English to Marathi Translation | How to Translate English into Marathi Accurately

To translate English into Marathi accurately, begin with what the English source means, who will read it and what action the reader is expected to take. Marathi uses Devanagari script, grammatical gender, case-marking and postpositions, and verb forms that can reveal details English leaves unspecified. It also distinguishes inclusive and exclusive “we.” An accurate translation is therefore not a list of dictionary replacements. It is a natural Marathi message that preserves the same actors, facts, conditions, dates, numerical values and practical choices.

Here is a useful starting example. “Please submit the application form by Friday” can become कृपया शुक्रवारपर्यंत अर्जाचा फॉर्म जमा करा. This is a polite instruction with Friday as the latest day, though a particular institution may use अर्ज or another specific label for the document. If this affects an examination or official service, the original needs a full calendar date and cutoff time. A translator should not invent the hour or assume which Friday the issuer intended.

For general correspondence, educational material and ordinary websites, a good first draft followed by focused review can work efficiently. For contracts, immigration forms, clinical instructions, payments and safety warnings, arrange appropriately qualified translation and domain review. A fluent Marathi sentence can still mislead if it changes a permission to an obligation or says an application was approved when the source only says it was received.

English to Marathi translation: a practical five-step method

First read the entire English paragraph. Identify who speaks, who acts, what object is involved, who receives the result, when it happens and how certain the statement is. Mark must, may, not yet, only, unless, at least, at most and every named organization, reference number or amount.

Second, decide who the Marathi is for: a public reader in Maharashtra, a student, a business customer, a colleague or a friend. Third, choose a respectful, neutral or familiar style. Fourth, write natural Marathi sentences using the right noun and verb forms. Fifth, compare each target clause with the source and test the Marathi alone.

Before publishing, ask:

  • Does the same person perform the action?
  • Is the correct document, fee, school or institution still named?
  • Are requests, rights, recommendations and prohibitions distinguished?
  • Are time, completion, conditions and exceptions unchanged?
  • Is the grammatical form supported by source information rather than a guess?
  • Are तू, तुम्ही, आम्ही and आपण used appropriately?
  • Do quantities, prices, dates and units match exactly?
  • Does the Devanagari script remain readable in the final page and PDF?

This checklist catches consequential meaning errors before time is spent on decorative wording.

Marathi phrases for immediate everyday use

“Hello.” नमस्कार. A widely useful greeting.

“Thank you.” धन्यवाद. Suitable in many respectful and neutral situations.

“Please wait here.” कृपया येथे थांबा. A clear polite instruction.

“How are you?” तुम्ही कसे आहात? Suitable for many respectful-address contexts; other forms may be preferred depending on the person being addressed.

“I am ready.” मी तयार आहे. This reports readiness without inventing approval or completion of another action.

“I don’t know.” मला माहीत नाही. This communicates lack of knowledge, not refusal.

“Please send the document.” कृपया कागदपत्र पाठवा. The document term may need a more specific institutional equivalent.

“The price may change.” किंमत बदलू शकते. Possibility is preserved.

“We have received your application.” आम्हाला तुमचा अर्ज मिळाला आहे. Receipt is confirmed; approval is not.

Each phrase is a starting point. A government application and a personal letter can require different terminology or levels of formality.

Marathi is not just Hindi with different word choices

Marathi and Hindi are both Indo-Aryan languages and share many words through related histories and borrowing, but their grammar, pronouns and conventional expressions differ significantly. Marathi has three grammatical genders, a productive contrast between inclusive and exclusive “we,” and important noun and verb patterns that cannot be reproduced through Hindi word substitution.

Both languages are commonly written in Devanagari, yet sharing a writing system does not make them identical. A Hindi translation converted into Marathi-looking vocabulary without grammatical restructuring can be unnatural or wrong.

The correct approach is to identify the meaning in English, select the appropriate Marathi construction and check it with a competent Marathi speaker. Never rely on script similarity as proof that a sentence belongs to the requested language.

