Chapter contents · Practise and explain your choices · Vocabulary articles
These 20 vocabulary words help children aged about 6–8 describe repeating patterns, compare objects and sort by a chosen feature. Begin with a simple row of circles and triangles. The learning goal is to explain the rule and use it, rather than only guess a missing picture. An adult can read the definitions aloud while the child points, draws or moves cards.
The four editions use the same word numbers and the same original story. Learn the idea in a familiar language first, then follow a matching word link to English, Mandarin, Hindi or Russian. The example can stay the same while the language changes. Children do not need to learn every translation at once or read four scripts independently.
The activities can be completed with drawings on paper. Large picture cards are optional. Colour is never the only clue: the main examples use shape names and numbered positions. Ages 6–8 are a flexible guide, not a school requirement. Use fewer words or more spoken support when that helps a learner explain one clear connection.
Chapter contents
1–4 · Understand patterns and sorting
5–8 · Pairs, groups and features: words 11–15
9–12 · A flexible seven-day learning plan
Start by asking the child to copy a short row, then ask what repeats. These are different steps. A learner may copy six pictures correctly while treating each position as a separate memory task. Point to circle–triangle as a block, cover and uncover whole blocks, and ask the learner to rebuild the row. The word unit gives a name to that useful chunk.
Keep sorting and sequencing distinct. Sorting circles into one group and triangles into another uses membership. Building circle–triangle repeatedly uses order. The same cards can support both activities, but success at one does not automatically explain the other. Ask ‘Why does this belong here?’ for sorting and ‘Which block repeats?’ for a repeating row.
Translations follow the meaning used in the activity. Pattern here means a describable arrangement, not a sewing template. Unit is the repeating block, not a centimetre. Rule tells how to arrange or group, not how to behave. The Hindi आकार is used for size in the big-or-small sense, while आकृति names shape; everyday usage can be broader, so read the example as well as the label.
Mandarin pinyin includes tone marks. Roman guides for Hindi and Russian are approximate reading prompts, not complete pronunciation lessons. Russian stress marks in headings support learning and are normally omitted in everyday writing. Whole sentences change word forms and order: круг becomes круга in some phrases, for example. Compare the complete example instead of swapping single words into an English sentence.
Use the table as a map. Find one familiar idea, cover one language column and recall that expression. Reopen it to check, then use a whole example. If the child can show the right block but cannot recall its translated name, give the word cue. If the block itself is uncertain, keep the familiar language and work with the shapes first.
1. pattern · 规律
English: pattern
An arrangement with a rule we can describe. This lesson focuses on repeating patterns, where a block occurs again in the same order. Other kinds of patterns also exist.
Our pattern repeats circle, triangle, circle, triangle.
Draw circle, triangle three times. Name the rule, then point to each complete repeat. A decorated row is not enough: explain the relationship you are using.
2. repeat · 重复
English: repeat
To do or show something again. When repeating a pattern block, keep the items inside the block in their stated order; repeating the same collection in any order is different.
We repeat the two-shape block three times.
Repeat a two-item block without reversing the items inside it. Compare your copy with the starting block, and say which item comes first in both.
3. unit · 重复单元
English: unit
The block being repeated. In these activities, find the smallest complete block that produces the stated repeating pattern. Unit here is not a measuring unit such as a centimetre.
The unit is circle, triangle—not one circle alone.
Bracket circle–triangle in the main row three times. Explain why a single circle cannot generate the stated AB row by itself. A larger block can repeat too, but we seek the shortest one.
4. rule · 规则
English: rule
A statement that tells how to make an arrangement or choose a group. A clear rule lets someone else check the choice. Here it is a mathematical instruction, not a rule about good behaviour.
Our sorting rule is ‘Put circles in this group’.
Tell a partner a sorting rule before showing the groups. Ask them to place one new card, then explain whether the card satisfies the condition you stated.
5. next · 下一个
English: next
Coming immediately after the current item in the chosen order. To choose the next pattern item, use the stated rule rather than only copying the last visible item.
With the rule ‘repeat circle, triangle’, the next item after position 6 is a circle.
Use the stated AB rule to choose position 7 after the six-position main row. Explain the restart of the unit instead of saying ‘I just know’.
6. before · 在……之前
English: before
Earlier in the chosen sequence. Here before describes a position in a numbered row, not necessarily a place physically in front of someone. ‘Immediately before’ means the neighbouring earlier position.
