Top 20 Vocabulary Words for Children | Ages 8–10 | Skeleton, Muscles and Movement

A moving arm is not explained by one body part. Bones provide a framework, joints are meeting places, muscles produce force, and tendons carry a muscle’s pull to bone. This guide for children aged roughly 8–10 links twenty words so the body is understood as a working system. The age band is flexible: an adult can read aloud and a learner can begin with five words.

All four editions keep the same word numbers, examples, story and practice. Open the matching card in English, Mandarin, Hindi or Russian and preserve the same idea while changing language. Some translations are phrases because a natural, accurate meaning matters more than forcing a one-word match.

Mandarin uses Simplified Chinese with tone-marked pinyin. Hindi and Russian include approximate Roman reading aids; Russian stress marks are shown for learning and are usually omitted in ordinary writing. The diagrams in the activities are paper models, not medical tests. This is general anatomy vocabulary, not advice about pain or injury.

Chapter 1 of 12

1. Build the connection map

Back to contents

Start with a system sentence: muscles pull through tendons on bones across joints. This sentence assigns a different job to each structure. A joint is not an empty gap, a tendon is not a muscle, and a ligament does not connect muscle to bone. Keep the connection map visible while learning the words.

Worked correction: locate the force and connection

Worked correction: “The tendon bends the elbow by shortening.” Keep the useful location: a tendon crosses near the joint and is involved in movement. Repair the mechanism: the muscle develops force when it contracts; the tendon transmits that pull to bone; the bone changes position around the joint. The tendon is part of the pathway, but the simplified model does not assign it the muscle’s job.

This is a simplified movement model. Real movement is controlled by the nervous system and can involve several muscles acting together, including some simultaneous activity. The opposing-pair example helps organise first ideas; it is not a complete description of every movement or every joint.

Chapter 2 of 12

2. The four-language word map

Back to contents

Read the vocabulary in relationships: muscle–tendon–bone, bone–ligament–bone, and bone ends–cartilage–joint. Then connect actions: contract and relax; bend and straighten; support and protect. A word becomes more useful when the learner can state what it connects to and what changes.

Translations follow this lesson’s meaning. Hindi अंग can broadly mean a body part or limb, so the definition narrows it to an arm or leg. Russian рука and нога commonly cover wider everyday regions than the narrower anatomical terms. Use the shared definition and example to keep the intended concept aligned.

Chapter 7 of 12

7. Use the paper elbow model

Back to contents

The shared story uses an original paper elbow model: two card strips for bones, a paper fastener for the joint, two strings for muscle–tendon paths, and labels for the structures. It is a reasoning model rather than a copy of the whole arm. String does not behave exactly like living tissue, and the fastener does not reproduce cartilage, ligaments, nerves or the complex shape of a real elbow.

In the simple pair model, pulling one labelled string bends the model and pulling the other straightens it. The string is being pulled by a hand, so it demonstrates direction and connection, not biological contraction. The learner should say what the model represents and one important way it differs from the body.

Structure / cardConnection or observationWhat it supports
Muscle–tendon–boneA muscle’s pull is transmitted through tendon to bone.Movement pathway across a joint.
Bone–ligament–boneA ligament joins bones and helps joint stability.Different from a tendon connection.
Bone ends and cartilageCartilage covers surfaces in many joints and reduces friction.A joint contains more than bones.
SkullBony structure surrounding the brain.Protection.
Rib cageRibs surround the heart and lungs.Protection with breathing movement.
SpineMany vertebrae form a supporting column.Support and protection; not one long bone.
Selected relationships for a first movement model; real anatomy contains more structures and control.
Structure / cardConnection or observationWhat it supports
Pull path ALower card strip rotates upwardModel bends; direction only.
Pull path BLower card strip rotates toward straightModel straightens; direction only.
Real body meaningMuscle contracts; tendon transmits pull; bone moves around jointPaper hand-pull is not biological contraction.
Selected relationships for a first movement model; real anatomy contains more structures and control.

English · The elbow model that needed two strings

Leena and Pavel make an elbow model from two card strips and a paper fastener. They label the strips bone and the meeting point joint. A string runs from a paper muscle shape across the joint to the lower strip, where they label the narrow connection tendon.

Leena pulls the first string. The lower strip moves upward and the model bends. “The string bent the elbow,” she says. Pavel replies, “In our model, your hand pulls the string. In the body, a muscle contracts and the tendon carries its pull to bone.” They keep Leena’s observation about the direction but repair the mechanism.

They add a second string on the other side. Pulling it moves the model toward a straighter position. The two paths can create opposite movements while both use pulling. They add a ligament label between the two card bones, then write that a real joint also includes cartilage and other structures their fastener does not show.

Finally, they translate the pathway: muscle → tendon → bone → movement around a joint. Each keeps the same arrows in all four languages. Their model is useful because it makes the connection visible, and limited because paper and string are not living tissues.

Chapter 8 of 12

8. Ten questions and a checking guide

Back to contents

Answer aloud, point to the word map or sketch a labelled pathway. A useful sentence is: “The ___ connects to ___; when ___ changes, the bone moves around the ___.” Give a reason before checking. An explanation in the learner’s strongest language is welcome before trying a second language.

