AGES 7–9 · LIFE CYCLES: BUTTERFLIES AND FROGS
Find your next learning step
Follow one animal, group equivalent stage names and explain the new-generation arrow.
Chapter index · Worked correction · Discussion and checking · Vocabulary articles
A caterpillar and a winged butterfly can look so different that a child wonders whether they are different animals. This lesson for children aged roughly 7–9 uses twenty words to follow development, recognise stage names and compare a butterfly with a common frog pattern. Start with five words if that suits the learner. An adult can read the story aloud; the age band is a guide, not a test.
The four language editions share numbered meanings, examples and an original story. Use each card’s links to find the same meaning in English, Mandarin, Hindi or Russian. Explain the idea in a familiar language first, then try another expression. A translation may be a phrase, and different labels may refer to one developmental stage. Count the meanings before counting the written labels.
Mandarin uses Simplified Chinese and pinyin with tones. Hindi and Russian include approximate Roman reading aids; Russian stress marks support learning and are usually omitted in everyday writing. The lesson uses invented records and paper cards, without requiring live animals. The frog model is a common pattern rather than a claim about every frog species, and the activities do not require any particular national curriculum.
Chapter index
1–4 · Follow the animal before counting names
5–8 · The frog comparison: words 11–15
9–12 · A gentle seven-day practice plan
Begin by following one animal’s development through time. For our butterfly, the sequence is egg, larva, pupa and adult. Caterpillar is the butterfly’s larval form; chrysalis names its pupa. These extra words help describe the four stages. They do not add new steps between larva and pupa or between pupa and adult. A sequence tells order; it does not tell us how long every stage lasts.
Worked correction
Worked correction: “Egg, larva, caterpillar, pupa, chrysalis, adult: six stages.” Keep all six useful labels. Group larva with caterpillar and pupa with chrysalis. The four developmental groups are egg; larva/caterpillar; pupa/chrysalis; adult. The error was counting names as separate stages. The same grouping remains true when a language needs a longer phrase for a label.
Our frog comparison uses egg, tadpole, froglet and adult as four broad teaching groups. The early tadpole has a tail and gills; during transition, legs develop and the tail is reabsorbed. Frogs do not pass through an insect pupa. The frog and butterfly both change form, but their developmental patterns differ. Some frogs develop directly without a free-living tadpole, so keep our model’s scope visible.
Read the map by relationship: a caterpillar is a larva, and a butterfly pupa is a chrysalis. Tadpole is the larval form in our frog example, but it is not a caterpillar. A shared general word can cover different particular forms. Avoid turning a vocabulary comparison into a claim that a tadpole becomes a butterfly or a caterpillar becomes a frog.
English adult applies to both examples. Chinese 成体 is general, while 成虫 is used for an adult insect and 成蛙 for an adult frog. Hindi डिंभ and the borrowed term larva may both appear in learning materials. Russian куколка names the insect stage here; its everyday doll meaning is irrelevant to this lesson. Keep the biological context when switching languages.

The story and records below are original fictional teaching examples, not observations of real classroom animals. B1 tracks one imagined butterfly through four stages; F1 tracks one imagined frog through the stated common pattern. Record numbers mark order only. They are not days, ages, lengths or equal time intervals. We have not identified a species or assigned a universal timetable.
A cycle diagram can link an adult to new eggs through reproduction. That link crosses generations: it does not show the adult shrinking into its own egg. B1 remains the same individual through its egg, larval, pupal and adult stages. New eggs would contain offspring, not a younger B1. Likewise, a collection of four separate stage photographs is not proof that one animal was followed continuously unless the record says so.
| Record order | Individual | Stage |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | B1 | Egg |
| 2 | B1 | Larva / caterpillar |
| 3 | B1 | Pupa / chrysalis |
| 4 | B1 | Adult butterfly |
| Record order | Individual | Stage and described feature |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | F1 | Egg |
| 2 | F1 | Early tadpole: tail and gills |
| 3 | F1 | Froglet: legs, shrinking tail remnant |
| 4 | F1 | Adult frog: mature form, no tail |
English · Six Names, Four Stages
Nila placed six paper labels on the table: egg, larva, caterpillar, pupa, chrysalis and adult. “Six stages,” she said. Sam opened an imaginary record called B1. It followed one butterfly through development, without giving dates or a species name.
They placed larva beside caterpillar. Both labels described B1’s second stage. Pupa and chrysalis belonged together on the third. Egg was first and adult fourth. Nila kept all six useful names but made four stage cards. “I was counting labels,” she said. “Now I’m counting the stages they describe.”
The record showed a growing caterpillar before the pupa. Sam asked whether a larger caterpillar had already become adult. Nila pointed to its developmental form. “It has grown, but it is still a larva. Size alone doesn’t choose the stage.”
At the next record the butterfly was a living pupa, changing towards the adult form. The children did not call it dead because it looked still. They also kept hatching from an egg separate from an adult emerging from the pupa.
Next they opened F1, an imagined frog following a common egg, tadpole, froglet and adult pattern. The early tadpole had a tail and gills. Their froglet had legs and a shrinking tail remnant. The adult record described the mature form without a tail. No frog pupa appeared.
