English to Nepali Translation | How to Translate English into Nepali Accurately

To translate English into Nepali accurately, begin with what the full English message means, who will read it and what they need to do next. Nepali uses Devanagari script, postpositions, verb agreement, respectful and familiar forms of address, and a time system that does not map perfectly onto English. A fluent sentence can still be wrong if a verb suggests the wrong person acted or a deadline is silently changed. Translate complete meanings rather than individual words, then verify every important fact and condition against the English.

A useful example is “Please submit the application form by Friday.” In respectful Nepali, कृपया शुक्रबारभित्र आवेदन फाराम बुझाउनुहोस्। gives a polite instruction with Friday as a deadline. But an organization may require a specifically named form, and a real portal might close at 5 p.m. in a particular time zone. A translation should preserve that information when supplied and ask for clarification when it is missing.

For ordinary messages, travel information, general articles and school materials, a carefully specified first draft plus bilingual review can be efficient. Legal, healthcare, financial, immigration and safety documents need appropriately qualified human translation and domain checks. Attractive Nepali prose is not proof that an application was actually approved or that a payment was completed.

How to translate English into Nepali: a five-step method

Read the entire English paragraph before drafting. Identify the actor, recipient, affected item, event time and intended action. Mark terms that determine readers’ rights or decisions: must, may, only if, unless, not yet, at least, at most, dates, currencies, names and numerical limits.

Choose a Nepali style suited to the reader. A respectful customer email, familiar personal message and learner-friendly worksheet require different verb forms and wording. Write natural Nepali, compare each clause with the English and finally read the Nepali alone to check that it can stand without the original.

Before publishing, ask:

  • Does the same person do the same action?
  • Is the recipient still the recipient rather than the sender?
  • Does permission stay distinct from obligation or prohibition?
  • Are all exceptions, negatives and numerical bounds preserved?
  • Does the event remain pending, completed, planned or possible?
  • Are respectful forms appropriate to the audience?
  • Are names, dates, money and official identifiers exact?
  • Is the Nepali script readable and functional in the final output?

Meaning comes first because a correct-looking sentence can still lead a reader to the wrong real-world action.

Common English-to-Nepali phrases for quick use

“Hello.” नमस्ते। A useful everyday and respectful greeting.

“Thank you.” धन्यवाद। Common in polite communication.

“Please wait here.” कृपया यहाँ पर्खनुहोस्। A polite instruction.

“How are you?” तपाईं कस्तो हुनुहुन्छ? A respectful question.

“I don’t know.” मलाई थाहा छैन। This says information is unknown, not that the speaker refuses to share it.

“I am ready.” म तयार छु। A statement of readiness.

“Please send the document.” कृपया कागजात पठाउनुहोस्। A polite request when कागजात is the correct document term.

“We received your request.” हामीले तपाईंको अनुरोध प्राप्त गरेका छौँ। Receipt, not approval.

“The price may change.” मूल्य परिवर्तन हुन सक्छ। It communicates possibility, not a guarantee.

These examples work as starting points, but a particular agency may have an established name for its application, registration document or service.

Nepali is not Hindi with a different accent

Nepali and Hindi are both Indo-Aryan languages and commonly use Devanagari. They share some vocabulary, but Nepali has its own grammatical patterns, honorific forms, case markers and contemporary written conventions.

A Hindi sentence cannot simply be passed off as Nepali because the writing system looks familiar. Basic sentences may share recognizable elements, while their natural wording and agreement differ.

For professional work, identify Nepali as the actual target and ask a competent Nepali reader to review it. Script similarity is not a substitute for language accuracy.

Nepali in Nepal, India and overseas communities

Nepali is widely used in Nepal, in parts of India and in communities elsewhere. Much standard written Nepali is shared, but local institutions, conversational styles and some vocabulary differ. A document for an organization in Kathmandu may need terminology different from a notice issued by a school in Singapore.

Do not rename a foreign institution to make it appear Nepali. A Singapore school examination and a Nepalese examination may serve students of similar age but have different rules and qualifications.

A good project brief can state: “Contemporary standard Nepali for adult public readers in Nepal, respectful and direct, preserve official names and source currency codes.” For dialogue or overseas audiences, modify that brief deliberately.

A structured Nepali course you can use as a grammar reference

The Introduction to the Nepali Language course offers learning materials on pronouns, verbs, postpositions, places and respectful forms. Its honorific present-tense lesson explains the relationship between forms such as तिमी and तपाईं and their verbs.

Another useful reference is the Digital Himalaya Nepali beginner’s primer, which includes examples of postpositions and verb forms. A language resource helps with grammar; the actual document owner must still verify legal, financial or technical facts.

Build a glossary with approved Nepali terms, grammatical examples and the original meaning. That makes recurring document names consistent across an entire site.

Devanagari script: correct Nepali is not Romanized Nepali

Nepali normally uses Devanagari script. Romanization can support pronunciation lessons or informal communication, but it is not an ordinary replacement for a full Nepali-language webpage.

For example, नेपाली is the language name in its script. Writing “Nepali” identifies the language in English but does not provide the text a Nepali reader expects to read.

Use proper Unicode characters and modern fonts. Test that a reader can select, copy, search and input the words in a form. An image of the text may look correct yet be less useful and accessible than real Unicode text.

Vowel signs, consonants and conjunct characters

Devanagari uses independent vowel letters, dependent vowel signs and consonant combinations. A learner who types a consonant with the wrong vowel sign may create a different word or a misspelling.

