Did you know that a museum room and a red cliff can give you two completely different ways to read Zunyi? One asks when a decision happened. The other asks how a landscape took shape. Bring a little curiosity, choose ten expressions, and let a clearer question lead the way.
This guide explores Zunyi's conference heritage and the wider municipality, including Chishui. These are separate destinations, so use the names to build a realistic journey rather than treating every place as one walk. The 100 entries are a selected learning bank, not a frequency ranking.

The list uses simplified Chinese and standard Mandarin Hanyu Pinyin. Names and short descriptive phrases sit beside single words because each has a useful travel purpose. These expressions are learning aids, not a promise that every sign uses the same wording. Save the full Chinese destination name and verify its address on a current official map.
1–10: Place names for the wider Zunyi area
Save the precise destination name. A municipality, a district and a scenic area describe different scales.

Pronunciation: listen to the whole expression
Zūnyì begins with z, while Chìshuǐ begins with ch. Both sounds need listening practice. 茅台 is Máotái, 仁怀 is Rénhuái and 苟坝 is Gǒubà. 羊肉粉 is yángròufěn. The pinyin in this guide represents standard Mandarin, not a transcription of every local accent.
Tone marks show pitch: mā is high and level, má rises, mǎ is low and may dip then rise in isolation, and mà falls. An unmarked neutral syllable is lighter. Names generally retain dictionary tones; short ready-to-say phrases may mark common connected-speech changes, including 不 → bú before a fourth tone and changes to 一. The first of two third tones usually rises in speech. Practise a whole short expression, not just isolated sounds.
Five friendly questions to practise
| English question | Chinese writing | Hanyu Pinyin |
|---|---|---|
| Which document explains this conference decision? | 哪份文件解释这次会议的决策? | Nǎ fèn wénjiàn jiěshì zhè cì huìyì de juécè? |
| Which part of the Danxia landscape are we looking at? | 我们正在看丹霞地貌的哪个部分? | Wǒmen zhèngzài kàn Dānxiá dìmào de nǎge bùfen? |
| How far is this waterfall entrance from Chishui City? | 这个瀑布入口离赤水市有多远? | Zhè ge pùbù rùkǒu lí Chìshuǐ Shì yǒu duō yuǎn? |
| What is the broth in these mutton rice noodles made from? | 这碗羊肉粉的汤底用什么做的? | Zhè wǎn yángròufěn de tāngdǐ yòng shénme zuò de? |
| Is this conference-room arrangement original or reconstructed? | 这间会议室的陈设是原物还是复原的? | Zhè jiān huìyìshì de chénshè shì yuánwù háishi fùyuán de? |
Choose the question that fits your situation, listen to the answer and ask for clarification when needed. A vocabulary list supports communication; it cannot confirm an ingredient, opening arrangement, transport route or permission on somebody else’s behalf.
A conference site gives history an address
The Zunyi Conference took place in January 1935 during the Long March. The China Culture account identifies its historic site as a two-storey building. That gives your reading a concrete starting point: a date, a place and an event.
Try a three-line note: name the meeting, record its date, then identify the source for one explanation of its significance. A furnished room can help you imagine the setting, but a document or curator's account supports the historical claim. Ask how the exhibit distinguishes original objects from reconstructed arrangements.

Chishui opens a different Zunyi lesson
Chishui is one of the six component areas in UNESCO's China Danxia World Heritage property. The property concerns landscapes formed in red sedimentary rocks through processes including uplift, weathering and erosion. It is a geological story, rather than a description of every red hill in China.
Look at an official image and choose a visible cliff, valley or waterfall. Write what you can see, then add the geological explanation with its source. Keep Chishui's location distinct from central Zunyi when planning a visit.
Forest and water sharpen your observation
The official Chishui Danxia scenic-area website provides a starting point for identifying the local visitor destinations. Use a named place to anchor your forest and waterfall vocabulary, then consult current notices for the route you want to use.
An imagined sentence might read: 'Mist drifted beside the waterfall, and wet leaves caught the light.' It becomes your travel observation only if you actually saw that moment. From home, write 'In the photograph…' and identify the image. Both routes make a lovely, honest learning task.

A noodle bowl invites a precise question
Guizhou's English portal distinguishes regional mutton rice-noodle styles and identifies Zunyi's version with roasted chilli powder. A local food name gives you a helpful conversation starter; the restaurant can explain the particular serving.
Ask about the broth and toppings before describing them. Then practise a sentence with one ingredient and one texture. 'The bowl contained mutton slices' reports a visible detail; an explanation of how the broth was prepared should come from the cook or menu.

Read the map before connecting the scenes
Guizhou's account of Long March heritage places the Zunyi Conference within the province's historical learning routes. The historical connection is useful, but it does not turn distant museum and landscape destinations into one stop.
Create two columns: place and question. Put the conference site beside a history question and Chishui beside a landform question. Once each scene has a job, you can select ten words that support it and leave the rest for another day.
Guizhou provincial portal: Long March heritage
Turn one city moment into clearer English
Try this imagined sentence ladder: 'I read a label.' → 'I read a dated label in a conference exhibition.' → 'The label linked a decision to a document.' → 'I used the document reference to ask how the exhibition supported its account of the decision.' Each step adds a useful relationship; retain only the steps supported by your actual reading.
Use eduKate’s Fencing Method to test each addition: what has it clarified, and does the evidence support it?
Compare a museum timeline with a Danxia interpretation panel. Both explain change, but one discusses human events and the other geological processes. Name the scale and the source before drawing a comparison.
A real journal should distinguish what you observed from what a label or source explained. Mark an imagined account as imagined. The Trip to China writing guide helps you connect one incident into an account; the English 200-word bank supplies meanings and original examples for the English writing itself.
Before, during and after: a small learning plan
Before: choose ten conference or landform expressions. During: record one label and one question. After: write four sentences that distinguish your observation, the source's explanation and what you still want to learn.
For parents, ask what the child noticed before supplying a new word. For teachers, ask learners to label an observation, a sourced explanation and an open question. At home, use an adult-selected photograph or official museum page. No purchase or overseas journey is required, and the task is not an exam or fluency guarantee.
Questions travellers often ask
Do I need to learn all 100 entries?
No. Choose ten that fit one scene. Use the shared essentials for basic exchanges and return to this list when your question becomes more specific.
Is this the local dialect?
The Chinese and pinyin use standard Mandarin. Local speech may sound different. Keep the full written place name available and ask a speaker to model a phrase.
Are all the entries single words?
No. The list includes single words, proper names and short contextual expressions. The English column identifies what each means; the Chinese and pinyin help you recognise or say it.
Can I use this guide from home?
Yes. Study a reliable photograph or official collection page, attribute the source and write a short account. Do not invent a personal journey when your evidence comes from a picture.
Is Chishui the same stop as central Zunyi?
No. This guide covers the wider municipality. Locate the exact attraction and check current transport rather than assuming that the shared Zunyi label means a short journey.
