A city becomes easier to understand when you have words for what you are noticing. This Siena vocabulary guide is for students, families and curious travellers who want to turn a visit, a map or a museum reading into clearer English. You do not need to learn all one hundred entries before you begin. Choose a route, collect a few useful distinctions and use them in sentences that say something you genuinely mean.
The first forty entries establish places, local traditions, food and cultural connections. The remaining sixty develop related learning strands: painting materials, horse anatomy, water, plant structure and music. Those extensions are explicitly educational. They do not claim that every material occurs in a Siena artwork, every plant grows in the local garden or every technique appears in a particular concert.
Each entry includes an accessible pronunciation guide, a Chinese gloss with pinyin, a definition, an original English example and its Chinese translation. Usage notes explain a common trap or a useful distinction. The pronunciation guides are practical approximations rather than a promise to reproduce every regional accent; capital letters mark the stressed part. Chinese names sometimes have more than one accepted rendering, so retain the original name when searching a map or official catalogue.
Continue through the Vocabulary Lists Control Tower to compare another learning route.

Before the words: Siena connections
Start with the city, then choose a question
Siena is in Tuscany, and its historic centre is recognised by UNESCO for its medieval urban character. The relationship between buildings, streets and the Piazza del Campo makes it a useful setting for studying how individual details belong to a larger whole. The guide uses that connection as a starting point for observation, not as a claim that the city has remained unchanged.

Three genuine routes beyond sightseeing
The University of Siena’s Botanical Museum brings together its botanical garden and herbarium. The Chigiana is an established institution for advanced music study. Those are real local connections; the plant diagrams, listening tasks and imagined classroom scenes below are independent teaching extensions, rather than official programmes from either institution.
Reference: University of Siena, Department of Life Sciences · Accademia Musicale Chigiana
The Bottini are Siena’s historic underground water-supply system. Their fountains invite questions about water supply. The scientific examples later in this guide are simplified learning models; they are not measurements, geological surveys or water-quality assessments from Siena.

Visitor checks, dated 4 October 2026
As checked on 4 October 2026, the cathedral operator’s published 2026 notice lists the extraordinary floor-uncovering period as 18 August to 15 November 2026. Recheck the current notice and your actual ticket conditions before relying on a date; this vocabulary guide does not confirm an individual booking or admission route.
Reference: Opera della Metropolitana di Siena
The official city information says Bottini visits operate on limited dates, with restricted access, rather than throughout the year. Confirm an available visit before planning around an underground route. For other museums, churches, towers and concerts, use the current official visitor page for the specific place and date.
Reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
Read private, devotional and working spaces with particular care. The city’s account of contrada horse blessings says admission may be refused and calls for strict quiet, without applause or flash. Learn from an official account or an authorised viewing opportunity rather than assuming that every ceremony or stable is open to visitors.

1. Read the city through its places
Entries 1–10. Back to contents
Begin with a map and one question. For each place, decide whether your sentence concerns its location, its earlier role, the institution inside it or a visit you hope to make. Keep those categories separate. You can use the chapter productively with official photographs and written sources if you are not travelling.
1. Siena
Say it: see-EN-uh; Italian: SYEH-nah
中文: 锡耶纳 · xī yé nà
Meaning: A city in Tuscany, Italy, whose historic centre preserves a strongly medieval urban character.
Example: Our Siena notebook began with three questions about the city rather than a list of places to photograph.
中文例句: 我们的锡耶纳笔记本以三个关于这座城市的问题开篇,而不是一份拍照地点清单。
Use it well: Use Siena for the city and sienna for the colour or pigment. A destination name tells the reader where the study is set; it does not prove that every object, ingredient or technique mentioned originated there.
Siena learning connection: This city supplies the starting point for all ten learning chapters.
Try it elsewhere: Write a question that could guide a whole afternoon of observation.
Word reference: UNESCO World Heritage Centre
2. Piazza del Campo
Say it: pee-AT-sah del KAM-poh
中文: 坎波广场 · kǎn bō guǎng chǎng
Meaning: Siena’s principal civic square, recognisable by its shell-like shape and its relationship to the Palazzo Pubblico.
Example: At Piazza del Campo, our imaginary guide asked everyone to describe the shape before reaching for a camera.
中文例句: 在坎波广场,我们想象中的导游请大家先描述广场的形状,再拿相机。
Use it well: Keep the full place name when giving directions. In descriptive writing, begin with a visible relationship, such as where a building stands relative to the square, before adding an interpretation of what that relationship might mean.
Siena learning connection: The square offers a shared setting for spatial and civic vocabulary.
Try it elsewhere: Describe a familiar school courtyard using two precise location phrases.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
3. Torre del Mangia
Say it: TOR-reh del MAN-jah
中文: 曼贾塔 · màn jiǎ tǎ
Meaning: The tall civic bell tower beside Siena’s Palazzo Pubblico, built principally of brick with a stone upper section.
Example: We marked Torre del Mangia on the map but left our climbing plans open until we had checked access.
中文例句: 我们在地图上标出曼贾塔,但在确认能否进入之前,没有确定登塔计划。
Use it well: An exterior observation and a promise to climb are different claims. Write could or hope to when describing an unconfirmed plan. Do not turn a tower’s appearance in a photograph into a statement about present admission arrangements.
Siena learning connection: This landmark helps practise the difference between orientation and booking.
Try it elsewhere: Rewrite an overconfident itinerary sentence as a clear, conditional plan.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
4. Fonte Gaia
Say it: FON-teh GAH-yah
中文: 欢乐喷泉 · huān lè pēn quán
Meaning: The fountain in Piazza del Campo whose nineteenth-century replacement reproduces Jacopo della Quercia’s earlier sculptural work.
Example: Before sketching Fonte Gaia, Jia checked whether her reference photograph showed the square’s replacement or the original sculptures.
中文例句: 画欢乐喷泉之前,佳先确认参考照片拍的是广场上的替代品还是原作雕塑。
Use it well: Name the version when discussing an artwork. Original, replacement and reproduction answer different questions about an object’s history. A careful caption can remain short while explaining which physical object the writer has actually examined.
Siena learning connection: The fountain makes version-aware art description particularly useful.
Try it elsewhere: Write a caption that identifies the object and the evidence you used.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
5. Santa Maria della Scala
Say it: SAN-tah mah-REE-ah DEL-lah SKAH-lah
中文: 圣玛利亚德拉斯卡拉 · shèng mǎ lì yà dé lā sī kǎ lā
Meaning: A former hospital complex opposite Siena Cathedral that now serves as a museum and cultural institution.
Example: Our proposed visit to Santa Maria della Scala focused on how a building can preserve several kinds of memory.
中文例句: 我们计划参观圣玛利亚德拉斯卡拉,重点了解一座建筑如何保存多种记忆。
Use it well: Do not translate hospital into a claim that this is a present-day treatment destination. State the historical function and current cultural role separately. When writing about change, a sentence with formerly and now can prevent a serious misunderstanding.
Siena learning connection: This institution connects the study of care, art and changing building use.
Try it elsewhere: Describe a reused building without erasing its earlier purpose.
Word reference: Santa Maria della Scala
6. Piccolomini Library
Say it: pik-uh-LOH-mee-nee LYE-bruh-ree
中文: 皮科洛米尼图书馆 · pí kē luò mǐ ní tú shū guǎn
Meaning: The decorated library space in Siena Cathedral, commissioned to honour Pope Pius II and associated with Pinturicchio’s fresco cycle.
Example: The Piccolomini Library gave our study group a reason to ask how painted stories and books can share one room.
中文例句: 皮科洛米尼图书馆让我们的学习小组思考,彩绘故事和书籍如何共处一室。
Use it well: A historic library is not automatically a lending library. Before describing a collection, distinguish the room, its decoration and the objects currently presented there. These three layers may require different captions and different kinds of evidence.
Siena learning connection: Use the name as a bridge between reading images and reading texts.
Try it elsewhere: List three questions you would ask about an unfamiliar historic library.
Word reference: Opera della Metropolitana di Siena
7. Facciatone
Say it: fat-chah-TOH-neh
中文: 大立面 · dà lì miàn
Meaning: The monumental unfinished façade of the planned New Cathedral in Siena, retained as part of the cathedral complex.
Example: In her drawing of the Facciatone, Mei left space beside the outline for a question about the unfinished project.
中文例句: 在大立面的画旁,梅留出空间,写下一个关于未完成工程的问题。
Use it well: Unfinished describes a historical condition; it does not mean worthless or badly made. Separate the surviving structure from your imagined completed building. If you discuss a panorama visit, confirm the actual route rather than assuming every staircase is open.
Siena learning connection: The structure encourages careful language about intention and survival.
Try it elsewhere: Compare what exists with what was planned, clearly marking the difference.
Word reference: Opera della Metropolitana di Siena
8. Basilica of San Domenico
Say it: buh-SIL-ih-kuh ov san doh-MEH-nee-koh
中文: 圣多明我大殿 · shèng duō míng wǒ dà diàn
Meaning: A Dominican church in Siena closely associated with the life and veneration of Saint Catherine.
Example: The Basilica of San Domenico appeared in our route as a place to read quietly and observe respectfully.
中文例句: 圣多明我大殿被列入我们的路线,作为安静阅读和恭敬观察的地方。
Use it well: A church can be both a heritage destination and a place of worship. Describe religious traditions as traditions or beliefs when appropriate. Avoid treating another person’s devotional practice as a performance arranged for your visit.
Siena learning connection: This stop develops considerate language around religious heritage.
Try it elsewhere: Write a polite question about visitor conduct in a place of worship.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
9. Palazzo Chigi Saracini
Say it: pah-LAT-tsoh KEE-jee sah-rah-CHEE-nee
中文: 基吉萨拉奇尼宫 · jī jí sà lā qí ní gōng
Meaning: The historic Siena palace that houses the Accademia Musicale Chigiana and an important art collection.
Example: I placed Palazzo Chigi Saracini in both the art and music sections of my proposed learning route.
中文例句: 我把基吉萨拉奇尼宫同时列入计划学习路线中的艺术和音乐部分。
Use it well: A building name and an institution’s name are not interchangeable in every sentence. Use the palace name for the physical setting and the academy’s name when discussing its teaching or artistic activity. This small choice clarifies who does what.
Siena learning connection: The palace provides a genuine meeting point for visual art and music.
Try it elsewhere: Describe one building and one organisation within it in separate sentences.
Word reference: Accademia Musicale Chigiana
10. Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena
Say it: pee-nah-koh-TEH-kah nat-see-oh-NAH-leh dee SYEH-nah
中文: 锡耶纳国立绘画馆 · xī yé nà guó lì huì huà guǎn
Meaning: Siena’s national picture gallery, particularly associated with paintings of the Sienese tradition.
Example: Before our imagined visit to the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena, we chose one question about how to read a painting label.
中文例句: 在想象中的锡耶纳国立绘画馆参观前,我们选定了一个关于如何读作品标签的问题。
Use it well: The Italian word pinacoteca names a picture gallery. Keep the institution’s full name in a reference or itinerary, then use the gallery in later sentences once the reader knows which institution you mean. Avoid promising the display of a particular work without checking.
Siena learning connection: This collection anchors the guide’s extended art-learning strand.
