English to Indonesian Translation | How to Translate English into Bahasa Indonesia Accurately

To translate English into Indonesian accurately, first decide what the English message means, who will read it, and what they should do next. Bahasa Indonesia does not use English-style tense endings, often expresses grammatical relationships through prefixes and suffixes, and distinguishes inclusive and exclusive forms of “we.” It also has established spelling and word-choice conventions for public and professional writing. A word-by-word translation may look readable while changing an instruction, event status or relationship.

Here is a practical example. “Please submit the application by Friday” can become Harap kirimkan permohonan paling lambat hari Jumat. This is a clear courteous instruction in an appropriate service context, but the original may mean a specific application form rather than the request itself. Formulir permohonan might be needed for the form. For a real deadline, the organization should specify the calendar date, cutoff time and time zone. Accurate translation includes recognizing that a vague English source cannot be made fully precise through confident guessing.

For everyday correspondence, school materials and routine websites, a clear first draft followed by targeted review is often efficient. For contracts, medical directions, safety procedures, financial obligations and official submissions, involve a suitable human translator and qualified specialist reviewer. An Indonesian sentence can be perfectly grammatical and still incorrectly tell a person to submit a document twice or pay an additional fee.

English to Indonesian translation: a practical five-step method

Read the entire English paragraph first. Identify its speaker, audience, purpose and central action. Mark people, objects, timelines, conditions, quantities, names and words such as must, may, only, unless, at least, at most and not yet. These items frequently determine whether the translation leads to the right action.

Choose the target voice: standard public Indonesian, business correspondence, learner-friendly prose or conversational dialogue. Write the Indonesian as a coherent sentence rather than preserve every English word in the same position. Compare it with the source clause by clause, then read the Indonesian independently to test clarity.

Use this quick checklist:

  • Are all people and objects still in their original roles?
  • Is a recommendation still advice rather than a requirement?
  • Does a negative apply to the same part of the sentence?
  • Are exceptions, eligibility criteria and deadlines still correct?
  • Is kami or kita appropriate to who is included in “we”?
  • Do active and passive verbs retain the correct agent and result?
  • Are currency, numerical value, date and unit unchanged?
  • Does the final Indonesian sound natural to the intended reader?

This sequence is faster than polishing every sentence repeatedly. The most expensive errors come from changing meaning; stylistic improvements follow after those have been removed.

Bahasa Indonesia is not a literal version of English

Bahasa Indonesia is the national language of Indonesia and is used across a multilingual country with many local languages. It has a recognizable standard written form that supports education, institutions, publishing and much media. Everyday conversational Indonesian can vary in register, vocabulary and informal patterns according to setting and community.

A document for a national public agency may benefit from a clear standard style, while a campaign or character dialogue set in a particular city may use conversational expressions deliberately. There is no advantage to inserting slang into a public safety warning merely to make it appear local.

A good brief might say: “Contemporary standard Indonesian for adult readers in Indonesia; respectful, direct and accessible; preserve official names, exact dates and currency codes; use a consistent company voice.” That brief prevents the translator from changing between stiff and colloquial styles without purpose.

Indonesian and Malay: similar languages do not mean identical deliverables

Indonesian and Malay share substantial historical and grammatical foundations, but their standardized vocabulary and everyday usage differ. A Malay translation for Singapore or Malaysia is not automatically a fully localized Indonesian translation, even when many sentences can be understood across language varieties.

One clear example is percuma. In Malay it commonly means “free of charge,” while in Indonesian it often means “in vain” or “useless.” Indonesian gratis is a familiar word for “free of charge.” A price label that copies Malay percuma may communicate the wrong message to an Indonesian reader.

Transport terms also illustrate the distinction. Indonesian kereta api means train; Malay kereta often means car. In Indonesian, mobil is familiar for car and kereta is not a universal substitute. Compare local expressions rather than assuming that two related languages use the same common noun for the same thing.