Marathi in Maharashtra and a wider Marathi-speaking community

Marathi is widely used in Maharashtra and among communities elsewhere in India and internationally. Readers may recognize standard written language while using different regional or conversational expressions. A public document should prioritize clarity, whereas theatre dialogue or a family message may have a distinct voice.

Official terminology matters. A school certificate, government department or service in Maharashtra has a specific name and procedure. A translated notice about a Singapore qualification should not casually replace it with a Maharashtra examination just because learners have similar ages.

For general readers, a clear contemporary written Marathi style is usually a useful starting point. For a particular institution, follow its authorized terms and local register. A project brief prevents inconsistency between article headings, form labels and service emails.

Official Marathi terminology: where to check

The Marathi Language Department of Maharashtra and the Directorate of Languages provide resources connected with official Marathi use. Maharashtra’s government Marathi dictionary and terminology site lists vocabulary across administration, mathematics, medicine, finance, engineering, education and many other fields.

For a technical document, general fluency is not enough. A finance term that sounds natural in casual conversation may have a different official translation. A medical term may require an approved specialist expression.

A good translator checks the source concept first, then consults an appropriate reference. The dictionary confirms a candidate word; the document’s purpose and a domain specialist determine whether that word is the right one.

Devanagari and what correct Marathi script means

Marathi is normally written in Devanagari. Ordinary Marathi-language content should display Marathi words in that script rather than using Latin-letter transliteration as a substitute. Romanization may help a learner pronounce unfamiliar words, but it is not the standard output for most Marathi websites or documents.

For example, मराठी is the language name in its normal writing. A romanized form such as “Marathi” is appropriate in English explanatory prose, not as a complete replacement for a Marathi paragraph.

Test the actual Unicode characters in the editing system. If text loses vowel signs, conjuncts or other details when copied into a webpage or PDF, readers may be unable to search or interpret it accurately. Correct script is part of translation quality.

Devanagari letters, vowel signs and conjuncts

Marathi uses combinations of consonant letters and vowel signs, as well as conjunct writing. The language also uses letters and sound distinctions that deserve specific attention, such as ळ, which a tool unfamiliar with Marathi may mishandle.

Do not assume that a Devanagari spelling is automatically correct merely because it can be pronounced by a Hindi speaker. Established Marathi spellings and words should be verified in a Marathi source.

Technical production matters too. A complex text shaping system must display combined letters properly. Test at the final font size, inside headings, buttons and exported PDFs. A screenshot is not enough if users need to search or copy the text.

Do not invent romanized spellings of names

A person’s name may have an official Marathi spelling, a Latin-script passport form and other transliterations. Translation should preserve the authorized identity form required by the particular document. A plausible alternative romanization may identify the wrong person in a legal or financial system.

The same principle applies to university names, public agencies, addresses, company registrations and certificates. Where an official Marathi rendering exists, use it after verification; otherwise preserve the source form and add a brief explanation if needed.

Searchability and traceability are part of fidelity. A beautifully localized name that cannot be matched to the original record can be less useful than retaining the source spelling.

Word order: Marathi commonly puts the verb at the end

English commonly uses subject–verb–object order. Marathi often follows subject–object–verb structure. विद्यार्थी पुस्तक वाचतो can mean “The student reads a book” with a masculine singular subject in a suitable general or habitual sense.

But you cannot translate English simply by moving the verb to the end. Marathi case relations, agreement, modifiers, postpositions and conversational emphasis all affect the sentence. A long English subordinate clause may need rewriting to remain clear.

Begin with a participant map: who does what, to whom and when. Then create a Marathi sentence that expresses those relationships naturally. Compare the finished Marathi with the map before correcting stylistic details.

Marathi grammatical gender: masculine, feminine and neuter

Marathi has three grammatical genders. A familiar noun such as मुलगा (boy) is masculine, मुलगी (girl) feminine, and घर (house) neuter. Gender can affect adjectives and verbs according to the construction.

English may not supply the details Marathi grammar sometimes expresses. “I came” may require मी आलो for a masculine speaker or मी आले for a feminine speaker in ordinary usage. A translator should not decide from a person’s occupation or a stereotype.

