Top 100 Vocabulary for Visiting and Touring EU | Würzburg

English language books, an open exercise book, notes and a pen are arranged on a study desk beside the window.

A useful travel vocabulary list should help you notice, ask and explain. This Würzburg guide gives students, families and curious visitors 100 carefully defined words and names, with Chinese meanings, pinyin, readable pronunciation cues and original examples. Choose a route that matches your interest; you do not need to master every scientific term before enjoying a city visit.

The first twenty entries establish places and people. The later chapters develop four learning routes: radiation physics, plant physiology, ant societies and basketball. These are educational extensions from documented city connections, not claims that every concept originated here or appears in an attraction’s displays. Use the place chapters for orientation and the subject chapters for deeper reading.

For each entry, read the meaning, say the term, and explain why it fits the example. Then hide the definition and create a different sentence. The Chinese supports understanding; it does not replace the need to make a clear English statement. The pronunciation cues are approximations for English readers, and German rounded vowels may need listening practice.

Find related learning routes in the Vocabulary Lists Control Tower.

Choose your reading route

Plan an observant visit

Use place names and careful questions to plan a visit with a clear purpose.

Read a science explanation

Follow the physics route or continue into plant growth and transport, using diagrams and precise distinctions.

Explore ant societies

Describe roles and interactions while keeping observation separate from interpretation.

Write about basketball

Practise sequence, direction and outcome, then learn how to ask a careful question about the rules.

Before the words: Würzburg connections

A city, several starting points

Würzburg stands beside the Main in Bavaria. Its Residence, fortress and old bridge offer distinct starting points for a historical visit.

Reference: German National Tourist Board

Connect a place with a question

Röntgen discovered X-rays in Würzburg in 1895. Sachs’s work there helped establish plant physiology; Hölldobler’s Würzburg career connects the city with ant research.

Reference: Röntgen Memorial Würzburg · University of Würzburg · University of Würzburg

Würzburg-born Dirk Nowitzki provides a documented connection with basketball and an accessible starting point for describing movement and decisions in sport.

Reference: Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame

Plan access separately

Visitor conditions checked on 4 October 2026: the Röntgen Memorial’s official page says its lift is available only during guided group tours. Check with the venue before planning a step-free visit.

Reference: Röntgen Memorial Würzburg

A historical description is not a booking confirmation. Before travelling, check the official page for the exact destination, date, opening arrangements, accessible route and any tour requirement. Keep a realistic alternative if the visit does not fit your group’s needs. This guide deliberately avoids promising that every room or path will be available.

Read the harder histories carefully

The Juliusspital foundation acknowledges that its early hospital was built on a Jewish cemetery despite objections. Its historical account deserves careful, contextual reading.

Reference: Juliusspital Foundation

When a place has both an admired contribution and a difficult history, allow both to remain visible. Ask whose account you are reading and what evidence supports it. You can write a respectful paragraph that acknowledges complexity without turning a short vocabulary exercise into a verdict on everything that happened.

1. Places to identify accurately

Entries 1–10. Back to contents

Start with ten names that help a visitor locate a subject. The aim is not to collect landmarks as quickly as possible. Choose one name, one observation you can support and one question that would make a visit more meaningful.

1. Würzburg

Say it: VUERTS-boork; round the lips for German ü

中文: 维尔茨堡 · wéi ěr cí bǎo

Meaning: A city on the River Main in the German region of Franconia, in Bavaria.

Example: Our Würzburg notebook begins with a question: what could we learn from one place in greater detail?

中文例句: 我们的维尔茨堡笔记本从一个问题开始:深入了解一个地方,能让我们学到什么?

Use it well: Use the city name to establish the setting before naming a smaller destination. Keep the umlaut in careful writing; Wuerzburg is a useful spelling substitute. A strong opening sentence identifies your purpose as well as your location, so revise a vague statement such as “We went there” into something a reader can picture.

Word reference: German National Tourist Board

2. Würzburg Residence

Say it: VUERTS-boork REZ-i-dens

中文: 维尔茨堡宫 · wéi ěr cí bǎo gōng

Meaning: The former palace of Würzburg’s prince-bishops, recognised as part of a UNESCO World Heritage property.

Example: Before visiting Würzburg Residence, Mei chose one room-related question for her travel journal.

中文例句: 参观维尔茨堡宫之前,美为旅行日记选定了一个与房间有关的问题。

Use it well: The proper name identifies a particular palace; residence alone can mean somebody’s home. Make your observation manageable: choose an arrangement, a colour relationship or a feature you can describe precisely. Record what you actually see, and keep historical explanations separate until you have checked the relevant label or official guide.

Word reference: Bavarian Palace Administration

3. Marienberg Fortress

Say it: mah-REE-en-berk FOR-tris

中文: 玛利恩堡要塞 · mǎ lì ēn bǎo yào sài

Meaning: The historic fortress complex on the Marienberg hill above Würzburg.

Example: “Let us check the current visitor information for Marienberg Fortress before we plan the afternoon,” Dad suggested.

中文例句: “规划下午的行程之前,我们先查一下玛利恩堡要塞的最新参观信息吧,”爸爸建议道。

Use it well: A destination name does not tell you which rooms, paths or tours are available on your date. Practise the difference between intention and confirmation: “We hope to visit” expresses a plan; “Our booking confirms” requires actual evidence. This distinction makes travel writing more useful and prevents an attractive description from becoming an unsupported access promise.

Word reference: Bavarian Palace Administration

4. Alte Mainbrücke

Say it: AL-tuh MYN-bruek-uh; ü is rounded

中文: 美因河老桥 · měi yīn hé lǎo qiáo

Meaning: Würzburg’s historic bridge across the Main, distinguished by its statues.

Example: We paused near the Alte Mainbrücke to decide which detail belonged in the first paragraph.

中文例句: 我们在美因河老桥附近停下,决定把哪个细节写进第一段。

Use it well: Retain the full German name when referring to this specific bridge. Main is the river’s name here, not the English adjective meaning most important. Try a sentence that moves from a broad view to one small observation. A reader should be able to follow your attention without needing every detail of the scene at once.

Word reference: City of Würzburg

5. Käppele

Say it: KEP-uh-luh

中文: 卡佩勒朝圣教堂 · kǎ pèi lè cháo shèng jiào táng

Meaning: The pilgrimage church above Würzburg associated with the architect Balthasar Neumann.

Example: For her Käppele paragraph, Lin prepared a respectful question about the building’s religious purpose.

中文例句: 为了写关于卡佩勒朝圣教堂的段落,琳准备了一个有关建筑宗教用途的礼貌问题。

Use it well: A place of worship can be both a visitor destination and a setting for religious practice. Phrase a request gently, such as “Would this be an appropriate time to look around?” Before writing about another person’s belief, distinguish your own observation from what the community or an authoritative source actually says.

Word reference: City of Würzburg

6. Falkenhaus

Say it: FAL-ken-hows

中文: 猎鹰之屋 · liè yīng zhī wū

Meaning: The building at Würzburg’s market square known for its elaborate Rococo façade.

Example: The Falkenhaus gave Arun a reason to replace “nice building” with a more exact description.

中文例句: 猎鹰之屋让阿伦有理由用更准确的描述替换“好看的建筑”。

Use it well: A façade is the outward face of a building; observing it does not establish what lies inside. In your description, choose one visible feature and explain its relationship to another. Resist filling a paragraph with praise words when a clear comparison of shape, placement or repetition would tell the reader much more.

Word reference: City of Würzburg

7. Museum für Franken

Say it: moo-ZAY-oom fuer FRANK-en; ü is rounded

中文: 弗兰肯博物馆 · fú lán kěn bó wù guǎn

Meaning: A Würzburg museum whose collections explore Franconian art and cultural history.

Example: At the Museum für Franken, our imaginary student group plans to study one object carefully rather than rush through a list.

中文例句: 在弗兰肯博物馆,我们设想的学生小组打算仔细研究一件物品,而不是匆忙完成清单。

Use it well: The name means Museum for Franconia. Write the object’s recorded maker, material and date only after reading its label. If a label is uncertain, retain that uncertainty in your sentence. “Attributed to” and “made by” are different claims, so a careful visitor does not silently turn the first into the second.

Word reference: Museum für Franken

8. Röntgen Memorial Site

Say it: RUHNT-gen muh-MOR-ee-ul syt; German ö is rounded

中文: 伦琴纪念馆 · lún qín jì niàn guǎn

Meaning: The memorial in Würzburg’s former physics institute where Röntgen discovered X-rays in 1895.

Example: A question about the Röntgen Memorial Site led us to separate a discovery’s location from its later applications.

中文例句: 一个关于伦琴纪念馆的问题促使我们区分发现发生的地点与后来的应用。

Use it well: Use the full name on first mention, then memorial if the reference stays clear. This guide’s physics chapters are educational extensions; they are not an inventory of exhibits. A useful museum question asks what the displayed evidence establishes, then identifies something that would require a different source or a later stage of research.

Word reference: Röntgen Memorial Würzburg

9. Juliusspital

Say it: YOO-lee-oos-shpee-tahl

中文: 尤利乌斯医院及基金会 · yóu lì wū sī yī yuàn jí jī jīn huì

Meaning: The historic Würzburg charitable institution established by Julius Echter to care for people in need.

Example: Our Juliusspital reading task asks us to examine both a foundation’s stated purpose and the history of its site.

中文例句: 我们的尤利乌斯医院及基金会阅读任务要求我们考察基金会的宗旨和所在地的历史。

Use it well: Institutional histories deserve attentive reading rather than automatic celebration. Ask who benefited, which voices appear, and which questions remain. A balanced paragraph can acknowledge charitable aims while discussing difficult evidence respectfully. Do not turn an organisation’s account of its past into a claim about present services without checking current information.