Choose a standard Indonesian reference for important text

For spelling, punctuation and published Indonesian, consult the official Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia yang Disempurnakan (EYD) guidance. The official EYD V portal covers letters, spelling of affixed words, prepositions, particles, numerals and punctuation. This is more useful for a professional publication than an arbitrary online language-tip page.

For vocabulary and definitions, the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI) Daring is a core reference maintained by Indonesia’s language authorities. Dictionary access and features may require an account. A dictionary helps verify spelling and meanings, but it cannot decide all the pragmatic details of a sentence without context.

Use references according to the problem. A spelling guide resolves whether a prefix is attached. A dictionary helps check whether a borrowed term is appropriate. A subject specialist decides whether the translated document names the correct medical procedure, academic instrument or administrative process.

Formal Indonesian versus colloquial Indonesian

An official notice may use Anda and carefully structured verbs, while friendly conversation may use aku, kamu, or locally familiar forms. Colloquial Jakarta speech often contains vocabulary and grammar not normally chosen for nationwide formal documents. Such expressions are legitimate in their contexts, but must not be introduced automatically into all content.

Compare Silakan periksa data Anda (“Please check your details”) with a relaxed personal prompt using cek or another familiar expression. The choice is not only grammatical; it shapes how much distance exists between speaker and reader. A banking notice usually needs different wording from a message between close friends.

A single document should not alternate between formal address and a playful personal voice unless the design calls for it. Consistency improves trust and lets readers understand which institution is speaking.

Saya, aku, Anda and kamu: English pronouns are not enough

Saya is a common first-person pronoun suitable for many neutral and polite contexts. Aku is natural in familiar or more personal language. Anda addresses readers respectfully or neutrally in many public-facing materials; kamu is familiar and commonly used in personal contexts.

English “I” and “you” do not identify the social relationship. A machine translation that chooses kamu for every customer may sound too familiar or awkward. Conversely, a playful message between close friends may not need repeated Anda.

In user instructions, an impersonal request can sometimes work better than repeating pronouns: Silakan pilih tanggal (“Please select the date”). That avoids guessing age, gender or closeness. The translator’s job is to give the reader the right instruction at a fitting distance.

Kami versus kita: the most consequential “we” choice

Indonesian distinguishes kami and kita. Kami generally excludes the person being addressed; kita generally includes them. English “we” may refer to either group without making it explicit, so the translator must inspect the source context.

A customer support company might write Kami telah menerima permohonan Anda (“We have received your application”). The company is the group that received it, not the customer. A teacher speaking to students might say Kita akan belajar bersama (“We will learn together”), because the speaker includes the students.

This difference is not just a conversational nicety. In a contract or agreement, the wrong form could suggest that the customer shares an institutional responsibility. Always identify who belongs to “we” before choosing the Indonesian pronoun.

Dia, beliau and pronoun reference

Dia is a common third-person singular pronoun without the he/she distinction of English. Beliau is respectful when referring to someone who merits that form of address in context. The choice does not depend simply on the English spelling of “he” or “she.”

In a paragraph about a manager, a customer and a teacher, an English “they” may be ambiguous. An Indonesian translation using mereka may not resolve which group was intended. The safest repair is often to repeat a noun or the proper name rather than add an unsupported interpretation.

For official records, preserve identity and professional roles carefully. A source that does not identify the actor of approval should not cause a translator to invent an approving officer merely because an active Indonesian sentence is easy to write.

Indonesian sentence structure: familiar order, different details

Indonesian frequently uses subject–predicate or subject–verb–object patterns that resemble English in basic sentences. Siswa itu membaca buku means “The student reads a book” in an appropriate context. This does not mean that every English clause can be transferred with identical word order.

Noun phrases, passive constructions, relative clauses and focus can differ. Buku yang dibaca siswa itu means “the book read by that student,” using a relative construction. A literal English modifier pattern can become unnatural or obscure who performs the action.

Long English legal or technical sentences may need to be divided into shorter Indonesian sentences. That is acceptable only when the conditions and exceptions remain linked correctly. Make a map of the source logic before deciding where to divide the target text.