When the English source lacks necessary information, ask for clarification or choose a suitable alternate construction that does not invent a fact. Naturalness should never come at the cost of creating unsupported identity information.

Adjective agreement: edit the whole phrase

Many Marathi adjectives change according to the gender and number of the noun they modify. चांगला मुलगा means “good boy,” चांगली मुलगी “good girl,” and चांगले घर “good house” in common structures.

If a translator replaces one noun with another, the surrounding adjective may need to change as well. An automated system may update the main noun but leave an agreement form from the previous version. The resulting phrase can sound visibly incorrect.

Review article-like determiners, demonstratives, adjectives, nouns and dependent pronouns together. A noun phrase should be checked as a unit after every terminology change.

Marathi noun forms and the oblique pattern

Marathi has case relations and oblique forms that appear before various postpositions and suffixes. A noun’s shape may change when a relation is added. This differs from English, where many prepositions are separate words and the following noun often stays unchanged.

For example, मुलगा can appear in a form such as मुलाला when referring to a boy as a recipient or object in an appropriate construction. The change is more than adding an English “to.” The noun’s form and relationship are part of the grammar.

The University of Chicago’s Marathi in Context explains pronouns and relevant grammatical structures with examples. Use a full sentence when verifying a noun rather than guessing a form from its dictionary citation.

To, for and a person affected by an action

Marathi -ला forms frequently appear with recipients, animate objects and experiencers in different constructions. मला पुस्तक हवे आहे can mean “I want/need a book,” with the experiencer expressed differently from an ordinary English nominative subject.

English “to” can describe a recipient, a destination or an infinitive. Marathi does not use one universal form for all three. “Send the book to the student,” “go to school” and “want to study” involve different relationships.

The translator should label each relation before choosing a suffix or postposition. This is especially important when a form mentions a parent, teacher, student and officer in the same paragraph.

Direct objects, animacy and specificity

Marathi can mark objects differently depending on grammatical characteristics and construction. A person as object may use an overt form where an inanimate object in a comparable sentence does not. Translating every English direct object through the same suffix is unreliable.

For example, मी पुस्तक वाचतो can mean “I read a book” for a masculine speaker in a general sense. A different phrase describing “I see the student” needs its appropriate object marking and agreement context. The reader must still know who sees whom.

When the source contains several participants, verify the semantic roles separately. A sentence that reverses who received the document is inaccurate even if every Marathi word is correctly spelled.

The marker ने in many perfective transitive sentences

Marathi commonly uses -ने with an agent in many perfective transitive constructions. रामने पुस्तक वाचले can mean “Ram read the book.” The verb form relates to the grammatical construction and object properties, not simply the masculine name Ram.

It is not correct to add ने after every subject in every past-tense sentence. The pattern depends on aspect, transitivity and other grammatical features. An ordinary past intransitive sentence can behave differently.

For translators, the important question is whether the event is presented as completed and which argument is marked. Check the whole construction after choosing a verb, especially in reports where the distinction between “was working” and “completed the work” matters.

Genitive forms: चा, ची and चे

Marathi can express possession through forms including चा, ची and चे, with agreement linked to the possessed noun or phrase in relevant constructions. रामचा मित्र means “Ram’s friend,” while रामची पुस्तके illustrates a different noun phrase pattern when referring to Ram’s books.

An English “the student’s report” may mean a report written by the student, a report about the student or a report owned by the student. A compact possessive does not automatically settle those meanings.

If authorship, confidentiality or responsibility matters, use a fuller Marathi construction to distinguish it. Translate the relationship rather than simply reproduce English apostrophe-s.

मध्ये, वर, पासून and other relations

मध्ये commonly expresses “in/inside” in suitable contexts, वर can express “on,” पासून “from/since,” and साठी purpose or beneficiary in many uses. These are helpful beginner correspondences, but their real use depends on the whole sentence.

“The form is in the office,” “take the form to the office” and “the form came from the office” describe different relationships. The Marathi should preserve location, destination and origin separately.