Word reference: Juliusspital Foundation

10. Würzburger Stein

Say it: VUERTS-boor-ger SHTYN

中文: 维尔茨堡施泰因葡萄园 · wéi ěr cí bǎo shī tài yīn pú táo yuán

Meaning: A named vineyard site north of Würzburg’s old town, overlooking the Main landscape.

Example: “What does the name Würzburger Stein identify on this map?” asked the teacher.

中文例句: “维尔茨堡施泰因葡萄园这个名称在地图上标示的是什么?”老师问。

Use it well: Learn the name as a geographical reference, rather than translating Stein into a generic English rock. A vineyard can prompt questions about land use, plant growth and how a landscape is described. Young learners can study these connections through maps and plant science without needing an alcohol-related activity.

Word reference: City of Würzburg

Put the distinction to work

Choose two destinations and write a small planning note. Give each a purpose, such as studying a building detail or reading a historical display, then list the information you would still need before going. Keep access questions separate from descriptive sentences. End with a calm alternative: what could you read, sketch or discuss if the visit is unavailable?

2. People, roles and contributions

Entries 11–20. Back to contents

A name becomes useful vocabulary when it connects a person with a precise contribution. Notice how studied, designed, painted, researched and discovered ask different questions. Do not let an award or a famous surname replace an accurate explanation of what somebody did.

11. Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen

Say it: VIL-helm KON-raht RUHNT-gen

中文: 威廉·康拉德·伦琴 · wēi lián kāng lā dé lún qín

Meaning: The physicist who discovered X-rays in Würzburg in 1895 and received the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.

Example: I linked Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen to one verified discovery before adding questions about the physics.

中文例句: 我先把威廉·康拉德·伦琴与一项经过核实的发现联系起来,再补充物理方面的问题。

Use it well: Distinguish discovery, explanation and application when writing a scientist’s biography. They can involve different people and different dates. A concise profile needs an accurate contribution more than a string of superlatives. After introducing the full name, use the surname consistently and check whether any later technical concept was actually part of that person’s work.

Word reference: Röntgen Memorial Würzburg

12. Balthasar Neumann

Say it: BAL-ta-zar NOY-man

中文: 巴尔塔萨·诺伊曼 · bā ěr tǎ sà nuò yī màn

Meaning: The Baroque architect closely associated with the design of Würzburg Residence.

Example: A caption naming Balthasar Neumann helped me ask who designed the space rather than who painted it.

中文例句: 一则写着巴尔塔萨·诺伊曼名字的说明,帮助我询问空间由谁设计,而不是由谁绘画。

Use it well: Use a role verb that matches the evidence: designed, commissioned, painted and restored describe different contributions. Buildings often involve several participants. Practise a two-sentence account that names one documented role and then asks about another, rather than assigning every visible feature to the best-known person.

Word reference: Deutsche Biographie · Bavarian Palace Administration

13. Giovanni Battista Tiepolo

Say it: joh-VAH-nee ba-TEES-ta tee-EH-po-lo

中文: 乔瓦尼·巴蒂斯塔·提埃坡罗 · qiáo wǎ ní bā dì sī tǎ tí āi pō luó

Meaning: The Venetian painter responsible for celebrated ceiling frescoes at Würzburg Residence.

Example: When I read Giovanni Battista Tiepolo on the label, I checked which painting the name referred to.

中文例句: 当我在说明牌上读到乔瓦尼·巴蒂斯塔·提埃坡罗时,我核对了这个名字指的是哪幅画。

Use it well: A famous artist’s name is not a substitute for identifying a particular work. In an art paragraph, move from maker to work to a detail you can justify. If you describe your response, mark it as yours: “I found the arrangement dramatic” is more honest than presenting your reaction as an undisputed fact.

Word reference: Deutsche Biographie · Bavarian Palace Administration

14. Tilman Riemenschneider

Say it: TIL-man REE-men-shny-der

中文: 蒂尔曼·里门施奈德 · dì ěr màn lǐ mén shī nài dé

Meaning: The late-Gothic sculptor who ran a major workshop in Würzburg from 1485 to 1531.

Example: We used Tilman Riemenschneider as the starting point for a question about an artist and a workshop.

中文例句: 我们以蒂尔曼·里门施奈德为起点,提出了一个有关艺术家与作坊的问题。

Use it well: Keep authorship precise when an object is connected with a workshop or wider circle. The name of a master does not automatically prove that every part was made by that person alone. Copy the attribution carefully into your notes, then explain in your own words how certain or qualified the museum’s statement is.

Word reference: Museum für Franken

15. Julius von Sachs

Say it: YOO-lee-oos fon ZAKS

中文: 尤利乌斯·冯·萨克斯 · yóu lì wū sī féng sà kè sī

Meaning: The botanist who worked in Würzburg from 1868 and helped establish modern plant physiology.

Example: Reading about Julius von Sachs made me want to explain a plant process rather than merely name a flower.

中文例句: 阅读尤利乌斯·冯·萨克斯的事迹,使我想解释植物的一个过程,而不只是说出花的名字。

Use it well: A historical connection can open a modern learning route without implying that one scientist discovered every later concept. Use “inspired our question about” when that is the relationship you mean. In a short science biography, distinguish the person’s documented work from a classroom investigation you have designed yourself.

Word reference: University of Würzburg

16. Bert Hölldobler

Say it: bert HUHL-duh-bler; German ö is rounded

中文: 贝尔特·霍尔多布勒 · bèi ěr tè huò ěr duō bù lè

Meaning: The ant researcher who studied at Würzburg and later held its chair of behavioural physiology and sociobiology.

Example: Bert Hölldobler became the link between our city reading and a new set of questions about ant societies.

中文例句: 贝尔特·霍尔多布勒成为我们阅读城市资料与提出蚂蚁社会新问题之间的纽带。

Use it well: A researcher’s institutional connection is a reason to explore a subject, not proof that every example occurred in that city. When reading animal behaviour, name the species if the source does. Try replacing a broad “Ants always” sentence with a narrower statement that preserves the actual limits of the evidence.

Word reference: University of Würzburg

17. Dirk Nowitzki

Say it: dirk noh-VIT-skee

中文: 德克·诺维茨基 · dé kè nuò wéi cí jī

Meaning: The Würzburg-born basketball player who spent his NBA career with the Dallas Mavericks and entered the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.

Example: A profile of Dirk Nowitzki encouraged Sam to write a clearer description of a basketball movement.

中文例句: 一篇德克·诺维茨基的简介鼓励山姆更清楚地描述篮球动作。

Use it well: Separate a person’s career achievements from your own practice goal. A sports biography can explain a movement, a decision or a period of development without promising that copying a famous player will produce the same result. Use the past tense for completed career events and verify dates before adding them.

Word reference: Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame

18. Rudolf Virchow

Say it: ROO-dolf FEER-khoh; ch is a soft German sound

中文: 鲁道夫·菲尔肖 · lǔ dào fū fēi ěr xiào

Meaning: The physician whose Würzburg work was central to the development of cellular pathology.

Example: Our Rudolf Virchow paragraph focuses on a historical idea and the evidence needed to explain it accurately.

中文例句: 我们关于鲁道夫·菲尔肖的段落,聚焦于一个历史观念及准确解释它所需的证据。

Use it well: Historical medical vocabulary belongs here as a reading subject, not a way to diagnose symptoms. Identify the period and the question under discussion. A statement that an idea was influential is different from a claim that it contains everything modern researchers know; leave room for later discoveries and revisions.

Word reference: University of Würzburg

19. Wilhelm Wien

Say it: VIL-helm veen

中文: 威廉·维恩 · wēi lián wéi ēn

Meaning: The physicist who succeeded Röntgen in Würzburg and received the 1911 Nobel Prize in Physics for work on heat radiation.

Example: I placed Wilhelm Wien on the timeline and checked the contribution attached to his name.

中文例句: 我把威廉·维恩放入时间轴,并核对了与他名字相关的贡献。

Use it well: Wien here is a surname, although the same spelling is the German name for Vienna. Context tells you which meaning applies. When comparing two scientists, choose one shared question and one genuine difference. Simply listing prizes does less explanatory work than showing what each person investigated.

Word reference: University of Würzburg

20. Walther Nernst

Say it: VAL-ter nehrnst

中文: 瓦尔特·能斯特 · wǎ ěr tè néng sī tè

Meaning: The scientist who completed his doctorate in Würzburg in 1887 and later received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Example: For Walther Nernst, our research card separates his Würzburg doctorate from later stages of his career.

中文例句: 在瓦尔特·能斯特的研究卡上,我们把他在维尔茨堡取得博士学位的经历与后来的职业阶段分开。

Use it well: A city connection may be a period of study rather than a lifetime residence. Choose the verb carefully: studied, taught and visited cannot be exchanged freely. Build a brief chronology from verified milestones, and do not assume that a later award recognises the exact work completed in the city you are describing.

Word reference: University of Würzburg

Put the distinction to work

Build a three-column note on paper: person, verified contribution, question still open. Now turn one row into two connected sentences. The first should make a modest factual claim supported by a source; the second should identify a question for further reading. Remove any sentence that assigns a discovery or artwork merely because the name seems familiar.

3. Read the language of particles and tubes

Entries 21–30. Back to contents

These entries are a reading route into physics. Begin with the parts named in a diagram, then ask what moves, what changes and what can be observed. The learning task is to interpret a published explanation, not to operate equipment or recreate historical experiments.

21. electron

Say it: ih-LEK-tron

中文: 电子 · diàn zǐ

Meaning: An elementary particle with a negative electric charge.

Example: The diagram labels an electron separately from the light it may help produce.