Yang: identify the intended noun and modifier

Indonesian yang often introduces modifiers and relative-like constructions. Orang yang menelepon can mean “the person who called.” Dokumen yang sudah diterima can mean “the document that has already been received.” These are useful structures for creating natural, explicit Indonesian descriptions.

An English clause such as “the parent who called the teacher” is not the same as “the parent whom the teacher called.” A translation that changes active and passive relationships can reverse the event. Check who placed the call and who received it before selecting the Indonesian verb form.

In educational and technical prose, too many nested yang clauses can make a sentence difficult to follow. Shorten or restructure carefully rather than copying every embedded English clause. Read the Indonesian alone and make sure each description clearly attaches to its intended noun.

Indonesian verbs do not conjugate like English past tense

English marks many past verbs with “-ed” and changes irregular forms such as go/went. Indonesian verbs generally do not have direct equivalent tense conjugations. Time and event status can be expressed through words such as kemarin (yesterday), sekarang (now), besok (tomorrow), sudah, telah, sedang and akan.

Saya membaca laporan kemarin means “I read the report yesterday.” Saya sedang membaca laporan means “I am reading the report.” Saya akan membaca laporan points toward future reading. The verb remains recognizable while the timeline changes through context and additional expressions.

Do not insert telah or akan automatically for every English tense. The correct choice depends on whether the source describes completion, current process, scheduled plan, prediction or habitual activity. A translation should preserve the event’s status, not an English grammatical label.

Sudah, telah, sedang, masih and belum

These words are important for workflow accuracy. Sudah and telah can express completion or already-occurring events, with differences in register and usage. Sedang indicates an ongoing process in many contexts. Masih means “still” in suitable constructions, while belum commonly means “not yet.”

Compare Pembayaran belum diterima (“The payment has not yet been received”) with Pembayaran sudah diterima (“The payment has been received”). The difference may affect whether a customer tries to pay again. Permohonan sedang diproses means an application is being processed, not necessarily approved.

Make a process table before translating a sequence of user notifications: submitted, received, under review, approved, rejected, completed. Use the correct Indonesian words for each state and never upgrade an event because a phrase sounds more reassuring.

Prefix meN-: forming many active verbs

Indonesian has rich systems of affixation. The meN- prefix family is common in many active verb formations, with the actual form varying according to the root. Membaca means “read,” menulis means “write,” mengirim means “send,” and memeriksa can mean “inspect” or “check.”

You cannot add the letters me- mechanically to every root. Consonant changes and established vocabulary matter. A translator should learn the actual word rather than improvise an affixed form from an English gloss.

The important semantic check is agency: Petugas memeriksa formulir means “The officer checks the form.” If the source says the form was checked by the officer, an appropriate passive may be useful. Either way, the officer remains the checker and the form remains the checked object.

Prefix di-: the difference between passive verbs and a preposition

Indonesian di- can form passive verbs: Dokumen dikirim kemarin means “The document was sent yesterday.” Separately written di commonly introduces locations, as in di kantor (“at the office”). This is an important spelling distinction in published Indonesian.

Dikirim is one word, while di kantor is two. Confusing them creates nonstandard writing even when the intended meaning is clear. The official EYD V spelling guide addresses affixes and prepositions, and is useful for checking these forms.

Passive voice can also alter information focus. “We approved your request” explicitly identifies the approving organization, while “Your request was approved” foregrounds the decision. Do not remove an actor when the source makes that actor important to responsibility or accountability.

-kan and -i: the action’s direction can change

Indonesian suffixes such as -kan and -i participate in many verb constructions with different argument structures and meanings. Mengirimkan can describe sending an item, while other affixed verbs can highlight an affected object, beneficiary or location. The distinction varies by verb and cannot be generalized into one simple English preposition.

A writer may understand the English action correctly but select a verb that gives the recipient or object the wrong role. In a message about sending a certificate to a student, ask which thing moves, who receives it and what the institution is promising.