For shipping instructions or a school’s submission process, draw a movement arrow from source to destination. Ask who carries or sends what, and where it is expected to arrive. That simple check prevents expensive procedural misunderstandings.

English “with” may mean an instrument or companion

The English “with” can describe using an instrument, accompanying someone, having an attribute or consulting a person. Marathi may use -ने, बरोबर, सोबत or another construction according to the meaning.

For example, पेनाने लिहा means “write with a pen” in an instrumental sense. मित्रासोबत जा can mean “go with a friend” in an accompaniment sense. Those two meanings are not interchangeable.

A dictionary’s first listed equivalent for “with” cannot decide whether the source describes a tool or a companion. Paraphrase the relationship first, then choose the Marathi expression.

आपला, आमचा and group ownership

Marathi can use forms that distinguish whether “our” includes the addressee. आमचा refers to the speaker’s group’s ownership in ordinary exclusive contexts, while आपला can be inclusive or otherwise context-dependent.

A company describing “our internal records” generally excludes the customer from the owner group. A teacher saying “our classroom” may be including students. The wording should match who actually belongs to the group.

This is not only stylistic. In legal or administrative communication, choosing an inclusive pronoun may imply a shared obligation that the source did not create. Always map the people in “we” and “our.”

आम्ही and आपण: inclusive versus exclusive “we”

Marathi offers a distinction English does not consistently express. आम्ही normally excludes the person being addressed from the group called “we.” आपण commonly includes the addressee in that group. In other contexts आपण can also serve as a respectful form of address.

A support team saying “We received your application” would generally use आम्ही or an equivalent exclusive construction. A teacher saying “Let’s solve this together” may use आपण, because teacher and students participate.

The University of Chicago Marathi in Context pronoun reference gives examples such as “let’s look at the maps” and contrasts the speaker’s group with an inclusive one. Read the relationship before choosing the pronoun.

तू, तुम्ही and आपण as forms of “you”

English “you” is ambiguous about singular/plural and politeness. Marathi तू is familiar singular. तुम्ही is commonly plural or respectful singular. आपण can sometimes be used as a highly respectful form of address, though usage varies by context.

तुम्ही कसे आहात? is a familiar respectful form of “How are you?” for a masculine or unspecified respectful addressee in many contexts. A form aimed at a particular woman may change agreement; a translator should know who is being addressed rather than guess.

For a public-service webpage, use respectful or impersonal constructions. A personal message between close friends may use तू. Choose a consistent voice throughout the email, form and follow-up messages.

Pronouns and missing source gender

A third-person Marathi form can carry gender or respect information not present in a vague English pronoun. English “they” can also refer to a group or a single person without specifying gender. A translator should not automatically turn this into a named man or woman.

If a sentence about a principal, teacher and parent says “They sent the report,” the source may require context to identify the sender. Marathi may offer several natural wordings, but one should not quietly assign responsibility to the wrong person.

Repeat a role or proper name where clarity matters. A little repetition is better than a compact pronoun chain that leaves readers uncertain about who is responsible.

Habitual, ongoing and completed actions

English “I read books every day” describes a habit, while “I am reading now” describes an activity in progress. Marathi distinguishes these using verb forms and constructions.

मी दररोज वाचतो can mean “I read every day” for a masculine speaker. मी आता वाचत आहे can mean “I am reading now.” The source context determines whether the event is habitual, temporary or specific.

Do not translate every English “-ing” form the same way. Some English progressives describe future arrangements or irritating habits. A good Marathi translation expresses the intended action and time, not only the English verb shape.

Perfective versus imperfective: completion changes the fact

A support officer “was examining the documents” may have been interrupted or may still be working. An officer “examined the documents” may be reporting a completed step. Marathi has aspectual constructions that should preserve that distinction.

This matters in claims, school notices and banking updates. “Under review” is not “approved.” “Payment processing” is not “payment successful.” A completed-event form must not be used merely because it sounds crisp or official.

Before choosing the verb, mark the event as underway, habitual, completed or proposed. Then make sure every status word agrees with that timeline.

