These 20 words help children talk about light sources, reflected light, materials and shadows. Ages 7–9 is a flexible guide. Start with five words and one example, then return when the learner is ready. The fictional records and imagined scenes can be used without equipment.
Every numbered word appears in English, Mandarin, Hindi and Russian. Read a familiar language for meaning, then follow the same number into another edition. Learning all four at once is optional. A short explanation understood well is a useful achievement in any language.
Mandarin uses simplified characters and pinyin with tones. Hindi and Russian Roman forms are approximate reading prompts. Russian stress marks are learning aids normally omitted in ordinary writing. Translate meanings in context: “source” here means a light source; “screen” is a surface receiving a shadow; “block” is a verb, not a toy brick. Hindi छाया here means a shadow, not a reflection. Sentences show how forms and phrasing change.

Chapters 5–8
Chapters 9–12
Start with a source, an object in the light’s path and a surface where the shadow is visible. In our simple arrangement light travels through air along straight paths. An opaque card blocks some paths from the lamp to the screen. That part of the screen receives less light from the lamp and looks darker. The card does not send a dark substance onto the screen.
Worked correction
Worked correction: “The shadow is 12 cm wide instead of 6 cm, so the card grew.” Keep the accurate observation: the shadow is wider in A. Now check the card width: it is 3 cm in both A and B. The lamp and screen also stay fixed. Only the card’s position changes. In this supplied small-source model the card nearer the lamp casts the wider shadow. A larger shadow therefore does not by itself prove a larger object.
Seeing an object and seeing through an object are different questions. A white opaque card is visible because it reflects some arriving light towards our eyes. A clear sheet allows a useful view through it. A frosted sheet transmits light but scatters it, so the picture behind is blurred. Being white, shiny or bright does not automatically make something a light source or transparent.
Read one row across the languages, then use the meaning in a sentence. A translation can be a phrase. Keep the word numbers when switching editions so the science stays connected. Everyday “bright” can describe a lamp, reflected light or a surface; this lesson uses it as an appearance comparison, not a calibrated measurement.
Transparent does not mean “transmits absolutely every bit of light”. Clear materials can reflect some light and can make faint effects on a screen. Translucent is not simply “exactly half transparent”: the word describes scattered transmitted light and an unclear view through the material. Thickness, coatings and the actual sample matter, so do not classify every kind of plastic or paper from its material name alone.

Внимательно следить за происходящим, отделяя его от непроверенного объяснения.
Мы наблюдаем увеличение тени, а не рост карточки.
Try it: Separate “the shadow is wider” from “the card grew”.
This original story uses a fictional, simplified record. A small light source and a flat screen stay 40 cm apart. The same 3 cm-wide opaque card remains upright, parallel to the screen, centred between source and screen. Its position is the only changed feature. The model supplies ideal shadow widths; real lamps can make softer edges and somewhat different measurements. No measuring of this page or screen is needed.
Use the table’s stated values; cm means centimetres. The three distance pairs each total 40 cm. The numbers describe this model, not a universal rule that every shadow is 6, 8 or 12 cm wide. In particular “nearer makes it bigger” needs the named reference and the fixed arrangement. Moving the lamp, changing the object’s tilt or changing the screen would be a different comparison.
| Setup | Card width (cm) | Lamp to card (cm) | Card to screen (cm) | Shadow width (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 3 | 10 | 30 | 12 |
| B | 3 | 20 | 20 | 6 |
English · The Card That Did Not Grow
Lea and Arun read an invented record called “The Card That Did Not Grow”. A small lamp faces a white screen 40 cm away. A 3 cm-wide opaque card stands between them, parallel to the screen. The lamp and screen stay fixed. Lea predicts, “If the shadow gets larger, the card must be larger too.” Arun writes the prediction down before they inspect the records.
In setup A, the card is 10 cm from the lamp and 30 cm from the screen. The supplied shadow width is 12 cm. In setup B, the same card is 20 cm from the lamp and 20 cm from the screen. Its shadow width is 6 cm. “A has the wider shadow,” Lea says. That observation is correct.
Arun points to the card-width column. Both entries say 3 cm. Lea checks again. “The shadow changed, but the card did not grow. Its position changed.” She keeps her first prediction and adds the correction beside it. The larger shadow belongs to the card nearer the lamp in this fixed arrangement.
“Nearer to what?” Arun asks. Lea answers, “In A the card is nearer the lamp but farther from the screen.” They name both ends of each distance. They do not turn the observation into a rule for every lamp, every screen position or every card angle.
They imagine a clear sheet, a frosted sheet and the white opaque card. The clear sheet allows a clear view of a drawing behind it. The frosted sheet lets light through but blurs that view. The white card prevents the view through it. Lea says, “White does not mean transparent.”
Finally Arun mentions a mirror. “It can look bright, but it reflects arriving light,” Lea explains. “It does not produce the lamp’s light.” They finish with a careful record: what stayed the same, what changed and what their evidence actually shows.
Discuss one question at a time. Point to the same card width and the changed distances. Answers can be spoken, drawn or first given in a familiar language. Ask the learner to add “because” only when they can explain the connection, rather than memorise a longer sentence.