When uncertain, check real example sentences in a reliable Indonesian dictionary or reviewed corpus, not just the isolated root meaning. Affixes are functional elements of the language; they are not decorative endings.

Prefix ber-: actions, possession and states

Ber- appears in many established Indonesian words and can express different grammatical and semantic functions. Berjalan means “walk,” berbicara means “speak,” and bersepeda can mean “ride a bicycle.” The exact relationship depends on the root.

Do not interpret every ber- word as the same type of English “to do.” A word may refer to an activity, having something, using something or another relationship. For professional translation, choose the established full word, not a plausible invention.

Context also determines whether the sentence should be active, passive or stative. “The device is operating,” “The device has been operated” and “The device is operational” are different claims. The Indonesian target should retain the same one.

Ke-…-an: a form can change part of speech or meaning

The circumfix ke-…-an appears in nouns and other constructions. Keamanan means “security/safety” in many contexts, while kebersihan means “cleanliness.” Other words using the pattern can have different meanings, including certain experiences or states.

English nouns formed with “-ness” are not translated simply by attaching ke-…-an to every Indonesian adjective. Vocabulary is conventional, and domain terminology may prefer an established noun or multiword phrase.

For a document about data security, distinguish security policy, safety of users, personal privacy and technical access control. A shared English word such as “safe” may require different Indonesian terms according to what is protected. Do not let a familiar affix create a false technical equivalence.

Reduplication: plural does not mean repeat every noun

Indonesian uses reduplication in many constructions. Buku-buku may refer to books in an appropriate context, while anak-anak commonly means children. Repetition can also convey other lexical or grammatical meanings depending on the word.

English plurals are not automatically translated by repeating every noun. A numeral or quantifier may already identify the quantity: tiga buku means three books. Tiga buku-buku is not the normal simple equivalent and may sound wrong in ordinary standard language.

When translating inventory or policies, preserve the scope. “All customers” is different from “several customers,” and “three boxes” is different from “three items.” Decide what is quantified before choosing the Indonesian structure.

Adalah and ialah: do not insert “is” everywhere

Indonesian has words such as adalah and ialah, but ordinary nominal or adjectival sentences do not require one-to-one translation of every English “is.” Dia guru can mean “He/She is a teacher” in an appropriate context. Dokumen ini penting means “This document is important.”

A mechanical translation like inserting adalah after every subject can make writing clumsy or ungrammatical in context. The correct form depends on whether the predicate is a noun phrase, adjective, verb or location expression.

Identify what English “be” does: identification, classification, state, location or existence. Then write natural Indonesian. That approach saves effort and produces better clarity than treating adalah as an all-purpose word for “is.”

Tidak, bukan, jangan and belum: four different negatives

Tidak commonly negates verbs and adjectives. Bukan often negates noun phrases or classifications. Jangan commonly expresses a negative command. Belum often means “not yet.” None is a universal translation of English “not.”

Saya tidak tahu means “I don’t know.” Ini bukan formulir yang benar means “This is not the correct form.” Jangan kirim ulang tells someone not to send again. Kami belum menerima formulirnya reports that the organization has not received the form yet.

A policy may fail if “You do not need to register” becomes “Do not register.” One removes an obligation; the other imposes a prohibition. Translate the speaker’s intended action and rule before selecting the negative word.

Modal verbs: boleh, bisa, dapat, harus and perlu

Boleh often expresses permission. Bisa and dapat can express ability or possibility, with differences of register and context. Harus commonly expresses a requirement. Perlu can describe necessity. English “can,” “may,” “should” and “must” overlap with these meanings but do not match them one-to-one.

“You may submit an extra document” can become Anda boleh mengirim dokumen tambahan when permission is intended. “You must submit an extra document” calls for Anda harus mengirim dokumen tambahan if it is a strict requirement. Both may be grammatical; only one reflects the original.

For “may change,” mungkin berubah or dapat berubah might be appropriate according to the precise uncertainty. A translation that changes a possibility into a certainty misleads readers, especially in research, finance and product claims.