Future tense: possible does not mean promised

मी उद्या येईन can mean “I will come tomorrow.” कदाचित मी उद्या येईन can communicate “I may come tomorrow” with a tentative reading. The difference is important when a promise or appointment depends on a person’s arrival.

English “The results may change” can be निकाल बदलू शकतात in a suitable context. A version stating they definitely will change strengthens the source. A forecast, product claim or customer notification should preserve the actual uncertainty.

For consequential messages, classify future language as expected, possible, scheduled, committed or guaranteed. Then select the Marathi wording that matches the claim.

Need, must, should and may

English “must” imposes a requirement; “should” can advise or express an expectation; “may” can give an option; “need not” removes a requirement. Marathi offers several constructions such as पाहिजे, हवे, लागेल, शकता and गरज नाही, with different effects in context.

तुम्ही अर्ज करू शकता can mean “You can apply.” तुम्हाला अर्ज करावा लागेल conveys a stronger requirement. पुन्हा अर्ज करण्याची गरज नाही says no new application is necessary.

An inaccurate modal can change a customer’s rights or a student’s eligibility. Label each English rule before selecting a Marathi verb. Do not make a source instruction stricter simply because a direct command sounds more formal.

Not necessary is not prohibited

English “You do not need to register again” can be तुम्हाला पुन्हा नोंदणी करण्याची गरज नाही. This says no repeat registration is necessary. It does not necessarily forbid someone from registering again.

“Do not register again” can be पुन्हा नोंदणी करू नका, a negative instruction. A policy might require one or the other depending on the situation.

Always distinguish absence of obligation, prohibition, impossibility and incomplete action. These are different meanings even if all contain some form of “not.”

नाही, नको and अजून नाही

Marathi negatives include forms such as नाही for many declarative negatives and नको in various expressions of undesirability or negative instruction. मला माहीत नाही means “I don’t know.” मला ते नको can mean “I don’t want that” in a suitable context.

अजून नाही commonly contributes “not yet.” पार्सल अजून आलेले नाही can mean “The parcel has not arrived yet.” This is different from predicting that it never will arrive.

Identify the source event and negative category first. A reader receiving a shipment update needs the current receipt status, not a new claim about permanent failure.

Not all versus none: a school example

English “Not all students passed” means that at least one student did not pass. Marathi सर्वच विद्यार्थी उत्तीर्ण झाले असे नाही preserves that weaker statement more explicitly than a rushed negative that some readers could interpret ambiguously.

A version meaning “No students passed” makes a much stronger claim. In results reporting, that could mislead families and students. The distinction between all, some and none is a factual issue.

The same concern applies to at most, at least, only, some, approximately and no more than. Check quantified expressions together with negation, not as isolated vocabulary.

If, only if, unless and exceptions

Marathi conditional constructions can involve जर … तर … in many contexts. जर पाऊस पडला, तर कार्यक्रम पुढे ढकलला जाईल means “If it rains, the event will be postponed.” The postponement remains conditional.

An eligibility rule allowing access only if approval is granted must preserve the necessity of approval. A source saying unless requested makes an exception to a default instruction. Removing that exception changes what readers can do.

For a complicated rule, draft a decision tree: normal action, required conditions and exception. Translate that map, then inspect the Marathi text as if the reader were trying to qualify.

Before, after and until in procedures

English “before,” “after” and “until” control action order. Marathi constructions involving आधी, नंतर and पर्यंत can help express different relations. The appropriate full phrase depends on the sentence.

“Disconnect the device before cleaning” is not “Disconnect after cleaning.” In a safety procedure, reversing those words can be hazardous. In a software flow, “wait until payment is confirmed” differs from “pay after confirmation.”

Draw steps A, B and C before translating long instructions. Verify that the Marathi would cause a reader to perform them in the same order.

काल: yesterday or tomorrow depends on context

Marathi काल can refer to yesterday or tomorrow, with verb forms and context distinguishing the intended meaning. This is convenient in conversation but can be dangerous in isolated instructions or when the date has legal consequences.

