JC2 H3 Chemistry Tutor | Recording Unresolved Questions for Later Verification

Three students in school uniforms work through open books at a classroom table, with textbooks and stationery nearby and study notes on the whiteboard behind them.

A JC2 H3 Chemistry tutor should have a clear way to return to a question that cannot be resolved responsibly during the lesson. For Hougang students, an uncertainty log makes the next step visible: record the precise claim, separate what is established from what is provisional and identify what would settle the issue.

This guide concerns follow-through, not the appearance of having an instant answer. It complements source checking and research interpretation by showing how the tutor carries an open question from discussion to verification, correction or an honestly limited conclusion.

CHAPTER 1 OF 6

1. Capture the question precisely

Back to contents

Write the statement or inference that remains uncertain. ‘Check catalysts’ is too broad; ‘does this rate comparison establish a change in equilibrium composition?’ identifies a question that can be examined.

Preserve the relevant conditions and source location where available. A claim can change meaning when a caption or qualifier is detached.

Ask the student whether the note captures their uncertainty. The tutor’s interesting extension may differ from the learner’s original question.

2. Separate established and provisional parts

Back to contents

Record what the supplied evidence directly states, what follows using the taught model and what remains a proposed explanation.

Do not leave a speculative answer in the student’s revision notes without a visible status. A fluent explanation can be remembered as settled even when the speaker intended it as tentative.

A useful status might be ‘needs source check’, ‘needs calculation check’ or ‘not resolved by supplied information’. Keep labels practical and understandable.

CHAPTER 3 OF 6

3. Use a catalyst question as a bounded example

Back to contents

In a fictional discussion, a learner asks whether a catalyst makes an equilibrium mixture contain more product because the reaction becomes faster. The tutor records the question without endorsing that inference.

For the same reaction at the same temperature, a catalyst does not change the equilibrium constant. It can help the system approach equilibrium faster; a rate observation alone does not establish a different equilibrium composition.

The tutor should also inspect the actual scenario. Different reaction networks, competing pathways or measurements taken before equilibrium may need additional analysis rather than a stock sentence applied indiscriminately.

CHAPTER 4 OF 6

4. Choose the evidence needed

Back to contents

Some questions need an authoritative definition or course reference. Others require checking a calculation, the original methods or whether a figure actually supplies the claimed information.

Write what the source must answer before searching. This reduces the temptation to accept the first passage containing familiar vocabulary.

Use primary or authoritative material where possible, and read enough surrounding context to assess the claim. A search snippet is not a complete explanation.

CHAPTER 5 OF 6

5. Return the result to the learner

Back to contents

Close the loop with a short checked response: the question, the supported answer, the relevant conditions and any remaining limit. Link or identify the source where appropriate.

If the earlier provisional explanation was wrong, correct it explicitly so the learner knows which statement to replace. Do not quietly supply a different answer and assume the notes will align.

If the available information does not settle the matter, say what remains unknown. Verification can produce a narrower conclusion rather than a single definitive answer.

CHAPTER 6 OF 6

6. Keep the log useful rather than endless

Back to contents

Prioritise questions that affect current understanding, assessment preparation or a claim already taught. Interesting extensions can remain parked without displacing essential course work.

In a 3-pax setting, share a general clarification where useful, while keeping personal learning records separate. Check that each learner understands a correction that affects their work.

Parents can ask what remains open and when it will be revisited. A modest, visible follow-up is more useful than a promise that every scientific question will be settled immediately.

A checklist for the next lesson

CheckWhat to make clear
QuestionRecord the exact uncertain claim and conditions.
StatusDistinguish established, provisional and missing information.
EvidenceIdentify what a source or calculation must decide.
ReturnGive the learner an explicit checked clarification.
ClosureRecord the answer or the remaining limitation.

For parents who want tuition to be clear, structured, and worth the time, begin with one recent piece of schoolwork and the student’s actual course details. Ask what the next lesson will address and how independent understanding will be checked. If considering a 3-pax group, confirm current subject support, location and availability directly with the provider.