If, unless, only if and until

Indonesian commonly uses jika or apabila in conditional statements. Jika berkas lengkap, kami akan memproses permohonan can mean “If the documents are complete, we will process the application.” The condition does not assert that the documents are already complete.

Hanya jika can express “only if,” while kecuali jika can express “unless” in suitable constructions. “Please do not submit again unless requested” may become Harap jangan mengirim ulang kecuali jika diminta. Removing the exception changes what is permitted.

Sampai or hingga may introduce an endpoint, but a sentence such as “Wait until the review is finished” must preserve the action’s order. Do not accidentally tell users to begin waiting after completion. Translate conditions by their logic, then confirm the connector and phrasing.

Sebelum, sesudah and setelah: sequence matters

Sebelum expresses “before,” while setelah and sesudah commonly express “after.” In technical instructions, these relationships are essential. “Disconnect power before cleaning” is not the same as “Disconnect power after cleaning.”

A phrase such as Setelah pembayaran diterima, pesanan akan diproses means “After payment is received, the order will be processed.” This does not mean processing begins before payment. In e-commerce or financial systems, that distinction may affect the reader’s next action.

For multi-step procedures, draw a sequence of boxes before translating. Verify the required starting condition, each action and the final outcome. A natural Indonesian sentence is only correct if it preserves the process.

Di, ke and dari: location, direction and origin

Indonesian di commonly marks location, ke often marks direction or destination, and dari often marks origin or source. Di kantor means “at the office,” ke kantor “to the office,” and dari kantor “from the office” in suitable contexts.

Do not treat every English “at” or “by” as a simple location. “Submit by Friday” sets a deadline; “written by the manager” identifies authorship; “travel by train” identifies a means of transport. These require different constructions.

This matters for shipping instructions, classroom routes, medical directions and data transfers. If a sentence says “download the file from the server,” the Indonesian must not instruct someone to upload it to the server. Draw the movement from source to destination if necessary.

Upload versus download: unggah and unduh

Indonesian has established terms unggah for upload and unduh for download in many digital contexts. Mengunggah berkas means uploading a file, while mengunduh berkas means downloading one. Translating both as a generic “send file” can lose the essential transfer direction.

A form button labeled “Upload document” should not be translated as though it retrieves a document from the website. The user action, backend result and confirmation message must correspond. The same applies to “import,” “export,” “sync,” “save” and “share.”

Technical localization should be tested in the actual interface. Read the target label, press the button, and confirm that the resulting operation matches what the Indonesian user expects. A vocabulary list cannot verify functionality.

Personal names, companies and government institutions

Personal and institutional names are identity information, not simply ordinary vocabulary. A company may have an official Indonesian registered name, and a foreign university may have an established translation or choose to retain its source title. Do not invent a new institutional identity through literal word replacement.

Government procedures and school qualifications differ across countries. If an English text names a Singapore examination, it should not be relabeled as an Indonesian examination merely because they involve students of similar ages. Preserve the official source name, then explain it if readers need context.

Passport names, reference numbers, addresses, email accounts and URLs are also functional data. Translate explanatory labels where appropriate, but keep identifying strings intact unless a verified official localized form exists.

Indonesian numbers, dates and currencies

An English numeric date 03/04/2026 may mean March 4 or 3 April depending on its locale. The Indonesian target cannot safely guess. Confirm the intended source date, then write 3 April 2026 or 4 Maret 2026 as appropriate.

Indonesian commonly uses a comma as a decimal separator and a point as a thousands grouping separator in many contexts. A value written 1,234.50 in one English numeric convention may be displayed as 1.234,50 in Indonesian style, but the underlying quantity must not change.

Large-number words also require checking. Juta means million, miliar means billion in modern short-scale usage, and triliun means trillion. Do not confuse them. Currency is independent of language: a price in SGD remains SGD unless a separate authorized conversion is performed and labeled.