中文例句: 图中把电子与它可能帮助产生的光分别标示出来。

Use it well: Treat the word as a countable noun: an electron, two electrons. Do not use it as a loose synonym for electricity. In a diagram explanation, identify what each symbol represents before describing any movement. This gives your reader a way to follow the argument instead of guessing whether a dot means a particle, a location or a measurement.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

22. cathode

Say it: KATH-ohd

中文: 阴极 · yīn jí

Meaning: In an electron tube, the electrode from which electrons are emitted.

Example: “Which label marks the cathode in this tube diagram?” asked Jun.

中文例句: “这张电子管示意图中,哪个标签标出了阴极?”俊问。

Use it well: State the device context because electrode names are not universal shortcuts for a positive or negative terminal in every system. Here the electron-tube sense matters. Practise describing a diagram with a location phrase and a function phrase, then check that neither phrase quietly contradicts the source.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

23. anode

Say it: AN-ohd

中文: 阳极 · yáng jí

Meaning: In an electron tube, the electrode that collects electrons.

Example: Maya traced the arrow towards the anode and asked what the arrow represented.

中文例句: 玛雅沿着指向阳极的箭头查看,并询问箭头代表什么。

Use it well: Read this alongside cathode, keeping both words in the same device context. An accurate comparison states each role instead of relying on a memorised colour convention. If your diagram uses red and blue, include a key; colours chosen for a classroom illustration are not themselves evidence about the physics.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

24. vacuum tube

Say it: VAK-yoom tyoob

中文: 真空管 · zhēn kōng guǎn

Meaning: An electronic device in which electrons move between electrodes inside an evacuated enclosure.

Example: The class described the vacuum tube from a labelled drawing rather than attempting to build one.

中文例句: 全班根据一张有标签的图描述真空管,而没有尝试制作它。

Use it well: Use a diagram or a museum explanation for this learning task. Recognising a device’s name does not qualify a visitor to operate historical or high-voltage equipment. In your writing, distinguish a description of components from instructions for using them; the first is the purpose of this vocabulary entry.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

25. ionisation

Say it: eye-uh-ny-ZAY-shun

中文: 电离 · diàn lí

Meaning: The formation of ions when atoms or molecules gain or lose electrons.

Example: Our revision card explains ionisation with a before-and-after sketch of electric charge.

中文例句: 我们的复习卡用电荷变化前后的示意图解释电离。

Use it well: British English commonly uses ionisation; ionization is the American spelling. They name the same process. Check what changes in your explanation and what stays the same, rather than treating any energetic event as ionisation. Keep this a conceptual reading exercise, with no attempt to generate radiation or assess personal exposure.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

26. cathodoluminescence

Say it: kath-oh-doh-loo-mih-NES-ens

中文: 阴极射线发光 · yīn jí shè xiàn fā guāng

Meaning: Light emission from a material excited by an electron beam.

Example: The label cathodoluminescence tells us to ask what the electron beam does to the material.

中文例句: 阴极射线发光这个标签提醒我们询问电子束对材料产生了什么作用。

Use it well: The distinguishing feature is the electron-beam excitation, not simply the presence of a glow. This is a specific mechanism within the broader subject of luminescence. In an explanation, put the cause before the observed effect, and avoid assuming that every glowing object has been excited in the same way.

Word reference: National Institute of Standards and Technology

27. phosphorescence

Say it: fos-fuh-RES-ens

中文: 磷光 · lín guāng

Meaning: Light emission that continues after the source of excitation has been removed.

Example: In the teaching example, phosphorescence explains why the glow remains after the lamp is switched off.

中文例句: 在教学例子中,磷光解释了为什么关灯后仍然发光。

Use it well: The persistence of emission is central to this sense. Do not replace the word with fluorescence as though the two were interchangeable. A useful comparison names the feature that separates two related processes. For your paragraph, describe the sequence of events clearly before adding a technical label to it.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

28. electronvolt

Say it: ih-LEK-tron-vohlt

中文: 电子伏特 · diàn zǐ fú tè

Meaning: An energy unit equal to the energy gained by one electron moving through a potential difference of one volt.

Example: “Does this electronvolt value describe energy?” asked the student before reading the graph.

中文例句: “这个电子伏特数值描述的是能量吗?”学生在读图前问。

Use it well: The name contains volt, but the whole word identifies an energy unit. Write the unit beside a number and explain what the number measures. Learning to question an axis label is more useful than memorising an isolated value. Do not compare two numbers until their units and meanings are compatible.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

29. bremsstrahlung

Say it: BREMS-shtrah-loong

中文: 轫致辐射 · rèn zhì fú shè

Meaning: Electromagnetic radiation produced when a charged particle is decelerated or deflected in an electric field.

Example: We explained bremsstrahlung with a conceptual drawing of a particle changing its motion.

中文例句: 我们用粒子运动发生变化的概念图解释轫致辐射。

Use it well: The German-derived term is often glossed as braking radiation. Keep the explanation focused on a change in motion rather than suggesting that radiation is a substance scraped off a particle. Try a cause-and-effect sentence, then identify which part is a model and which part states the physical process.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

30. photoelectric effect

Say it: foh-toh-ih-LEK-trik ih-FEKT

中文: 光电效应 · guāng diàn xiào yìng

Meaning: The emission of electrons from a material when incoming light transfers sufficient energy to them.

Example: The photoelectric effect gave our group a reason to distinguish incoming light from emitted electrons.

中文例句: 光电效应使我们有理由区分入射光与逸出的电子。

Use it well: Avoid a vague sentence saying that light “turns into electricity.” Name what arrives and what is emitted. This entry develops a physics-reading question prompted by the city’s scientific history; it does not claim that this particular effect was discovered in Würzburg or demonstrated during a visitor tour.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

Put the distinction to work

Choose two entries and write a comparison that uses the same frame for each: what it names, what its role is, and what it should not be confused with. Read the comparison aloud to a partner. If the partner cannot tell which word belongs to which role, improve the distinguishing sentence before adding more technical detail.

4. Follow radiation, interaction and measurement

Entries 31–40. Back to contents

Technical language becomes easier when the type of thing being named is clear. Is the entry a process, a material, a mathematical relationship or a measured quantity? Make that first decision before studying the longer definition. It prevents a quantity from being mistaken for a physical component.

31. Compton scattering

Say it: KOMP-tun SKAT-er-ing

中文: 康普顿散射 · kāng pǔ dùn sǎn shè

Meaning: Scattering in which a photon transfers energy to an electron and emerges with a longer wavelength.

Example: Our caption for Compton scattering follows the incoming photon and the outgoing photon separately.

中文例句: 我们关于康普顿散射的图注分别追踪入射光子和出射光子。

Use it well: The word scattering concerns a changed path, while this named interaction also involves energy transfer. A good caption states both features without confusing the two. When using arrows, tell the reader which quantity each arrow shows; direction, energy and wavelength should not be silently represented by the same mark.

Word reference: Collins Dictionary

32. characteristic radiation

Say it: kar-ik-tuh-RIS-tik ray-dee-AY-shun

中文: 特征辐射 · tè zhēng fú shè

Meaning: Electromagnetic radiation emitted at element-specific energies when bound electrons move to lower-energy states.

Example: The phrase characteristic radiation helped us ask why the graph contained distinct lines.

中文例句: 特征辐射这个短语帮助我们询问为什么图中会出现分立的谱线。

Use it well: Here characteristic is technical: the energies are connected with the emitting element. It does not merely mean typical or familiar. Practise unpacking an adjective that changes a scientific noun’s meaning. Your explanation should show the relationship between the two words rather than define each one in isolation.

Word reference: University of Groningen

33. absorption edge

Say it: ab-ZORP-shun ej

中文: 吸收边 · xī shōu biān

Meaning: A sharp rise in X-ray absorption at the energy needed to release a strongly bound electron.

Example: I marked the absorption edge on the graph instead of drawing an edge around the sample.

中文例句: 我在图上标出吸收边,而没有沿样品外缘画线。

Use it well: Edge here names a feature of an energy-dependent absorption pattern, not a physical border you can touch. State what the horizontal and vertical axes measure before interpreting a change. This habit prevents an everyday picture suggested by a familiar word from replacing its precise scientific meaning.

Word reference: IUPAC Gold Book

34. scintillator

Say it: SIN-tih-lay-ter

中文: 闪烁体 · shǎn shuò tǐ

Meaning: A radiation-sensitive material that gives off light when excited by ionising radiation.

Example: The diagram shows a scintillator as one part of a detection system.

中文例句: 图中把闪烁体显示为探测系统的一部分。

Use it well: A material and the complete instrument containing it are different levels of description. Keep the noun attached to the correct component. For a classroom analogy, name one part of an everyday device and describe its limited job; then return to the scientific diagram without assuming the analogy explains every detail.

Word reference: CERN research repository

35. dosimetry

Say it: doh-SIM-uh-tree

中文: 剂量测定 · jì liàng cè dìng

Meaning: The measurement or estimation of radiation dose.

Example: The visitor asked what dosimetry measures, rather than guessing a dose from a photograph.

中文例句: 参观者询问剂量测定测量什么,而没有根据照片猜测剂量。

Use it well: Use this word to understand a text, not to make a personal medical or radiation-safety judgement. A meaningful measurement needs a defined quantity and suitable method. In your summary, identify what information the source supplies and what it leaves unspecified instead of presenting an unsupported numerical conclusion.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

36. beam hardening

Say it: beem HAR-den-ing

中文: 射束硬化 · shè shù yìng huà

Meaning: An increase in an X-ray beam’s average energy as lower-energy photons are preferentially removed during passage through material.

Example: The reading exercise asks how beam hardening changes a spectrum, not whether a beam becomes physically solid.