Try it elsewhere: Turn a broad instruction to look at art into one manageable question.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
Put the distinction to work
Choose three entries and create a short route for an imaginary visitor. Give one reason for each choice and write one question that remains unanswered. Then underline every promise about entry, opening or access. Replace any promise you have not verified with a conditional plan. Finally, check that another reader could distinguish the place itself from the activity you hope to do there.

2. Understand the Palio vocabulary respectfully
Entries 11–20. Back to contents
Read these local words as a small system of people, objects and actions. Keep a separate column for who, what and when. When a term is unfamiliar, resist the urge to force it into a familiar English category before reading its explanation. A good visitor question leaves space for the person answering to correct your assumptions.
11. Palio
Say it: PAH-lee-oh
中文: 赛马节 · sài mǎ jié
Meaning: In this guide, Siena’s traditional horse-racing festival and contest between the city’s contrade.
Example: Reading about the Palio, we asked how a visitor could learn about the event without assuming membership in its communities.
中文例句: 阅读赛马节资料时,我们思考游客如何了解活动,同时不自以为属于当地社群。
Use it well: Specify Siena when the location is not already clear. Treat the word as the name of a culturally embedded event, then identify the particular ceremony, race or community activity you mean rather than compressing everything into one spectacle.
Siena learning connection: This is the starting point for the next nine local terms.
Try it elsewhere: Write two respectful questions that go beyond asking who won.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
12. contrada
Say it: kon-TRAH-dah
中文: 街区社群 · jiē qū shè qún
Meaning: One of Siena’s historic territorial communities, with its own identity and collective life.
Example: A contrada is easier to understand when we ask about its people as well as the area on a map.
中文例句: 如果既了解居民,也了解地图上的范围,就更容易理解街区社群。
Use it well: The Italian plural is contrade. District is a useful first gloss, but it can miss the social meaning. In an English account, explain the community sense once and then retain contrada when that local meaning matters.
Siena learning connection: The term helps avoid reducing neighbourhood belonging to a boundary line.
Try it elsewhere: Describe a community you know using people, place and shared activity.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
13. drappellone
Say it: drap-pel-LOH-neh
中文: 赛马节彩绘奖旗 · sài mǎ jié cǎi huì jiǎng qí
Meaning: The painted silk banner awarded to the victorious contrada in Siena’s Palio.
Example: On a museum worksheet, Lina wrote a question about the drappellone instead of guessing what every symbol meant.
中文例句: 在博物馆学习单上,莉娜写下一个关于赛马节彩绘奖旗的问题,而没有猜测每个符号的含义。
Use it well: Name an image as an observation before interpreting it. A colour, figure or inscription may need historical explanation, and a confident-sounding guess is still a guess. Use the label or an identified guide to support the interpretation.
Siena learning connection: This prize connects community memory with the reading of images.
Try it elsewhere: Separate one visual observation from one question about meaning.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
14. barbaresco
Say it: bar-bah-RES-koh
中文: 赛马照料员 · sài mǎ zhào liào yuán
Meaning: The contrada’s horse attendant responsible for caring for its horse during the Palio period.
Example: Our interview plan asked a barbaresco about the responsibilities of the role rather than requesting access to a stable.
中文例句: 我们的访谈计划是向赛马照料员询问职责,而不是要求进入马厩。
Use it well: Explain the role in lower case when using this local word in English. A role description does not grant permission to approach the person, horse or workplace. Ask appropriately and accept that an activity may be private.
Siena learning connection: The word puts responsibility and animal care ahead of spectacle.
Try it elsewhere: Compose a courteous question that respects someone’s working space.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena · Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
15. mossiere
Say it: mos-see-EH-reh
中文: 赛马发令员 · sài mǎ fā lìng yuán
Meaning: The official responsible for organising and directing the start of the Palio race.
Example: When the commentary mentioned the mossiere, we added the official’s role to our diagram of the start.
中文例句: 解说提到赛马发令员时,我们把这位官员的职责补充到起跑示意图上。
Use it well: A job title identifies a responsibility, not a personality. In a report, describe what the official did before evaluating the decision. Avoid confusing an explanation of procedure with an allegation about the motives of an individual.
Siena learning connection: This term supports neutral reporting of a highly charged event.
Try it elsewhere: Replace an emotional judgement with a verifiable description of an action.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
16. tratta
Say it: TRAT-tah
中文: 赛马抽签分配仪式 · sài mǎ chōu qiān fēn pèi yí shì
Meaning: The Palio process in which selected horses are assigned to the participating contrade by a draw.
Example: Our timeline placed the tratta before the imagined discussion of which horse a contrada would receive.
中文例句: 我们的时间线把赛马抽签分配仪式放在想象中讨论街区将获哪匹马之前。
Use it well: Keep selection and allocation separate when explaining a process. First establish what is being chosen; then explain who receives it. A numbered sequence can prevent a reader from thinking that choosing the participating horses and assigning them are the same action.
Siena learning connection: The event provides a clear example of sequence and allocation.
Try it elsewhere: Write a three-step account of a draw without inventing an outcome.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
17. canape
Say it: KAH-nah-peh
中文: 赛马起跑绳 · sài mǎ qǐ pǎo shéng
Meaning: In Palio terminology, a heavy rope used to mark and control the horses’ starting area.
Example: I underlined canape in the glossary because the word referred to race equipment rather than food.
中文例句: 我在词汇表里画出赛马起跑绳一词,因为它指比赛设备,而不是食物。
Use it well: This local Italian form is not the English canapé, a small item of food. Say the final Italian vowel clearly. When a familiar-looking word appears in a new setting, check the sense rather than transferring the first meaning you know.
Siena learning connection: Use this as a memorable exercise in avoiding false friends.
Try it elsewhere: Find another familiar-looking foreign word and verify its actual meaning.
Word reference: Treccani · Comune di Siena, Palio office
18. mossa
Say it: MOS-sah
中文: 赛马起跑 · sài mǎ qǐ pǎo
Meaning: The start of a horse race; in Siena’s Palio context, also the starting situation or place.
Example: The class paused the recording at the mossa to check whether our written sequence was clear.
中文例句: 全班在赛马起跑时暂停录像,检查我们写的事件顺序是否清楚。
Use it well: The term has broader meanings in Italian, so translate the particular context rather than giving it one permanent English equivalent. In this chapter it concerns the start. Explain that sense explicitly before using it in a longer description.
Siena learning connection: This word adds precision to a report of the race’s opening.
Try it elsewhere: Write a sentence that makes the intended sense unmistakable.
Word reference: Treccani
19. nerbo
Say it: NER-boh
中文: 赛马鞭 · sài mǎ biān
Meaning: The traditional whip carried by a jockey in the Palio.
Example: In the historical description, the word nerbo prompted us to ask about equipment rather than to copy the action.
中文例句: 在历史描述中,赛马鞭一词让我们询问装备,而不是模仿动作。
Use it well: Knowing the name of an object does not require celebrating or reproducing its use. Keep description separate from judgement, and support either one with clear evidence. For a general reader, provide the English gloss immediately after the local term.
Siena learning connection: This entry supports accurate discussion of historical racing equipment.
Try it elsewhere: Describe an unfamiliar object without giving instructions for using it.
Word reference: Treccani
20. Corteo Storico
Say it: kor-TEH-oh STOR-ee-koh
中文: 历史仪仗游行 · lì shǐ yí zhàng yóu xíng
Meaning: The ceremonial historical procession that precedes Siena’s Palio and represents civic and contrada traditions.
Example: Our notes on the Corteo Storico separated the procession’s order from our personal response to the colours.
中文例句: 我们关于历史仪仗游行的笔记,把队伍的顺序和自己对色彩的感受分开记录。
Use it well: A commemorative presentation of the past is not direct footage of that past. Ask what is being represented and who organises the representation. That question helps a student discuss historical costume with curiosity instead of treating every detail as timeless.
Siena learning connection: The procession connects public ceremony with the interpretation of history.
Try it elsewhere: Explain the difference between a historical event and its later commemoration.
Word reference: Comune di Siena, Palio office
Put the distinction to work
Make a timeline using five terms from the chapter. The exercise should explain a sequence, not invent a race result. Ask a partner to circle any point where a person, object or stage has been confused with another. Rewrite the unclear sentence using a precise noun and a straightforward verb. Finish with a question about community meaning that could be asked respectfully, without presuming access to private activity.
Back to all 100 words · Continue reading · Vocabulary references
3. Read food, records and symbols
Entries 21–30. Back to contents
These entries move between things that can be named, labelled, served, recorded or represented. The learning skill is the same: identify exactly what the noun refers to before making a larger claim. Treat a recipe description, a product label, an institutional name and an artwork title as different kinds of evidence.
21. ricciarelli
Say it: rit-chah-REL-lee
中文: 里恰雷利杏仁饼 · lǐ qià léi lì xìng rén bǐng
Meaning: Soft almond-based biscuits associated with Siena, commonly presented with a coating of icing sugar.
Example: Before buying ricciarelli, our fictional traveller asked the baker to explain the ingredient label.
中文例句: 购买里恰雷利杏仁饼之前,我们虚构的游客请面包师解释配料标签。
Use it well: The plural form names the biscuits as a group; a package of ricciarelli is natural English. A traditional name cannot confirm one seller’s precise ingredients. Ask about the actual product when dietary requirements matter rather than relying on a general description.
Siena learning connection: This food word opens a practical conversation about labels and questions.
Try it elsewhere: Write a polite question about a packaged food’s ingredients.
Word reference: Fondazione Qualivita / Qualigeo
22. panforte
Say it: pan-FOR-teh
中文: 潘福尔特果仁糕 · pān fú ěr tè guǒ rén gāo
Meaning: A dense Sienese sweet made with nuts, candied fruit, honey or sugar, and spices.
Example: We cut the imaginary panforte into small portions and compared the words dense, chewy and crisp.
中文例句: 我们把想象中的潘福尔特果仁糕切成小份,并比较密实、有嚼劲和松脆三个词。
Use it well: Describe the texture you have evidence for rather than using delicious as your only adjective. Recipes and commercial varieties differ. A useful food paragraph combines a specific sensory observation with a clearly labelled personal response.
Siena learning connection: Use this sweet to practise texture vocabulary with a concrete subject.
Try it elsewhere: Replace three vague food adjectives with more informative descriptions.
Word reference: Fondazione Qualivita / Qualigeo
23. cavallucci
Say it: kah-val-LOOT-chee
中文: 卡瓦卢奇香料饼 · kǎ wǎ lú qí xiāng liào bǐng
Meaning: Traditional Sienese biscuits whose familiar modern ingredients include aniseed and candied fruit.
Example: Jia wrote cavallucci beside a question about flavour, then left the answer blank until she could check it.
中文例句: 佳在关于味道的问题旁写下卡瓦卢奇香料饼,并在核实之前把答案空着。
Use it well: A food name can begin an enquiry without pretending you have tasted it. Use I expect, I read that or I would ask accurately. Reserve I noticed for an observation you actually made, and avoid presenting a name-origin story as established history.
Siena learning connection: This entry develops honest language about food expectations.
Try it elsewhere: Write one researched statement and one unanswered tasting question.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
24. pan co' santi
Say it: pan koh SAN-tee
中文: 诸圣果仁面包 · zhū shèng guǒ rén miàn bāo
Meaning: A Sienese autumn bread associated with All Saints’ Day, containing walnuts and raisins and flavoured with pepper.