Worked translation: a professional customer-service email

English: “Thank you for contacting us. We have received your request and will reply within three working days. Please do not submit the form again unless we ask you to.”

Indonesian: Terima kasih telah menghubungi kami. Kami telah menerima permohonan Anda dan akan memberikan tanggapan dalam tiga hari kerja. Harap jangan mengirimkan formulir lagi kecuali jika kami memintanya.

The message preserves acknowledgement, receipt, timeframe and the exception to resubmission. It does not assert that the application has been approved. Hari kerja is a useful expression for working days, but the institution’s actual holiday and working-day calendar determines the deadline.

The word permohonan should be checked against the actual transaction. The customer may have submitted a general inquiry rather than an application. A precise translation uses the organization’s approved term and does not invent a process stage.

A second worked example: refund status

English: “We have received your refund request. It is being reviewed. You do not need to send another request at this time.”

Indonesian: Kami telah menerima permintaan pengembalian dana Anda. Permintaan tersebut sedang ditinjau. Untuk saat ini, Anda tidak perlu mengirimkan permintaan lain.

Notice the status distinctions. Receipt is not approval, review is not payment, and lack of need to resubmit is not necessarily a prohibition. The phrase untuk saat ini preserves the time-limited nature of the instruction.

If the source says “Your refund has been processed,” a different Indonesian status is needed. A translator should not choose the most reassuring message merely because it sounds positive. Good service communication states what the organization actually knows.

Website localization: the action behind each button

English “Apply” may mean applying for a job, applying a coupon or applying a setting. Indonesian buttons might use Lamar, Ajukan, Terapkan, Gunakan or another action depending on context. A dictionary entry cannot settle the correct label without the screen.

“Save” may be Simpan. “Cancel” may be Batal in a dialog, while cancellation of a paid booking requires more explicit context. “Delete” may be Hapus, but a confirmation dialog should identify exactly what will be removed and whether the action is reversible.

Review the whole flow: forms, errors, loading indicators, confirmation states, checkout totals, account recovery and email follow-ups. An accurate page description is not enough if the final user action is translated incorrectly.

E-commerce localization and consumer trust

A product listing may describe stock, price, quantity, warranty and shipping. English “free shipping” can become gratis ongkir in informal consumer copy or bebas biaya pengiriman in a more formal style, but both must reflect the actual pricing policy. Do not promise free delivery if some destinations still pay a fee.

“Up to 20% off” is a maximum possible discount, not a promise that every product receives exactly 20%. “In stock” is different from “available for preorder.” “Refund requested” is different from “refund issued.” These statuses should be checked independently of promotional tone.

For checkout, record currency, tax treatment, delivery cost and payment status in a source-to-target table. A small language difference can affect money or trust, so test each label where it appears on the live journey.

Product safety and instruction sequencing

English: “Disconnect the device from the power supply before cleaning. Do not immerse the adapter in water.”

Indonesian: Putuskan sambungan perangkat dari sumber listrik sebelum membersihkannya. Jangan merendam adaptor di dalam air.

The sequence and prohibition remain clear. If the original includes a cooling period or maximum temperature, keep it in the same logical relationship to the action. Do not add new technical procedures just because they seem prudent.

For safety materials, specialist review should inspect warnings, product part names, units, minimum and maximum values, conditions and signs. Ordinary grammar proofreading cannot establish that an instruction is technically safe.

Education: translate what students must demonstrate

An English worksheet might ask students to “describe,” “explain,” “compare,” “justify,” “evaluate” or “calculate.” Indonesian deskripsikan, jelaskan, bandingkan, berikan alasan, evaluasi and hitung can serve different tasks in suitable contexts. The curriculum and specific question determine the best form.

A student asked to explain a mathematical method should not be told merely to provide a number. A science question asking for an inference should not become a request for observation alone. A literature prompt asking for evidence should still require textual support.

Keep symbols, diagrams, units and official syllabus references intact. The goal is the same learning outcome in another language, not a superficially similar exercise that tests a different skill.

Research: association is not causation

English: “The results suggest an association, but they do not establish causation.”