中文例句: 这项阅读练习询问射束硬化如何改变能谱,而不是射束是否变成实体。

Use it well: Hardening is a technical description of the beam’s changing energy distribution. Keep that meaning separate from everyday hardness. When explaining the process, identify which photons are removed more readily and what remains; a clear account of selection is more informative than saying the beam simply gets stronger.

37. half-value layer

Say it: haf-VAL-yoo LAY-er

中文: 半值层 · bàn zhí céng

Meaning: The thickness of a specified absorber that reduces a specified radiation-beam quantity to half its original value under stated conditions.

Example: Our worksheet leaves space to identify the material and conditions beside half-value layer.

中文例句: 我们的练习纸在半值层旁留出位置,用来注明材料和条件。

Use it well: This is a thickness, not the time taken for radioactivity to decrease. Do not confuse it with half-life. A technical comparison must retain the material, beam and measurement conditions; otherwise two values may look comparable while answering different questions. Use the term for reading data, not designing protection.

Word reference: IUPAC Gold Book

38. inverse-square law

Say it: in-VERS skwair law

中文: 平方反比定律 · píng fāng fǎn bǐ dìng lǜ

Meaning: A relationship in which a quantity is proportional to one divided by the square of distance.

Example: The teacher asked which assumptions made the inverse-square law suitable for the model.

中文例句: 老师询问哪些假设使平方反比定律适用于这个模型。

Use it well: Under this relationship, doubling distance reduces the quantity to one quarter. State the model’s conditions before transferring that result to a real situation. A mathematical relationship is not a universal shortcut: write the quantity, the distance and the assumptions, then explain whether your example satisfies them.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

39. wave-particle duality

Say it: wayv PAR-ti-kuhl dyoo-AL-i-tee

中文: 波粒二象性 · bō lì èr xiàng xìng

Meaning: The need for both wave-like and particle-like descriptions to account for observed quantum behaviour.

Example: We used wave-particle duality to discuss why one everyday picture cannot explain every result.

中文例句: 我们用波粒二象性讨论为什么一种日常图像无法解释所有结果。

Use it well: The term does not mean a tiny object chooses to become an ordinary water wave and then an ordinary pebble. Keep the language tied to observed behaviour and the model used to describe it. A strong explanation can acknowledge the limits of an analogy without pretending that the underlying subject is meaningless.

Word reference: OpenStax

40. mass attenuation coefficient

Say it: mas uh-ten-yoo-AY-shun koh-ih-FISH-ent

中文: 质量衰减系数 · zhì liàng shuāi jiǎn xì shù

Meaning: The linear attenuation coefficient of a radiation beam divided by the material’s density.

Example: I checked the units of the mass attenuation coefficient before comparing the two materials.

中文例句: 比较两种材料之前,我核对了质量衰减系数的单位。

Use it well: This quantity normalises attenuation by density; it is more specific than a general decrease in signal strength. The photon energy must also be identified when comparing tabulated values. In your written explanation, preserve the complete term, since dropping mass changes the quantity being named.

Word reference: National Institute of Standards and Technology

Put the distinction to work

Select a graph from an educational source and write a caption without inventing numbers. Identify the labelled quantities, units and conditions. Then choose one term from this chapter that genuinely helps explain the graph. If none fits, say so and choose a different example. Accurate restraint is part of good vocabulary use, especially when a scientific word sounds impressive.

5. Ask how plant growth is regulated

Entries 41–50. Back to contents

This chapter moves from naming a plant to describing a process. Keep your explanations tied to a particular response or structure. A useful sentence is narrow enough to check; a sweeping claim about what makes all plants grow well usually hides more questions than it answers.

41. auxin

Say it: AWK-sin

中文: 生长素 · shēng zhǎng sù

Meaning: A class of plant growth regulators that influence processes including cell elongation and root initiation.

Example: The student added auxin to the diagram only after explaining which growth process she meant.

中文例句: 学生先解释了所指的生长过程,然后才把生长素加到图中。

Use it well: Avoid treating a hormone’s name as an explanation by itself. Say which tissue, response or question your sentence concerns. “Auxin affects growth” is a starting point, but a more useful reading note asks what was measured and under what conditions. This vocabulary task does not prescribe chemical treatments for plants.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

42. gibberellin

Say it: jib-uh-REL-in

中文: 赤霉素 · chì méi sù

Meaning: One of a group of plant hormones that regulate growth, including the elongation of plant cells.

Example: Our group looked for the role of gibberellin in the passage before writing a summary.

中文例句: 小组先在文章中查找赤霉素的作用,然后才写摘要。

Use it well: The singular names one member or a hormone discussed in context; gibberellins refers to the group. Do not replace a specific growth response with a vague claim that a substance makes a plant better. In a comparison paragraph, use the same type of outcome for each item you compare.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

43. cytokinin

Say it: sy-toh-KY-nin

中文: 细胞分裂素 · xì bāo fēn liè sù

Meaning: A plant hormone involved in cell division and the regulation of plant development.

Example: “Where does cytokinin appear in the explanation of cell division?” asked Mei.

中文例句: “细胞分裂素在解释细胞分裂的哪个部分出现?”美问。

Use it well: The similar-looking word cytokine belongs to a different biological context, so check the entire spelling. A careful learner connects the name with a defined process and then checks the surrounding sentence. When summarising, preserve qualifications instead of suggesting that a single chemical controls every part of a plant’s development.

Word reference: OpenStax

44. abscisic acid

Say it: ab-SIS-ik AS-id

中文: 脱落酸 · tuō luò suān

Meaning: A plant hormone, often abbreviated ABA, involved in responses such as stomatal closure during drought stress.

Example: Our drought-response diagram uses abscisic acid as one signal in a sequence.

中文例句: 我们的干旱应答示意图把脱落酸作为一连串过程中的一个信号。

Use it well: Introduce the full name before using ABA. Trace the response in stages rather than attributing human intentions to a plant. “The plant decides to save water” may be a memorable shorthand, but a science explanation should identify the signal and the observed response instead of leaving the personification unexamined.

Word reference: University of Würzburg

45. ethylene

Say it: ETH-uh-leen

中文: 乙烯 · yǐ xī

Meaning: A gaseous plant hormone that helps regulate processes including fruit ripening.

Example: The reading passage prompted a question about ethylene and the timing of ripening.

中文例句: 这篇阅读文章引出了一个关于乙烯与成熟时间的问题。

Use it well: Recognise that a hormone can be a gas; the word hormone does not require a liquid form. When writing about ripening, separate a named process from a broad judgement such as fresh or spoiled. For this activity, explain a supplied diagram or text rather than experimenting with gases or chemical treatments.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

46. apical dominance

Say it: AY-pi-kuhl DOM-i-nens

中文: 顶端优势 · dǐng duān yōu shì

Meaning: Suppression of lateral-bud growth by the growing tip of a shoot.

Example: The sketch of apical dominance identifies the shoot tip and the side buds separately.

中文例句: 顶端优势示意图分别标出了茎尖和侧芽。

Use it well: Dominance here describes a growth relationship, not a plant’s strength or value. A precise explanation identifies the parts involved and the direction of the effect. Try rewriting a loose sentence about a “strong top” so it states which buds are affected, without adding an unsupported account of every hormone involved.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

47. stratification

Say it: strat-i-fi-KAY-shun

中文: 种子层积处理 · zhǒng zǐ céng jī chǔ lǐ

Meaning: In seed propagation, controlled moist-temperature treatment used to help overcome seed dormancy.

Example: The seed packet’s reference to stratification made us look for species-specific instructions.

中文例句: 种子包装上提到的种子层积处理,使我们去寻找适用于该物种的说明。

Use it well: This entry uses the seed-treatment sense, not the layering of warm and cold water or social groups. Requirements vary, so the word alone does not supply a universal temperature or duration. In your learning note, state the sense first, then identify which additional information a practical instruction would need.

Word reference: University of Minnesota Extension

48. plasmodesma

Say it: plaz-moh-DEZ-muh

中文: 胞间连丝 · bāo jiān lián sī

Meaning: A microscopic connection through a plant cell wall that links the cytoplasm of neighbouring cells.

Example: The student labelled one plasmodesma and then checked the plural form.

中文例句: 学生标出一条胞间连丝,然后核对了它的复数形式。

Use it well: The usual plural is plasmodesmata. Do not confuse a connection between cells with an entire cell or a large visible channel in a stem. In a labelled drawing, describe the scale and the connected parts. This makes the diagram a useful explanation rather than a collection of unfamiliar names.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

49. pulvinus

Say it: pul-VY-nus

中文: 叶枕 · yè zhěn

Meaning: A swollen region at the base of a leaf stalk or leaflet stalk.

Example: Our plant sketch marks the pulvinus at the base of the stalk.

中文例句: 我们的植物图在叶柄基部标出了叶枕。

Use it well: The plural is pulvini. Begin with the structure’s location before asking about its role in a particular plant. Avoid identifying every swelling as a pulvinus merely because the outline looks similar. A useful caption explains how the label relates to the rest of the drawing and notes what information is still needed.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

50. nastic movement

Say it: NAS-tik MOOV-ment

中文: 感性运动 · gǎn xìng yùn dòng

Meaning: A plant movement whose direction is determined by the organ’s structure rather than by the direction of the stimulus.

Example: We compared nastic movement with a response that follows the direction of incoming light.

中文例句: 我们把感性运动与沿入射光方向发生的反应进行比较。

Use it well: The key question is how movement direction relates to stimulus direction. Do not assume that every movement towards something is nastic. When comparing two responses, keep the same categories: stimulus, affected part and direction. A small comparison with clear criteria teaches more than a long list of examples without an organising idea.

Word reference: Collins Dictionary

Put the distinction to work

Choose a hormone entry and a structure entry. Explain how you would recognise that the two words name different kinds of things, without inventing a relationship between them. Then write one research question that could connect them if an appropriate source were available. This exercise rewards a clear question, not an unsupported scientific explanation.

