Find your next map-learning step
Read the symbols, follow a visible token, and explain one clear route.
A child may recognise a bench on a map but still find “turn left” confusing after the traveller turns around. This lesson for ages 8–10 connects twenty map words to a small, visible task: read the key, locate a starting place, follow a route and explain the choices. Children can work with a paper token and the same fictional grid in four languages.
The English, Mandarin, Hindi and Russian editions share word numbers, symbols and events. Every card includes definitions and sentences in all four languages, with links to the matching entry in the other editions. Begin with a language your child understands, then compare another when the meaning is clear. Four languages can be explored at a comfortable pace.
This is a tabletop language activity using invented places and letter codes. It assumes no country, road layout, public transport system or school curriculum. A pencil and a paper token are enough; an adult can read while the child points or moves the token. The grid helps explain spatial language without requiring an outdoor trip.

Chapter 1–4
Chapter 5–8
Chapter 9–12
Start by placing two picture cards beside each other. Ask the child to show beside, then place a token between two cards. Next draw a small arrow on the token and ask which way it faces. These actions separate understanding position words from recognising a landmark name or remembering a translation.
If the child locates the correct cell but uses a home-language word, offer the new label in a short sentence. If the label is correct but the token turns the wrong way, keep the token’s arrow visible and model one quarter-turn. A different facing direction is a useful new example, because it tests the relationship rather than the page position.
Choose a small goal: locate two symbols, explain between, or follow one turn and two moves. Some children can explain an idea through pointing before producing a complete sentence. Give the amount of language support needed and record it, then revisit the same meaning in a different arrangement.
The first five entries explain how a map communicates. The next words help describe movement and relative position; the final entries identify places and compare travel. Connect the roles in one sentence: “The key explains the symbol at our destination, and the route tells us how to reach it.”
Translations match the map sense used in the lesson. Key means a legend, right means a side, and straight is a movement instruction. Natural phrases differ in length and word order. Twenty refers to twenty learning entries rather than the same number of written words in every language.
Pinyin gives Mandarin tone marks. Hindi and Russian Roman-letter guides are approximate aids; Russian accents mark the stressed vowel. Read a whole example and listen to a fluent speaker when possible. Position phrases often need different grammar in a sentence, so the card form is a starting point.
1. map · 地图
English: map
A representation of an area that helps show places and their relationships. A map selects information rather than showing every real object. Our lesson map is an invented worksheet; it does not describe a real park or a route to follow outdoors.
We use the map to find the bench.

Explain what the map shows and name one thing it leaves out.
2. symbol · 符号
English: symbol
A mark used to represent something. In our map, BE represents a bench. A symbol need not look like its object; its meaning comes from the map’s key. Our letter codes are invented for this worksheet.
BE is the symbol for the bench on this map.

Choose a symbol and check its meaning in the key before naming it.
3. key · 图例
English: key
The explanation of a map’s symbols, also called a legend. Read it before assigning meanings to unfamiliar marks. Here key means the map guide, rather than a key for opening a door or a button on a keyboard.
The key tells us that TR means tree.
Change one symbol in your own copied map and update its key too.
4. route · 路线
English: route
A way of travelling from one place to another. A route contains an ordered set of moves, not only a starting point and a destination. Different routes can reach the same place and can have different lengths.
Our route goes from A1 to B1, C1, C2 and C3.
简体中文·普通话: 路线 (lùxiàn)

Русский: маршру́т (marshrut)
Путь от одного места к другому. Маршрут содержит последовательность перемещений, а не только начало и цель. Разные маршруты ведут к одному месту и могут различаться длиной.
Наш маршрут: A1, B1, C1, C2, C3.
Trace A1, B1, C1, C2, C3 in order and count the moves.
5. direction · 方向
English: direction
The way someone or something faces or moves. Name the reference when it matters: the page, a traveller or a compass direction. Our page-based exercise uses up, down, left and right without treating page-up as automatically north.
We check the token’s direction before choosing a turn.

Show a token facing up, then down. State what changed.
6. left · 左边
English: left
The side on a person’s or token’s left, relative to the way it faces. A traveller’s left can point toward the page’s right after the traveller turns around. Here left does not mean remaining or having departed.
When the token faces down the page, its left is toward the page’s right.

At C3, face down and point to the token’s left before moving.
7. right · 右边
English: right
The side on a person’s or token’s right, relative to its facing direction. Point to the token before saying “turn right”. Here right is a position, rather than an answer being correct or a person’s entitlement.
At C1, a token facing right turns right to face down.

At C1, face right and make a right quarter-turn in place.
8. straight · 直走
English: straight
Continuing in the same direction without a turn in this route instruction. Straight depends on the traveller’s current heading. It can mean moving down the page if that is where the token already faces.
From C1, we face down and go straight through C2 to C3.
Face down at C1 and go straight for two moves. Name the last cell.
9. turn · 转弯
English: turn
To change facing or movement direction. In the token task, a quarter-turn changes the heading by ninety degrees. Turning in place is different from moving one cell, so keep the actions separate when explaining a route.
We turn at the tree before moving toward the bench.
Turn once without changing the cell. Explain why the move count stays unchanged.
10. near · 附近
English: near
At a relatively small distance from something. State what it is near and which comparison you are making. Near has no single fixed distance for every person, map or activity.
The bench is near the exit in our small grid.

