Murnane Trail is listed by NParks as a difficult 3km hike, starting from the Rifle Range Link of MacRitchie and ending at Rifle Range Nature Park. It is a connecting forest hike, not the short boardwalk visit that some people associate with Rifle Range.

Plan your visit
The useful starting question is whether everyone wants a difficult hike. A published distance can sound modest while still asking more of your footing, stamina and preparation than a neighbourhood stroll.
Choose for the least confident walker in the group. If someone primarily wants a wetland view or an easy outing, consider a shorter park route instead. You can enjoy Bukit Timah’s nature without using the most demanding connection available.
Find both endpoints on the current official map before leaving home. The listed trail length does not include reaching its start, leaving its finish or returning to a parked car. Those additional journeys can change the outing substantially.
Avoid treating the word MacRitchie as one precise meeting point. Save the actual access route and a planned exit, and share them with your walking companions. If the connection is unfamiliar, allow time to orient yourselves at signed junctions.
Our planning advice is to carry water, wear footwear suited to uneven ground and start with enough daylight for the entire outing. Check the official park pages and signs for current restrictions or diversions.
Keep a comfortable margin rather than scheduling to the fastest possible pace. Agree when you will reassess the plan if progress is slower than expected. Turning back while everyone still has energy is easier than discovering too late that the return was omitted from the schedule.
Stay on designated trails. A line visible through vegetation is not permission to create a shortcut, and a mapped connection does not override a closure sign. Observe wildlife from a distance without feeding or approaching it.
For a family, one useful activity is to notice how the view changes along the signed route. Leave species identification open when unsure. There is no need to leave the path to make the walk educational.
At Rifle Range, reassess energy before adding a lookout or another trail. Reaching the park is a destination in itself; it does not obligate everyone to complete its attractions.
Use the linked park information to confirm opening arrangements and your exit. This guide is for selecting and preparing for Murnane Trail, not a substitute for current wayfinding on the ground. A well-planned connection ends with enough energy to get home comfortably.