1. What connects muscle to bone?

2. What connects bone to bone at a joint?

3. Why is cartilage included in the joint map?

4. Do muscles push bones to make the opposite movement?

5. Is the spine one long bone?

6. Which words describe functions rather than body parts?

7. How do skull and ribs illustrate part and whole?

8. What does the paper fastener fail to show?

9. Can one structure have more than one function?

10. How should four languages be used without changing the science?

Checking guide

  1. A tendon. In the simplified movement pathway, it transmits the muscle’s pull to bone.
  2. A ligament. It helps hold the joint together and contributes to stability.
  3. In many joints it covers bone surfaces and helps reduce friction where bones meet.
  4. In the simple pair model, no. One pathway pulls to bend and another pulls to straighten. Both movements use muscle force transmitted as pull.
  5. No. It is a column formed from many vertebrae, with joints and other tissues between and around them.
  6. Support and protect are functions. Movement is a result or process; bend, straighten, contract and relax describe changes or actions.
  7. They are bony parts of the skeleton. The skull helps protect the brain; the rib cage helps protect the heart and lungs.
  8. It does not reproduce cartilage, ligaments, fluid, nerves, living tissues or the real shape and control of an elbow.
  9. Yes. Bones can contribute to support, protection and movement, depending on their position and connections.
  10. Keep the same labelled pathway and evidence, then replace each term with its matched equivalent. Explain first in the strongest language if needed.

Use five to ten calm minutes and pause earlier if needed. No fixed learning speed is promised. Paper strips, string and a fastener are optional; drawing arrows is enough. Do not test range of movement on another person, and stop any personal movement that causes discomfort. The lesson is about language and models, not physical assessment.

DayWordsActivityNotice
11–5Match skeleton, bone, joint, muscle and tendon across two languages.Build the movement pathway.
26–10Compare ligament, cartilage, skull, spine and rib by connection or function.Separate tissue, part and whole.
311–15Label limb, arm, leg, bend and straighten on a paper figure.Use one joint for each action.
416–20Explain contract, relax, support, protect and movement with one example each.Distinguish change, function and result.
51–20Read the shared story and rebuild its arrow pathway.Keep the mechanism unchanged across languages.
61–20Answer five questions, then revise one answer using the guide.Repair the relationship, not only the word.
71–20Label the knee, chest and spine transfer diagrams.State what each simple diagram leaves out.

Chapter 10 of 12

10. Repair common connection errors

Back to contents

If tendon and ligament are confused, do not correct by sound alone. Draw two connection statements: muscle → tendon → bone, and bone → ligament → bone. Ask what is on each side of the tissue. The learner then repairs the relationship, not merely the spelling.

If a child says that muscles push bones, preserve the correct idea that muscles produce movement. Then use the pull pathway. In the simplified elbow example, one pathway pulls to bend and another pulls to straighten. “Opposite movement” does not mean that a muscle changes from pulling into pushing.

If skull, ribs and skeleton are treated as three unrelated objects, move from part to whole. The skull and ribs are made of bones and belong to the skeleton. They illustrate protection, while many other bones also contribute to support and movement. One structure can have more than one function.

11. Transfer to knee, chest and spine diagrams

Back to contents

Try three fresh diagrams. A knee diagram shows two bones meeting, smooth covering on their ends, a band joining bone to bone and a cord joining muscle to bone. A chest diagram shows ribs around the heart and lungs. A spine diagram shows many vertebrae in a column. Label joint, cartilage, ligament, tendon, protect and support, then state one fact the simple drawing cannot show.

A useful progress sentence is: “I can name the structures, trace the connection, describe the change and state a limit of the model.” Translate one pathway without changing its mechanism. If a term is missing, keep the reasoning and practise the word; if a term is fluent but the connection is wrong, return to the diagram.

New diagramCluesSupported labels
KneeTwo bones meet; smooth covering on ends; band bone-to-bone; cord muscle-to-bone.Joint, cartilage, ligament, tendon.
ChestCurved bones around heart and lungs.Ribs; protect.
SpineMany smaller bones arranged in a column.Spine; support; many vertebrae.
Transfer the same connection rules and state one limit of each simple diagram.

12. Frequently asked questions and sources

Back to contents

Who is this set for?

Ages 8–10 are a flexible guide. Younger learners may use the pictures and five-word groups; older learners can explain mechanisms and model limits.

Must all four languages be learned at once?

No. Begin with one familiar language and one new equivalent. The matching numbers allow more languages to be added later.

Are the Roman reading aids exact pronunciation?

No. They are approximate reading supports. Pinyin includes tones; Russian stress marks help learners. Original script and spoken models remain important.

Is a tendon the same as a ligament?

No. A tendon usually connects muscle to bone; a ligament connects bone to bone and helps stabilise a joint.

Does a relaxed muscle do nothing?

Not necessarily. The simple pair model says tension reduces while the opposing movement occurs. Real posture and movement can include activity in several muscles.

Is the paper elbow a complete anatomy model?

No. It shows a connection and direction. It omits living tissue behaviour, nerves, blood supply, joint fluid and much of the three-dimensional anatomy.

Does this lesson assess an injury?

No. It teaches general vocabulary and model reasoning. Pain, injury or restricted movement needs appropriate adult and health-professional attention.

How can progress be checked?

Ask the learner to name a structure, trace its connections, explain one movement and state one limit of the model. Correct reasoning with a hesitant new word shows a different need from fluent words with a wrong connection.

Sources for the anatomy facts

These sources support the background anatomy statements. The paper model, story and practice activities are original teaching examples.
