Name the whole, check equal parts and explain what the fraction counts.
Chapter index · Worked correction · Discussion and checking · Vocabulary articles
These 20 words help children connect a named whole, equal parts and fraction notation. Ages 8–10 is a flexible guide. Begin with whole, part, equal, half and quarter. Add numerator and denominator after the learner can describe the idea in their own words. Short visits are enough.
Every numbered card contains English, Mandarin, Hindi and Russian. Read a familiar language for understanding, then follow the same word number into another edition. Learning all four at once is optional. An accurate reason in a familiar language is a useful foundation for a new language sentence.
Mandarin uses simplified characters and pinyin with tones. Hindi and Russian Roman forms are approximate reading prompts. Russian stress marks are learning aids normally omitted in everyday writing. Mandarin names 3/4 as 四分之三, stating the denominator before the numerator; the written digits still mean three quarters. Hindi अंश and हर mean numerator and denominator here. Hindi आकार and आकृति are used for size and shape respectively in this lesson; everyday usage can overlap.

A fraction names a number relative to a unit. In our area model the unit is the complete region we call one whole. First identify that region, then check how it is divided. Equal parts must have the same area in this model. Their outlines do not have to look identical. The lesson uses supplied counts of equal unit squares, not measurements of the screen.
Worked correction
Worked correction: “Four is bigger than two, so a quarter is bigger than a half.” Keep the correct comparison of whole numbers: 4 is greater than 2. Now ask what those numbers count. They count equal parts of the same whole. Our whole has area 12 square units: two equal parts have area 6 each; four equal parts have area 3 each. One quarter is therefore smaller than one half. More parts does not mean more area in each part.
Equal parts are a condition, not a decoration. A region split into areas 2, 3, 3 and 4 square units has four pieces totalling 12, but those pieces are not all quarters. The piece of area 3 happens to be one quarter of the total area; the unequal four-piece partition does not justify calling every piece a quarter. Name the quantity, not just the piece count.
Read across each word row, then use the complete sentence. In this lesson the numerator counts selected equal parts and the denominator counts all equal parts in one whole, including the selected ones. For 3/4, selecting three of four equal parts leaves one unselected part, but the denominator remains 4, not 1.
Fraction numbers and physical amounts need a careful distinction. As numbers, 1/2 is greater than 1/4. To compare areas taken from actual regions, name the wholes too: half of a small region can have less area than a quarter of a larger region. Our opening comparison keeps the whole area the same. Later we deliberately change it to practise this distinction.

This original fictional story uses two complete regions, A and B, each with area 12 square units. Every unit square is the same size throughout the lesson. The regions are completely covered without gaps or overlaps. A is partitioned into two equal-area parts of 6; B into four equal-area parts of 3. The table describes areas, not a scale drawing.
For a third model of the same whole, three equal-area parts would each have area 4, giving thirds. Combining two non-overlapping quarters of B gives 3 + 3 = 6 square units, equal to a half of a 12-square-unit whole. The same area can therefore be named 2/4 and 1/2. Adding selected quarters changes how many quarters are selected, not how many quarters make the whole.
| Region | Whole area (square units) | Equal parts in whole | Area per part (square units) | One part as a fraction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 12 | 2 | 6 | 1/2 |
| B | 12 | 4 | 3 | 1/4 |
English · More Parts, Smaller Pieces
Mira and Ivo read an invented record about two complete regions. Both A and B have area twelve square units. All the unit squares are the same size, and there are no gaps or overlaps. A has two equal-area parts. B has four. Before reading the part areas, Ivo predicts, “Four is bigger than two, so B’s quarter must be bigger than A’s half.” Mira writes his prediction down.
They check A. Its twelve square units are divided equally between two parts, so each has area six. In B the same total area is divided equally among four parts, each with area three. “My comparison of four and two was right,” Ivo says, “but I used it for the wrong thing. Those numbers count parts, not the area in one part.”
Mira selects one of B’s four equal parts. They call it 1/4, one quarter. Then she selects a second quarter without counting any area twice. Together the two parts cover six square units, just like a half of A. They write 2/4 = 1/2 for these equal-sized wholes.
Ivo selects a third quarter of B and writes 3/1 because one part remains unselected. Mira asks what the denominator counts. They count every part in B: three selected and one unselected make four. The correct fraction is 3/4. The numerator counts three selected parts; the denominator counts all four equal parts in the whole.
A new record shows four unequal pieces with areas two, three, three and four. They total twelve, but Ivo checks before naming them. “Four pieces alone do not make every piece a quarter,” he explains. “We need equal areas for that model.”
Finally they compare different wholes: half of an eight-square-unit region has area four; a quarter of a twenty-square-unit region has area five. Mira adds a note: “Name the whole each time.” They keep both corrections beside their first attempts so they can explain which step changed.
Use one question at a time. Ask for the whole, the quantity being compared and a reason. Learners can speak, draw or use a familiar language first. The answer guide supports checking; there is no race to say a mathematical word before understanding it.
