These 20 words help children read a task, follow its order and explain a correction. Ages 7–9 is a flexible guide. Start with first, next, last, once and repeat. Later add undo and revise. The activity can be spoken, imagined or drawn; it needs no app or special equipment.
Every numbered word card includes English, Mandarin, Hindi and Russian. Begin with a familiar language for meaning, then open the same numbered card in another edition. Learning all four at once is optional. A clear explanation in one language helps a learner connect the next language to an understood action.
Mandarin uses simplified characters and tone-marked pinyin. Hindi and Russian Roman forms are approximate reading prompts, not exact pronunciation guides. Russian stress marks are learning aids usually omitted in everyday writing. “Correct” is an action word here, meaning repair; “last” means at the end of a named task. “First” and “before” can share words in translation, but before names a relationship between actions. Sentences show the difference.

CHAPTER 1 OF 12 · Understand the ideas
1. Understand the instruction before starting
An instruction needs a starting point, an action and a clear order. A repeated group also needs a clear boundary and count. Our original drawing task starts with a blank row. Do this pair three times in total: add one circle, then one triangle. After all three pairs are complete, add one square once. Every new shape goes at the end of the row.
Worked correction
Worked correction: “I drew a circle, triangle and square three times, so I followed the instruction.” Keep the correct work: the three circles and three triangles may be in the right relative order. Find the extra action inside the repeated group. The instruction repeats only circle then triangle. Moving the square action outside that group gives three pairs and one final square: 3 + 3 + 1 = 7 shapes, rather than three groups of three, which make 9.
The instruction says three times in total. We do not first draw one pair and then add three more unless the task explicitly asks for that. Three times in total gives three pairs; once followed by three more gives four pairs. If everyday wording leaves that unclear, ask or rewrite it before checking someone’s answer.
Read across the four language columns, then use the complete sentence. A translation can be a phrase. The same word can have another use elsewhere: an instruction step is not a walking step here, and correct on card 17 is a verb. Before and after always refer to something; name that reference instead of leaving the learner to guess.
A sequence has more information than its total. Circle then triangle and triangle then circle each contain two shapes, but their order differs. A count of seven can therefore be a useful check without proving that the whole drawing follows the instruction. Check the repeated pair, number of pairs and final square as well as the total.

This is an original fictional drawing story. The table records the intended steps from an empty row. Each pair adds one circle and one triangle in that order. The final square is a separate action after the third pair. The table describes a sequence; it is not a claim about a particular programming language or a real classroom result.
To pause after pair two, keep the four shapes already drawn and mark “two pairs complete”. Continue with pair three, then add the final square. Pausing does not mean clearing the row or returning to pair one. To restart the whole task, explicitly choose a blank row again. Naming the point reached prevents an accidental extra repetition.
| Stage completed | Shapes added in that stage | Total shapes so far |
|---|---|---|
| Pair 1 | circle, triangle | 2 |
| Pair 2 | circle, triangle | 4 |
| Pair 3 | circle, triangle | 6 |
| Final action | square | 7 |
English · The Square at the End
Ada and Ravi read an original drawing task. They start with a blank row. The instruction says: “Do this pair three times in total: add a circle, then a triangle. After all three pairs, add one square once.” Each new shape belongs at the end of the row. Ada says the pair aloud while Ravi points to the final sentence.
Ravi’s first attempt repeats circle, triangle and square three times. He has three circles, three triangles and three squares: nine shapes. Ada notices that some work is correct. The circles and triangles keep their order, and there are three of each. They look for the action that entered the repeated group by mistake.
“The square belongs after all three pairs,” Ravi explains. “I put it inside every group.” They keep the first attempt and draw a fresh row. Pair one adds two shapes. Pair two brings the total to four. Pair three brings it to six. Only then do they add one square, making seven.
Ada asks for a pause after the second pair in another rehearsal. They mark “two pairs complete” beside four shapes. When they continue, Ravi starts pair three. He does not erase the row or begin pair one again. The saved place tells him which action is next.
They discuss the phrase “three more times”. If they first did one pair and then three more, they would have four pairs. That is a different instruction from three times in total. They revise the wording so the intended count is clear before checking another person’s work.
Finally they try a smaller task: circle then triangle twice in total, followed by one square. Ravi counts five shapes, but Ada also checks their order. A row with triangle first in each pair would have the same five shapes and still miss this instruction. They finish by explaining both checks: the counts and the sequence.
Discuss one question at a time. Ask the learner to point to the repeated group and the final action. Answers may be spoken, drawn or given first in a familiar language. Keep the first attempt when possible, then compare it with the corrected version so the changed step is visible.