Example: In our autumn menu exercise, pan co’ santi needed a description that mentioned both sweetness and spice.
中文例句: 在我们的秋季菜单练习中,诸圣果仁面包需要一段同时提到甜味和香料味的描述。
Use it well: Keep the apostrophe when reproducing this common spelling. Translate the food rather than each word in isolation if your reader needs to recognise what is served. The seasonal association does not guarantee that a particular shop stocks it on your date.
Siena learning connection: This bread links seasonal language with a specific local food tradition.
Try it elsewhere: Write a menu description that is informative without making an availability promise.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
25. pici
Say it: PEE-chee
中文: 皮奇粗面 · pí qí cū miàn
Meaning: Thick handmade pasta associated with Siena.
Example: Our restaurant dialogue used pici in a question about the sauce rather than assuming one standard recipe.
中文例句: 我们的餐馆对话用皮奇粗面一词询问酱汁,而不是假定只有一种标准做法。
Use it well: Name the pasta and sauce separately. A dish’s main noun may tell you its form while leaving the accompaniment unspecified. In an order or translation, preserve details that matter to the eater instead of replacing the whole dish with a vague word such as noodles.
Siena learning connection: This term helps make a food enquiry more exact.
Try it elsewhere: Write two questions that distinguish a main ingredient from its accompaniment.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena · Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
26. Cinta Senese
Say it: CHIN-tah seh-NEH-zeh
中文: 锡耶纳带纹猪 · xī yé nà dài wén zhū
Meaning: A Tuscan pig breed recognised by a pale band across its dark body; the name also appears in protected pork-product labelling.
Example: When Cinta Senese appeared on the menu, our group asked whether the description referred to the breed or a certified product.
中文例句: 菜单上出现锡耶纳带纹猪时,我们小组询问,说明指的是品种还是经过认证的产品。
Use it well: A breed name and a protected food designation make different claims. Read the complete label and any certification mark before repeating a production claim. The English phrase pork from the breed can be clearer than assuming the reader knows the Italian name.
Siena learning connection: The term connects animal identity with careful reading of food labels.
Try it elsewhere: Explain why a product name alone may not establish its certification.
Word reference: Fondazione Qualivita / Qualigeo · Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
27. Biccherna
Say it: bik-KER-nah
中文: 比凯尔纳财政署 · bǐ kǎi ěr nà cái zhèng shǔ
Meaning: The historical financial office of Siena, whose accounting records became associated with decorated wooden covers known as biccherne.
Example: Our Biccherna reading task asked why an administrative record might also interest an art historian.
中文例句: 我们的比凯尔纳财政署阅读任务询问,行政记录为什么也可能引起艺术史学者的兴趣。
Use it well: Distinguish the office from the surviving covers when you explain the term. A document may carry several kinds of evidence at once. Identify whether your sentence concerns administration, the painted surface or the record that the cover originally protected.
Siena learning connection: This is a city-specific bridge between public accounts and visual culture.
Try it elsewhere: Choose an everyday document and list two different questions it could answer.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
28. Balzana
Say it: bahl-TSAH-nah
中文: 黑白市徽 · hēi bái shì huī
Meaning: Siena’s shield divided horizontally into a white upper half and a black lower half.
Example: We drew the Balzana in our notebook and added a label so that the colour arrangement would not be reversed.
中文例句: 我们在笔记本上画出黑白市徽,并加上标签,以免把颜色的位置颠倒。
Use it well: A symbolic description should identify arrangement as well as colour. White and black by itself is incomplete here. When sketching an emblem, distinguish what you observed from the broader historical associations that would require further explanation.
Siena learning connection: This emblem offers a concise exercise in accurate visual description.
Try it elsewhere: Describe a two-part design so another person could reconstruct its arrangement.
Word reference: Comune di Siena
29. Maestà
Say it: mah-es-TAH
中文: 圣母威仪图 · shèng mǔ wēi yí tú
Meaning: An image of the enthroned Virgin and Child in majesty; Siena’s cathedral museum houses Duccio’s celebrated example.
Example: Our caption named Duccio’s Maestà so that the reader would know which work we were discussing.
中文例句: 我们的说明写明杜乔的《圣母威仪图》,让读者知道我们讨论的是哪件作品。
Use it well: The term identifies a subject type as well as appearing in artwork titles. Add the artist and location when necessary. Two works sharing a subject are not the same object, and recognising the subject does not establish who painted either work.
Siena learning connection: This word supports careful identification before interpretation.
Try it elsewhere: Write a caption that distinguishes subject, artist and individual artwork.
Word reference: Opera della Metropolitana di Siena
30. Pellegrinaio
Say it: pel-leh-gree-NAH-yoh
中文: 朝圣者大厅 · cháo shèng zhě dà tīng
Meaning: The historic pilgrims’ hall at Santa Maria della Scala, decorated with a cycle of scenes connected with the hospital’s life.
Example: In the Pellegrinaio exercise, the class chose one painted action and asked what evidence would explain it.
中文例句: 在朝圣者大厅练习中,全班选出一个画中的动作,并询问什么证据能够解释它。
Use it well: Begin with the represented action, not a sweeping claim about every person of the period. A painting can communicate ideals and institutional identity as well as depict activity. Make clear when you are describing the image and when you are interpreting its purpose.
Siena learning connection: The hall connects visual storytelling with the history of assistance.
Try it elsewhere: Describe one action in an image before offering a supported interpretation.
Word reference: Santa Maria della Scala
Put the distinction to work
Select a food word and an art or civic word. For each, write a practical question and a descriptive sentence. Then check whether you have silently turned a general name into a guarantee about ingredients, authenticity, certification or meaning. Remove that guarantee unless you can support it. An informative sentence does not have to sound absolute; it has to make clear what is known and what is still being checked.

4. Follow people and institutions into learning
Entries 31–40. Back to contents
A proper name can organise a useful enquiry, but memorising the name is only a beginning. Ask what that person, place or institution helps you investigate. Then choose a question small enough to answer with a specific source. Avoid turning a historical association into an endorsement of your own exercise or a promise about a future visit.
31. Duccio
Say it: DOOT-choh
中文: 杜乔 · dù qiáo
Meaning: Duccio di Buoninsegna, a major Sienese painter active around the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries.
Example: A label naming Duccio led us to ask which parts of the attribution were secure and which needed explanation.
中文例句: 一个写着杜乔名字的标签,让我们询问归属判断中哪些部分确定,哪些还需要解释。
Use it well: An artist’s name is not a technique. Use by only when the attribution supports it, and preserve qualifiers such as workshop of or attributed to when a catalogue uses them. Dropping a small qualifier can materially change a historical claim.
Siena learning connection: His name anchors questions about making and identifying paintings.
Try it elsewhere: Explain how attributed to differs from an unqualified by in an artwork label.
Word reference: National Gallery, London
32. Simone Martini
Say it: see-MOH-neh mar-TEE-nee
中文: 西蒙内马尔蒂尼 · xī méng nèi mǎ ěr dì ní
Meaning: A fourteenth-century Sienese painter whose career extended beyond his home city.
Example: For our Simone Martini study, we compared two catalogue descriptions before deciding what to write in the introduction.
中文例句: 在西蒙内马尔蒂尼研究中,我们比较了两段目录说明,才决定导言该写什么。
Use it well: Use an artist’s name to organise a question, not to replace close observation. If a description uses elegant, ask what visible feature supports the adjective. A useful paragraph moves from a particular detail toward a broader judgement rather than reversing that order.
Siena learning connection: This artist offers a starting point for evidence-based aesthetic vocabulary.
Try it elsewhere: Support an adjective about an artwork with one visible detail.
Word reference: National Gallery, London
33. Ambrogio Lorenzetti
Say it: am-BROH-joh loh-ren-TSET-tee
中文: 安布罗焦洛伦采蒂 · ān bù luó jiāo luò lún cǎi dì
Meaning: The Sienese painter responsible for the Good and Bad Government fresco cycle in the Palazzo Pubblico.
Example: Our Ambrogio Lorenzetti discussion asked how a painted scene could invite viewers to think about public responsibility.
中文例句: 我们的安布罗焦洛伦采蒂讨论询问,一幅绘画如何引导观众思考公共责任。
Use it well: Separate what a picture shows from the conclusion you draw about political life. Use suggests when offering an interpretation, then identify the detail supporting it. A historical artwork is not a simple measurement of how well a whole society actually functioned.
Siena learning connection: His civic paintings connect art study with reasoned social discussion.
Try it elsewhere: Frame an interpretation as a claim followed by supporting visual evidence.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
34. Sienese School
Say it: see-eh-NEEZ skool
中文: 锡耶纳画派 · xī yé nà huà pài
Meaning: An art-historical grouping for painters and traditions associated with Siena, especially its important medieval painting culture.
Example: The phrase Sienese School helped organise our reading, but we still compared the artists individually.
中文例句: 锡耶纳画派这一说法帮助我们整理阅读内容,但我们仍然逐一比较艺术家。
Use it well: School here means an artistic tradition or grouping, not necessarily one teaching building. A category can help organise information without making every member identical. Name the specific painter, period and work before claiming that a characteristic applies to the whole group.
Siena learning connection: This term turns local art into a lesson about careful classification.
Try it elsewhere: Identify one useful category and one limitation of using it too broadly.
Word reference: The Metropolitan Museum of Art
35. Porta Camollia
Say it: POR-tah kah-MOL-lee-ah
中文: 卡莫利亚城门 · kǎ mò lì yà chéng mén
Meaning: A historic gate on Siena’s northern approach, facing the direction of Florence.
Example: We chose Porta Camollia as a map-reading reference and checked the direction before describing our route.
中文例句: 我们选卡莫利亚城门作读图参照,并在描述路线前核对方向。
Use it well: A directional statement is more useful when its reference point is clear. North of the city centre and on our left are not interchangeable. The first can stay useful when another traveller starts from a different position.
Siena learning connection: This gate provides a concrete anchor for orientation language.
Try it elsewhere: Give directions that do not depend on the listener standing beside you.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
36. Fontebranda
Say it: fon-teh-BRAN-dah
中文: 布兰达泉 · bù lán dá quán
Meaning: A major medieval fountain in Siena, supplied by the underground water system and historically serving several practical uses.
Example: Our Fontebranda notes separated a question about water supply from a question about the structure’s appearance.
中文例句: 我们的布兰达泉笔记把供水问题和建筑外观问题分开记录。
Use it well: A fountain can be described as an object, a water outlet or part of a wider system. Choose the scale your sentence needs. A historical statement about drinking water is not an assurance that water at a site is safe to drink today.
Siena learning connection: This fountain opens the guide’s study of urban water.
Try it elsewhere: Describe the same object once by appearance and once by function.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
37. Bottini
Say it: bot-TEE-nee
中文: 地下引水渠网 · dì xià yǐn shuǐ qú wǎng
Meaning: The network of historic underground water-supply tunnels beneath Siena.
Example: The Bottini made us ask where water travelled before it became visible at a fountain.
中文例句: 地下引水渠网让我们追问,水在喷泉中出现之前经过了哪些地方。
Use it well: The plural name refers to a network. Do not imagine one uninterrupted public walkway merely because a diagram connects several branches. A route shown on a historical plan and a route available to present-day visitors answer different questions.