1. What is the light source in the story?
2. Which has the wider shadow, A or B?
3. Did the card grow between A and B?
4. What stayed fixed in the comparison?
5. In A, nearer to what and farther from what?
6. Why does a white opaque card make a shadow?
7. How do transparent and translucent differ here?
8. Does a bright mirror produce the lamp’s light?
9. Order A, B and C by shadow width.
10. What can we conclude from a larger shadow alone?
Discussion guide
- The switched-on lamp produces the light used in the model.
- A: 12 cm compared with B’s 6 cm.
- No. Its width is 3 cm in both records; its position changed.
- The source, screen, 40 cm separation, card size and orientation. Only card position changed.
- Nearer the lamp, farther from the screen, compared with B.
- It blocks light through it, so part of the screen receives less light from the lamp. White colour does not imply transparency.
- Both transmit light, but the translucent sheet scatters it and blurs the view behind.
- No. It reflects arriving light; being bright is not sufficient to identify a source.
- A, C, B: 12, 8, 6 cm. The card remains 3 cm wide.
- Only that the observed shadow is larger in that comparison. We need the arrangement and object information before inferring the cause.
Use five to ten calm minutes when convenient, with pauses or repeated days as needed. Understanding a concept in one language and saying it independently in another can develop at different rates. A gesture plus the right word is a useful first step.
| Day | Words | Small activity | What to notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–5 | Name a source and something reflecting its light. | Producing and reflecting differ. |
| 2 | 6–10 | Describe the clear sheet, frosted sheet and opaque card. | Look through the sample, not at its colour alone. |
| 3 | 11–15 | Explain source, direction and screen in an imagined scene. | Name the receiving surface. |
| 4 | 16–20 | Make and keep a prediction before reading A and B. | Name both ends of each distance. |
| 5 | 1–20 | Retell why the card did not grow. | Preserve the correct observation and repair the inference. |
| 6 | Choose 5 | Open the same five numbers in a second language. | Connect meaning before memorising sound. |
| 7 | Review | Order A, C and B; explain what stays fixed. | Use the method with a fresh case. |
If the learner says “the card grew”, keep the accurate shadow comparison and ask which measurement belongs to the card. Circle the repeated 3 cm entries, then point to the different positions. Use the repaired sentence: “The same card makes different shadow widths when its position changes in this arrangement.” This fixes the inference without dismissing the observation.
If “nearer” is vague, ask “nearer to the lamp or nearer to the screen?” In A the card is nearer the lamp and farther from the screen; both statements are true. If opaque is confused with dark colour, use the given white card: it blocks transmission despite being white. If a mirror is called a source, ask whether it produces the lamp’s light or redirects arriving light.
For optional practical work, an adult can arrange a cool battery torch, card and a stable blank surface. Keep enough room light to move safely; point the torch at the surface and keep it away from eyes. Never look at the Sun, aim reflected sunlight, use a laser or use hot bulbs for this activity. Use drawings instead whenever equipment or conditions are unsuitable. Avoid glass sheets and sharp edges.
Look for three changes in explanation: the learner names the source, distinguishes the card from its shadow and names the reference for nearer or farther. A correct comparison with a prompt is still progress. A word forgotten in a second language does not erase an understood idea; return to the familiar sentence and connect the meaning again.
Try setup C in the same model: the card is 15 cm from the lamp and 25 cm from the screen, with a supplied shadow width of 8 cm. Its 3 cm width is unchanged. Order the shadows A, C, B from widest to narrowest: 12, 8, 6 cm. C is farther from the lamp than A but nearer than B. The comparison transfers because the lamp, screen, card and orientation remain the same.
| Setup | Card width (cm) | Lamp to card (cm) | Card to screen (cm) | Shadow width (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C | 3 | 15 | 25 | 8 |
Must we learn four languages at once?
No. Understand in one familiar language and add another when ready. The numbered links preserve the same meaning.
Is a shadow a dark object sent out by the card?
No. It is a region receiving less light from a source because some paths are blocked.
Does a bigger shadow always mean a bigger object?
No. The same object can cast different sizes as the arrangement changes. Check the source, object, screen and orientation.
Is opaque the same as black?
No. Our white card is opaque. Colour and transmission describe different properties.
Does transparent mean absolutely no shadow or reflected light?
No. Clear materials can reflect some light and produce faint shadow effects. Judge the actual sample and conditions.
Why name the reference for nearer?
The card can be nearer the lamp and farther from the screen at the same time. The missing reference changes the meaning.
Do we need a dark room or real equipment?
No. The supplied story and table are sufficient. Optional torch work should use adult-approved materials, safe room lighting and no direct light towards eyes.
What if the child gives the wrong explanation?
Preserve the correct observation, locate the changed feature, model one repair and try a new comparison. One answer does not diagnose a child.
Background reading for adults
Adult references on light transmission and shadow arrangements. The word cards, numerical model, story and practice here are original learning material. The model is a teaching example rather than a report of a real experiment.