बेंच से खानों की चाल में प्रवेश-द्वार निकास से अधिक दूर है।
Русский: далеко́ (daleko)
На сравнительно большом расстоянии. По возможности задайте сравнение или измеренный путь. Одно место бывает далеко от одного объекта и близко к другому.
От скамейки вход дальше выхода по числу шагов сетки.
Name both places when saying farther away. Keep the same distance method.
12. beside · 旁边
English: beside
Next to or at the side of something. Name the two things in the relationship. In our grid, the bench and exit occupy neighbouring cells; beside does not tell us every possible route between them.
The exit is beside the bench.
简体中文·普通话: 旁边 (pángbiān)
紧邻某物或在其一侧,要说清两者。本图长椅和出口占相邻格。旁边这个词本身不说明所有可走路线。
出口在长椅旁边。
हिन्दी: बगल में (bagal mẽ)

Выход рядом со скамейкой.
Point to the bench and exit, then use beside in a complete idea.
13. between · 之间
English: between
In a position separating two named things in this example. Identify both reference places. We use a cell between the tree and bench; the word alone does not mean it is equally far from every surrounding object.

Put the token between the tree and bench. Name both reference cells.
14. behind · 后面
English: behind
At the back of a stated person or object, or in the direction opposite their front. Facing matters. If the token at C2 faces down the page, the tree at C1 is behind it; turning the token can change that relationship.

В C2 при взгляде вниз дерево остаётся позади нас.
At C2 face down, then turn around. Explain how behind changes.
15. opposite · 对面
English: opposite
Across from something in the chosen spatial arrangement. Here the fountain and flowers face across the middle cells. The Hindi choice can also mean in front of, so use the full example to keep the across-from meaning clear.
The flowers at D2 are opposite the fountain at A2 across row 2.

Знак выхода EX находится в D3.
Make EX a new destination and explain how the journey’s purpose changes.
18. landmark · 地标
English: landmark
A recognisable feature used to help identify a place or follow a route. It need not be a famous monument. In our map, the single tree is a useful landmark because the route changes direction there.
We use the tree as a landmark for our turn.

Choose a useful landmark and explain what instruction it helps you follow.
19. destination · 目的地

20. distance · 距离
English: distance
How far apart places are, or how far a route travels, with the method stated. Our worksheet counts moves between neighbouring cells. Without a real-world scale, these counts cannot be converted into metres or travel minutes.
The route A1, B1, C1, C2, C3 has a distance of four grid moves.
简体中文·普通话: 距离 (jùlí)
地点相隔多远或路线走多长,需要说明方法。本练习数相邻格之间的移动。没有现实比例尺,步数不能换算成米或出行分钟。

Расстояние по маршруту A1, B1, C1, C2, C3 — четыре перехода.
Compare four-move and six-move routes between the same start and finish.
Read the grid by column letter and then row number: C2 means column C, row 2. The top row is 1. This worksheet uses its own simple labels, rather than claiming to teach a formal national grid-reference system. Place an arrow token in a cell to show its position and heading.
Key: EN entrance; TR tree; FO fountain; FL flowers; BE bench; EX exit; · an unlabelled grid position. These are invented symbols, shared by the four editions. All cells may be visited in this pretend activity. Move one cell horizontally or vertically at a time; diagonal moves are excluded. A symbol marks a place to visit and does not act as an obstacle.
The page has no compass arrow and no real-world scale. Keep page directions separate from north, south, east and west. Count a move only when the token crosses into a neighbouring cell; its starting cell and a turn in place do not add a move.
| Row | A | B | C | D |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | EN | · | TR | · |
| 2 | FO | · | · | FL |
| 3 | · | · | BE | EX |
English
A Journey on Paper. Mila and Ravi place a paper token at the entrance EN in A1. Their destination is the bench BE in C3. First they read the key: TR is a tree, FO a fountain and FL flowers. They choose the route A1, B1, C1, C2, C3. Mila points the token’s arrow toward the right side of the page. They move straight from A1 through B1 to C1, making two moves. The tree is their landmark. At C1 they turn the token right in place, so its arrow now points down the page. The turn adds no grid move. They go straight through C2 to C3, making two more moves. At C2 the tree is behind them and the bench ahead. At C3 they have reached their first destination after four moves. The exit EX is beside the bench in D3. To reach it while facing down, they turn left, which points toward the page’s right, and move one cell. Ravi notices that the fountain in A2 is opposite the flowers in D2 across the middle cells of row 2. They then reset the token at A1 and compare another route to the bench: A1, B1, C1, D1, D2, D3, C3. This has six moves and visits the flowers and exit before the bench. Both routes reach C3, but they travel different distances on the grid. Mila asks how many metres the longer route represents. Ravi checks the map. It has no real-world scale, so they can report six grid moves but cannot turn that into metres. They draw a new map key together and give their token a different destination for the next game.