6. Trace structures, materials and pathways

Entries 51–60. Back to contents

Use a labelled drawing as a reading companion. First identify the scale: whole plant, organ, tissue, cell or cell-wall feature. Next decide whether the term names a material, a region or a connection. A careful label helps the reader understand the drawing’s logic.

51. suberin

Say it: SOO-ber-in

中文: 木栓质 · mù shuān zhì

Meaning: A complex fatty material found in certain plant cell walls, especially those of cork cells.

Example: The caption identifies suberin as a wall material rather than as the name of a whole tissue.

中文例句: 图注把木栓质说明为细胞壁材料,而不是整个组织的名称。

Use it well: A substance, a cell and a tissue are different levels of organisation. Keep those levels separate when defining a word. Write a sentence that says where a material occurs without making it stand for the entire plant part; then check whether your diagram uses colour for composition, location or both.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

52. imbibition

Say it: im-bi-BISH-un

中文: 吸胀 · xī zhàng

Meaning: The uptake of liquid by a material that swells as it absorbs the liquid.

Example: Our description of imbibition focuses on uptake and swelling, not just a wet surface.

中文例句: 我们对吸胀的描述关注吸水和膨胀,而不仅是表面变湿。

Use it well: Use the scientific sense clearly because the related verb imbibe can also refer to drinking. A good explanation identifies both the material and the observed change. For a classroom writing exercise, compare “became wet” with “absorbed liquid and swelled,” and explain why the second gives the reader more information.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

53. aleurone

Say it: uh-LOOR-ohn

中文: 糊粉 · hú fěn

Meaning: Protein-rich granules stored in the cells of many seeds.

Example: The glossary helped us distinguish aleurone from the seed tissue in which it occurs.

中文例句: 词汇表帮助我们区分糊粉与含有糊粉的种子组织。

Use it well: This entry names the stored protein material. You may also encounter aleurone layer, a tissue term that needs its own explanation. Do not silently move between material and layer in a summary. Underline the main noun in each phrase, then decide whether the sentence is describing a substance, a cell or a tissue.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster · Dictionary.com

54. water potential

Say it: WAW-ter puh-TEN-shul

中文: 水势 · shuǐ shì

Meaning: Water’s potential energy per unit volume relative to a reference state, commonly expressed in pressure units and used to describe water movement.

Example: We compared water potential before predicting the direction of water movement in the model.

中文例句: 在预测模型中水的移动方向之前,我们先比较了水势。

Use it well: Under the relevant conditions, water moves from higher to lower water potential. This is not the same as simply counting how much water a sample contains. When reading a model, record the reference and units, then distinguish the value of a quantity from the difference between two values.

Word reference: OpenStax

55. pericycle

Say it: PER-i-sy-kuhl

中文: 中柱鞘 · zhōng zhù qiào

Meaning: A layer of cells surrounding the central vascular region in many plant roots.

Example: “Which ring in the root section is the pericycle?” asked the teacher.

中文例句: “根横切面中的哪一圈是中柱鞘?”老师问。

Use it well: The term describes a tissue position, not any circular shape in a drawing. Read from the outside towards the centre, using the diagram’s labels rather than guessing from colour. In your explanation, describe a structure’s relationship to its neighbours before adding a function that the chosen source may not discuss.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

56. Casparian strip

Say it: kas-PAIR-ee-un strip

中文: 凯氏带 · kǎi shì dài

Meaning: A band-like thickening in the radial and transverse walls of many endodermal cells.

Example: The drawing labels a Casparian strip within the wall instead of colouring the whole root with that name.

中文例句: 图中把细胞壁内的凯氏带标出,而没有用这个名称涂满整条根。

Use it well: A wall feature and the surrounding tissue are not interchangeable. Keep the capital letter in Casparian because the term comes from a person’s name. Start with the feature’s location, then ask what further evidence would be needed to explain its composition or role in transport.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

57. endodermis

Say it: en-doh-DER-mis

中文: 内皮层 · nèi pí céng

Meaning: The innermost layer of the cortex in many roots and some stems.

Example: We located the endodermis before discussing the other labels in the root diagram.

中文例句: 我们先找出内皮层,再讨论根部示意图中的其他标签。

Use it well: The beginning endo- suggests inside, but that clue cannot replace the complete definition. Name the structure it is inside and what it borders in the diagram you are using. Practise a location sentence with “between” or “surrounding,” and check that you have not reversed the order of neighbouring tissues.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

58. quiescent centre

Say it: kwy-ES-ent SEN-ter

中文: 静止中心 · jìng zhǐ zhōng xīn

Meaning: A small region of slowly dividing cells within the root apical meristem that helps organise surrounding stem-cell activity.

Example: The quiescent centre appears in our model as a particular region, not as the entire growing tip.

中文例句: 在我们的模型中,静止中心是一个特定区域,而不是整个生长顶端。

Use it well: Quiescent does not mean dead. Avoid turning a relatively low rate of cell division into a claim that nothing happens there. A careful definition can describe a region’s distinctive behaviour without denying its function. When reading a research paper, keep the named plant and experimental context attached to the result.

Word reference: Nature research publications

59. apoplast

Say it: AP-uh-plast

中文: 质外体 · zhì wài tǐ

Meaning: The connected spaces outside plant-cell plasma membranes, including cell walls and intercellular spaces.

Example: The student traced an apoplast route without drawing it through the cell’s cytoplasm.

中文例句: 学生描出了质外体途径,而没有让它穿过细胞的细胞质。

Use it well: Outside the plasma membrane does not necessarily mean outside the plant. That distinction matters when a familiar spatial word enters biology. Use a boundary in your drawing and state which side you mean. Do not confuse a route through tissues with a single empty pipe.

Word reference: Nature research publications

60. symplast

Say it: SIM-plast

中文: 共质体 · gòng zhì tǐ

Meaning: The connected living cytoplasm of plant cells linked through plasmodesmata.

Example: Our comparison identifies the symplast by its connections between living cell interiors.

中文例句: 我们的比较根据活细胞内部之间的连接来识别共质体。

Use it well: Use the plant-transport sense here; some dictionaries use this spelling for a different biological structure. Pair the definition with the relevant diagram and source. When two words look parallel, explain the actual boundary that distinguishes them instead of assuming their prefixes alone provide a complete scientific account.

Word reference: Research paper via PubMed Central · Merriam-Webster

Put the distinction to work

Make a six-label diagram from a reliable plant-science illustration and record the source beside it. Write one location sentence for each label using words such as inside, outside, between or connected. Check every spatial relationship. Finally, remove the labels and ask a partner to replace them using your sentences; revise whichever sentence leads to confusion.

7. Describe an ant society without human shortcuts

Entries 61–70. Back to contents

Animal-society words can sound familiar while naming very specific biological categories. Read the definition before borrowing everyday meanings from work, royalty or family life. Your goal is to describe the evidence clearly, not to turn a colony into a miniature version of human society.

61. eusociality

Say it: yoo-soh-shee-AL-i-tee

中文: 真社会性 · zhēn shè huì xìng

Meaning: A form of social organisation involving cooperative care of young, overlapping generations and a reproductive division of labour.

Example: The class used eusociality to frame a question about how an insect colony is organised.

中文例句: 全班用真社会性来提出一个关于昆虫群体如何组织的问题。

Use it well: Living near other individuals is not enough, by itself, to establish this category. Check the defining features rather than assuming that any large group qualifies. When writing about an animal society, distinguish an observed behaviour from a broader classification, and avoid using the scientific label as praise or criticism.

Word reference: Nature Education

62. haplodiploidy

Say it: hap-loh-DIP-loy-dee

中文: 单倍二倍体性 · dān bèi èr bèi tǐ xìng

Meaning: A sex-determination system in which males typically develop from unfertilised eggs with one chromosome set and females from fertilised eggs with two.

Example: The teacher asked us to label the chromosome sets in the haplodiploidy diagram.

中文例句: 老师要求我们在单倍二倍体性示意图中标出染色体组。

Use it well: This term concerns a reproductive genetic system, not the number of jobs in a colony. Keep haploid and diploid connected to chromosome sets. A classroom model can simplify a pattern, but its caption should not claim that the model covers every exception or explains every feature of social behaviour.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

63. caste

Say it: kast

中文: 品级 · pǐn jí

Meaning: In social insects, a group of individuals distinguished by structure or function within a colony.

Example: The insect diagram uses caste to organise its comparison of different colony members.

中文例句: 昆虫示意图用品级来组织对不同群体成员的比较。

Use it well: This is a biological sense, distinct from the term’s use for human social systems. Make the context explicit rather than borrowing implications from one domain into another. State the trait used to distinguish groups, and do not assume that a category label makes every individual identical in behaviour.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

64. queen ant

Say it: kween ant

中文: 蚁后 · yǐ hòu

Meaning: A reproductive female ant of the queen caste, primarily associated with producing offspring.

Example: The worksheet asks what evidence identifies a queen ant in the species being studied.

中文例句: 练习纸询问,哪些证据能识别所研究物种的蚁后。

Use it well: Queen is a biological role here, not proof of a monarch issuing instructions. Avoid writing an animal story as though every action followed a central command. Use the species description and the source’s actual wording; colony organisation varies, so a single example should not become a universal rule.

Word reference: Arizona State University

65. worker ant

Say it: WER-ker ant

中文: 工蚁 · gōng yǐ

Meaning: A female ant that performs colony tasks such as foraging, nest maintenance or caring for young.

Example: The observer described what the worker ant did before proposing a reason for its behaviour.

