Hello, Hefei! A museum label, a river-town map and a scientific instrument can each start an excellent question. Let us find the words that help us ask it clearly. This guide connects Chinese place names and Mandarin readings with the habit of noticing, checking and explaining, so your next paragraph has something more specific than 'It was interesting'.
The 100 entries focus on museum evidence, writing materials, Bao Zheng's historical and dramatic identities, Sanhe's waterways and Hefei's science setting. There are everyday expressions as well as optional specialist terms. Use what fits your scene; no one needs to master plasma vocabulary to enjoy a museum visit.

Choose your reading route
Jump to 100 city expressions, pronunciation, five practical questions, places and history or English writing practice.
The list uses simplified Chinese and standard Mandarin Hanyu Pinyin. Names and short descriptive phrases sit beside single words because each has a useful travel purpose. These expressions are learning aids, not a promise that every sign uses the same wording. Save the full Chinese destination name and verify its address on a current official map.
1–10: Locate the main learning places
Choose the full Chinese name of the place you intend to visit. Anhui Museum operates more than one branch; confirm which branch has the exhibition you want. A city guide should help you arrive at the correct place, not just recognise a familiar label.

11–20: Place the city and its wider destinations
Put central Hefei, Sanhe and your selected wider destination on a map before combining them. Names belonging to the same city area can still require separate travel time. Pick a manageable scene rather than treating the list as a one-day itinerary.

21–30: Read a museum label carefully
Choose one object and read material, date and excavation information separately. If a label gives a range, keep the range. If a claim is uncertain, do not turn it into a precise fact for the sake of a smooth sentence.

31–40: Recognise writing materials and tools
These entries describe writing materials and museum exhibition themes. Anhui's provincial displays may cover places beyond Hefei itself. A Huizhou architecture exhibit in Hefei does not make Hefei and Huizhou the same place.

41–50: Describe how a tool leaves a mark
Compare a tool, a mark and an explanation. You may observe an ink spread in an approved demonstration, but a display object is not there for handling. Use a permitted sample or a reliable source to investigate how the material works.

51–60: Separate Bao Zheng from stage stories
Bao Zheng was a historical official; Bao Gong also appears in drama. Ask which kind of evidence a display is presenting. Stage imagery can be culturally important without being a literal portrait of the historical person.

61–70: Explore Sanhe with a return plan
Sanhe's river setting gives you a different scene from the central museum. Read the orientation map, watch thresholds and water edges, and check the way back. Do not follow an attractive lane without keeping track of where it leads.

81–90: Recognise local food and pastry names
Local pastry names are names, not complete recipes. Check labels or ask the seller about ingredients and preparation. A precise description can distinguish a crisp slice from a sweet stick without pretending that all shops make identical versions.

91–100: Turn evidence into a clearer account

Pronunciation: listen to the whole expression
合肥 is Héféi, with two rising tones. 巢湖 is Cháohú, also rising–rising. 包拯 is Bāo Zhěng: level then a low third tone. In 歙砚, the inkstone name uses shè, not xī. 碑刻拓片 is bēikè tàpiàn: 拓 is tà for a rubbing. 重复测量 begins chóngfù; 重 means 'repeat' here, not 'heavy'. These standard Mandarin readings help you identify the written terms; they are not a guide to every local speech variety.
Tone marks show pitch: mā is high and level, má rises, mǎ is low and may dip then rise in isolation, and mà falls. An unmarked neutral syllable is lighter. Names generally retain dictionary tones; short ready-to-say phrases may mark common connected-speech changes, including 不 → bú before a fourth tone and changes to 一. The first of two third tones usually rises in speech. Practise a whole short expression, not just isolated sounds.
Five friendly questions to practise
| English question | Chinese writing | Hanyu Pinyin |
|---|---|---|
| Is this exhibition at the Shushan branch or the Luyang branch? | 这个展览在蜀山馆还是庐阳馆? | Zhège zhǎnlǎn zài Shǔshān Guǎn háishi Lúyáng Guǎn? |
| What material is this inkstone made from? | 这方砚台是什么材料做的? | Zhè fāng yàntai shì shénme cáiliào zuò de? |
| Does this display explain the historical Bao Zheng or a dramatic story? | 这块展板介绍的是历史上的包拯,还是戏剧故事? | Zhè kuài zhǎnbǎn jièshào de shì lìshǐ shàng de Bāo Zhěng, háishi xìjù gùshi? |
| Where can I check transport back from Sanhe? | 在哪里能查询从三河返程的交通? | Zài nǎlǐ néng cháxún cóng Sānhé fǎnchéng de jiāotōng? |
| Does a visit to this research facility require approval? | 参观这个科研设施需要审批吗? | Cānguān zhège kēyán shèshī xūyào shěnpī ma? |
Choose the question that fits your situation, listen to the answer and ask for clarification when needed. A vocabulary list supports communication; it cannot confirm an ingredient, opening arrangement, transport route or permission on somebody else’s behalf.
Anhui Museum: choose the correct branch
Anhui Museum's own website identifies Shushan and Luyang branches and publishes exhibition information. The China National Tourist Office in Singapore also explains the museum's two-branch arrangement and its provincial collection themes, including ancient civilisation, Huizhou architecture and writing materials.
Use the official museum site to check which branch holds your intended display and whether its dates fit your visit. Do not carry a temporary exhibition forward indefinitely because it appears in an old guide. For a family task, let each person choose one object label and bring back a question about its material or purpose.