Siena learning connection: This real water system motivates the scientific extension in Chapter 7.
Try it elsewhere: Draw a simple system boundary and name what enters and leaves it.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena · Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
38. Orto Botanico di Siena
Say it: OR-toh boh-TAH-nee-koh dee SYEH-nah
中文: 锡耶纳植物园 · xī yé nà zhí wù yuán
Meaning: The University of Siena’s botanical garden, part of its Botanical Museum together with the herbarium.
Example: We used Orto Botanico di Siena as a starting point for a notebook about plant structure rather than a promised species checklist.
中文例句: 我们以锡耶纳植物园为起点,编写植物结构笔记,而不是一份保证能见到的物种清单。
Use it well: The Italian name means botanical garden of Siena. A teaching exercise may extend from a real institution without claiming that every example plant grows there. Check a specimen’s actual label before using its name in an observation record.
Siena learning connection: The garden provides the genuine institutional link for Chapter 8.
Try it elsewhere: Prepare a plant-observation page with space for date, label and uncertainty.
Word reference: University of Siena, Department of Life Sciences
39. Accademia Musicale Chigiana
Say it: ah-kah-DEH-myah moo-zee-KAH-leh kee-JAH-nah
中文: 基吉亚纳音乐学院 · jī jí yà nà yīn yuè xué yuàn
Meaning: The Siena institution founded by Guido Chigi Saracini for advanced musical study, with courses beginning in 1932.
Example: The Accademia Musicale Chigiana inspired our listening project, although our sample exercises were written independently.
中文例句: 基吉亚纳音乐学院启发了我们的聆听项目,但示例练习由我们独立编写。
Use it well: Name the institution accurately without implying that an exercise is its official curriculum. An educational connection and an endorsement are different claims. For a real performance or course, consult the institution’s current programme rather than treating a vocabulary guide as a schedule.
Siena learning connection: This academy is the local foundation for the two music chapters.
Try it elsewhere: Write a sentence connecting an interest to an institution without claiming affiliation.
Word reference: Chigiana Global Academy Programs
40. Sanctuary of Saint Catherine
Say it: SANK-choo-air-ee ov saynt KATH-uh-rin
中文: 圣加大利纳圣所 · shèng jiā dà lì nà shèng suǒ
Meaning: The religious complex developed around Catherine of Siena’s family home in the Fontebranda area.
Example: At the Sanctuary of Saint Catherine in our imagined itinerary, we planned time to read before discussing the story.
中文例句: 在想象中的行程里,我们计划到圣加大利纳圣所先阅读资料,再讨论其故事。
Use it well: Use the full saint’s name when readers might otherwise confuse people or places. Explain the historical association and describe devotional accounts with attribution. Respectful writing can acknowledge religious significance without asking every reader to share the same belief.
Siena learning connection: The sanctuary connects a named life with a specific urban setting.
Try it elsewhere: Distinguish a documented location from an account of religious experience.
Word reference: Comune di Siena / Visit Siena
Put the distinction to work
Build a two-column reading plan. In the first column place three names from the chapter; in the second write a question for each. Make one question about an artwork, one about a physical system and one about a learning activity. Identify the sort of evidence needed for each answer. Explain why one attractive photograph would not settle all three questions.

5. Distinguish colour, material and method
Entries 41–50. Back to contents
Use this chapter as a reading companion for art labels and conservation accounts. Its terms are not a checklist of materials in any one Siena painting. Ask whether a word identifies a colour-producing substance, a binding or coating material, a background or an attachment method. The point is to improve your questions rather than to attempt a treatment.
41. raw sienna
Say it: raw see-EN-uh
中文: 生赭石颜料 · shēng zhě shí yán liào
Meaning: A naturally yellow-brown earth pigment containing iron compounds, used without the heating that produces burnt sienna.
Example: For the colour study, Mei placed raw sienna beside a handwritten note about the pigment’s material identity.
中文例句: 在色彩研究中,梅把生赭石颜料放在一条关于其材料特性的手写笔记旁。
Use it well: The colour word has two n’s, unlike the city Siena. Raw identifies an unheated earth pigment in this pair; it does not mean raw food. A colour name on a modern tube should still be checked against its pigment information.
Siena learning connection: This material offers a direct linguistic link with the city name.
Try it elsewhere: Write a sentence that distinguishes a place name from a colour name.
Word reference: Museum of Fine Arts Boston, CAMEO
42. burnt sienna
Say it: bernt see-EN-uh
中文: 熟赭石颜料 · shú zhě shí yán liào
Meaning: The reddish-brown earth pigment traditionally obtained by heating raw sienna.
Example: Our comparison of burnt sienna and its unheated counterpart focused on processing rather than on which colour looked nicer.
中文例句: 我们比较熟赭石颜料与未加热的对应颜料时,关注加工过程,而不是哪种颜色更好看。
Use it well: Burnt records a material treatment here. It is not a judgement that the pigment is damaged. Explain the process distinction in a comparison, and do not substitute burnt umber: that name identifies a different earth pigment.
Siena learning connection: Use this as a materials-learning extension rather than a claim about one local painting.
Try it elsewhere: Compare two processed materials without calling one automatically better.
Word reference: Museum of Fine Arts Boston, CAMEO · Museum of Fine Arts Boston, CAMEO
43. terre verte
Say it: tair VERT
中文: 绿土颜料 · lǜ tǔ yán liào
Meaning: A green earth pigment made from naturally occurring iron-bearing silicate minerals.
Example: The conservation glossary used terre verte, so I recorded the material term separately from the simple colour adjective green.
中文例句: 保护修复词汇表使用绿土颜料一词,因此我把材料名称与简单的颜色形容词“绿色”分开记录。
Use it well: A visual colour and a material identification are different statements. Looking green does not establish the pigment. Use the technical term when a reliable record supports it; otherwise describe the visible colour and leave the composition open.
Siena learning connection: This extension helps a student ask better questions about painted surfaces.
Try it elsewhere: Rewrite a pigment claim as an observation when no analysis is available.
Word reference: Museum of Fine Arts Boston, CAMEO
44. red lead
Say it: red LED
中文: 铅丹 · qiān dān
Meaning: An orange-red pigment made from lead tetroxide, historically used in painting and other coatings.
Example: In our paper-based study, red lead appeared as a historical material to identify, not something to handle.
中文例句: 在纸面研究中,铅丹是一种需要辨认的历史材料,而不是供人操作的东西。
Use it well: Lead is pronounced like led in this material name. The pigment is toxic, so this guide gives no preparation or handling exercise. Read historical descriptions critically and use written records or reproductions for the learning task.
Siena learning connection: This is an art-material extension with a clear safety boundary.
Try it elsewhere: Explain why knowing a material’s name does not make practical experimentation appropriate.
Word reference: Museum of Fine Arts Boston, CAMEO
45. glair
Say it: GLAIR
中文: 蛋清胶液 · dàn qīng jiāo yè
Meaning: An egg-white preparation historically used as a binder, size or glaze in artistic work.
Example: The label glair helped us distinguish the binding preparation from the coloured particles in the example diagram.
中文例句: “蛋清胶液”这一标签帮助我们把黏结剂与示意图中的有色颗粒区分开来。
Use it well: Do not automatically replace this with egg tempera: the latter commonly concerns an egg-yolk painting medium. A recipe name, a binder and a pigment occupy different roles in a materials explanation. Say which role you mean before discussing appearance.
Siena learning connection: This extension develops precise questions about how an image is held together.
Try it elsewhere: Label colour-producing material and binding material separately in a diagram.
Word reference: Museum of Fine Arts Boston, CAMEO · Museum of Fine Arts Boston, CAMEO
46. mordant gilding
Say it: MOR-duhnt GIL-ding
中文: 胶黏贴金法 · jiāo nián tiē jīn fǎ
Meaning: Attaching metal leaf with a prepared adhesive called a mordant, often for selected details over paint.
Example: Our diagram of mordant gilding placed the adhesive layer beneath the metal leaf.
中文例句: 我们的胶黏贴金法示意图把黏合层画在金属箔下方。
Use it well: Mordant names the adhesive role here, not one universal recipe. Do not assume that every mordant is oil-based. When comparing methods, explain how the leaf is attached rather than merely saying that both surfaces look gold.
Siena learning connection: This art-learning extension distinguishes a process from its glittering result.
Try it elsewhere: Explain a layered process in the order that the layers are applied.
Word reference: National Gallery, London
47. water gilding
Say it: WAW-tuh GIL-ding
中文: 水贴金法 · shuǐ tiē jīn fǎ
Meaning: A gilding method in which a prepared gesso or bole surface is moistened before metal leaf is laid.
Example: In the water gilding illustration, the class identified the prepared ground before describing the gold layer.
中文例句: 在水贴金法图示中,全班先辨认处理过的底层,再描述金层。
Use it well: Water is part of the attachment procedure; the phrase does not mean gold-coloured water. Compare the prepared ground with the adhesive used in mordant gilding. A verbal comparison is safer and more useful here than attempting a conservation treatment.
Siena learning connection: This extension supplies a contrasting gilding method for careful comparison.
Try it elsewhere: Write one sentence identifying the shared goal and another identifying the different method.
Word reference: Getty Research Institute
48. gold ground
Say it: gohld grownd
中文: 金底 · jīn dǐ
Meaning: A gold-leaf background in a painting, rather than a landscape or sky rendered entirely in coloured paint.
Example: The gold ground made our study group ask how background choices affect the way a figure is presented.
中文例句: 金底让我们的学习小组思考,背景的选择如何影响人物的呈现方式。
Use it well: Ground refers to the pictorial background in this expression. It does not tell you that an entire object is solid gold. Identify whether you are describing the visible design, the metal leaf or the preparatory material beneath it.
Siena learning connection: This extension supports close looking at the Sienese painting tradition.
Try it elsewhere: Describe a background without making an unsupported claim about the object’s total material.
Word reference: National Gallery, London · The Metropolitan Museum of Art
49. mastic resin
Say it: MAS-tik REZ-in
中文: 乳香黄连木树脂 · rǔ xiāng huáng lián mù shù zhī
Meaning: A natural resin from the mastic tree, used historically in varnishes and related artistic materials.
Example: The conservation report named mastic resin, but our summary did not pretend that we could identify it by shine alone.
中文例句: 保护修复报告提到乳香黄连木树脂,但我们的摘要没有假装仅凭光泽就能辨认它。
Use it well: The full expression separates this plant resin from modern building products also called mastic. In an art description, the gloss may be visible while the resin’s identity remains a matter for records or analysis. Keep those levels of certainty separate.
Siena learning connection: This extension links plant products with the study of painted surfaces.
Try it elsewhere: Turn a visual impression into a research question about material identity.
Word reference: Museum of Fine Arts Boston, CAMEO
50. copal
Say it: KOH-puhl
中文: 柯巴树脂 · kē bā shù zhī
Meaning: A name for several hard natural resins, including partly fossilised forms, historically used in varnish manufacture.
Example: Our material card for copal left room for the particular resin’s origin instead of treating the name as one exact species.
