JC1 H1 Chemistry Tutor | Preparing a One-Page Lesson Brief

Three students in school uniforms work through open books at a classroom table, with textbooks and stationery nearby and study notes on the whiteboard behind them.

A JC1 H1 Chemistry tutor can make a lesson easier to use by preparing a one-page brief: the learning target, the prerequisite, one starting task and the check that will show whether the student can work independently. For Hougang families, the brief makes tuition’s purpose visible without adding another large folder to a busy school week.

The brief is a teaching map, not a substitute for explanation. It should follow the student’s H1 course and school sequence, distinguish essential practice from optional extension and tell the learner what to bring back next time. A trainer prepares it from actual student work rather than filling the page with every topic that might be interesting.

SECTION 1 OF 6

1. Start with one decision the learner must make

The target should describe something the student will do: choose a relationship, interpret a condition, justify a conclusion or check a calculation. ‘Cover concentration’ is a topic label. ‘Choose and use the relationship between amount, volume and concentration with consistent units’ gives the lesson a practical direction.

A narrow target does not mean the subject is being oversimplified. It makes the first step manageable and leaves room to connect it later. The tutor should explain why this decision matters in the student’s current school work. If the target cannot be connected to an actual need, reconsider whether it deserves today’s lesson time.

2. Keep the prerequisite visible

List what the learner must already know, then use a short opening task to check it. A concentration lesson may depend on converting a volume into the required units. A student who knows the formula but cannot make that conversion needs a different explanation from someone who misunderstands the relationship.

The brief should allow the plan to change. If the opening task reveals an unexpected gap, repair that gap rather than force the prepared worksheet through the session. Record the change in a short note. Thoughtful preparation provides direction; it does not require the tutor to ignore evidence that appears during teaching.

SECTION 3 OF 6

3. Separate the model from the independent attempt

Use a worked example to explain the reasoning and show where each quantity comes from. Then provide a different task for the learner. Label them distinctly so the student knows when help is available and when the tutor is checking independent control.

Do not put every step of the worked method beside the checking task and then describe the result as unaided. The student may simply substitute into a supplied procedure. A trainer’s brief should make the handover of decision-making explicit, including any reminder that will be removed for the final attempt.

SECTION 4 OF 6

4. An illustrative concentration brief

Target: calculate concentration in mol dm⁻³ from an amount and a volume. Prerequisite: convert cm³ to dm³. Worked example: 0.030 mol in 150 cm³ gives 0.030 ÷ 0.150 = 0.200 mol dm⁻³. Independent task: 0.040 mol in 250 cm³ gives 0.160 mol dm⁻³.

Ask the learner to state why the volume was converted and what the answer means. The point is not merely the two final numbers. The tutor checks whether the student selects the relationship and controls the units. These are fictional teaching examples, not reported student results or a complete assessment of H1 readiness.

SECTION 5 OF 6

5. Make the home task and review small enough to use

End the brief with one purposeful task and a review instruction. A learner might complete several conversion decisions and one concentration question, showing working. Explain what to mark if they become stuck. The next session should actually inspect that work rather than issue another packet automatically.

Do not promise a universal workload or fixed time requirement. School tutorials, other subjects, CCA and travel differ. Parents can ask whether the task fits the week’s demands and what learning it protects. An unfinished task should trigger a discussion about difficulty and clarity, not an immediate assumption of poor motivation.

SECTION 6 OF 6

6. Use the brief without turning it into bureaucracy

In a 3-pax lesson, the group may share the topic while each student’s brief records a different prerequisite or checking task. Keep personal observations private. Shared discussion is useful, but every learner needs a separate attempt before the tutor concludes that the method is secure.

Confirm H1 Chemistry 8873 and the applicable examination-year syllabus with the school and SEAB. The brief organises teaching within that course; it does not establish national grading rules. A parent can ask the student to describe today’s target and the next check. If both are clear, the page is doing useful work.

A practical tutor-and-student checklist

CheckWhat to make visible
TargetThe independent decision being trained
PrerequisiteThe foundation checked at the start
ExampleA transparent model of the reasoning
AttemptA fresh task with assistance recorded
ReviewThe work to bring back and inspect
Use the checklist to choose the next teaching decision.

Begin with one recent marked response or unfinished school task. Ask what the learner can already do, which decision still needs support and what a fresh attempt will check. Use that evidence to agree on a manageable next step rather than automatically add more worksheets.