Indonesian: Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kemungkinan adanya hubungan, tetapi tidak membuktikan adanya hubungan sebab akibat. This preserves a tentative association and does not falsely claim causal proof.

A translation that uses membuktikan for a source that merely says “suggests” exaggerates evidence. Similar problems arise with “statistically significant,” “estimated,” “approximately,” “preliminary,” “may improve” and “consistent with.” Domain knowledge is often necessary to choose the correct sense.

Check sample counts, confidence intervals, graph axes, references and quotations as part of the translated document. An accurate paragraph must agree with its data and must not strengthen the author’s conclusion.

False friends and deceptive familiar words

Related Malay and Indonesian vocabulary can mislead, but English-derived loanwords can also shift meaning. Indonesian aktual can refer to something current or topical in some usage and should not automatically replace every English “actual” meaning “real.” Realistis means realistic, but English “realize” often needs a different phrase depending on its sense.

English “application” can mean a software app, a formal request or application of a method. Indonesian aplikasi commonly refers to software or use/application in certain contexts, while permohonan or lamaran may fit a formal or employment application. Choose the specific event, not the first familiar cognate.

Likewise, “claim” may be an insurance claim or a research assertion; “charge” may be an electrical process, a fee or a legal accusation. Write the intended sense in simple English before choosing a term. Similar spelling is not evidence of equivalent meaning.

Idioms: explain the function rather than translate a picture

“Break the ice” commonly means reducing social awkwardness. A literal translation about physical ice would be misleading unless the source really describes frozen water. In a meeting context, a natural Indonesian phrase might describe mencairkan suasana, easing the atmosphere.

“Let’s touch base tomorrow” generally means checking in briefly. Mari kita berbicara lagi besok may work in a friendly situation, but a professional message should match whether the sender is proposing a conversation or promising to contact someone. Do not turn a proposal into a guaranteed phone call.

Advertising slogans may permit cultural adaptation, yet factual commitments must stay intact. A product that “may help reduce noise” cannot be made to “eliminate all noise” merely to sound more convincing. Meaning and creative tone must be managed separately.

AI English-to-Indonesian translation: set the target and constraints

AI translation can make a useful first draft, but it may choose unexpected colloquial forms, borrow Malay terms, confuse kami and kita, reverse upload and download or change a conditional rule. Provide the target audience and domain before asking it to translate.

A useful prompt is: “Translate into clear standard Indonesian for adult readers in Indonesia. Use consistent respectful address. Preserve all dates, figures, currency codes, permissions, obligations, negatives and source ambiguity. Distinguish kami and kita accurately. Flag uncertain institutional terminology instead of guessing.”

Then request a bilingual difference audit rather than another unqualified rewrite. Compare who acts, what is required, whether a status is completed, what a number means and whether a term matches the correct institution. A second machine output may repeat the same error; human review is needed for high-stakes work.

Three passes for publication-quality Indonesian

Pass one: meaning fidelity. Align source and target clauses. Check agency, scope, amounts, conditions, status, quantifiers and named entities. If the reader might make a different decision, correct that first.

Pass two: idiomatic standard Indonesian. Hide the English. Check affixes, yang clauses, pronouns, register, spelling, terminology and whether sentences are natural without imported English syntax. Verify uncertain forms in KBBI Daring.

Pass three: mechanical delivery. Test punctuation and spelling with the EYD V portal, then check URLs, forms, numbers, fonts, tables and mobile layout. Content is not operationally correct until it displays and works as intended.

Maintain a correction log with the source phrase, original translation, approved translation and why it changed. Over time, recurring issues can become targeted quality rules that improve future work.

Twelve useful English-to-Indonesian examples

1. “Thank you.” Terima kasih. A straightforward expression in many registers.

2. “Please wait here.” Silakan tunggu di sini. The preposition di is separate from the location word.

3. “I am reading a report.” Saya sedang membaca laporan. The action is ongoing.