中文例句: 我们的柯巴树脂材料卡为具体树脂的来源留出位置,没有把这个名称当成某一种树种。
Use it well: This is a material group, so the name alone does not establish one botanical source or age. Qualify the particular sample when reliable information is available. An umbrella term can be useful, but it should not conceal differences within the group.
Siena learning connection: This is a comparative material extension, not a claim about a Siena collection.
Try it elsewhere: Explain why a group name may need a more specific description.
Word reference: Museum of Fine Arts Boston, CAMEO
Put the distinction to work
Choose four material or technique terms and arrange them into categories you can explain. For each category, write a question that a conservation record could help answer. Avoid claiming a chemical identity from colour alone. Next, compare two entries with a shared purpose but a different process. State the shared purpose first, then give the distinction that actually changes the explanation. Keep the exercise on paper rather than experimenting with historical materials.

6. Describe a horse without pretending to diagnose it
Entries 51–60. Back to contents
This chapter develops a general anatomy lesson. Work from a labelled reference drawing, model or authorised photograph. The aim is accurate location language and careful word-sense selection. It is not to predict performance, assess a racehorse or advise on treatment, and it does not require approaching or touching a living animal.
51. fetlock
Say it: FET-lok
中文: 球节 · qiú jié
Meaning: The joint region just above a horse’s pastern; the word can also name the hair tuft at the back of that region.
Example: On the reference drawing, Jia labelled the fetlock before checking the arrow with her teacher.
中文例句: 在参考图上,佳先标出球节,再请老师核对箭头。
Use it well: State whether you mean the joint or the hair if the distinction matters. A labelled diagram is a useful way to learn the location without approaching a live horse. Naming a body part does not qualify a visitor to assess an animal’s health.
Siena learning connection: The Palio motivates this general anatomy extension; no racehorse is being assessed.
Try it elsewhere: Write a caption that makes the intended anatomical sense explicit.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
52. pastern
Say it: PAS-tern
中文: 系部 · xì bù
Meaning: The part of a horse’s lower limb between the fetlock region and the top of the hoof.
Example: The learner moved the pastern label lower after comparing it with the marked fetlock and hoof.
中文例句: 学生把系部标签下移,因为他比较了图中标出的球节和蹄。
Use it well: Use adjacent landmarks to define a location clearly. The pastern is a region, while a particular pastern bone is a more specific structure. Choose a diagram and a level of detail appropriate to the question instead of treating every label as interchangeable.
Siena learning connection: This extension practises relational description through equine anatomy.
Try it elsewhere: Describe a location using between and two reliable reference points.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
53. hock
Say it: HOK
中文: 飞节 · fēi jié
Meaning: The prominent joint region in a horse’s hind leg corresponding anatomically to the ankle.
Example: Our sketch placed the hock on the hind leg, and we checked that choice against the anatomy reference.
中文例句: 我们的草图把飞节标在后腿上,并根据解剖参考资料核对。
Use it well: The selected sense concerns anatomy. Hock has other meanings in English, so include horse or hind leg when the context could be unclear. Never infer an injury from a drawing exercise or use the term to present an unqualified diagnosis.
Siena learning connection: This extension builds precise observation rather than racing advice.
Try it elsewhere: Write a sentence that rules out the word’s non-anatomical meanings.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
54. withers
Say it: WITH-erz; th as in this
中文: 鬐甲 · qí jiǎ
Meaning: The ridge at the top of a horse’s shoulders, near the base of the neck.
Example: The withers were easier to locate after we compared the side view with the labelled outline.
中文例句: 我们比较侧视图和带标签的轮廓图后,更容易找到鬐甲。
Use it well: This anatomical noun has a plural form: the withers are is natural usage. It is different from the verb withers in a plant withers. Read the grammar and subject together rather than selecting a meaning from spelling alone.
Siena learning connection: This entry combines an anatomical landmark with a useful grammar distinction.
Try it elsewhere: Write one sentence with the anatomical noun and one with the unrelated verb.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
55. forelock
Say it: FOR-lok
中文: 额鬃 · é zōng
Meaning: The lock of hair falling from the front of a horse’s head.
Example: In the portrait exercise, a dark forelock partly covered the horse’s forehead.
中文例句: 在肖像练习中,一撮深色额鬃遮住了马的部分前额。
Use it well: Fore- points to the front, which can help you remember the location. Keep your description limited to visible hair rather than inferring temperament from its appearance. A feature in a portrait belongs to the depicted animal, not necessarily every member of a breed.
Siena learning connection: This extension helps describe a horse in an image with greater precision.
Try it elsewhere: Write a visual detail without attaching a personality judgement to it.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
56. mane
Say it: MAYN
中文: 鬃毛 · zōng máo
Meaning: The long hair growing along a horse’s neck, or comparable prominent hair in certain other mammals.
Example: The painted mane formed a dark line that helped us follow the curve of the horse’s neck.
中文例句: 画中的鬃毛形成一条深色线条,帮助我们看清马颈的曲线。
Use it well: Mane sounds like main but has a different spelling and meaning. It names hair rather than the neck beneath it. In visual analysis, explain how the artist depicts that hair instead of making unsupported claims about the real animal.
Siena learning connection: This word transfers easily from anatomy to careful image description.
Try it elsewhere: Use mane and main correctly in two connected sentences.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
57. croup
Say it: KROOP
中文: 臀部 · tún bù
Meaning: The upper hindquarter or rump region of a horse or another four-legged animal.
Example: Our anatomy worksheet asked us to locate the croup without confusing the body region with the tail.
中文例句: 我们的解剖学习单要求找出臀部,不把这个身体区域与尾巴混淆。
Use it well: The word has an unrelated medical meaning in human health. In this guide it is only an animal-body term. Give the subject explicitly when writing for a general reader so that the intended sense does not depend on specialist knowledge.
Siena learning connection: This extension reinforces the importance of selecting the right dictionary sense.
Try it elsewhere: Explain the chosen meaning to a reader unfamiliar with horses.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
58. poll
Say it: POHL
中文: 枕部 · zhěn bù
Meaning: The top or back of the head; in horse description, the region behind the ears.
Example: We placed the poll label behind the ears in our simplified horse-head diagram.
中文例句: 我们在简化的马头示意图上,把枕部标签放在耳朵后方。
Use it well: This anatomical sense is different from a survey or vote. The surrounding nouns make the meaning clear: the horse’s poll gives the reader a strong clue. When a short word has several meanings, a precise context is often more helpful than a longer definition.
Siena learning connection: This entry connects a local horse theme with general vocabulary flexibility.
Try it elsewhere: Write two sentences showing two different senses of poll.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
59. cannon bone
Say it: KAN-uhn bohn
中文: 管骨 · guǎn gǔ
Meaning: The principal long bone in the lower part of a horse’s limb, between the knee or hock and the fetlock.
Example: The model’s cannon bone was coloured differently so that the class could follow the sequence of leg structures.
中文例句: 模型的管骨涂成不同颜色,让全班能看清腿部结构的排列顺序。
Use it well: Retain bone in the phrase when teaching the anatomical sense. The word cannon alone can suggest a weapon or a broader leg region. Locate the structure using its neighbours, and keep anatomical identification separate from claims about racing ability.
Siena learning connection: This extension completes a sequence of connected lower-limb landmarks.
Try it elsewhere: Describe the order of three labelled structures from top to bottom.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
60. coronet
Say it: kor-uh-NET
中文: 蹄冠 · tí guān
Meaning: In horse anatomy, the band-like region at the top of the hoof where the hoof meets the skin.
Example: Our diagram used coronet for the border above the hoof, with a separate label for the rest of the pastern.
中文例句: 我们的图用蹄冠标示蹄上方的交界处,并另行标出系部的其余部分。
Use it well: Coronet can also mean a small crown, but the anatomical meaning is intended here. The visual idea of a surrounding band may aid recall without replacing the definition. Use a reference image rather than touching an animal to check your guess.
Siena learning connection: This extension teaches a boundary region instead of another whole limb segment.
Try it elsewhere: Explain how a boundary label differs from the name of the area beside it.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
Put the distinction to work
Choose five labels and ask a partner to place them on a suitable reference diagram. Check every placement against the reference rather than by confidence alone. Then write two sentences using relational phrases such as between, above or behind. Select one term with another English meaning and show how context prevents confusion. Keep health judgements out of the exercise: identifying a part is a different task from assessing its condition.

7. Trace water through a defined system
Entries 61–70. Back to contents
Start by drawing a boundary around the imaginary system you are describing. Give your arrows clear labels and state whether they represent a route, a quantity or an interaction with a surface. These are transferable scientific ideas, not findings about the geology beneath Siena. A model should show its assumptions as clearly as its conclusions.
61. percolation
Say it: per-kuh-LAY-shuhn
中文: 渗滤 · shèn lǜ
Meaning: The movement of liquid through the pores or small openings of a material.
Example: Our classroom diagram used percolation to describe water moving through the sample, without claiming that it had become safe to drink.
中文例句: 我们的课堂示意图用渗滤描述水穿过样品的过程,没有声称水已变得可以安全饮用。
Use it well: The process describes movement through a material. It does not by itself establish filtration quality or purity. In an explanation, state the material, the moving liquid and the question being investigated before drawing conclusions about the result.
Siena learning connection: The Bottini inspire this general water-science extension; it is not a local test result.
Try it elsewhere: Write a process description that avoids making an unsupported safety claim.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
62. hydraulic head
Say it: hy-DRAW-lik hed
中文: 水头 · shuǐ tóu
Meaning: A measure of water’s mechanical energy per unit weight, expressed as an equivalent height.
Example: The exercise compared hydraulic head at two points before asking which way groundwater might move.
中文例句: 练习先比较两点的水头,再询问地下水可能向哪个方向流动。
Use it well: Groundwater head combines elevation and pressure contributions. Hydraulic gradient describes how head changes over distance. Do not use the two terms as synonyms. A drawing should state its reference level and units before comparing values from different locations.
Siena learning connection: This is a scientific extension prompted by Siena’s water engineering.
Try it elsewhere: Explain why two height-like values need a common reference before comparison.
Word reference: The Groundwater Project
63. aquiclude
Say it: AK-wih-klood
中文: 隔水层 · gé shuǐ céng
Meaning: A geological layer that effectively prevents groundwater from passing through it and can confine water beside it.
Example: In the idealised cross-section, an aquiclude formed a boundary that the student had to include in the explanation.
中文例句: 在理想化剖面图中,隔水层构成了一道边界,学生必须把它纳入解释。
Use it well: Effectively impermeable is a model description at a relevant scale. It should not become an absolute claim about every crack in every rock. State the evidence and scale when using the term in an actual investigation.
Siena learning connection: This extension explains a possible boundary in a water model, not Siena’s mapped geology.
Try it elsewhere: Add a clear assumption to a simplified scientific diagram.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster · The Groundwater Project
64. aquitard
Say it: AK-wih-tard
中文: 弱透水层 · ruò tòu shuǐ céng
Meaning: A geological layer that permits groundwater to pass only slowly, restricting movement relative to a neighbouring aquifer.
Example: Our model included an aquitard, so we avoided drawing its boundary as completely impermeable.
中文例句: 我们的模型包含弱透水层,因此没有把它的边界画成完全不透水。
Use it well: The useful distinction is restriction rather than total exclusion. Compare this with aquiclude using the actual degree of flow represented in the model. A small change in a word can change the physical behaviour your explanation allows.