中文例句: 观察者先描述工蚁做了什么,然后才提出行为原因。

Use it well: Separate behaviour from motive. “Carried an object towards the nest” is an observation; an explanation of why needs evidence. Do not assume that every worker performs every task or that all species organise work identically. In a short field note, keep the time, action and uncertainty visible.

Word reference: Rockefeller University

66. gamergate

Say it: GAM-er-gayt

中文: 交配产卵工蚁 · jiāo pèi chǎn luǎn gōng yǐ

Meaning: A mated worker ant capable of producing fertilised eggs in species where this reproductive role occurs.

Example: The article’s use of gamergate made us revise the claim that every reproductive ant must have queen morphology.

中文例句: 文章中交配产卵工蚁这一词语,使我们修改了“所有繁殖蚂蚁都必须具有蚁后形态”的说法。

Use it well: Use the entomological meaning explicitly because the spelling also appears in unrelated online contexts. This is a specialised reproductive role, not another name for any worker. Preserve the source’s species limits and avoid expanding an interesting exception into a statement about all ant colonies.

Word reference: Research paper via PubMed Central

67. alate

Say it: AY-layt

中文: 有翅型昆虫 · yǒu chì xíng kūn chóng

Meaning: A winged individual of an insect kind that also has wingless forms.

Example: The photograph’s label identifies an alate, but we still need evidence for the species name.

中文例句: 照片标签标明这是一只有翅型昆虫,但我们仍需要证据确认物种名称。

Use it well: The word can be a noun or an adjective. An alate is the individual; an alate form is a winged form. Recognising wings does not settle every identification question. Practise stating the feature you can support while leaving uncertain details open, rather than turning a partial observation into a complete classification.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

68. myrmecology

Say it: mer-mih-KOL-uh-jee

中文: 蚁学 · yǐ xué

Meaning: The scientific study of ants.

Example: Our myrmecology reading began with a small question about how two ants interacted.

中文例句: 我们的蚁学阅读从一个有关两只蚂蚁如何互动的小问题开始。

Use it well: A subject name tells you the field, not the method or result of a study. Ask whether the source describes observation, an experiment, a model or a review. For your own learning task, choose a question narrow enough to explain clearly, and use photographs or published evidence without disturbing a nest.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

69. superorganism

Say it: soo-per-OR-guh-niz-um

中文: 超个体 · chāo gè tǐ

Meaning: A society of organisms whose coordinated activities allow it to function as an integrated whole.

Example: Calling the colony a superorganism raised a question about cooperation between its members.

中文例句: 把蚁群称为超个体,引出了一个有关成员合作的问题。

Use it well: This is a way to describe organisation, not a claim that the members have merged into one physical body. Ask what function the comparison helps explain and where it stops being useful. A good analogy clarifies a relationship while keeping the difference between the compared things visible.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

70. polydomous

Say it: puh-LID-uh-mus

中文: 多巢的 · duō cháo de

Meaning: Describing a single ant colony that occupies several socially connected nests.

Example: The researchers described the colony as polydomous after examining links between its nests.

中文例句: 研究人员考察各巢之间的联系后,将该蚁群描述为多巢的。

Use it well: Nest and colony are different concepts in this context. One describes a site; the other describes a social unit. When reading a diagram, check how the researchers established connections between sites. Do not assume that nearby nests belong together solely because their entrances are close on a map.

Word reference: Research paper via PubMed Central · Collins Dictionary

Put the distinction to work

Write a short observation and a separate interpretation. For the observation, include only what an image, video or source directly shows. For the interpretation, identify the evidence that would justify it. Practise changing an overconfident sentence into a careful one by naming the species, limiting the situation or explaining what remains uncertain.

8. Follow signals, contacts and seed movement

Entries 71–80. Back to contents

A behaviour can be described at several levels: an individual action, an interaction between individuals or a pattern across a group. Keep those levels distinct. Before asking why an event happened, make sure your account tells the reader exactly what happened and what was measured.

71. trophallaxis

Say it: trof-uh-LAK-sis

中文: 交哺 · jiāo bǔ

Meaning: The transfer of food between individuals in social insects.

Example: We used trophallaxis to name the food-sharing interaction described in the passage.

中文例句: 我们用交哺来命名文章所描述的食物分享互动。

Use it well: The definition concerns a transfer between individuals. Seeing two insects near each other does not, on its own, establish that food was exchanged. In an observation paragraph, say what was visible and what the source identifies as the interaction; this helps you avoid turning proximity into proof.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

72. stigmergy

Say it: STIG-mer-jee

中文: 痕迹协作 · hén jì xié zuò

Meaning: Indirect coordination in which traces left in the environment influence what other individuals do later.

Example: The model uses stigmergy to explain coordination without a direct conversation between every pair.

中文例句: 该模型用痕迹协作解释协调行为,而不要求每一对个体直接交流。

Use it well: Focus on the intermediate environment: an action leaves a trace, and that trace affects a later action. The word is not a synonym for every kind of teamwork. In your explanation, identify all three parts of the sequence so the reader can see why the coordination is called indirect.

Word reference: Research paper via PubMed Central

73. tandem running

Say it: TAN-dem RUN-ing

中文: 串联行走 · chuàn lián xíng zǒu

Meaning: A behaviour in which one ant leads another towards a goal while signals between them regulate their progress.

Example: The video task asks us to describe tandem running before discussing what the follower learns.

中文例句: 视频任务要求我们先描述串联行走,再讨论跟随者学到了什么。

Use it well: Two ants moving in the same direction are not sufficient evidence for this specific behaviour. Describe the leader-follower relationship and the signalling the study reports. When using a word such as teaching in animal research, explain the researchers’ criteria rather than assuming it means a human classroom lesson.

Word reference: Nature research publications

74. stridulation

Say it: strij-uh-LAY-shun

中文: 摩擦发声 · mó cā fā shēng

Meaning: Sound or vibration produced by rubbing specialised body parts together.

Example: The reading describes stridulation as a physical process, so we looked for the parts involved.

中文例句: 阅读材料把摩擦发声描述为一个物理过程,因此我们寻找涉及的身体部位。

Use it well: Do not assume that every animal sound is produced by a voice in the human sense. Explain the mechanism named in the source. If you discuss a particular ant, verify that the behaviour has been reported for that species; a general insect term does not prove that all ants use it.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

75. cuticular hydrocarbon

Say it: kyoo-TIK-yuh-ler hy-droh-KAR-bon

中文: 表皮碳氢化合物 · biǎo pí tàn qīng huà hé wù

Meaning: A hydrocarbon on an insect’s outer surface, belonging to mixtures that can help limit water loss and support recognition.

Example: The paper prompted us to ask how a cuticular hydrocarbon contributes to the chemical profile.

中文例句: 这篇论文促使我们询问,表皮碳氢化合物如何构成化学特征的一部分。

Use it well: Do not describe one molecule as a complete identity card for every ant. The term names a component, while a profile concerns a mixture. When summarising research, distinguish the measured chemical pattern from the behaviour associated with it, and preserve any limits on the claimed relationship.

Word reference: Research paper via PubMed

76. trail pheromone

Say it: trayl FAIR-uh-mohn

中文: 踪迹信息素 · zōng jì xìn xī sù

Meaning: A chemical signal deposited along a route that can guide other members of the same species.

Example: The student’s diagram marks where a trail pheromone is deposited and where another ant responds.

中文例句: 学生的示意图标出踪迹信息素沉积的位置,以及另一只蚂蚁作出反应的位置。

Use it well: A trail signal concerns a route; it is not identical to a body-surface recognition cue. Specify where the signal occurs and which behaviour it affects. A useful explanation avoids suggesting that a chemical trail is a visible painted line or that every ant species communicates in exactly the same way.

Word reference: Research paper via PubMed Central

77. recruitment

Say it: ri-KROOT-ment

中文: 招募行为 · zhāo mù xíng wéi

Meaning: In ant behaviour, the process by which individuals induce nestmates to join a task or travel towards a resource or nest site.

Example: The study measures recruitment after a scout returns, rather than merely counting ants already present.

中文例句: 这项研究测量侦察蚁返回后的招募行为,而不只是统计已经在场的蚂蚁。

Use it well: Use the behavioural sense explicitly; ordinary employment recruitment is a different context. Ask what counts as a response in the study and how it was measured. More individuals at a location do not automatically prove the same communication mechanism in every case, so separate the pattern from its proposed explanation.

Word reference: Nature research publications

78. antennation

Say it: an-ten-AY-shun

中文: 触角接触 · chù jiǎo jiē chù

Meaning: Touching or examining something with the antennae, including contacts between insects.

Example: Our observation note records antennation before making any claim about recognition.

中文例句: 我们的观察记录先记下触角接触,再提出是否发生识别的判断。

Use it well: The action is observable, but its function may require further evidence. A research paper can report an association without establishing that one event caused another. Practise writing two sentences: first describe the contact; then state the interpretation with the level of confidence the source actually supports.

79. myrmecochory

Say it: mer-mih-koh-KOR-ee

中文: 蚁播 · yǐ bō

Meaning: The dispersal of seeds by ants.

Example: The term myrmecochory connects our plant chapter with a question about animal behaviour.

中文例句: 蚁播这一术语把植物章节与一个动物行为问题联系起来。

Use it well: The word identifies a dispersal relationship, not every interaction between ants and plants. Ask what is moved, who moves it and what evidence establishes the destination. A diagram can make those roles clear, but it should not imply that every transported seed survives or that every ant is a seed disperser.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

80. elaiosome

Say it: ih-LAY-uh-sohm

中文: 油质体 · yóu zhì tǐ

Meaning: A nutrient-rich seed appendage that can attract ants which carry the seed.

Example: The drawing labels the elaiosome separately from the rest of the seed.