4. “We have received your form.” Kami telah menerima formulir Anda. The organization excludes the customer from the receiving group.

5. “Let us work together.” Mari kita bekerja sama. The group includes the reader.

6. “The document was sent yesterday.” Dokumen itu dikirim kemarin. The passive verb uses attached di-.

7. “The application is under review.” Permohonan sedang ditinjau. This does not state that it has been approved.

8. “Only members may enter.” Hanya anggota yang boleh masuk. The restriction remains explicit.

9. “Not everyone passed.” Tidak semua orang lulus. This is different from nobody passing.

10. “You do not need to register again.” Anda tidak perlu mendaftar lagi. This removes a requirement but does not forbid registration.

11. “The results may change.” Hasilnya mungkin berubah. The result is uncertain.

12. “Upload the file before Friday.” Unggah berkas tersebut sebelum hari Jumat. This example deliberately means before Friday, which differs from “by Friday”; check the source cutoff before choosing either phrase.

For each example, ask which distinction protects accuracy: status, pronoun inclusion, prefix spelling, probability, condition or transfer direction. Understanding the reason makes future translations faster than memorizing a phrase without context.

Six plausible mistranslations that change the message

Case A — inclusion error. If a company says “We received your request,” kita may incorrectly include the customer as the receiving organization. Kami telah menerima permohonan Anda preserves the ordinary exclusive relationship.

Case B — permission becomes duty. “You may submit another document” is not Anda harus mengirim dokumen lain. The latter makes submission mandatory. Anda boleh mengirim dokumen tambahan preserves an option in a suitable context.

Case C — receipt becomes approval. Permohonan disetujui asserts approval, whereas Permohonan telah diterima states receipt in an appropriate context. Check the actual institutional workflow before selecting the final word.

Case D — not yet becomes never. “The package has not arrived yet” can be Paketnya belum tiba. It does not justify a statement that the package will never arrive.

Case E — a maximum becomes a minimum. Maksimal lima item limits the count to five; minimal lima item requires at least five. Both can be grammatical, and only one fits a given English source.

Case F — association becomes proof. A source saying a study “suggests a link” should not be translated as having established causation. Preserve the uncertainty and the author’s evidential limits.

A reviewer should classify these as substantive meaning errors, not merely issues of tone or spelling. Each could change what a reader does or believes.

Frequently asked questions about English-to-Indonesian translation

Is Bahasa Indonesia the same as Bahasa Melayu? They are closely related, but official standards, vocabulary and familiar everyday expressions differ. Use the language variety requested and localize for the intended country.

Does Indonesian have verb tenses like English? Not through the same kinds of conjugation. Time and event status are commonly expressed through context and words such as sudah, sedang, belum and akan.

When do I use kami versus kita? Use kami for a speaker’s group that excludes the addressee and kita for a group including the addressee in their ordinary uses.

What is the difference between tidak and bukan? They serve different negative constructions, including negation of verbs/adjectives versus noun identification in many contexts. The whole phrase determines the correct form.

Where can I check official spelling? Use the official EYD V guide, especially for affixes, prepositions and punctuation.

Where can I check meanings and terminology? The official KBBI Daring is a useful starting point; domain-specific institutions may have approved terminology beyond the dictionary.

Can AI automatically translate an Indonesian website? It can produce a draft, but the site still needs bilingual review of forms, actions, policy clauses, payment states, date formatting and the actual user journey.

What should I review first when time is short? Obligations, negatives, conditions, numerical limits, dates, money, administrative status and document identity, followed by style and presentation.

Make the Indonesian reader’s decision your final test

A successful English-to-Indonesian translation lets someone understand the same facts, constraints and next actions as the English reader. It uses natural Bahasa Indonesia, the correct inclusive or exclusive pronouns, accurate affixes and clear event status without inventing a stronger promise or changing a numerical value.

For the wider method, read Master Art of Translation, then consult KBBI Daring and the EYD V spelling guide for Indonesian usage. Accuracy becomes faster when each translation decision follows a consistent, meaning-first process.