Provincial collections are not a map of one neighbourhood
The Singapore tourist office's museum account describes collections that span Anhui's history and craft traditions. That breadth is valuable: it allows a Hefei visit to introduce the wider province. It also asks us to be precise. A place represented in an exhibit is not necessarily the city where the museum stands.
For writing practice, keep three labels apart: where the object was made or found, where it is displayed and what cultural tradition it represents. The writing-material entries can lead to a useful comparison of brush, paper, ink and inkstone. Confirm the display's actual explanation rather than guessing from the object's appearance.

Lord Bao Park: history and drama need different labels
Anhui's official account places Bao Zheng-related memorial buildings, including Bao Gong Temple and Qingfeng Pavilion, in Hefei's Lord Bao Park. Bao Zheng's historical identity as a Song official and his later dramatic portrayals are related, but they are not the same kind of evidence.
A good question is: 'Is this display explaining a recorded event, a memorial tradition or a stage story?' Keep the answer attached to the source. You can enjoy a dramatic image while still recognising that it is a portrayal. On a visit, check the current access arrangements for the specific memorial or hall you want to see.
Anhui official account: Bao Zheng memorials in Hefei
Sanhe Ancient Town: understand the three-river name
China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism places Sanhe Ancient Town in Feixi County and connects its name with the Fengle, Hangbu and Xiaonan rivers. That gives your wider Hefei visit a very different learning scene: trace a waterway, read a street map and observe how a river edge meets the town.
Do not confuse a pleasant water-town image with an easy transfer from every city location. Check current transport and the return journey before leaving. At the town, watch raised thresholds, narrow passages and water-edge barriers. One carefully studied street bend is enough material for a strong short account.
China Ministry of Culture and Tourism: Sanhe Ancient Town
Science Island and EAST: access must be checked
The Chinese Academy of Sciences' Hefei institutes reported public science activities on Science Island in May 2026, including introductions to major research facilities. That is evidence of an event that happened, not a standing promise that all facilities accept walk-in visitors. EAST is a tokamak research facility, not an ordinary sightseeing display.
The Institute of Plasma Physics publishes a visit-booking route that requires approval before visitor registration. Check the current official instructions and eligibility rather than assuming that a booking request is an accepted visit. At home, the official research pages still offer a useful task: name one instrument, one research question and one thing you do not yet understand.

Turn one city moment into clearer English
Use an imagined museum scene. Begin: 'I saw an old object.' Add the object: 'I saw an inkstone.' Add evidence: 'The label identified the inkstone's material.' If the material is actually stated, include it accurately. Do not invent a date or origin simply because a more detailed sentence sounds impressive.
Use eduKate’s Fencing Method to test each addition: what has it clarified, and does the evidence support it?
Instead of 'The science was advanced', try a sourced question: 'The official page described a tokamak; I wanted to know how it confines plasma.' The sentence identifies both the source and the learner's next question. It does not pretend that reading one page makes the writer an expert.
A real journal should distinguish what you observed from what a label or source explained. Mark an imagined account as imagined. The Trip to China writing guide helps you connect one incident into an account; the English 200-word bank supplies meanings and original examples for the English writing itself.
Before, during and after: a small learning plan
Before: choose a museum branch and three label words. During, or using official collection pages at home: record an object, its stated material and one uncertainty. After: write a short account that separates your observation from the label's information. Add a question you would ask a guide, then check whether your Chinese phrasing matches the English meaning.
For parents, ask what the child noticed before supplying a new word. For teachers, ask learners to label an observation, a sourced explanation and an open question. At home, use an adult-selected photograph or official museum page. No purchase or overseas journey is required, and the task is not an exam or fluency guarantee.
Questions travellers often ask
Do I need to learn all 100 entries?
No. Choose ten that fit one scene. Use the shared essentials for basic exchanges and return to this list when your question becomes more specific.
Is this the local dialect?
The table uses standard Mandarin. Special readings such as shè in 歙砚 and tà in 拓片 are identified above; do not infer a local dialect reading from them.
Are all the entries single words?
No. The list includes single words, proper names and short contextual expressions. The English column identifies what each means; the Chinese and pinyin help you recognise or say it.
Can I use this guide from home?
Yes. Study a reliable photograph or official collection page, attribute the source and write a short account. Do not invent a personal journey when your evidence comes from a picture.
Can I walk into a research facility because an open day was reported?
No. A past event does not establish present-day public access. Use the facility's current official visit instructions and obtain any required approval before planning a visit.