1. What is the area of each whole, A and B?
2. What is one half of A?
3. What is one quarter of B?
4. Why does the larger denominator give the smaller unit fraction here?
5. What do two quarters of B combine to make?
6. What does denominator 4 count in 3/4?
7. Are four pieces with areas 2, 3, 3 and 4 all quarters?
8. Must equal-area parts have identical shapes?
9. Which has more area: half of C’s 8 or a quarter of D’s 20?
10. Does that change the numerical fact that 1/2 is greater than 1/4?
Discussion guide
- Each has area twelve square units, using the same-sized unit squares.
- Six square units: 12 divided into two equal-area parts.
- Three square units: 12 divided into four equal-area parts.
- The same whole is shared among more equal parts, leaving less area in each.
- Six square units, one half of the same twelve-square-unit whole; 2/4 = 1/2.
- All four equal parts making the whole, including the three selected parts.
- No. They are unequal. Each area-3 piece is a quarter of 12, but the area-2 and area-4 pieces are not.
- No. Equal area can be arranged in different shapes; count the same-sized unit squares without gaps or overlap.
- D’s quarter: 5 square units compared with C’s half at 4. The wholes differ.
- No. Fraction numbers keep their values; the physical areas use different wholes.
Five to ten calm minutes can be enough for a visit. Repeat days when useful. Understanding halves with a familiar explanation may come before fluent sentences about denominators in another language. Keep a small set of words active and add the next set when ready.
| Day | Words | Small activity | What to notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–5 | Name the whole and the quantity shared equally. | Equal refers here to area. |
| 2 | 6–10 | Explain half, third and quarter of twelve square units. | Count each part’s area. |
| 3 | 11–15 | Read 3/4 and name what both numbers count. | Denominator includes selected and unselected parts. |
| 4 | 16–20 | Combine two quarters without overlapping area. | The whole stays the same. |
| 5 | 1–20 | Retell one correction from the story. | Keep the accurate observation. |
| 6 | Choose 5 | Open five matching numbers in another language. | Connect meaning before memorising sounds. |
| 7 | Review | Compare half of C with quarter of D. | Name each whole before comparing areas. |
If the learner says 1/4 is bigger because 4 is bigger, preserve the correct whole-number comparison. Point to equal whole areas and count each part’s area: 6 versus 3. Ask the learner to finish “The denominator counts how many equal parts make the whole, so for the same whole more equal parts means…” Keep the initial answer beside the corrected reason.
If every one of four unequal pieces is called a quarter, ask whether their areas match. Use the supplied 2, 3, 3, 4 example. If the denominator is taken as the unselected count, return to 3/4: three selected plus one unselected still make four equal parts. If equal is mistaken for identical outline, explain that rotating or rearranging equal unit squares can change shape without changing area.
Drawing or imagined regions are sufficient. Optional paper models can be marked or folded with an adult’s help; cutting is not required. When checking area with unit squares, cover the region once, without gaps or overlaps. Equal mathematical shares describe a quantity rule in this task; they do not mean every real-life decision must give everyone identical things.
Progress means naming the whole, checking equal parts and explaining what each number counts. “Two quarters make a half of this same whole” connects the words to a stable relationship. A prompt is normal learning support. Remembering the long word denominator can follow understanding its role; it need not come first.
Fresh comparison: region C has area 8 square units; its half has area 4. Region D has area 20 square units; its quarter has area 5. All square units have the same size. A quarter of D therefore has more area than a half of C. This does not change the number comparison 1/2 > 1/4: the areas being compared come from different-sized wholes. Say which whole each fraction belongs to.
| Region | Whole area (square units) | Equal parts in whole | Area per part (square units) | One part as a fraction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C | 8 | 2 | 4 | 1/2 |
| D | 20 | 4 | 5 | 1/4 |
Must all four languages be learned together?
No. Start with understanding in one language, then add matching numbered words when ready.
Are all fractions smaller than one?
No. 4/4 equals one and 5/4 is greater than one. This lesson begins within one whole so the meanings of equal parts and notation can become clear.
Does the denominator count only unselected parts?
No. In this model it counts all equal parts making one whole, selected and unselected.
Can differently shaped parts be equal?
Yes, in area. Name the quantity being compared; equal area does not require identical outlines.
Does a bigger denominator always mean a smaller fraction?
Not without conditions. For positive unit fractions 1/n, a larger positive denominator gives a smaller number. This is not a rule for arbitrary numerators: 3/4 is greater than 1/2.
Can a quarter of a big region exceed a half of a small one?
Yes, in actual area. Our examples give 5 and 4 square units. Name both wholes, while keeping the number comparison 1/2 > 1/4 clear.
Do we need scissors or food to practise?
No. The supplied tables, imagined regions and drawings are sufficient. Paper can be marked or folded with help if useful.
What should we do after an incorrect comparison?
Keep the accurate observation, identify the whole and equal-part rule, model one correction and try a new case. One answer does not diagnose a child.