Try each question with the grid visible. Let the child move the token before explaining, then ask for a reason or a coordinate. Note whether the answer was independent, followed a picture cue or repeated an adult’s model. These supports help you choose the next teaching step.
For a mistaken turn, return to the heading just before the turn and show the token’s own right and left. For a distance error, trace the links between cells rather than counting printed cell names. Keep the correction specific, then change the start or heading to check the meaning again.
1. Where is the first destination?
2. What does TR mean on this map?
3. How many moves are in A1, B1, C1, C2, C3?
4. At C1 facing right, which way does a right turn point?
5. At C3 facing down, which turn reaches D3 in one move?
6. What is between the tree and bench?
7. At C2 facing down, what is behind the token?
8. What is opposite the fountain across row 2?
9. How many moves are in A1, B1, C1, D1, D2, D3, C3?
10. Can we report the route in metres from this map?
Answer guide
- The bench BE at C3.
- Tree, according to this map’s key.
- Four moves. Five cell names include the starting cell, which adds no move.
- Down the page after a quarter-turn.
- Turn left, then move one cell toward the page’s right.
- C2, between C1 and C3.
- The tree at C1. Facing up would change that relationship.
- The flowers at D2, across the middle cells from A2.
- Six moves. It reaches the same bench after visiting additional places.
- No. There is no real-world scale; report the stated grid moves.
The seven-day route is an example to adapt. Repeat a useful row and keep sessions manageable. Revisit a few familiar words before adding more. Once the token work is clear, compare one meaningful sentence in another language while leaving the same grid visible.
| Day | Words | Activity | What to notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | map · symbol · key | Read the key, then locate three symbols. | Uses stated meanings rather than guessing from letter shape. |
| 2 | route · direction · destination | Choose a start and finish; trace ordered cells. | Separates goal from the moves to reach it. |
| 3 | left · right · straight · turn | Use a visible arrow and change the heading. | Tracks the traveller’s side after a turn. |
| 4 | near · far · distance | Count moves with the same rule. | Names the places and measurement method. |
| 5 | beside · between · behind · opposite | Move the token and name the reference places. | Uses position words with clear reference points. |
| 6 | entrance · exit · landmark | Follow the story’s four-move route and its continuation. | Uses the tree as a turning landmark. |
| 7 | review · transfer | Draw a fresh grid and compare two routes. | Keeps meaning when the arrangement changes. |
For support, use three entries: map, beside and destination. Cover part of the grid and choose two clearly labelled cells. Let an adult read, and accept pointing, drawing or a familiar communication aid. Add left and right with a visible arrow only when the smaller task is comfortable.
For a stretch task, keep the start and destination but compare two routes. Ask the child to count four and six moves, then explain what the longer route visits. A longer route may be chosen to visit a landmark; length is one feature of a route, not the whole decision.
Keep the discussion on the invented map. Children do not need to share their home address, school route or personal movements. A new fictional room, garden or game board gives enough material for transfer. Real journeys require suitable adult guidance and current information about the actual place.
Draw a new two-by-three grid with your own key and destination. Ask the child to locate a symbol, describe two positions and follow a short route. Change the token’s heading after the first successful attempt. This checks whether the spatial relationship travels to a new arrangement.
Look for accurate reference points, fewer prompts and explanations that match the token’s movement. A child may know the relation in one language before recalling its translation. Record those separately. Reuse the words in later activities before treating one correct worksheet as stable mastery.
Must children know compass directions first?
No. This lesson uses the page and the token’s heading. Keep those references clear. A future lesson can introduce compass directions with an explicit orientation.
Why does left sometimes point right on the page?
Left belongs to the traveller’s facing direction in that instruction. When the token faces down, its left points toward the page’s right. Show this by rotating an arrow token.
Are the letter symbols universal?
They are invented for this exercise. Other maps can use different symbols, so read each map’s own key.
Why are there four moves but five cell names?
The first name is the starting place. Each following move crosses to the next cell: A1 to B1 is the first move.
Is the shortest route always the best choice?
A choice depends on the purpose and conditions. On the worksheet, one route visits flowers before the bench. Real places also have access and safety conditions that this fictional grid does not model.
Can children answer in a familiar language?
Yes. Check the spatial meaning, then introduce a new label. A correct token movement and a remembered translation are useful but separate observations.
How can we use all four editions together?
Open the same word number in each edition. Compare one sentence while keeping the map and token unchanged, so the language changes but the spatial situation remains visible.
What should we study next?
Use the shapes lesson to design a new grid and the time-and-planning lesson to describe the order of moves. Return to these map words with a changed starting point.

Definitions, examples, symbols, grid and parallel stories are original material for this lesson. Ordnance Survey explains how map keys support symbol reading and why orientation information matters. Its resources do not certify these translations or turn this fictional grid into a real navigation map.