Position 3 comes immediately before position 4.
Point to the position immediately before 4, then to any position before 4. Explain why the second instruction allows more than one numbered position.
7. after · 在……之后
English: after
Later in the chosen sequence. After alone can refer to any later position; immediately after identifies the next neighbouring one. Say which meaning you need when asking a child to point.
Position 5 comes immediately after position 4.
Point to the position immediately after 4, then to a later position that is not its immediate neighbour. Keep the numbered reading order fixed.
8. same · 相同
English: same
Alike in the feature we are comparing. Two cards can have the same shape but different colours. Naming the feature avoids claiming that every detail is identical.
These cards have the same shape, although their colours differ.
Choose two circles with different colours. Complete ‘They are the same in ___ and different in ___’. Name features rather than claiming every detail matches.
9. different · 不同
English: different
Not the same in a stated feature. A difference in size does not automatically mean a difference in shape or colour. Explain which feature changes and which stays the same.
The circles are different in size but the same in shape.
Draw a large circle and a small circle. Describe their difference in size, then describe what remains the same. A difference in one feature need not change all features.
10. match · 匹配
English: match
To fit the chosen condition or agree in a chosen feature. Matching by colour is different from matching by shape; two items need not be identical in every way to match.
The two circles match by shape, even though one is larger.
Choose a red circle and a red triangle. Decide whether they match by colour and whether they match by shape. Give a separate answer for each condition.
11. pair · 一对
English: pair
A set of two items considered together. A pair has two members, but the members do not always have to match. Add a rule if you want a matching pair.
We chose a pair of cards: one circle and one triangle.

Русский: при́знак (priznak)
Свойство для описания или сравнения: цвет, форма, размер. Выберите нужный признак до решения о совпадении.
В этой сортировке выбран признак формы.
Name the feature before sorting. Try shape once, then start a new task using colour. Keep the two rules separate so a changed choice can be explained.
15. colour · 颜色
English: colour
A feature such as red, blue or yellow. Colour can support sorting, but this lesson’s main pattern also has shape names so colour is not the only way to recognise it.
The red circle and red triangle match by colour.

Use colour names alongside shapes or written labels. If two colours are hard to distinguish, keep the rule available through words or a different feature rather than guessing.
16. shape · 形状
English: shape
The form or outline of something. In these cards, circle and triangle name shapes. Changing a card’s colour does not by itself change the shape drawn on it.
The triangle keeps its shape when we draw it in another colour.
Redraw a triangle in another colour. Explain which feature changed and which did not. Keep the comparison focused on the drawn shape rather than the paper’s shape.
17. size · 大小
English: size

हमने दो वृत्तों के आकार की तुलना की।
Русский: разме́р (razmer)
Насколько объект большой или маленький в выбранном сравнении. Форма и размер — разные признаки. Уточните объекты или измерение.
Мы сравнили размеры двух кругов.
Choose two drawn circles, one clearly larger than the other. State the comparison: ‘This circle is larger than that circle.’ Avoid calling an item simply ‘large’ without context.
18. order · 顺序
English: order
The arrangement of items in a sequence. The same collection can have a different order. Here order is a noun, not an instruction to buy something or command someone.
The order changed, although the number of each shape stayed the same.
Rearrange the three circles and three triangles into circles first, then triangles. Compare with the main AB row. Counts stay the same while order changes.
19. compare · 比较
English: compare
To look for similarities and differences. A useful comparison names the feature being checked. ‘Same shape, different size’ says more than simply ‘These are different’.
We compare the rows by order as well as by the shapes they contain.
Compare the AB row with the separately supplied AAB row. State each rule and count the members in its shortest repeating block before discussing what comes next.
20. explain · 解释
English: explain
To make your thinking clear by giving a reason or showing how something works. Pointing to a block, grouping cards or using a short sentence can all help explain a pattern.
I explain my choice by pointing to the repeating unit.
Use ‘I chose this because…’ and point to the rule or unit that supports your choice. A short reason with a clear gesture is enough to begin.
This original teaching story uses drawings and picture cards. It is fiction for learning, not a report of a classroom test. The main row has six numbered positions and a stated rule: repeat circle, triangle. Read from position 1 to position 6. The numbers specify the order; a child’s physical position around the table should not silently reverse it.