मी काल आलो can mean “I came yesterday,” with a masculine speaker, while मी उद्या येईन explicitly says “I will come tomorrow.” Where precision matters, use a confirmed calendar date rather than an ambiguous relative term.

An international service should also specify the time zone if its deadline is relevant in more than one country. Translation must not silently move an event from one local day to another.

Dates in Marathi: spell out the month for critical notices

An English numeric date 03/04/2026 can mean March 4 or 3 April depending on its source locale. Translating into Marathi does not make that ambiguity disappear. Confirm the original intention, then write the date clearly, such as ३ एप्रिल २०२६ for 3 April 2026.

For a school application closing at 17:00, the complete deadline should include that hour and the relevant time zone. “By Friday” may be too vague if the portal shuts before midnight.

Check copied dates as structured information in addition to reading the prose. A missing month or wrong day can undermine an otherwise excellent translation.

Marathi numerals, lakh and crore

Readers may see Devanagari digits and familiar South Asian number units such as लाख (100,000) and कोटी (10,000,000). A professional document may also use Western digits for international compatibility. Choose a consistent display convention.

The underlying quantity must remain identical. “One billion” in contemporary English short-scale usage means 1,000,000,000, equivalent to one hundred crore. A misplaced zero or wrong unit can change a figure by a factor of ten or more.

For finance and science, record raw digits and units separately. A beautiful Marathi number phrase does not compensate for an incorrect magnitude.

Currency conversion is not language translation

A price in SGD stays a price in SGD when the text is translated into Marathi. It must not automatically become Indian rupees because the readership is in India. Converting currencies requires a specified rate, date and rounding rule and should be authorized separately.

Review taxes, discounts, shipping charges, unit prices and totals. “Up to 20% discount” is not a promise that every product receives exactly 20%. “Shipping excluded” is not “free shipping.”

These are semantic and financial details. A language check alone cannot verify that a translated promotion makes the same offer.

A complete customer-service example

English: “Thank you for contacting us. We have received your request and will respond within three working days. Please do not submit the form again unless we ask you to.”

Marathi: आमच्याशी संपर्क साधल्याबद्दल धन्यवाद. आम्हाला तुमची विनंती मिळाली आहे. आम्ही तीन कामकाजाच्या दिवसांत उत्तर देऊ. आम्ही सांगितल्याशिवाय कृपया फॉर्म पुन्हा जमा करू नका.

The message thanks the customer, confirms receipt, promises a reply in working days and retains an exception to the no-resubmission instruction. It does not claim that a request has already been approved.

An organization should still verify whether the transaction is a विनंती, अर्ज, तक्रार or another type of submission, and how it defines working days. The source’s workflow determines the term, not the translator’s desire for elegant wording.

Refunds: distinguish received, reviewing and paid

English: “Your refund request has been received. It is under review. You do not need to submit another request at this time.”

Marathi: तुमची पैसे परत मिळण्याची विनंती प्राप्त झाली आहे. तिचा सध्या आढावा घेतला जात आहे. सध्या तुम्हाला दुसरी विनंती करण्याची गरज नाही.

The three facts are receipt, current review and lack of a present need to resubmit. The translation does not claim that a refund has been approved or paid. Those would be additional financial facts.

For a live financial service, use the approved terminology for refund and verify the exact status before publishing. A reassuring sentence that reports money already paid can mislead a customer.

Application forms: “apply” has several meanings

English “apply” can mean apply for a job, submit an application, apply a filter, use a coupon or apply a medical product. Marathi needs different action words for different situations.

अर्ज करा can fit applying for something, while लागू करा can fit applying a setting or rule in a suitable interface. These are not universal substitutions; the actual product or institution determines the preferred wording.

A useful method is to paraphrase the English: “submit a request for admission” or “activate this filter.” Then translate that real action, not the ambiguous word.

Save, Cancel and Delete need screen context

A digital button labelled “Save” may preserve a draft, settings or a document. “Cancel” may dismiss a dialog or cancel a paid booking. “Delete” may remove one item or an entire account. Those actions can have very different consequences.