Siena learning connection: This extension introduces a different kind of subsurface boundary.
Try it elsewhere: Write two contrasting sentences using permits slowly and effectively prevents.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
65. depression storage
Say it: dih-PRESH-uhn STOR-ij
中文: 洼地蓄水 · wā dì xù shuǐ
Meaning: Water temporarily held in low places on the land surface after rain or snowmelt.
Example: Our model recorded depression storage in the shallow hollow before drawing any route by which that water might leave.
中文例句: 我们的模型先记录浅洼中的洼地蓄水,再画出水可能离开的路径。
Use it well: Storage describes an amount held within a place, rather than a flow through it. A puddle can be represented as a temporary store without assuming how quickly it will disappear. Keep the stored quantity separate from the rates of processes that add or remove water.
Siena learning connection: This extension adds a surface store to the imaginary water-system model.
Try it elsewhere: Describe a container’s contents separately from the rate at which they change.

66. water budget
Say it: WAW-tuh BUJ-it
中文: 水量收支 · shuǐ liàng shōu zhī
Meaning: An accounting of water entering, leaving and changing in storage within a defined system and time period.
Example: Our water budget used invented classroom values and clearly labelled the period as one day.
中文例句: 我们的水量收支使用虚构的课堂数值,并明确标注时段为一天。
Use it well: Budget concerns water quantities here, not the price of a utility bill. Identify the boundary, time interval and units before balancing the amounts. An unexplained remainder is a question to investigate rather than a number to erase.
Siena learning connection: The city’s supply network motivates this transferable systems-thinking exercise.
Try it elsewhere: Name the boundary and time period for a simple household water model.
Word reference: U.S. Geological Survey
67. interflow
Say it: IN-ter-floh
中文: 壤中流 · rǎng zhōng liú
Meaning: The lateral movement of water through shallow soil layers towards a stream or drainage channel.
Example: In the hillside model, interflow followed a shallow sideways route rather than the surface arrow.
中文例句: 在坡地模型中,壤中流沿浅层侧向路径移动,而不是沿地表箭头。
Use it well: The hydrological sense is more specific than the ordinary idea of things flowing together. Include shallow soil and lateral movement in your explanation. Do not attach the term to an actual hillside merely because its surface slopes.
Siena learning connection: This is a general process extension; the diagram is not a survey of Siena.
Try it elsewhere: Describe two routes that reach the same destination by different paths.
Word reference: NOAA National Weather Service
68. adsorption
Say it: ad-SORP-shuhn
中文: 吸附 · xī fù
Meaning: The accumulation of molecules on a surface, rather than their uptake throughout the interior of a material.
Example: Our adsorption diagram showed the selected molecules at the particle’s surface.
中文例句: 我们的吸附示意图把选定分子画在颗粒表面。
Use it well: Keep the d in adsorption. Absorption is the different idea of taking a substance into the bulk of a material. A useful explanation states where the molecules are located, rather than relying on the vague verb take in.
Siena learning connection: This scientific extension adds surface behaviour to the study of water and materials.
Try it elsewhere: Write a contrast that locates the substance on the surface or within the material.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
69. stemflow
Say it: STEM-floh
中文: 树干径流 · shù gàn jìng liú
Meaning: Rainwater that reaches the ground by running down a plant’s stem or a tree’s trunk.
Example: We added stemflow to the rain diagram after noticing that not every arrow should fall straight from a leaf.
中文例句: 注意到并非每个箭头都应从叶片直落之后,我们在雨水示意图中加入树干径流。
Use it well: Name the route the water follows. This term concerns drainage along the stem or trunk, not water moving inside the plant. Do not confuse an external rain pathway with the internal transport system represented in a different kind of diagram.
Siena learning connection: This extension connects the water chapter with the following botanical study.
Try it elsewhere: Explain an external pathway without confusing it with an internal one.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
70. throughfall
Say it: THROO-fawl
中文: 穿透雨 · chuān tòu yǔ
Meaning: Rainwater reaching the ground beneath vegetation by passing through canopy gaps or dripping from leaves and branches.
Example: In the exercise, throughfall was collected away from the trunk so that the two rain pathways remained distinct.
中文例句: 在练习中,穿透雨在远离树干的位置收集,以便区分两种雨水路径。
Use it well: Compare the route with stemflow instead of treating all water beneath a tree as one category. Say what your imagined collector includes and excludes. A measurement design becomes clearer when its categories are defined before the numbers are recorded.
Siena learning connection: This is a general rain-pathway extension, not a measurement from the botanical garden.
Try it elsewhere: Describe where you would place two collectors and what each is intended to represent.
Word reference: USDA Forest Service
Put the distinction to work
Design a paper model of a small hillside after rain. Use invented values only if you label them as invented and give consistent units. Choose three process words and explain why each belongs on a particular arrow or boundary. Ask a partner to challenge one assumption. Revise the diagram so that a reader can tell the difference between what was defined, what was observed and what was inferred.

8. Observe plant structure and development
Entries 71–80. Back to contents
The botanical chapter extends into general plant learning. It makes no promise that a named example species is on display. Use a clearly identified reference or a specimen label, and look without picking or disturbing plants. Ask whether your word describes an arrangement, a location, a direction, a growth pattern or a response.
71. mesophyte
Say it: MEZ-uh-fyte
中文: 中生植物 · zhōng shēng zhí wù
Meaning: A plant adapted to an environment with a moderate supply of moisture.
Example: The worksheet described the plant as a mesophyte, then asked what evidence justified that ecological label.
中文例句: 学习单把这种植物描述为中生植物,然后询问什么证据支持这个生态标签。
Use it well: Moderate refers to moisture conditions in this sense, not an intermediate plant size. Avoid identifying the category from one photograph alone. Ask about the environment and growth requirements rather than assuming that an ordinary-looking leaf reveals everything.
Siena learning connection: The university garden motivates this extension; no specific local specimen is claimed.
Try it elsewhere: Explain a classification by stating the condition it depends on.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
72. phyllotaxis
Say it: fil-uh-TAK-sis
中文: 叶序 · yè xù
Meaning: The arrangement of leaves along a stem and in relation to one another.
Example: Our phyllotaxis sketch recorded where each leaf joined the stem rather than simply copying its outline.
中文例句: 我们的叶序草图记录每片叶与茎连接的位置,而不只是描摹叶的轮廓。
Use it well: Arrangement and shape answer different questions. A student can describe a leaf’s outline accurately while still missing the pattern of attachment. Rotate a reference drawing mentally or compare views before assuming that overlapping leaves share the same point of origin.
Siena learning connection: This extension offers a structured way to look at plant architecture.
Try it elsewhere: Write one observation about shape and a second about arrangement.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
73. rachis
Say it: RAY-kis
中文: 叶轴 · yè zhóu
Meaning: In the compound-leaf sense used here, the central axis that bears the leaflets.
Example: We labelled the rachis on the compound-leaf diagram before counting the attached leaflets.
中文例句: 我们先在复叶图上标出叶轴,再数附着的小叶。
Use it well: State the sense because rachis also occurs in descriptions of flower clusters and feathers. In this entry, the leaflets and their supporting axis are the focus. A precise noun phrase can keep one technical word from drifting between different structures.
Siena learning connection: This botanical extension encourages clear part-to-whole descriptions.
Try it elsewhere: Explain the difference between a supporting axis and the parts attached to it.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
74. seismonasty
Say it: size-moh-NAS-tee
中文: 感震性运动 · gǎn zhèn xìng yùn dòng
Meaning: A non-directional plant movement triggered by mechanical shock or disturbance.
Example: Our discussion of seismonasty used a recorded demonstration rather than repeated touching of a garden plant.
中文例句: 我们讨论感震性运动时使用演示录像,而不是反复触碰园中的植物。
Use it well: The trigger matters: mechanical disturbance is the point here, unlike day-and-night-related leaf movements. The movement’s direction does not depend on the direction of the stimulus. Identify the stimulus and the response separately before choosing the term.
Siena learning connection: This is a general physiology extension, not a claim about an exhibited species.
Try it elsewhere: State the trigger in a process explanation without assuming a motive for the plant.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
75. catkin
Say it: KAT-kin
中文: 柔荑花序 · róu tí huā xù
Meaning: An elongated cluster of small, usually petal-less, unisexual flowers, often with a soft or hanging appearance.
Example: The close-up of a catkin reminded us to describe a cluster rather than call the whole structure one flower.
中文例句: 柔荑花序的特写提醒我们描述的是一簇花,而不是把整个结构称作一朵花。
Use it well: A familiar visual shape can hide many small units. Ask what the apparent object is made of before counting it. The term does not identify the tree species by itself, so retain the specimen label or another reliable identification source.
Siena learning connection: This extension trains the eye to distinguish a cluster from its individual parts.
Try it elsewhere: Describe a grouped structure without confusing the whole with a single component.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
76. basipetal
Say it: bay-SIP-ih-tuhl
中文: 向基的 · xiàng jī de
Meaning: Proceeding or developing towards the base of a plant structure, from its tip region.
Example: Our basipetal arrow pointed towards the labelled base, even after the page was turned sideways.
中文例句: 即使把纸横过来,我们表示向基方向的箭头仍指向已标出的基部。
Use it well: Define direction relative to the plant structure, not to the top of your page. Towards the base remains meaningful when the drawing is rotated. The word describes a direction or sequence and should not be used as a vague substitute for downward.
Siena learning connection: This extension helps make botanical diagrams independent of page orientation.
Try it elsewhere: Rotate a sketch and check whether its directional description still works.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
77. acropetal
Say it: uh-KROP-ih-tuhl
中文: 向顶的 · xiàng dǐng de
Meaning: Proceeding or developing towards the tip of a plant structure, from its base region.
Example: The acropetal sequence in the diagram began near the base and continued towards the labelled tip.
中文例句: 图中的向顶顺序从基部附近开始,延伸至标出的顶端。
Use it well: Use this as the directional counterpart to basipetal. A single arrow should make clear which structure provides the reference. Saying up can be misleading when a branch bends or when the illustration is not upright.
Siena learning connection: This extension supplies the opposite direction for a precise paired comparison.
Try it elsewhere: Describe a sequence twice, once in everyday language and once with the technical adjective.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
78. sympodial
Say it: sim-POH-dee-uhl
中文: 合轴的 · hé zhóu de
Meaning: Describing growth in which successive side axes continue development after an earlier main tip stops extending.
Example: The sympodial diagram used different colours to show that the apparent main axis was built from successive parts.
中文例句: 合轴生长示意图用不同颜色表明,表面上的主轴由连续的不同部分组成。
Use it well: An apparently continuous line does not necessarily come from one continuously growing tip. Describe the developmental pattern rather than judging by silhouette alone. This adjective is useful with branching or growth when explaining how the visible structure formed.
Siena learning connection: This botanical extension links an outward form with a growth history.
Try it elsewhere: Explain how several successive parts can produce one apparent line.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
79. monopodial
Say it: mon-uh-POH-dee-uhl
中文: 单轴的 · dān zhóu de
Meaning: Describing growth that continues through one persistent principal axis or stem.
Example: Our monopodial model kept one main axis visible while adding side branches in a different colour.