The comparison table includes a second row with a different stated rule. Its two-circle, one-triangle block needs four circles and two triangles for six positions; it is a separate example. A visible finite row alone does not force one possible continuation. The questions below ask children to continue using the particular rule provided, and to say that rule aloud.
| Stated rule | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | Shortest unit | Position 7 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Repeat circle, triangle | circle | triangle | circle | triangle | circle | triangle | circle · triangle | circle |
| Repeat circle, circle, triangle | circle | circle | triangle | circle | circle | triangle | circle · circle · triangle | circle |
English · The six-card row
Nila and Ari drew six numbered places on a long sheet. Their rule was ‘Repeat circle, triangle’. Nila placed a circle at position 1, a triangle at 2, and continued until the six places were full. Ari read the row from 1 to 6. Then he put a small mark after each circle–triangle block. There were three complete repeats.
‘Which shape comes next under our rule?’ Nila asked. Ari first looked only at the final triangle. Then he pointed back to the whole unit. ‘A circle starts the block again,’ he explained. He did not need to guess from the last picture alone.
They chose a pair of cards from positions 1 and 2. It was a circle and a triangle: a pair, though not a matching pair by shape. Next Nila showed a large circle and a small circle drawn in different colours. Ari said, ‘They match by shape, but their sizes and colours are different.’ He named the feature instead of calling the cards identical.
For their next task, they sorted the main row into a circle group and a triangle group. Each had three members. All six cards were still present, but the alternating order had gone. Nila tried putting all circles first and all triangles after them. ‘Same numbers of shapes, different order,’ said Ari.
They used their recorded rule to rebuild circle–triangle three times. On another sheet they tried a different rule: repeat circle, circle, triangle. That example needed four circles and two triangles for six positions. The children kept it separate from their first set.
Their final note said: ‘Name the feature when sorting. Name the unit when repeating. Explain the rule before deciding what comes next.’
Try each discussion task before checking the answer guide. A child can explain by pointing to a block, marking a feature or speaking in a familiar language. Several answers depend on a stated condition, so include that condition in the explanation. A different answer can be worth discussing if it uses a different explicit rule; it does not satisfy the original instruction unless that rule is allowed.
1. Using the stated circle–triangle rule, what is position 7 after the main six-item row? Explain.
2. What is the shortest complete repeating unit in the main AB example?
3. Which numbered position comes immediately before 4? Which comes immediately after 4?
4. Can two cards have the same shape and different colours? Give an example.
5. Do a red circle and a red triangle match by colour? Do they match by shape?
6. Is a circle and a triangle a pair, even though their shapes do not match?
7. After sorting the main six cards by shape, how many belong to each group? Is the original order preserved automatically?
8. In the separate AAB example, what repeats and what appears at position 7?
9. If circles and triangles are replaced with clap and tap while keeping AB, what stays the same?
10. What makes ‘This goes here’ a clearer explanation?
Answer guide
- A circle. Positions 1–6 contain three complete circle–triangle blocks, so position 7 begins the next block. This answer uses the supplied rule; a finite row without a rule can allow other continuations.
- Circle, triangle. One circle alone cannot produce the triangle positions under repetition. Circle–triangle–circle–triangle is a larger repeatable block, but it is not the shortest one asked for here.
- Position 3 before, position 5 after. Use the numbered order rather than whichever side of the table a person occupies. Without ‘immediately’, other earlier or later positions could also fit.
- Yes: a red circle and a blue circle. Their shape matches while colour differs. The chosen feature determines the comparison; ‘same shape’ is not a claim that all details are identical.
- They match by colour, because both are red. They do not match by shape, because one is a circle and the other a triangle. Give separate answers for the two conditions.
- Yes. Pair means two items considered together. A matching pair adds a further condition. A three-card circle group is a group but is not a pair.
- Three circles and three triangles. The cards and counts are preserved, but putting them into groups does not automatically retain the alternating sequence. Use the recorded rule to rebuild it.
- Circle, circle, triangle is the three-item unit. Six positions contain two complete units; position 7 is a circle beginning the next unit. This example uses four circles and two triangles, not the main row’s counts.
- The repeating relationship stays AB, even though the objects or actions change. The learner can also use two labelled pictures or spoken words instead of sounds or movement.