Translate buttons with the help of screenshots, user-flow diagrams, error messages and confirmation states. The Marathi reader should be able to predict what will happen after pressing each label.

Where an action is irreversible, use clear adjacent wording. A short elegant button name cannot replace an accurate explanation of a permanent deletion.

Upload and download cannot be reversed

Uploading transfers a file from a device to a service, while downloading retrieves one. Marathi websites may use English-derived digital terms or more formal equivalents, but the direction must be correct.

An applicant asked to upload identity documents must not be told to download them. A support worker asking the user to retrieve a certificate must not be translated as asking them to submit it.

Test the target label against the real software: file selection, progress, error state and confirmation. A translation is successful only if the Marathi user can complete the same task.

A product safety example

English: “Disconnect the device from the power supply before cleaning. Do not immerse the adapter in water.”

Marathi: स्वच्छता करण्यापूर्वी उपकरणाचा वीजपुरवठा खंडित करा. अडॅप्टर पाण्यात बुडवू नका.

The source requires disconnection before cleaning and prohibits immersing the adapter. Do not add another technical procedure merely because it seems wise. Any unclear instruction should be resolved with the document owner.

Check model names, voltage, maximum temperature, pressure, time limits and warnings independently. A skilled technical reviewer is important because a reversed quantity or missing negative can be dangerous.

School materials: keep the thinking task

English commands such as “describe,” “explain,” “compare,” “justify,” “evaluate” and “calculate” ask students to demonstrate different skills. Marathi वर्णन करा, स्पष्ट करा, तुलना करा, कारण द्या, मूल्यमापन करा and गणना करा can express distinct tasks according to context.

A mathematics problem that asks students to show working should not become a request for only the final answer. A science question asking for evidence must not become a request for unsupported opinion. A reading task asking for comparison is different from one asking for description.

Preserve diagrams, units, numerical values, mark allocations and curriculum references. The translated educational resource should assess the same concept and reasoning as the original.

Research: an association is not a proven cause

English: “The findings suggest an association, but they do not establish causation.”

Marathi: निष्कर्षांवरून काही संबंध असण्याची शक्यता सूचित होते; मात्र त्यामुळे कारण-परिणाम संबंध सिद्ध होत नाही.

The translation keeps the finding tentative and explicitly avoids claiming proof of causality. A version using “proved” where the source says “suggested” would exaggerate the research.

Review methods, sample size, figures, statistical terminology, chart labels and citations separately. A fluent paragraph can still be scientifically inaccurate if it changes the strength of the evidence.

Idioms: preserve the purpose, not the English picture

“Break the ice” usually means helping people relax in a social setting, not breaking physical ice. A Marathi translation should communicate easing hesitation or awkwardness when that is the source meaning. A literal image is appropriate only for a sentence actually about ice.

“Let’s touch base tomorrow” usually means having a brief conversation or update. A Marathi message should preserve whether the speaker proposes contact, schedules a meeting or promises a phone call. Do not invent a commitment.

Creative advertising can use local expressions, but must not add product guarantees or remove important qualifications. Cultural adaptation and factual fidelity are separate editorial checks.

AI English-to-Marathi translation: write a stronger prompt

AI can help with first drafts, but it may choose the wrong gendered past form, confuse आम्ही with आपण, use Hindi-like wording, mishandle oblique forms or change an administrative status. Fluent output is not proof that those decisions were correct.

A useful brief is: “Translate into clear contemporary Marathi for adult readers in Maharashtra. Use respectful language. Preserve names, amounts, dates, source uncertainty, negation, conditions and obligations. Distinguish inclusive and exclusive we. Flag missing gender information instead of guessing.”

After drafting, ask for a bilingual difference audit, then have a competent Marathi reviewer inspect consequential passages. A second AI output may repeat the same mistake. High-stakes documents need human domain review.

Three quality-assurance passes

Pass one: meaning. Align English and Marathi clauses, checking actors, recipients, document identity, modal force, conditions, dates and numerical limits. Correct anything that changes what the reader would believe or do.