1. What is repeated in the main task?
2. When is the square added?
3. How many circles, triangles and squares are required?
4. Why does repeating circle, triangle, square three times give the wrong result?
5. Where do we continue after pausing at two complete pairs?
6. Is three times in total the same as once and then three more?
7. Can a correct total prove the order is correct?
8. Does undo always correct the whole task?
9. What does the fresh twice-in-total task produce?
10. What useful question can clarify an unclear instruction?
Discussion guide
- The pair “circle, then triangle”, three times in total.
- Once, after all three complete pairs.
- Three circles, three triangles and one square: seven shapes altogether.
- It puts the final square inside the repeated group, giving three squares and nine shapes.
- At pair three, keeping the four shapes already made.
- No. They give three pairs and four pairs respectively.
- No. Check the pair order and the final action too.
- No. Reversing the last change may leave earlier mistakes; check the whole sequence.
- Circle, triangle, circle, triangle, square: five shapes.
- Ask what repeats, how many times in total, and what happens after the group ends.
Use five to ten calm minutes per visit, with pauses or repeated days when useful. One accurately explained pair is a good start. A learner may understand the sequence in a familiar language before they can fluently explain it in another. Add language gradually rather than increasing the number of actions at the same time.
| Day | Words | Small activity | What to notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–5 | Name the task, its steps and the first pair. | Read the whole instruction. |
| 2 | 6–10 | Explain what repeats and what happens once. | State the count in total. |
| 3 | 11–15 | Pause after two pairs and continue correctly. | Keep the current place. |
| 4 | 16–20 | Locate the square error and explain a repair. | Undo may reverse only one change. |
| 5 | 1–20 | Retell the shared story in a familiar language. | Preserve the correct part of an attempt. |
| 6 | Choose 5 | Open matching word numbers in a second language. | Connect meanings before memorising sounds. |
| 7 | Review | Compare fresh rows C and D. | Same counts can have different order. |
If a square appears after every pair, do not discard the correct circles and triangles in the explanation. Name the repeated group aloud: “circle, then triangle”. Name its boundary: “three times in total”. Then read the separate final line: “after all three pairs, one square once”. Compare the nine-shape attempt with a fresh seven-shape row, locating where the extra squares came from.
If the learner restarts after a pause, ask how many pairs were complete before pausing. Mark that state and name the next unfinished step. If undo is treated as a complete correction, check what it actually reverses: undoing the last change may leave an earlier mistake untouched. Revise wording when it is unclear; a different interpretation of an ambiguous instruction is not automatically a learner’s failure.
This is practice in understanding a task and asking useful questions. A child can ask what repeats, how many times and what “last” refers to. Drawings, oral rehearsal and placing a finger beside the current instruction can reduce the amount held in memory. Needing a prompt is normal support, not a diagnosis of ability.
Progress means explaining the group, its count and the final action without losing the current place. “The pair happens three times, but the square happens once afterwards” shows understanding beyond remembering a total. A learner who can locate a mistake and explain a repair has useful control of the sequence, even with a prompt.
Fresh task: start with a blank row. Add circle then triangle twice in total, then one square once. The result has five shapes: two circles, two triangles and one final square. Compare with a row that repeats triangle then circle twice, then square. Both rows have five shapes and the same counts, but only the first matches the new instruction’s order. A correct total alone cannot settle the comparison.
| Row | Sequence from the blank start | Total | Matches the new instruction? |
|---|---|---|---|
| C | circle, triangle, circle, triangle, square | 5 | Yes |
| D | triangle, circle, triangle, circle, square | 5 | No |
Must we learn all four languages at once?
No. Understand the action in one familiar language and add a second language when ready. The links keep the same word number.
Is this a computer programming lesson?
It introduces ordered instructions and repetition through language and drawing. No app or programming language is needed.
Does repeat three times mean three extra times?
Our task explicitly says three times in total. “Three more” after one completed pair would mean four pairs. Clarify everyday wording before judging the result.
Why is the square outside the repeated group?
Because the instruction places it after all three pairs and asks for it once. A different instruction could ask for squares inside each group.
Is a pause the same as restarting?
No. A pause keeps the place reached. Restarting this task means explicitly choosing a blank row again.
Are matching shape counts enough?
No. Check order as well. Circle then triangle differs from triangle then circle despite identical counts.
What if the wording is unclear?
Ask what the instruction means and revise it together. State the starting point, repeated group, total count and final action.
What should we do after a mistake?
Preserve correct work, identify the changed step, model one repair and try a fresh task. One attempt does not diagnose a child’s ability.
