.' Each fence replaces vague wonder with a supported relationship.
Use eduKate’s Fencing Method to test each addition: what has it clarified, and does the evidence support it?
Compare a stone street with a karst passage. Both involve rock and movement, but one is a built civic route and the other a geological environment. Name agency and timescale carefully.
A real journal should distinguish what you observed from what a label or source explained. Mark an imagined account as imagined. The Trip to China writing guide helps you connect one incident into an account; the English 200-word bank supplies meanings and original examples for the English writing itself.
Before, during and after: a small learning plan
Before: choose ten words from one route and check the weather. During: record one visible feature, one label and one respectful-action rule. After: write a paragraph that identifies the community, maker or source behind any cultural explanation.
For parents, ask what the child noticed before supplying a new word. For teachers, ask learners to label an observation, a sourced explanation and an open question. At home, use an adult-selected photograph or official museum page. No purchase or overseas journey is required, and the task is not an exam or fluency guarantee.
Questions travellers often ask
Do I need to learn all 100 entries?
No. Choose ten that fit one scene. Use the shared essentials for basic exchanges and return to this list when your question becomes more specific.
Is this the local dialect?
No. This is standard Mandarin. Guiyang and Guizhou have multiple local languages and varieties; community-specific pronunciation may differ.
Are all the entries single words?
No. The list includes single words, proper names and short contextual expressions. The English column identifies what each means; the Chinese and pinyin help you recognise or say it.
Can I use this guide from home?
Yes. Study a reliable photograph or official collection page, attribute the source and write a short account. Do not invent a personal journey when your evidence comes from a picture.
Can I call every Guizhou textile pattern Miao embroidery?
No. Identify the community, technique, maker and object from a reliable label or explanation. Do not merge Miao, Bouyei and other traditions into one category.