“The tadpole swims, so is it a fish?” Sam asked. Nila preserved the swimming observation but followed F1’s frog life history. One action did not change which animal the record followed. They added that this common frog pattern did not describe every frog species.
Finally Sam drew an arrow from an adult to new eggs. Nila almost said B1 became an egg again. They added “next generation” beside the arrow. The new eggs would hold offspring; the adult would not shrink back into its own beginning.
Their final note read: “Follow the animal, check what each name means, and ask what the arrow connects.”
Answer aloud, arrange word cards or point to a stated feature. Try “These two labels belong together because ___.” Give time to identify the animal and stage before choosing a term. The checking guide is visible below. Compare the explanation as well as the final answer; an explanation in the learner’s strongest language is welcome.
1. Why are six butterfly names only four stage groups?
2. Does a bigger caterpillar have to be adult?
3. Is a pupa dead because it looks still?
4. What hatches from our butterfly egg?
5. Does a tadpole become a butterfly?
6. What happens to the tadpole’s tail in our transition?
7. Does every frog have a free-living tadpole?
8. Does the adult-to-egg arrow make B1 an egg again?
9. Do records 1–4 mean four equal days?
10. Can a drawing alone show how lungs function?
Discussion guide
Larva/caterpillar are one stage; pupa/chrysalis another. Egg and adult complete four.
No. It can grow while remaining larval; developmental form matters, not size alone.
No. It is a living developmental stage with major changes taking place.
A larva or caterpillar. The adult later emerges from the pupa, a different event.
No. Our tadpole follows the frog record F1. Caterpillar belongs to butterfly record B1.
It is gradually reabsorbed. Our froglet still has a remnant; the adult record has no tail.
No. Some develop directly. Our sequence is a common model, not a universal rule.
No. It represents reproduction and offspring of a new generation.
No. Numbers show order only. No durations or dates are given.
No. A drawing may show a labelled organ; function requires explanation or other evidence. Many frogs also use moist skin for gas exchange.
Use five to ten calm minutes and pause earlier if needed. This flexible plan does not promise mastery in seven days. Paper cards and the supplied records are sufficient; collecting eggs, handling animals or raising them is unnecessary. Revisit one useful contrast at a time, then change language while keeping the meaning stable.

| 6 | Selected five | Open matching cards in a second language. | The meaning stays while expression changes. |
| 7 | Review | Explain the new-generation arrow. | The adult does not become an egg again. |
If the learner counts six butterfly stages, keep the six labels but place synonyms on the same card. Ask whether the record describes an additional body form between larva and caterpillar. It does not. This repairs the thing being counted rather than discarding useful vocabulary. Repeat with the four languages: a longer translated phrase also does not add a biological stage.
If the learner says a tadpole is a fish because it swims, preserve the observation about swimming. Use the stated life history: F1 develops through the frog sequence. One shared action or body feature is insufficient to assign the animal to a different group. If the learner says a large caterpillar must be adult, ask for the developmental stage rather than relying only on size.
If the biological relationship is clear but a translated term is difficult to retrieve, keep the explanation and practise that language link. If the vocabulary is fluent but a claim exceeds the record, return to what is observed and what a reliable source explains. A word-retrieval gap and a reasoning gap need different next steps; neither is a diagnosis of the child.
Transfer the idea to an unfamiliar butterfly record with six written labels: egg; caterpillar/larva; chrysalis/pupa; adult. It still contains four stage groups. Then compare the froglet in F1 with the adult frog: the froglet record includes a small tail remnant, while the adult record describes the mature form without a tail. The froglet’s appearance does not add a pupal stage.
A useful progress sentence is “I can follow the individual, group the stage names and explain the next-generation link.” Explain one relationship in a familiar language, then find its numbered card in another. Do not infer an exact age, species, survival rate or breathing mechanism from a picture alone. A careful question is a useful part of observation.
| Written labels | Stage group |
|---|---|
| Egg | 1 |
| Caterpillar / larva | 2 |
| Chrysalis / pupa | 3 |
| Adult | 4 |
Are larva and caterpillar separate butterfly stages?
No. Caterpillar names the butterfly’s larval form. Two labels identify one stage.
Are pupa and chrysalis separate steps?
No. Chrysalis is the butterfly pupa. A cocoon, when present, is a surrounding silk structure, not an extra developmental stage.
Does adult just mean the biggest individual?
No. It is a developmental stage associated with maturity and reproduction. A large caterpillar remains larval.
Does a tadpole’s tail fall off?
In the common transition here it is gradually reabsorbed. A froglet can retain a shrinking remnant.
Do frogs have a pupal stage?
No. Metamorphosis is a broad shared idea, not an identical sequence for every animal.
Do all frogs follow this model?
No. Some develop directly without a free-living tadpole. Exact timing, habitat and feeding details need species-specific information.
Does the adult become its own egg again?
No. The new-egg arrow represents reproduction and offspring in a new generation.
How can children learn four languages calmly?
Keep one meaning steady, explain it in a familiar language and open the matching numbered card elsewhere. Five understood words can be enough for one session.
