A JC1 H2 Chemistry tutor should help students carry the same chemical relationship between an equation, a graph and a written explanation. For Hougang learners, a common difficulty is not recognising a formula but understanding what its symbols and graphical features mean. Training translation makes that connection explicit.
The trainer prepares several representations of one idea and checks whether the learner can move between them without changing the meaning. This is not a separate syllabus chapter. It is a practical teaching skill used within the student’s H2 course, and it can reveal a missing connection that ordinary formula practice leaves hidden.

SECTION 1 OF 6
1. Begin with the physical meaning of the quantities
Before rearranging an equation, ask what each symbol represents and which units are being used. A formula is a compact relationship, not a collection of letters to match with numbers. The learner should be able to describe the quantity that would increase, decrease or stay unchanged under stated conditions.
Use the current school topic rather than introduce an unrelated advanced graph. The tutor can start with a familiar relationship to establish the translation routine, then apply it to more demanding H2 work when appropriate. The aim is to make representations useful for thinking, not decorate a solution with three versions of the same copied answer.
SECTION 2 OF 6
2. State what is being held constant
A relationship changes when its conditions change. If concentration is held constant, the amount of solute is proportional to solution volume. If the amount is held constant while volume changes, concentration behaves differently. The student must know which comparison the task describes.
Write the condition beside the equation and graph. Do not assume it is obvious from the lesson title. A trainer should prepare questions that deliberately contrast the two cases, then ask the student to explain why one graphical relationship cannot automatically be used for the other.
SECTION 3 OF 6
3. Translate one relationship carefully
For solutions with the same concentration c, the relationship n = cV connects solute amount n and solution volume V. With n on the vertical axis and V on the horizontal axis, a graph of this ideal proportional relationship is a straight line through the origin. Its gradient represents c when the units are consistent.
In words: doubling the volume of a solution at the same concentration doubles the amount of solute represented. This describes different quantities of solution at a fixed concentration, not the act of adding pure water to one fixed amount of solute. That distinction prevents a correct mathematical line from becoming a wrong account of dilution.
SECTION 4 OF 6
4. Check units, axes and the meaning of a point
A point is not meaningful until the axes and units are labelled. For c = 0.20 mol dm⁻³ and V = 0.10 dm³, n = 0.020 mol. Ask the student to describe this point in a sentence and explain what the gradient compares.
Then change the axis order. If V is vertical and n horizontal, the gradient is 1/c, with its corresponding units. The Chemistry has not changed, but the graphical representation has. This makes a useful check of whether the learner understands the relationship or simply remembers that ‘the slope is concentration’.
SECTION 5 OF 6
5. Prepare a translation task rather than another substitution
Give an equation and ask for a verbal condition. Give a graph description and ask which quantities are related. Give a statement and ask for a suitable labelled graph. The task should require the student to preserve meaning, not just calculate a value.
Record where translation fails. A student may calculate correctly but reverse the axes, interpret a coefficient as a measured result or omit the fixed condition. Each calls for a specific repair. Once the connection is secure, use the routine in the appropriate school topic rather than repeat the elementary example indefinitely.
SECTION 6 OF 6
6. Verify individual meaning after group discussion
A 3-pax class can compare three descriptions of the same relationship. Ask everyone to attempt first, then discuss differences. Finish with a new individual representation so a fluent peer’s explanation is not mistaken for understanding by the whole group.
Confirm H2 Chemistry 9476 and the examination-year scope. Mathematical fluency supports Chemistry but does not replace chemical assumptions, course knowledge or supervised practical work. Parents can ask which representation caused difficulty and whether the student can now explain the same relationship in another form.
A practical tutor-and-student checklist
| Check | What to make visible |
|---|---|
| Equation | Name symbols, units and conditions |
| Graph | Label axes and interpret features |
| Words | Describe the chemical relationship |
| Return check | Translate back without changing meaning |
Begin with one recent marked response or unfinished school task. Ask what the learner can already do, which decision still needs support and what a fresh attempt will check. Use that evidence to agree on a manageable next step rather than automatically add more worksheets.