中文例句: 图中把油质体与种子的其余部分分别标出。

Use it well: The appendage and the seed it accompanies are different things. This distinction helps explain why an animal might carry a seed without consuming the whole seed. Keep the learning activity to a drawing or published image, and never assume an unfamiliar seed is safe to handle or eat.

Word reference: Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew · Collins Dictionary

Put the distinction to work

Choose a behaviour term and explain it as a sequence of three steps. Then identify which step you could observe directly and which might need an experiment or another source. Do not disturb ants or collect unfamiliar seeds for this task. A published recording, an illustration and a well-phrased question are enough for a productive language exercise.

9. Describe basketball movement clearly

Entries 81–90. Back to contents

Sports vocabulary is useful for practising sequence, direction and outcome. A short report can be exciting without becoming vague. Name the action, tell the reader who did it, and distinguish the attempt from the result. The examples here are invented language exercises, not accounts of a real match.

81. dribble

Say it: DRIB-uhl

中文: 运球 · yùn qiú

Meaning: To control a basketball by repeatedly bouncing it on the floor with one hand at a time.

Example: “Can you describe the dribble before you judge whether it was effective?” the coach asked.

中文例句: “在判断是否有效之前,你能先描述这次运球吗?”教练问。

Use it well: The word can be a verb or a noun. In a sports report, name the action and then its result instead of combining them into a vague compliment. For example, identify a change of direction, a protected space or a completed pass, but only if that is what the observed sequence shows.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

82. pivot foot

Say it: PIV-ut foot

中文: 中枢脚 · zhōng shū jiǎo

Meaning: The foot that remains at its point of contact while a player turns with the other foot when holding the ball.

Example: The teacher asked us to identify the pivot foot in the paused demonstration.

中文例句: 老师要求我们在暂停的示范画面中辨认中枢脚。

Use it well: Name the foot and the moment in the sequence. A rule judgement depends on what happened before and after a single image, so a still picture may be insufficient. Use the term to explain movement clearly, and check the applicable basketball rules before deciding whether a particular play was legal.

Word reference: Jr. NBA

83. layup

Say it: LAY-up

中文: 上篮 · shàng lán

Meaning: A basketball shot taken close to the basket, often using the backboard.

Example: After the layup, our imaginary reporter described the approach and the finish in separate sentences.

中文例句: 上篮之后,我们设想的小记者用不同的句子描述了接近篮筐的过程和最后的出手。

Use it well: A layup is a type of shot, not a guarantee of scoring. Use attempted, made or missed to show the outcome accurately. This small verb choice matters in both live commentary and a school recount, where a reader needs to distinguish the action from what eventually happened.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

84. fadeaway

Say it: FAYD-uh-way

中文: 后仰投篮 · hòu yǎng tóu lán

Meaning: A basketball shot taken while the shooter moves away from the basket.

Example: The clip helped us describe a fadeaway without claiming that every backward movement produced a good shot.

中文例句: 这段视频帮助我们描述后仰投篮,而没有声称每一次后退都能形成好投篮。

Use it well: Describe the movement before evaluating it. The term names a shot action, while success depends on the particular play. In a written comparison, explain what separates this shot from a more upright attempt rather than relying only on a famous player’s name or a dramatic adjective.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

85. jump shot

Say it: jump shot

中文: 跳投 · tiào tóu

Meaning: A basketball shot released while the player is airborne after jumping.

Example: We paused the jump shot near the release to choose a precise verb for the caption.

中文例句: 我们在跳投接近出手时暂停画面,为图注选择一个准确的动词。

Use it well: Jump is part of a compound noun here. Keep the action sequence clear: preparation, take-off, release and outcome can be described separately. A caption does not need to explain every detail, but it should identify the moment shown and avoid inventing what happened outside the frame.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

86. crossover dribble

Say it: KROSS-oh-ver DRIB-uhl

中文: 交叉换手运球 · jiāo chā huàn shǒu yùn qiú

Meaning: A dribbling move that transfers the ball quickly from one hand to the other.

Example: The student described the crossover dribble by naming the hand change and the next movement.

中文例句: 学生通过说明换手和随后的动作来描述交叉换手运球。

Use it well: A hand change is an observable feature; whether it deceived a defender is a further claim. Keep those two levels separate. Try a sentence with “then” to establish the sequence, followed by another that explains the result only if the footage or your observation supports it.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

87. bounce pass

Say it: bowns pahs

中文: 击地传球 · jī dì chuán qiú

Meaning: A pass that reaches a teammate after bouncing once on the floor.

Example: A bounce pass reached the waiting player in our original practice scene.

中文例句: 在我们原创的练习场景中,一次击地传球传到了等待接球的队员手中。

Use it well: The compound noun identifies the ball’s route between players. Do not confuse a pass with a player’s own continuing dribble. In a scene description, make the sender and receiver clear. Pronouns can shorten the sentence, but repeated “he” or “she” becomes confusing when several people are involved.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

88. chest pass

Say it: chest pahs

中文: 胸前传球 · xiōng qián chuán qiú

Meaning: A two-handed pass sent from around chest level towards a teammate.

Example: “Explain the chest pass in one clear sentence,” said the teacher during the language activity.

中文例句: 语言活动中,老师说:“用一句清楚的话解释胸前传球。”

Use it well: This term describes a passing action, not a ball striking someone’s chest. Use from and towards to make the direction explicit. A useful explanation combines starting position, action and intended recipient; it need not add claims about the best technique for every game situation.

Word reference: Jr. NBA

89. box out

Say it: boks owt

中文: 卡位 · kǎ wèi

Meaning: To establish position between an opponent and the basket when preparing to contest a rebound.

Example: The commentator explained how the player tried to box out before the ball came down.

中文例句: 解说员解释了球落下之前,该队员如何尝试卡位。

Use it well: This is a two-word verb phrase. Use the base form after to, as in “to box out,” and identify the positional purpose. It does not give permission to hold, push or otherwise foul an opponent. In a report, describe what happened and leave a disputed ruling to the relevant officials and rules.

Word reference: Jr. NBA

90. rebound

Say it: REE-bownd

中文: 篮板球 · lán bǎn qiú

Meaning: A basketball recovered after an unsuccessful shot, or the act of recovering it.

Example: The rebound gave our imaginary team another chance to build an attack.

中文例句: 这个篮板球给我们设想的球队又一次组织进攻的机会。

Use it well: Context distinguishes the basketball noun from the general idea of bouncing back. Use secured a rebound when you mean possession was gained, rather than merely that a player touched the ball. An accurate sequence also records whether the original shooting team or the opposing team recovered it.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

Put the distinction to work

Write a five-sentence account of an imagined practice sequence. Choose three movement terms, keep the players easy to identify, and include one decision. Read it again while imagining the scene. If a reader cannot tell who has the ball, replace an ambiguous pronoun with a name. If the result is unclear, add a precise final verb.

10. Read the game before judging the call

Entries 91–100. Back to contents

A rule term is an invitation to check the relevant competition and sequence of events. This chapter teaches vocabulary rather than a complete officiating manual. When a replay is unclear, a useful question is often more accurate than an instant accusation. Keep the rule, the observation and the judgement separate.

91. shot clock

Say it: shot klok

中文: 投篮计时器 · tóu lán jì shí qì

Meaning: The display that counts down the time a team has to attempt a shot under the game’s rules.

Example: I looked at the shot clock before describing the team’s hurried decision.

中文例句: 在描述球队匆忙作出的决定之前,我先看了投篮计时器。

Use it well: Do not confuse it with the clock showing time remaining in the period. State which clock you mean whenever timing affects your explanation. Durations and reset rules depend on the competition, so this vocabulary definition does not replace the rulebook for the game you are watching.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

92. free throw

Say it: free throh

中文: 罚球 · fá qiú

Meaning: An unopposed basketball shot from a designated line, awarded as a penalty under the rules.

Example: The free throw gave the reporter a quiet moment to check the score.

中文例句: 罚球时,小记者有了一个相对安静的时刻来核对比分。

Use it well: Free does not mean optional or that every player may take the shot whenever they choose. Learn the phrase as a unit. In a recount, distinguish the award of a free throw from its successful completion; “was awarded” and “scored” describe different events.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

93. three-point line

Say it: three-poynt lyn

中文: 三分线 · sān fēn xiàn

Meaning: The boundary beyond which a successful field-goal attempt can score three points.

Example: The camera angle made it difficult to see the shooter’s feet near the three-point line.

中文例句: 摄像机角度使人难以看清投篮者在三分线附近的脚。

Use it well: A distant image may not establish the exact position at release. Use cautious language when the evidence is incomplete. The line’s dimensions depend on the competition; learn what it signifies first, then check the official court specification if a precise measurement matters to your task.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

94. backcourt violation

Say it: BAK-kort vy-uh-LAY-shun

中文: 回场违例 · huí chǎng wéi lì

Meaning: An illegal return of the ball to a team’s backcourt after that team has established control in its frontcourt, subject to the applicable rules.

Example: The replay prompted a question about a possible backcourt violation rather than an immediate accusation.

中文例句: 回放引出了是否可能发生回场违例的问题,而不是立即作出指责。

Use it well: The sequence and the applicable exceptions matter, so do not judge from the ball’s location alone. Ask who controlled it and what occurred across the dividing line. This entry teaches the expression; a full decision requires the rules of the competition and a clear view of the play.

Word reference: NBA Official Rules

95. traveling

Say it: TRAV-uhl-ing

中文: 走步 · zǒu bù

Meaning: A basketball violation involving illegal movement of the feet while holding a live ball.

Example: The students compared the traveling call with the full movement sequence in the replay.

