These 20 words help children ask a clear question, organise answers and explain what a small set of data shows. Ages 8–10 is a flexible guide. Start with five words and one comparison; there is no need to complete every language or activity in one visit.

Each word card contains English, Mandarin, Hindi and Russian. Read a familiar language for meaning, then use the same numbered link in another edition. Understanding a sentence before adding a new language keeps the four lists connected. Learning all four at once is optional.

Mandarin uses simplified characters and tone-marked pinyin. Hindi and Russian Roman forms are approximate reading prompts, not exact pronunciation guides. Russian stress marks are learning aids normally omitted in everyday writing. Here “table” means a data table, “row” is horizontal, and “scale” means the values on a graph axis. English count is a verb on card 7; data can be discussed as recorded information, including categories as well as numbers. Hindi चुनाव here means a choice, not an election.

CHAPTER 1 OF 12 · Understand the ideas

1. Understand what is being counted

Back to contents

A useful record begins with a clear question and a clear counting rule. Our fictional workshop asks: “Which one would you choose: drawing, building or storytelling?” Twelve imaginary participants each give exactly one valid response. Every response belongs to one of the three listed categories. Under those stated rules, the response total equals the number of participants.

Worked correction

Worked correction: “Drawing would use three equal intervals on the proposed bar graph, so it has three responses.” Keep the correct interval count: three intervals. Now read the scale, which is 0, 2, 4, 6. Each interval represents two responses. Three intervals therefore represent 2 + 2 + 2 = 6 responses. The table confirms 6. Counting spaces without their values gives the wrong unit.

Categories and responses are different things to count. There are three activities but twelve responses. Drawing has the greatest category count, six. Six out of twelve is exactly half, so “most among these three categories” does not mean “more than half of all participants”. It certainly does not mean everyone. State the comparison before choosing the word.

CHAPTER 2 OF 12 · Understand the ideas

2. The connected 20-word map

Back to contents

Read across a row to connect the four languages. Then use the whole sentence to understand the role of the word. A translation may be a phrase, and grammar changes in context. Mandarin 数据 and Russian данные refer here to the recorded information; Hindi आँकड़े is used in the same learning context. English “tally” on this card means a counting mark, not the final total.

This is an introduction to categorical data and simple counts, not a requirement to calculate averages or percentages. A table can answer the story questions without a graph. If you draw the proposed graph, use one bar per activity, equal bar widths, gaps between categories, a common zero baseline and equal scale intervals labelled 0, 2, 4 and 6. Label the quantity as number of responses. The scale lookup below is a table explaining that proposal, not an already drawn bar graph.

CHAPTER 7 OF 12 · Read the story

7. Shared story: Twelve Choices, Three Categories

Back to contents

The following is an original fictional survey record, not real information about children or a claim about global preferences. Each of twelve imaginary participants chooses one activity. The counts are drawing 6, building 4 and storytelling 2. The scale lookup describes a proposed vertical bar graph: zero at the baseline and two responses per equal interval.

For an optional tally record, add one mark for each response and group the first five marks before starting the next group. Six can be checked as a group of five plus one. The grouping is an aid: it does not turn six responses into two responses. A final number and its tally marks describe the same count.

English · Twelve Choices, Three Categories

Nila and Sam open an invented workshop record. Its question is clear: “Which one activity would you choose: drawing, building or storytelling?” Twelve imaginary participants each give exactly one response. No one chooses twice, and every response fits one listed category. Nila and Sam know this is a learning story, not a real survey of children.

They read six responses for drawing, four for building and two for storytelling. Sam says, “There are three categories, so three people answered.” Nila points to what the three counts: names of activities. The participant count comes from the responses. Together they add 6 + 4 + 2 = 12 and keep Sam’s first attempt beside the correction.

They plan a bar graph but do not need to draw it to answer the questions. The proposed scale is 0, 2, 4, 6, with equal intervals. Drawing would reach three intervals above zero. Nila first calls that “three responses”. Sam traces the scale: “Each interval is two. Two plus two plus two is six.” The table and scale now agree.

“Drawing has the most responses,” says Nila. Sam checks whether that means everyone. It does not: six other responses belong to building and storytelling together. Drawing accounts for six out of twelve, exactly half. The leading category is not more than half in this record.

They consider a tally record. Six marks could be grouped as five and one. Two groups do not mean two responses; grouping helps them check the same six. They label their planned count axis “number of responses”, so it cannot be confused with the number of activities.

At the end, they write: “In this fictional group, drawing leads with six choices.” They do not say it is the best activity or that every child in the world would choose it. They still do not know why the participants chose as they did. Their conclusion answers the question the record actually asked.

CHAPTER 8 OF 12 · Practise and check

8. Talk, reason and check

Back to contents

Take one discussion question at a time. Ask for a number, the thing being counted and a reason from the record. Speaking, drawing or answering first in a familiar language are all useful. The answer guide is for conversation and checking, not speed.