Pass two: natural Marathi. Hide the English. Check pronouns, gender agreement, postpositions, verb aspect, word order and the institution’s preferred terms. Remove unnatural literal structures without adding facts.

Pass three: production. Check Devanagari characters, fonts, line breaks, forms, buttons, copied identifiers, links, time zones and PDF output. Test the actual page, not just the editor’s preview.

Record mistakes and corrections with their reasons. A repeating case-marker or pronoun error becomes easier to prevent when it is included in a targeted checklist.

Twelve practice translations

1. “Thank you.” धन्यवाद. A neutral expression of thanks.

2. “Please wait here.” कृपया येथे थांबा. A polite instruction.

3. “I am reading a book.” मी पुस्तक वाचत आहे. An ongoing action.

4. “I am ready.” मी तयार आहे. A present state, not proof of another completed action.

5. “We received your request.” आम्हाला तुमची विनंती मिळाली आहे. Receipt, not approval.

6. “Let us study together.” आपण एकत्र अभ्यास करू या. The listener is included.

7. “The document is ready.” कागदपत्र तयार आहे. Readiness, not necessarily formal acceptance.

8. “The application is under review.” अर्जाची तपासणी सुरू आहे. A process that is underway.

9. “You do not need to register again.” तुम्हाला पुन्हा नोंदणी करण्याची गरज नाही. A lack of necessity.

10. “Only members may enter.” फक्त सदस्यांनाच प्रवेश आहे. The restriction is explicit.

11. “Not every student passed.” सर्वच विद्यार्थी उत्तीर्ण झाले असे नाही. This is different from nobody passing.

12. “The price may change.” किंमत बदलू शकते. An uncertain possible change.

For each example, identify the important decision: pronoun inclusion, gender, event stage, quantifier or the reader’s obligation. Understanding that choice is more useful than memorizing a phrase without context.

Six fluent-looking mistakes that change meaning

Case A: inclusive versus exclusive “we.” A company saying “We received your request” should not casually use an inclusive form that implies the customer belongs to its receiving team. आम्ही or an exclusive construction is ordinarily more faithful.

Case B: receipt versus approval. “We received the application” cannot become अर्ज मंजूर झाला आहे, which states approval.

Case C: permission becomes duty. “You may submit another file” must not become “You must submit another file.” The Marathi modal wording controls a real reader choice.

Case D: not yet becomes never. “The package has not arrived yet” reports a current status. It does not establish that delivery will never happen.

Case E: maximum becomes minimum. जास्तीत जास्त पाच means at most five; किमान पाच means at least five. These limits are opposites.

Case F: association becomes causation. A study suggesting a relationship must not be translated as proving that one factor caused another.

All six could survive a spelling check. Semantic comparison with the source is the only reliable way to detect their effect on the message.

Frequently asked questions

Is Marathi the same as Hindi? No. They share some vocabulary and commonly use Devanagari, but grammar, pronouns and natural expression differ.

How many grammatical genders does Marathi have? Three: masculine, feminine and neuter. Gender can influence adjective and verb forms.

What is the difference between आम्ही and आपण? आम्ही usually excludes the addressee from “we”; आपण often includes them and also has respectful-address uses in other contexts.

When should I use तू or तुम्ही? तू is familiar singular address; तुम्ही commonly serves plural or respectful singular address. Choose according to relationship and document purpose.

Do Marathi verbs indicate gender? They can in various tense and aspect constructions. English may not state the necessary detail, so the translator should not invent it.

Can I use AI to translate English into Marathi? Yes, for drafting and brainstorming, but consequential information needs source-to-target checks and competent human review.

Where can I check technical Marathi terminology? The Maharashtra government Marathi terminology dictionary includes official and specialist word lists.

What should I verify first when time is limited? Negatives, actors, conditions, deadlines, quantities, payments, names and process status. Wording polish comes afterward.

What matters is the decision a Marathi reader makes

An accurate English-to-Marathi translation gives readers the same facts, choices, duties and limitations in natural Marathi that the English original provides. Case forms and agreement make it grammatical, suitable pronouns make the relationship correct, and factual checks protect dates, money and process states.