- Add the chosen feature or rule: ‘This is a circle, so it belongs in the circle group,’ or ‘A circle starts the next AB unit.’ Pointing to the relevant group or block supports the reason.
Use short sessions that fit the child. The seven-day plan is a possible sequence, not a deadline or promise. Keep the example fixed when introducing a new language. Later, keep the language fixed while changing the shapes or the block length. Changing language, layout and rule together makes it harder to see which idea needs more help.
| Day | Words or focus | Activity | What to notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–5 | Copy the AB row and mark whole units. | Name the supplied rule before continuing. |
| 2 | 6–10 | Compare positions and chosen features. | Separate same shape from same colour. |
| 3 | 11–15 | Make pairs and sort by one stated feature. | Do not silently change the grouping rule. |
| 4 | 16–20 | Change shape, size or order one at a time. | Explain what changed and what stayed the same. |
| 5 | Story | Retell the sorting and rebuilding steps. | Counts and order are different information. |
| 6 | Two selected words | Use matching links to try another language. | Keep the mathematical example unchanged. |
| 7 | A fresh example | Mark a unit, continue and explain a grouping. | Choose one useful next step. |
CHAPTER 10 OF 12 · Support and move forward
10. Support a sticking point; extend a rule
If the child can extend a row but cannot name its block, ask them to place a mark after each complete repeat. Compare the marked groups. Use one whole block as a cue, then remove it and rebuild. If the child can show the block but struggles with a word, keep the successful arrangement and offer a sentence beginning such as ‘The unit is…’.
If sorting choices keep changing, write or say one feature first. For ‘circles here, triangles there’, colour and size are not the sorting features. Test the rule on one new card. A child may offer another useful grouping; ask them to name its rule and start a new sort instead of silently mixing two tasks. Some other grouping tasks allow overlapping membership, but these two named-shape groups are kept separate.
For extension, transfer a known rule to new objects. Circle–triangle can become clap–tap or two different large pictures, provided the learner keeps the AB relationship. Offer a visual or spoken response instead of requiring movement or sound. Then try AAB as a genuinely different block. Explain what changes in the rule rather than simply adding more items.
CHAPTER 11 OF 12 · Support and move forward
11. Check understanding with a new example
Use a fresh row with a supplied rule. Ask the child to mark one complete unit, continue it, and explain one sorting choice using a named feature. Record the actual response: ‘Grouped by shape despite different colours’ identifies a connection more clearly than ‘knows patterns’. Notice whether the child needs help with the idea, the language or following the numbered order.
Next change only one demand: use a second language, remove a picture cue or ask for an extra reason. A hesitant translation should not cancel a correct mathematical explanation. Accurate pointing is progress for a beginner; a later goal is applying the same relationship to an unfamiliar example. Let the next task address the specific connection that needs practice.

12. Questions, sources and next reading
Must children learn all four languages at once?
No. Understand one idea in a familiar language, then add one new expression if helpful. The matching numbers keep the meaning connected without requiring equal fluency in all four languages.
Is ages 6–8 a strict requirement?
No. The age range guides the examples. A younger child can point to a repeated block; an older beginner can explain a rule and compare translations. Adjust the reading and number of words to the learner.
Is there always only one possible next item?
Not from a finite row alone. Different rules can fit the visible start. These activities supply a specific repeating rule, so the answer should follow that rule. Ask the child to name the rule supporting the continuation.
Is the repeating unit always two items?
No. AB has two items in its shortest block here; AAB has three. Other patterns can use other block lengths. A longer repeated block may also work, so specify when you want the shortest complete one.
Does same mean identical in every way?
Only if that is what you explicitly mean. In a comparison, name the feature: same shape can coexist with different colours or sizes. Matching by one feature does not automatically require a match by another.
Is sorting the same as arranging a repeating pattern?
No. Sorting uses a membership rule; a repeating row uses order. The main six cards can be grouped into three circles and three triangles, then rebuilt using the AB rule. Counts alone do not preserve sequence.
Do children need to distinguish colours for the main task?
No. The main examples use named shapes and numbered positions. Colour is a separate optional comparison. Provide written labels, spoken descriptions or another distinguishable feature when helpful.
How do we check understanding without requiring a long written answer?
Ask the child to show a whole unit, continue a row under a supplied rule, and place a new card in a group while giving a short reason. A clear gesture plus a brief explanation can reveal the connection.
