JC2 H3 Chemistry Tutor | Choosing Extension Reading Without Losing the Main Course

Three students in school uniforms work through open books at a classroom table, with textbooks and stationery nearby and study notes on the whiteboard behind them.

A JC2 H3 Chemistry tutor should choose extension reading for a specific learning purpose rather than send an ever-growing list of advanced material. For Hougang learners, useful reading connects to the enrolled H3 route, asks a clear question and leads to a bounded explanation or application. More sophisticated vocabulary does not automatically mean deeper understanding.

Begin with the student’s actual course, examination year and school expectations. SEAB lists Cambridge H3 Chemistry as 9813 in the referenced directories, but support should not assume every enrichment or university-linked option has identical requirements. The trainer’s task is to help the learner read purposefully while preserving the main course and wider study workload.

SECTION 1 OF 6

1. Define the question before selecting the reading

A reading task should answer something specific: how a model accounts for an observation, which assumption limits an explanation or how a new idea connects to known Chemistry. Decide what the learner should be able to explain afterwards.

Do not choose a source solely because it looks advanced or has a prestigious title. The content may assume prerequisites the learner has not studied or address a different course. A tutor should be able to explain why this passage belongs in the current training plan.

2. Check provenance and prerequisites

Identify the author or issuing organisation, publication context and source type. A textbook explanation, research paper and promotional page have different purposes. Check whether the content supports the particular claim the learner is being asked to use.

Then inspect the required background. Where a new symbol or model is essential, prepare a short introduction. If too much of the reading depends on untaught material, choose another passage or narrow the task. Difficulty alone is not evidence that a resource is educationally useful.

SECTION 3 OF 6

3. An illustrative task with a new model

Suppose a tutor supplies an authorised passage introducing a simplified reaction model with two possible pathways. Ask the learner to identify the model’s assumptions, explain what the passage predicts and state which observation could distinguish the pathways. Use only the information actually supplied and the relevant course foundations.

The student should not invent extra measurements or claim that a plausible pathway is uniquely established. If the passage leaves a quantity undefined, mark that limit and prepare a question. This fictional reading activity illustrates selection and interpretation; it does not describe a particular publication or an official H3 examination item.

SECTION 4 OF 6

4. Set a bounded output

Ask for a short argument, labelled comparison or explanation of one figure. State the expected scope so the learner knows when the task is complete. A vague instruction to ‘read around the subject’ can expand indefinitely.

The output should require reasoning, not merely collecting new terms. Ask which idea connects to existing knowledge and what the source does not establish. The tutor can then inspect whether the reading produced a usable connection rather than an impressive-looking summary.

SECTION 5 OF 6

5. Keep extension separate from urgent repair

If the student is missing a prerequisite needed for current school work, repair that first. Extension reading should not displace essential H2 or H3 learning merely because it is more interesting. Coordinate the task with the actual school timetable and other subject demands.

Agree on a practical boundary for the reading and a time to review it. If the learner cannot enter the passage, inspect the prerequisite or the task design instead of assigning several more sources. The trainer should reduce the obstacle, not multiply it.

SECTION 6 OF 6

6. Return the reading to a defensible explanation

In a 3-pax discussion, let each learner prepare an interpretation first. Compare what evidence each used and what remains uncertain. Finish with an individual revised explanation so the tutor can see whether the connection holds.

Consult the applicable SEAB document and the school course lead for formal requirements. Parents can ask why this reading was chosen, what it adds and what the learner can now justify independently. A good extension task ends with clearer reasoning and a sensible next question.

A practical training checklist

CheckWhat to make clear
PurposeA specific question worth investigating
SourceClear provenance and relevant content
PrerequisiteBackground the learner needs
OutputA bounded argument or explanation
ReturnA connection to the actual course
Use this checklist to prepare and review the learning task.

Bring one recent marked response or unfinished attempt to the discussion. Ask what the learner already controls, which decision still needs teaching and what the next independent task will reveal. A manageable target makes tuition easier to use and progress easier to review.