中文例句: 我们的单轴生长模型保留一条清晰的主轴,并以另一种颜色添加侧枝。
Use it well: The term does not mean that the plant has no branches. It concerns the continuing main growth axis. Compare it with sympodial using a developmental diagram rather than assuming that one plant simply looks straighter than another.
Siena learning connection: This extension introduces a genuinely different pattern of plant construction.
Try it elsewhere: Write a comparison that explains the main axis without erasing side branches.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
80. cauliflory
Say it: KAW-lih-flor-ee
中文: 老茎生花 · lǎo jīng shēng huā
Meaning: The production of flowers directly on a plant’s main stem or older woody branches.
Example: The photograph of cauliflory led us to check exactly where the flowers joined the woody structure.
中文例句: 老茎生花的照片促使我们检查花究竟连接在木质结构的什么位置。
Use it well: The key feature is the location of flowering, not the size or colour of the blossoms. Do not confuse the word with cauliflower. A location-based description is often more informative than calling a plant unusual.
Siena learning connection: This extension broadens plant observation without promising an example in Siena.
Try it elsewhere: Replace an impression of strangeness with a precise statement of location.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
Put the distinction to work
Create a plant-study page with a drawing, a date and a clearly stated source. Choose one term about arrangement and another about development. Explain what a single still image can show and what would require several observations over time. If the identification remains uncertain, mark the uncertainty directly. A well-labelled unanswered question is more useful than an unsupported technical word attached to the wrong feature.

9. Hear timing, ornament and repeated patterns
Entries 81–90. Back to contents
Choose a short, existing educational recording and listen more than once. On the first pass, write your overall response. On the next, select one feature you can describe with a term from this chapter. Do not assume that learning the definition guarantees that you will recognise the feature immediately in every performance.
81. agogic accent
Say it: uh-GOJ-ik AK-sent
中文: 时值重音 · shí zhí zhòng yīn
Meaning: Emphasis created by giving a note relatively more time, rather than simply making it louder.
Example: The pianist’s agogic accent made one note feel important in our imagined listening example.
中文例句: 在我们想象的聆听示例中,钢琴家的时值重音使一个音显得格外重要。
Use it well: Say how the emphasis is created. Louder and longer are different observations. When listening, describe a perceived delay cautiously and compare it with the surrounding phrase rather than assuming every expressive change is an error in keeping time.
Siena learning connection: The Chigiana connection motivates this independent listening extension.
Try it elsewhere: Describe emphasis once through volume and once through duration.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
82. appoggiatura
Say it: uh-poj-uh-TOOR-uh
中文: 倚音 · yǐ yīn
Meaning: An ornamental note that precedes and leans towards a principal melodic note.
Example: In our annotated score, the appoggiatura received its own question about how the phrase should be shaped.
中文例句: 在我们加注的乐谱中,倚音旁专门写下了一个关于乐句处理的问题。
Use it well: The notation and style matter, so do not assume that every small written note has the same timing. Identify the main melodic note and the ornament’s relation to it. Ask a teacher to demonstrate contrasting interpretations rather than reducing expression to one rule.
Siena learning connection: This is a general music-reading extension, not a promised academy lesson.
Try it elsewhere: Explain which note is principal and which note decorates it.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
83. acciaccatura
Say it: ah-chak-uh-TOOR-uh
中文: 碎音 · suì yīn
Meaning: In its historical keyboard sense, a brief dissonant note struck with a main note or chord and released immediately.
Example: The keyboard demonstration used an acciaccatura to let the class hear a short-lived clash.
中文例句: 键盘演示用一个碎音,让全班听到短暂的不协和音。
Use it well: This entry deliberately selects the historical crushed-note sense. Modern musicians also use the term for a very short grace note, so ask which usage a score or teacher intends. A definition becomes clearer when its period and musical context are stated.
Siena learning connection: This extension illustrates why one music term can require a sense label.
Try it elsewhere: Write a question that checks an unfamiliar term’s intended historical meaning.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster · Collins Dictionary
84. hemiola
Say it: hem-ee-OH-luh
中文: 赫米奥拉节奏 · hè mǐ ào lā jié zòu
Meaning: A rhythmic regrouping in which six equal units are heard as two groups of three or three groups of two.
Example: Our hemiola exercise kept six taps equal while changing which taps received emphasis.
中文例句: 我们的赫米奥拉节奏练习保持六次敲击等长,只改变哪些敲击受到强调。
Use it well: The grouping changes while the underlying units can remain equal. Count carefully before calling the passage faster. A spoken pattern such as one-two-three, one-two-three compared with one-two, one-two, one-two can make the distinction audible.
Siena learning connection: This independent exercise connects musical listening with grouping and pattern.
Try it elsewhere: Explain what changed and what stayed constant in a six-unit pattern.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
85. tremolo
Say it: TREM-uh-loh
中文: 震音 · zhèn yīn
Meaning: A rapid repetition of one musical tone or rapid alternation of tones, creating a trembling effect.
Example: The tremolo in our listening example continued while the student followed the written phrase.
中文例句: 在我们的聆听示例中,学生跟着书写的乐句阅读,震音同时持续。
Use it well: In the selected instrumental sense, repeated attacks or alternating tones are central. Do not identify the technique merely because a sound seems emotional. Describe the audible repetition, then consult the score or demonstration if the mechanism remains uncertain.
Siena learning connection: This extension gives a precise name to one kind of instrumental texture.
Try it elsewhere: Replace a mood-only description with an observation about repeated sound.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
86. anacrusis
Say it: an-uh-KROO-sis
中文: 弱起 · ruò qǐ
Meaning: One or more musical notes that lead into the first strong beat of a phrase.
Example: We counted the anacrusis before beginning the main pattern together.
中文例句: 我们先数弱起的音,再一起开始主要节奏型。
Use it well: The phrase may start before the first full strong beat you expect. Mark the entry clearly when explaining a passage to another learner. Confusing the opening notes with a complete first bar can make an otherwise careful description hard to follow.
Siena learning connection: This extension supports coordinated listening and clear instructions.
Try it elsewhere: Describe a beginning that leads into a main event rather than starting on it.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
87. mordent
Say it: MOR-duhnt
中文: 波音 · bō yīn
Meaning: In the lower-neighbour sense used here, a short musical ornament moving from the main note to the note below and back.
Example: The teacher played the mordent slowly so our fictional class could hear its brief shape.
中文例句: 老师放慢速度演奏波音,让我们虚构的班级听清其短小的形态。
Use it well: This entry uses the lower-neighbour sense. Check the score or ask a teacher before interpreting an ornament sign. The term sounds like mordant in gilding but belongs to a different field. Keep the spelling tied to the subject so that an art note does not become a music instruction.
Siena learning connection: This extension creates a useful comparison between sound-alike specialist words.
Try it elsewhere: Write one sentence about an ornament and another about a gilding adhesive.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
88. basso continuo
Say it: BAS-oh kuhn-TIN-yoo-oh
中文: 通奏低音 · tōng zòu dī yīn
Meaning: A continuous bass foundation with harmonic accompaniment, characteristic of much Baroque music.
Example: Our programme-note exercise asked which instruments supplied the basso continuo in the chosen recording.
中文例句: 我们的节目说明练习询问,选定录音中由哪些乐器提供通奏低音。
Use it well: Name the musical function before assuming a fixed instrument combination. A bass line and the harmony built with it belong to the same accompaniment practice, but the performers and instruments can vary. Use the actual recording credits when discussing a particular performance.
Siena learning connection: This extension fits the academy’s documented interest in early music.
Try it elsewhere: Write a question that distinguishes a musical role from the instrument fulfilling it.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster · Accademia Musicale Chigiana
89. cross-rhythm
Say it: KROSS RITH-uhm; th as in this
中文: 交叉节奏 · jiāo chā jié zòu
Meaning: The simultaneous use of rhythmic patterns that contrast in their grouping or accent.
Example: One student tapped the first pattern while another introduced the cross-rhythm in our classroom exercise.
中文例句: 在课堂练习中,一名学生敲第一种节奏型,另一名学生加入交叉节奏。
Use it well: Simultaneous is important: two different patterns played one after another do not by themselves create the effect. State which layers overlap and how their groupings differ. A description of the relationship is more useful than saying the rhythm is complicated.
Siena learning connection: This is an independent pattern-listening extension inspired by musical study.
Try it elsewhere: Explain an interaction between two patterns without relying on the word complex.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
90. isorhythm
Say it: EYE-soh-rith-uhm; th as in this
中文: 等节奏 · děng jié zòu
Meaning: A compositional technique in which a fixed rhythmic pattern recurs through a voice part, especially in medieval music.
Example: Our isorhythm chart tracked the returning duration pattern separately from the sequence of pitches.
中文例句: 我们的等节奏图表把反复出现的时值型与音高顺序分开追踪。
Use it well: Rhythm and pitch are separate features to follow. Repeated durations need not mean that every aspect of a phrase is identical. State exactly which pattern returns before calling an entire musical passage a repetition of another.
Siena learning connection: This extension connects medieval cultural curiosity with a specific analytical method.
Try it elsewhere: Describe a repeated pattern while identifying one feature that may change.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
Put the distinction to work
Write a listening note with three parts: what you heard, the term you think applies and the evidence you would use to check it. A score, demonstration or teacher’s explanation may help. If two people disagree, compare the exact moment they are discussing before comparing their labels. End with one sentence about how the feature contributes to the passage, clearly separating observation from personal response.

10. Connect performance choices with sound and craft
Entries 91–100. Back to contents
This final chapter moves between directions, listening ideas and the design of a musical tool. Ask which kind of information each term provides. A direction in a score, an acoustic explanation and a maker’s description do different jobs. An interesting connection should make your account more accurate, not encourage a practical experiment on an unfamiliar instrument.
91. scordatura
Say it: skor-duh-TOOR-uh
中文: 变格定弦 · biàn gé dìng xián
Meaning: Deliberately using a non-standard tuning on a stringed instrument for a particular musical effect.
Example: The recording notes identified scordatura, so our review described an intentional choice rather than calling the instrument out of tune.
中文例句: 录音说明指出使用变格定弦,因此我们的评论把它描述为有意选择,而没有说乐器走音。
Use it well: Intentional alternative tuning and inaccurate tuning are different claims. Check the score or programme before deciding which is relevant. Do not retune an unfamiliar instrument as an experiment; the vocabulary exercise is to recognise and explain the stated musical choice.
Siena learning connection: The academy has discussed scordatura in its published music commentary.
Try it elsewhere: Rewrite a mistaken criticism as an evidence-based description of an artistic decision.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster · Accademia Musicale Chigiana
92. col legno
Say it: kol LEN-yoh
中文: 弓木奏法 · gōng mù zòu fǎ
Meaning: A direction to use the wooden part of a string player’s bow rather than its hair.
Example: When col legno appeared in the score, the student asked for a demonstration before interpreting the sound.
中文例句: 当乐谱出现弓木奏法时,学生先请求演示,再解释声音。
Use it well: The phrase specifies the contact material, not simply a loud or percussive result. With a borrowed or valuable bow, do not try the technique without the owner’s and teacher’s guidance.
Siena learning connection: This is a general performance-language extension, not an instruction to handle museum objects.
