Singapore Quarry | Opening Hours, Hillview Directions and a Scenic Walk Guide

Three students reviewing open textbooks, notes and stationery together at a classroom table.

Singapore Quarry is a lake attraction within Dairy Farm Nature Park, open from 8am to 6.30pm daily according to NParks. For visitors coming from the Upper Bukit Timah and Hillview area, it offers a clear destination for a scenic walk. Its hours are shorter than the surrounding park’s 7am-to-7pm opening window.

Plan your route using the official Dairy Farm Nature Park map, with the quarry marked as the destination. NParks identifies Hillview MRT as a nearby station and Carpark A as the carpark on that side. Allow for the approach walk and the return journey; arrival at Hillview is not arrival at the lake.

Did you know that Singapore Quarry is different from Dairy Farm Quarry and Hindhede Quarry? Similar names can conceal different routes and settings. Before meeting friends, share the exact destination and starting point so that everyone is planning the same walk.

SECTION 1 OF 5

1. Find the right quarry on the map

A place name is more helpful than a vague instruction to meet “at the quarry.” Look for Singapore Quarry on the official park map and agree on an identifiable public meeting point before you begin.

If your group travels separately, choose the starting point rather than the attraction as the meeting place. This gives everyone a chance to check water, footwear and the return plan before walking. It also avoids sending a late arrival alone along an unfamiliar route.

2. Let the opening window shape the day

The earlier quarry closing time matters when you are planning an afternoon outing. Leave room to enjoy the destination and return comfortably instead of treating closing time as the moment to start heading there.

Do not take a timing from one park attraction and apply it to another. An education centre, a quarry and a forest route may each have different arrangements. Check the official visitor information again on the day, along with access notices.

For a group with children, agree on a return decision before everyone is tired. It is easier to enjoy a place when the way home is already understood.

3. Look for movement as well as scenery

Singapore Quarry gives you a reason to slow down. NParks highlights dragonflies and birds around the lake, including the Stork-billed Kingfisher. A wildlife mention describes what may be present; it does not guarantee a sighting during your visit.

Choose a quiet position within the visitor area and watch for a few minutes. Notice where movement begins and where it disappears. Binoculars can help, but patient attention is useful even without equipment.

If an animal appears, give it space. Avoid chasing it, offering food or playing sounds to draw it closer. You can enjoy the encounter without controlling it.

4. Read the landscape with better questions

A former quarry can make a child ask why there is water beside a steep rock face. Begin with the visible evidence: rock, water, vegetation and the shaped landscape. Separate what you can observe from what you still need to investigate.

Try the question, “What suggests this place has changed over time?” An answer might begin with a visible contrast between a rock face and the plants around it. That is a starting observation, rather than a complete account of its history.

Take one photograph as a memory aid, then describe it later without looking. Returning to the image helps you notice what memory kept, simplified or missed. It is an easy way to practise precise language.

5. Choose a comfortable outing, with clear boundaries

Keep to designated paths and viewing areas. The lake is a scenic destination; do not interpret an attractive water surface as an invitation to enter it. Follow the signs and barriers you encounter.

NParks allows leashed pets on the route from Carpark A to Singapore Quarry. That permission does not extend to Wallace Trail. If you are bringing a dog, plan around the permitted route and keep the return simple.

A quarry visit can stand on its own. For another day, our Rifle Range Nature Park guide introduces a different outing. Comparing destinations before travelling helps you choose one that fits your group.