1. What are the three categories?

2. How many valid responses are in the record?

3. What does one proposed scale interval represent?

4. How many responses do three intervals above zero represent?

5. How many more chose drawing than building?

6. Does drawing’s lead mean more than half chose it?

7. Does the least chosen activity have zero responses?

8. Why are two tally groups not two responses?

9. Can we say all children everywhere would choose drawing?

10. What changes in the fresh group with 4, 4, 4?

Discussion guide

  1. Drawing, building and storytelling; they name activities, not participants.
  2. 6 + 4 + 2 = 12, matching twelve participants under the one-response rule.
  3. Two responses. Read the values 0, 2, 4, 6 before interpreting intervals.
  4. 2 + 2 + 2 = 6 responses, not three responses.
  5. 6 − 4 = 2 responses.
  6. No. Six out of twelve is exactly half; the other two categories also total six.
  7. No. Storytelling has two; least is relative to the other category counts.
  8. The groups contain five marks and one mark, representing six responses.
  9. No. The record describes only this fictional group and this question.
  10. The total remains twelve, but all categories tie and there is no single leader.

CHAPTER 9 OF 12 · Practise and check

9. A gentle seven-day practice plan

Back to contents

Use five to ten relaxed minutes per visit, with pauses and repeated days when helpful. A learner may understand a table in one language while still learning to say the explanation in another. Start with meaning, then practise one useful sentence.

DayWordsSmall activityWhat to notice
11–5Say the question and the one-choice rule.A response belongs to a category.
26–10Explain tallies, counts and the total.Count marks, not just groups.
311–15Read a row, a column and the scale lookup.Name the scale value per interval.
416–20Compare category counts and make one conclusion.Keep the conclusion within this group.
51–20Retell one correction from the story.Keep the accurate observation.
6Choose 5Open five matching numbers in a second language.Connect meanings before memorising sounds.
7ReviewTry the new 4, 4, 4 group.Same total can have a different distribution.
Seven days, with pauses or repeats when helpful.

CHAPTER 10 OF 12 · Repair and continue

10. Repair the exact misunderstanding

Back to contents

If the learner counts three intervals as three responses, preserve the accurate spatial count. Ask what one interval represents. Trace 0 to 2, then 2 to 4, then 4 to 6. Say “three intervals, two responses each, six responses”. Compare with the table, keeping the original attempt beside the correction so the repaired step stays visible.

If “three” is given as the participant total, ask whether three counts activities or responses. Point to the count column and add 6 + 4 + 2. If the sum were 13 when twelve people each gave one valid response, inspect the original records for duplication or another recording problem. Do not change an inconvenient value just to make the total fit.

If “everyone likes drawing” follows from the leading category, read the other rows: four chose building and two chose storytelling. Our question records a choice for this workshop, not every person’s complete set of likes. A preference record does not tell us why people chose, which activity is objectively best, or what an unasked group would choose.

CHAPTER 11 OF 12 · Repair and continue

11. Notice progress and transfer

Back to contents

Progress means naming the counting unit, reading the scale before the value and keeping the conclusion within the record. A learner who says “drawing leads in this group, with six responses” has connected vocabulary to evidence. Prompts are ordinary learning support. A forgotten second-language word does not erase an understood mathematical idea.

Try a fresh fictional group with the same one-choice rule: drawing 4, building 4, storytelling 4, total 12. The counts are equal. There is no single leading activity, and each category is tied for both greatest and smallest count. On the same two-per-interval scale each proposed bar would use two intervals. Changing the scale to one-per-interval changes the drawing instructions, not the number of responses.

CHAPTER 12 OF 12 · Repair and continue

12. Questions, sources and the next step

Back to contents

Must we learn all four languages together?

No. Use one for understanding and add another when ready. Links keep the same numbered meaning.

Are these real children’s survey results?

No. The group, responses and story are fictional learning material. No personal data need to be collected.

Does a table need a graph beside it?

No. The table answers these questions. A graph offers another representation; its labels, zero baseline and scale must describe the same counts.

Does one interval always mean one response?

No. Read the scale. In our proposal each interval represents two responses.

Does most mean everyone or more than half?

Not necessarily. Here six is greatest among 6, 4 and 2, but exactly half of twelve.

Can we always add category counts to get people?

Only when the rules support that interpretation. Here each participant gives one valid response in exactly one category. With multiple choices, repeated responses or missing answers, check the collection rules first.

Can a zero-count category appear in a table?

Yes, when it is part of the defined categories. Zero can be meaningful. Our storytelling count is two, not zero.

What should we do after a wrong answer?

Keep the accurate part, locate the missing unit or rule, model one correction and try a fresh example. One answer does not diagnose a child.