Try it elsewhere: Describe a technique by the part of the tool it uses.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
93. sul ponticello
Say it: sool pon-tih-CHEL-oh
中文: 近琴桥奏法 · jìn qín qiáo zòu fǎ
Meaning: A direction to bow close to the bridge of a stringed instrument, bringing out higher harmonics and a nasal tone.
Example: The sul ponticello example made our class listen for a change in tone colour rather than a new melody.
中文例句: 近琴桥奏法的示例让全班留意音色变化,而不是寻找新的旋律。
Use it well: The phrase tells the performer where to bow. It does not itself specify the notes or tempo. In a listening account, separate location, resulting sound and your reaction; those are connected but different kinds of statement.
Siena learning connection: This extension makes a physical location meaningful in an acoustic description.
Try it elsewhere: Write a cause-and-effect sentence about an explicitly demonstrated technique.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
94. sul tasto
Say it: sool TAH-stoh
中文: 指板上奏法 · zhǐ bǎn shàng zòu fǎ
Meaning: A direction to bow over the fingerboard, usually producing a softer, thinner tone.
Example: We compared sul tasto with bowing near the bridge while keeping the example melody unchanged.
中文例句: 我们保持示例旋律不变,比较指板上奏法与靠近琴桥的运弓方式。
Use it well: This refers to the bow’s contact region, not merely to playing quietly. Compare it with sul ponticello by naming both locations. A controlled listening comparison becomes clearer when one variable is changed and the rest are kept as similar as possible.
Siena learning connection: This extension provides a contrasting contact point for the previous entry.
Try it elsewhere: Explain why a fair comparison should hold some features constant.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
95. combination tone
Say it: kom-bih-NAY-shuhn tohn
中文: 组合音 · zǔ hé yīn
Meaning: An additional perceived tone that can arise when two tones sound together because hearing does not always respond linearly to them.
Example: In the recorded demonstration, the learner reported a possible combination tone and checked the explanation before writing a conclusion.
中文例句: 在录像演示中,学习者报告可能听到组合音,并在下结论前核对解释。
Use it well: Report what was heard separately from the proposed cause. An additional perceived pitch does not automatically mean that another musician played it. Keep listening levels comfortable and use an existing educational demonstration rather than escalating volume to chase an effect.
Siena learning connection: This is an acoustics extension; no special effect is promised at a Siena concert.
Try it elsewhere: Separate a listening observation from the mechanism offered to explain it.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
96. sautillé
Say it: soh-tee-YAY
中文: 自然跳弓 · zì rán tiào gōng
Meaning: A fast springing bow stroke in which the bow’s own elasticity produces the repeated rebounds.
Example: The slow-motion demonstration of sautillé helped us distinguish natural rebounds from separately controlled lifts.
中文例句: 自然跳弓的慢动作演示帮助我们区分自然弹跳与逐次控制的抬弓。
Use it well: This term concerns a fast elastic response rather than a series of individually directed slower bounces. Teachers may use overlapping bow-stroke terminology, so ask for a demonstration. Describing the movement precisely is more useful than arguing over a label without hearing the passage.
Siena learning connection: This extension develops the performance detail behind apparently effortless playing.
Try it elsewhere: Describe a demonstrated movement without claiming that reading about it gives practical mastery.
Word reference: CelloBello, performer teaching resource
97. battuta
Say it: bah-TOO-tah
中文: 节拍;小节 · jié pāi; xiǎo jié
Meaning: An Italian musical term for the beat or measure, depending on the expression and context.
Example: The student circled battuta and asked whether the instruction referred to the beat or the whole measure.
中文例句: 学生圈出“拍子”这个词,并询问指令指的是节拍还是整个小节。
Use it well: Do not force a single English gloss onto every use. Check the surrounding direction and the edition’s terminology. In a conversation with a teacher, a short clarification question can prevent much more confusion than silently assuming the wrong counting unit.
Siena learning connection: This extension supports confident clarification of Italian musical directions.
Try it elsewhere: Write a question that checks the unit someone wants you to count.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
98. Klangfarbenmelodie
Say it: KLANG-far-buhn-mel-oh-DEE
中文: 音色旋律 · yīn sè xuán lǜ
Meaning: A musical idea in which changing tone colours help shape a melodic or connected musical line.
Example: Our Klangfarbenmelodie exercise followed the line as its colour moved between imagined instruments.
中文例句: 我们的音色旋律练习追踪一条乐线,看其音色如何在想象中的乐器间转换。
Use it well: Treat timbre as something to follow, rather than assuming that melody is only a sequence of pitches. The concept has been interpreted in different ways, so identify the particular passage and explain the changing sound colours you mean.
Siena learning connection: This modern-music extension connects with the academy’s wider contemporary interests.
Try it elsewhere: Describe continuity in a line even when the sound-producing instrument changes.
Word reference: Arnold Schönberg Center · Accademia Musicale Chigiana · Arnold Schönberg Center
99. ostinato
Say it: os-tih-NAH-toh
中文: 固定音型 · gù dìng yīn xíng
Meaning: A musical figure repeated persistently, often providing a recognisable foundation for other changing material.
Example: The ostinato stayed familiar while our fictional melody moved into a different register.
中文例句: 当我们虚构的旋律移至另一个音区时,固定音型仍保持熟悉的面貌。
Use it well: Identify what actually repeats: a rhythmic shape, a melodic figure or both. Repetition alone does not mean that the whole piece stands still. Explain how the recurring element interacts with change elsewhere rather than calling the music repetitive and stopping there.
Siena learning connection: This extension develops a useful vocabulary for continuity and variation.
Try it elsewhere: Describe one stable element and one changing element in a short passage.
Word reference: Merriam-Webster
100. bow camber
Say it: boh KAM-ber
中文: 弓杆弧度 · gōng gǎn hú dù
Meaning: The deliberately formed curve in a musical bow’s stick that contributes to its spring and response.
Example: The maker’s explanation of bow camber shifted our attention from decoration to the working shape of the tool.
中文例句: 制作者对弓杆弧度的解释,把我们的注意力从装饰转向工具的工作形态。
Use it well: Here camber concerns a string-instrument bow, not a road or wheel setting. Do not confuse the stick’s designed curve with the straight line of tensioned hair. Reading about the feature is not permission to bend or repair a bow yourself.
Siena learning connection: This extension connects musical performance with the craft of tool making.
Try it elsewhere: Explain how a designed shape can contribute to function without giving repair instructions.
Word reference: Yamaha Corporation
Put the distinction to work
Choose two terms from this chapter and one from an earlier chapter. Write a comparison based on a real shared question, such as how a designed material or movement affects an outcome. State where the comparison stops being useful. Then write a short paragraph for a beginner that keeps all three terms in their correct fields. A strong connection preserves the differences between the things being compared.

Use the words in connected English
The following model scenes are original writing exercises. They illustrate how to organise a paragraph and frame a question; they do not report actual visits, meals, performances or scientific observations.
Model 1: a thoughtful plan
Our Siena notebook began with a question rather than a checklist. We wanted to know how to describe a place without pretending that one photograph explained it. We marked Piazza del Campo on the map, left a space for an observation and added a second space for something we still needed to verify. By the end of the exercise, the unanswered questions felt useful rather than embarrassing.
Why it works: the paragraph gives the reader a purpose, a method and a small change in understanding. Its uncertainty is specific. Try rewriting it for a place you know, using only observations and decisions that you can honestly claim.
Model 2: from a word to a careful distinction
The two cards looked almost interchangeable until I read them slowly. One said water gilding; the other said mordant gilding. I stopped trying to sound knowledgeable and wrote a question beside each. What would a reliable description need to tell me? Which sentence in my first explanation was only a guess? That small pause made the next paragraph shorter and clearer.
Why it works: the paragraph models a learning decision instead of copying a definition. Write your own version with two terms you initially confused. Name the exact point at which your explanation became more careful.
Model 3: a listening notebook
I wrote tremolo in the margin, then added a question mark. My partner had noticed a different feature in the same passage. Instead of debating the labels immediately, we replayed the moment and described what each of us had heard. We agreed on the observation before checking the terminology. Our final note kept the question that the recording alone could not answer.
Why it works: the writer makes a method visible. There is an observation, a disagreement, a checking step and an honest limit. Use the same structure for a classroom discussion in science, history or visual art.
A five-day review that stays manageable
On day one, choose ten words from one route and say them aloud. On day two, cover the definitions and explain five in your own English. On day three, translate two examples back from Chinese, checking meaning rather than copying word order. On day four, write a short connected paragraph. On day five, revisit only the terms that caused confusion and add a personal example. Adjust the pace to the learner instead of treating the schedule as a test.
Three original practice tasks
Task A: write a 120-word imaginary visit plan using four place or cultural terms. Mark unconfirmed arrangements clearly. Task B: write a comparison of two scientific or artistic terms, naming one shared feature and one meaningful difference. Task C: write an 80-word listening or observation note with an explicit question that remains open. In every task, underline the words that do real explanatory work and remove any term used only to make the writing look advanced.
A simple checking rubric
Check meaning first: does each chosen term keep its intended sense? Check evidence next: can the reader distinguish a sourced fact, an observation and an invented scene? Then check connection: do the sentences build one useful idea rather than display unrelated vocabulary? Finally, check audience: would a beginner understand the explanation without being talked down to? A shorter, accurate paragraph is a better result than a longer one held together by uncertain claims.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to learn all one hundred words?
No. Begin with a route that matches your purpose, then choose five to ten words you can use meaningfully. Return to the index when a new question arises. A learner who can explain a few distinctions clearly has a stronger starting point than one who can recite a much longer list without context.
Is this a guaranteed sightseeing itinerary?
No. It is a vocabulary and learning guide. The place entries can help you prepare questions and read descriptions, while official visitor information should settle actual access, schedules and ticket conditions. The dated context above records what was checked for this edition; it is not a reservation or a guarantee about your travel date.
Are all the scientific and musical terms unique to Siena?
No. The guide deliberately moves from real local connections to broader subject learning. Entries label those extensions. Use the specialist terms to ask better questions, and do not turn their inclusion here into a claim about a local collection, a plant specimen, the city’s underground geology or a scheduled performance.
Why include Chinese and pinyin?
The glosses offer a meaning bridge for bilingual learners. Read the English sentence as a whole before translating it, then compare the Chinese version for meaning. Pinyin accompanies the Chinese headword gloss; the separate Say it line is for the English or local-language expression. The two pronunciation aids have different jobs.
How should I use unfamiliar Italian and musical words in an English essay?
Introduce the term with a short explanation when your reader is unlikely to know it. Keep the spelling consistent and use it because it adds precision. After defining a term, give an example or comparison that shows why it matters. Avoid placing several unexplained specialist words in a sentence merely to make it sound sophisticated.
Can these exercises be completed without travelling?
Yes. Work with an official map, a museum catalogue entry, a labelled reference diagram or an educational recording. Make the source and the situation clear. Write an imagined visit as an imagined visit, and describe a photograph as a photograph. That honesty makes remote study more useful, not less valuable.
Sources and vocabulary references
Research checked 4 October 2026. Official city, museum, university and music-institution sources support the local context and dated visitor information. Museum terminology, scientific teaching resources, performer-authored explanations and dictionaries support the selected technical senses. Definitions, examples, translations and learning tasks are newly written. Each entry and source-dependent context paragraph links to its supporting reference; references to collections do not promise that a particular object is currently on display.
