Places in Bukit Timah | Hillview Bridge, Rail Mall Access and 2027 Walking Plans

Hillview Connect road link beneath the Rail Corridor in the Hillview and Dairy Farm area of Singapore.

Did you know? You can get from Hillview MRT to the Rail Corridor and on to the Rail Mall without relying on a hazardous road crossing. The accessible Hillview Bridge and a separate extended overhead pedestrian connection across Upper Bukit Timah Road are now established parts of the area’s green transport network.

This is especially useful for visitors planning a 2027 walk. The bridges are already there; the practical questions are which exit to use, where the accessible lift is, and why the nearby truss bridge and the southern Rail Corridor’s separate improvement works must not be confused.

Hillview Bridge: the quick visitor guide

  • Where: Rail Corridor (North), close to Hillview MRT and Upper Bukit Timah Road.
  • Nearest MRT: Hillview (DT3), Exit B on the Downtown Line.
  • NParks directions: leave Exit B, turn right and follow the ramp towards the Rail Corridor.
  • Wheelchair access: NParks describes Hillview Bridge as accessible via the lift near Exit B. Other trail sections require their own surface and gradient checks.
  • Nearby food and shops: the Rail Mall, linked by an extended overhead pedestrian bridge across Upper Bukit Timah Road.
  • Toilets: Hillview MRT station and the 9 Mile Platform next to the Upper Bukit Timah Truss Bridge.
  • Lighting: the main Rail Corridor is not lit through the night, even though the route is technically open 24 hours; plan daylight walking.

What is Hillview Bridge and when did it open?

NParks announced the opening of Rail Corridor (North) on 8 February 2023. Hillview Bridge is one of the enhancements described in that opening. It restored a pedestrian link across Hillview Road and allowed users to continue along the Rail Corridor more comfortably.

An especially thoughtful detail is built into the bridge’s surface: railway tracks are embedded in its flooring. They are not an operating railway. They are a design reminder that this green recreational route was once part of a rail transport system connecting Singapore and the Malay Peninsula.

This means the Hillview Bridge should not be described as something that is due to open in 2027. The bridge has been available since the earlier improvements. Dates associated with other green links should be kept separate.

How does the Rail Mall connection work?

NParks explains that an existing pedestrian overhead bridge along Upper Bukit Timah Road was extended to connect directly with the Rail Corridor. This gives walkers easier access to food and water at the Rail Mall without depending on an at-grade road crossing.

That improvement may sound small, but it solves an everyday urban planning problem. A person can be surrounded by green space and still struggle to reach a shop safely if a busy road sits between the two. Connecting established infrastructure can make a neighbourhood walk more useful.

The Rail Mall is a separate commercial place with tenants and their own operating hours. Access to a pedestrian bridge does not mean any particular café is open or that food prices will stay the same into 2027.

What is the Upper Bukit Timah Truss Bridge?

A little further along the corridor is the iconic truss bridge, a reminder of the former railway. NParks also highlights a lookout deck nearby that offers views towards Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Dairy Farm Nature Park.

These features are related to Hillview Bridge as part of a connected walk, but they are not the same structure. Hillview Bridge crosses Hillview Road; the old truss bridge is a heritage railway feature; and the extended pedestrian overhead connection helps reach the Rail Mall. Keeping the three distinct makes route instructions much clearer.

Use official Rail Corridor access maps rather than making up a shortcut across train tracks, drainage channels or roads. Even when a heritage bridge is attractive for photographs, other walkers and cyclists need a safe passage.

The trail has two very different surface experiences

NParks describes northern stretches of the Rail Corridor as rustic, with grass and gravel underfoot. Other sections use a firmer porous aggregate surface. This matters if your group includes a pram, wheelchair user or visitor who finds uneven surfaces difficult.

NParks identifies Hillview Bridge itself as wheelchair accessible, with a lift route from the station. That statement should not be stretched into a claim that every kilometre of the surrounding Rail Corridor is step-free. Check each intended access point and the section of trail you plan to use.

When a route is mixed-use, cyclists should slow near pedestrians and narrow places, and walkers should avoid blocking the full path while taking photographs.

How to plan a straightforward visit in late 2026

  • Start at Hillview MRT Exit B and follow the official ramp and signs to Hillview Bridge.
  • Pause to notice the embedded railway-track design and the contrast between infrastructure and greenery.
  • If interested in the historic truss bridge, follow only the signed open trail towards its permitted viewpoints.
  • For a rest stop, use the pedestrian bridge link to the Rail Mall and check the chosen outlet’s hours.
  • Locate public toilets near Hillview MRT or 9 Mile Platform before continuing on a longer route.
  • End the walk in daylight; do not count on continuous lighting along the green corridor.

The route can be as short or long as your group is comfortable with. A child might enjoy identifying three ways transport and nature meet here: the original railway, the current MRT and the green route that replaced the railway. A longer trip can connect these observations to broader lessons about adaptive reuse.

What’s happening nearby through 2027?

Hillview Bridge, Rail Corridor (North) and the Rail Mall access link are already in use. A 2027 visitor does not need to wait for those particular bridges to be built.

The significant 2027 closure to keep separate is farther south: NParks has improvement works on the Rail Corridor segment between Henderson Road and Spooner Road, with a target completion date in July 2027. Those southern works do not by themselves close the Hillview access point.

See our southern Rail Corridor closures and 2027 reopening guide for details, and check the current NParks access notices before attempting a much longer north-to-south route. Do not assume an older route map means every southern stretch is open.

For the nearby quarry landscapes, our Singapore Quarry versus Dairy Farm Quarry article explains how two former quarry sites offer different visitor experiences. The access, opening hours and trail conditions for nature parks differ from a transport bridge.

How does this tie into the wider Bukit Timah future?

The original railway alignment has become a green connection across the city. The restored Bukit Timah Railway Station node shows how station buildings can be adapted for community use, while Hillview Bridge demonstrates how a missing pedestrian link can be restored.

That is a useful distinction from the separately planned Bukit Timah–Rochor Green Corridor skywalk near King Albert Park. A completed Hillview access bridge in the north is not evidence that a different elevated green link will be finished earlier than officially scheduled.

For another compact heritage stop in the district, see our Kampung Garden and Herb and Spice Garden at Bukit Timah Railway Station. The two experiences complement one another, although their public transport starting points are different.

Frequently asked questions

Did Hillview Bridge open in 2026 or will it open in 2027?

It formed part of the Rail Corridor (North) improvements announced in February 2023. It is already operating, subject to local access notices.

Which Hillview MRT exit should I use?

NParks directs visitors to Exit B, then right along the ramp towards the Rail Corridor.

Is Hillview Bridge wheelchair accessible?

NParks says yes, using the lift near Hillview MRT Exit B. The suitability of any additional rustic Rail Corridor path should be checked separately.

Is the Upper Bukit Timah Truss Bridge the same as Hillview Bridge?

No. These are separate structures serving different historical and access roles. Use the official map when moving between them.

Does the July 2027 southern closure affect this bridge?

The published southern closure concerns Henderson Road to Spooner Road, not Hillview Bridge itself. Local access advisories should still be checked on the day.