中文例句: 学生们把走步判罚与回放中的完整动作过程进行比较。

Use it well: Traveling is the common American spelling of this rule term; travelling is used in British English. Here it has a specific basketball meaning rather than the ordinary meaning of going on a journey. Avoid reducing the rule to a slogan about steps without checking the gather, pivot and relevant ruleset.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster · NBA Official Rules

96. goaltending

Say it: GOHL-ten-ding

中文: 干扰球 · gān rǎo qiú

Meaning: Illegal interference with a basketball shot, including touching a descending ball above the rim when it can still enter the basket.

Example: “Which part of the shot makes this a goaltending question?” asked the tutor.

中文例句: “投篮的哪个阶段使这成为一个有关干扰球的问题?”导师问。

Use it well: Use the basketball sense; the same word can describe guarding a goal in another sport. Detailed restrictions vary between rule systems, so identify the competition before judging a borderline play. In an explanation, separate the ball’s direction, height and scoring possibility instead of treating any defensive touch as illegal.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

97. personal foul

Say it: PER-suh-nuhl fowl

中文: 侵人犯规 · qīn rén fàn guī

Meaning: A basketball foul involving illegal contact with an opponent.

Example: The report records a personal foul without claiming to know the player’s intention.

中文例句: 报道记录了一次侵人犯规,而没有声称知道队员的意图。

Use it well: Personal is part of the rule term; it does not mean the players have a personal disagreement. Distinguish the action, the official decision and any speculation about motive. A clear sports paragraph can report a disputed incident without insulting the people involved or inventing what they were thinking.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

98. jump ball

Say it: jump bawl

中文: 跳球 · tiào qiú

Meaning: A way of putting the basketball into play by tossing it between opposing players who try to tap it.

Example: At the jump ball, our imaginary reporter watched where the first tap sent the ball.

中文例句: 跳球时,我们设想的小记者观察了第一次拨球把球送向哪里。

Use it well: The expression can refer to the procedure or the ball put into play that way. A jump-ball situation does not necessarily produce a new toss in every competition. Keep the ordinary action description separate from the rule used to resolve a particular situation.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster · FIBA Official Basketball Rules

99. alternating possession

Say it: AWL-ter-nay-ting puh-ZESH-un

中文: 交替拥有球权 · jiāo tì yōng yǒu qiú quán

Meaning: A procedure in which teams take turns receiving a throw-in for specified situations instead of using a jump-ball toss each time.

Example: The teacher used alternating possession to explain why a particular restart did not involve another toss.

中文例句: 老师用交替拥有球权来解释为什么某次重新开始比赛没有再次抛球。

Use it well: This is a rule procedure, not a claim that teams must alternate possession after every play. Specify the ruleset and the situation before applying it. For a language exercise, explain the difference between a general turn-taking pattern and a formally defined entitlement under a sport’s rules.

Word reference: FIBA Official Basketball Rules

100. fast break

Say it: fast brayk

中文: 快攻 · kuài gōng

Meaning: A rapid attack intended to create a scoring opportunity before the opposing defence is organised.

Example: The fast break ended with a pass, so our account followed the team rather than only the ball carrier.

中文例句: 快攻以一次传球结束,因此我们的叙述关注整支球队,而不只是持球者。

Use it well: Break here names an attacking opportunity, not a rest period. Describe the sequence with precise verbs and make the result explicit. A fast move is not automatically a successful one; distinguish the team’s intention from the outcome, then explain which observed detail supports your interpretation.

Word reference: Merriam-Webster

Put the distinction to work

Choose a disputed-play example from a suitable learning resource. Write what is visible, what rule question arises and what information is missing. Avoid guessing a player’s intention. Then explain your uncertainty in one direct sentence. This is transferable beyond sport: careful readers state what the evidence supports and resist filling the gaps with confidence.

Use the words in connected English

These original model scenes show how to explain, plan and revise. They are teaching examples, not reports of actual visits, conversations or experiments.

Model 1: a thoughtful visitor’s notebook

Before the visit, I wrote down three questions and chose the one I cared about most. I did not want my notebook to become a list of impressive names. At the first stop, I made a quick sketch, copied the relevant label and separated what I could see from what I had learned from reading. My friend noticed something I had missed, so I revised the description instead of defending the first version. Later, I checked the detail that still puzzled us. The best part of the exercise was leaving with a clearer question and a paragraph that another person could follow.

Notice the model’s movement from intention to observation, revision and checking. Now write your own imagined visitor paragraph. Include one real destination name, but only add a factual detail after checking its source. Replace three vague adjectives with precise descriptions. Finish with a question that shows what you still want to understand.

Model 2: a plant-science explanation in small steps

A plasmodesma links the cytoplasm of neighbouring plant cells through the wall. I would label the connection before describing a route across several cells.

Reference: Merriam-Webster

The connected cytoplasm forms the symplast. My next sentence would distinguish this interior network from the spaces outside the plasma membranes.

Reference: Research paper via PubMed Central · Nature research publications

In my draft, I had used “inside” three times without saying inside what. I revised each sentence to name the boundary. That made the explanation easier to follow and revealed a gap in my own understanding. Rather than cover the gap with a longer word, I marked it as a question for further reading. A technical paragraph improves when its relationships become clearer, even if the final version is shorter.

Rewrite the model for a younger reader while retaining the two technical terms. Use one everyday comparison, then add a sentence explaining where that comparison stops being accurate. Check that your simplified version still names the right structure and boundary. Simpler wording should reduce unnecessary difficulty without changing the underlying meaning.

Model 3: a careful sports recount

In this invented practice scene, Lina tried a bounce pass to Amir. It reached him after touching the floor once.

Reference: Merriam-Webster

Amir attempted a jump shot, releasing the ball while airborne. The attempt missed, and another player recovered the rebound.

Reference: Merriam-Webster · Merriam-Webster

Our first account said the team had played brilliantly. The second was more useful: it described who moved, who received the ball and how the sequence ended. We still disagreed about whether a different decision would have been better, but that disagreement was now based on a shared description. We could discuss a choice without pretending to know what every player had been thinking.

Write a different ending to the scene using one additional movement term. Keep the invented status clear and do not turn it into a report about a named professional player. Then underline your action verbs and circle your opinion words. Decide which opinions you can support with a detail already present in the paragraph.

A small retrieval routine

Choose five entries from one chapter. Read them once, hide the meanings and explain each in your own words. Check the explanations, correct one important mistake and write a new sentence for the hardest term. Later, return to the same five without rereading first. The aim is an honest check of what you can explain, not a performance of familiarity while the answers remain visible.

For transfer, connect one place or person with one question from a subject chapter. State the documented connection in a short sentence and label your new question as your own. This keeps historical facts and educational exploration related without mixing them together. A student who can make that distinction is doing more than memorising a list.

Practice prompts with a worked response

Prompt: A classmate writes, “The picture proves that the ants know exactly what every other ant wants.” Revise the sentence so it distinguishes observation from interpretation. Then identify one additional piece of evidence you would need. You do not need to name a mechanism unless the source actually supports it.

Possible response: “The picture shows several ants close together, but it does not establish what information they exchanged. I would need observations over time and an appropriate study before proposing a communication mechanism.” This answer improves the claim by specifying what the image shows, stating its limit and describing a reasonable next question.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a basic travel phrasebook?

It is a vocabulary-and-reading guide. The place names help with orientation, while the subject chapters support deeper study and original writing. For immediate practical communication, select a few names and turn your needs into short polite questions. There is no need to use a specialist scientific word when a simple question will serve the situation better.

Why are science and basketball included?

Röntgen, Sachs and Hölldobler have documented Würzburg connections. Nowitzki was born in the city. These connections motivate the guide’s subject routes.

Reference: Röntgen Memorial Würzburg · University of Würzburg · University of Würzburg · Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame

The later vocabulary is a learning extension. It does not mean every word belongs to a local exhibit, that every discovery happened in the city, or that every research example concerns a local species. Read the cited source for the concept you want to investigate.

Should a younger learner study all 100 entries?

Choose a manageable set. A learner might begin with a destination, a person and a small group of sports words, while another may prefer the plant chapter. Ask for one accurate explanation and one original sentence before adding more entries. Difficulty should create a useful question, not pressure to recite unfamiliar terms without understanding.

How should I use the Chinese and pinyin?

Use the Chinese meaning to establish the intended sense, then return to the English example. The pinyin belongs to the Chinese label; it is not the pronunciation of the English or German headword. Proper-name renderings help recognition, while the original spelling remains the clearest way to match an official sign or source.

Are the example visits and conversations real?

No. They are original teaching examples, including the named classroom characters and imagined visits. The factual definitions and city connections are supported by references. This separation lets students practise natural language without mistaking an invented conversation or practice scene for a historical event or a visitor testimonial.

Can the physics chapter help me assess medical X-ray risk?

Use it to understand vocabulary and formulate questions. It cannot assess a person’s exposure or replace advice from an appropriate qualified professional. If you have a real medical question, discuss the examination, circumstances and concerns with the clinical team. Do not infer a dose or a safety judgement from a photograph, a device name or this learning list.

Does the basketball chapter settle every rule dispute?

No. The entries explain terms at a general level. A decision about a particular play requires the competition’s current rules and the full sequence of events. Use the governing body’s official materials and distinguish a vocabulary definition from a complete officiating explanation, especially when comparing different competitions.

How can this become an English composition?

Choose one purpose: a visitor’s reflection, an explanation, a comparison or a careful recount. Select three to five terms that genuinely help that purpose. Draft the paragraph, remove any word you cannot explain, and check every factual claim. End with a supported conclusion or a thoughtful open question rather than a list of names.

Sources and vocabulary references

Research checked 4 October 2026. Official city, university, museum and research-institute pages support the Würzburg connections. Scientific papers, educational publications, dictionaries and official basketball resources support the vocabulary senses. The teaching explanations, examples, Chinese translations and practice tasks are newly written. Research terminology is included for reading and learning, not for medical diagnosis or laboratory instructions.