Conjuncts and the virama sign are also important. A text can break if copied into software that handles Indic shaping poorly. A screenshot does not reveal whether its underlying characters are correct.

Check a document in the actual font, browser and PDF viewer readers will use. For names and application fields, verify copy-and-paste behavior as well as the visible appearance.

Nepali spelling cannot be inferred from Hindi spelling

Even though the scripts overlap, Nepali spelling and established vocabulary must be checked as Nepali. A borrowed word may have several plausible forms; an institution may prescribe one for its own material.

Do not automatically replace terms with Sanskrit-derived words just to make the prose sound formal. In digital-service communication, a familiar loanword may be clearer. In official documentation, a standardized Nepali equivalent may be necessary.

Choose based on reader comprehension and the document’s purpose. A termbase should record one approved expression for the same process rather than alternate between unrelated synonyms.

Word order: a Nepali verb often comes at the end

English typically follows subject–verb–object order: “The student reads the book.” Nepali commonly uses subject–object–verb order. विद्यार्थीले किताब पढ्छ। can mean “The student reads a book” in a non-honorific construction, with the exact -ले marking affected by context and emphasis.

For a plain introductory example, म किताब पढ्छु। means “I read/study a book” or have a reading habit in a suitable context. The action appears after the object.

Translating English is not accomplished by reversing the order. Nepali uses honorific verbs, case-related markers and other structures that must reflect the actual participants and event.

Case relations and postpositions: meaning follows the noun

Nepali uses postpositions and case-related forms to indicate agency, object/recipient, location, origin, possession and other relationships. English often expresses these through separate prepositions before a noun.

Common patterns include घरमा (“at/in the house”), घरबाट (“from the house”) and घरमा जानु (“to go home/to the house” in context). The same place can occupy different roles.

A translator should label whether a phrase expresses destination, location, source or beneficiary. A wrong postposition may send a customer or document in the wrong direction even when the place name is correct.

The marker मा: location and more

Nepali -मा often marks location in a place phrase. म घरमा छु। means “I am at home.” किताब टेबलमा छ। can mean “The book is on the table” in an appropriate context.

This does not make मा a universal translation of English “in,” “on,” or “at.” The intended location, object and natural phrase determine the construction.

The Nepali course lesson on places provides clear examples with मा and respectful locative sentences. Use full clauses when checking location meaning.

बाट andदेखि: origin, time and movement

-बाट commonly appears in source or origin expressions, such as घरबाट (“from the house”). देखि may express a starting point in suitable temporal or spatial phrases.

English “from” can describe an origin, removal, starting time, sender or inference. No single Nepali word will map to all those meanings in every context.

A delivery sentence should identify where an item starts and where it must arrive. A scheduling sentence needs a start date. Classify the source relation before choosing the postposition.

लाई and the person receiving something

Nepali -लाई commonly appears with recipients and certain objects. मलाई can mean “to me” or identify an experiencer. मलाई थाहा छैन means “I don’t know.” विद्यार्थीलाई may mean “to the student” in a suitable context.

“The manager sent the parent a letter” contains sender, item and recipient. A translation that makes the parent the sender reverses the event even though all three nouns may be correctly spelled.

Draw a small participant map before translating a sentence with several people. Then check the postpositions and verb together.

मैले and the agent marker ले

Nepali -ले occurs with agents in many transitive past constructions and also has instrumental uses. मैले किताब पढेँ। means “I read the book” as a past action in a common form.

Compare म घर गएँ। — “I went home” — which does not need the same -ले marker in the simple intransitive construction. This is a useful warning against treating ले as a universal past-tense suffix.

The Nepali past-tense lesson gives both examples. Learn why the marker appears, not only which English tense the sentence uses.

ले can also express an instrument

In a different construction, -ले may identify the means of an action. मैले कलमले लेखेँ। can mean “I wrote with a pen” in an appropriate context.

English “by” has several meanings: by Friday, by the teacher, by train, by using a pen. Do not assume the same Nepali case form represents every one. “By Friday” is a deadline, not a tool.

Paraphrase the relationship before translating a preposition. This avoids a common class of literal-translation errors.

Possession: मेरो, तपाईंको and whose report

मेरो means “my,” and तपाईंको can mean “your” in respectful address. मेरो किताब means “my book.” These are useful, but possession is not the only relationship English apostrophe-s may indicate.

“The student’s report” could mean a report written by the student, a report about the student or one belonging to the student. A compact Nepali possessive phrase may not resolve the source ambiguity.

Where authorship, evaluation or confidentiality matters, use a fuller phrase explaining the relationship. Natural Nepali should not assign an author the English did not name.

The plural marker हरू: useful, not always obligatory

Nepali -हरू can mark plural nouns or groups in many contexts. किताबहरू means “books,” while विद्यार्थीहरू can mean “students.” But plural reference may also be clear from numerals, quantifiers or context without repeating the marker everywhere.

A translator who mechanically adds हरू to every English plural may produce awkward or redundant text. A translated label must match the natural Nepali phrase, not the number of suffixes in the English.

In invoices or school records, preserve the quantity first, then choose the appropriate noun form. A grammatically elegant plural of the wrong object is still inaccurate.

Nepali does not have an obligatory inclusive/exclusive pronoun pair like some languages

हामी is the ordinary Nepali word for “we,” and it can refer to a group that includes or excludes the addressee according to context. Do not impose a mandatory inclusive/exclusive contrast from Malayalam or Telugu onto standard Nepali.

For a company saying “We received your application,” the surrounding words should identify the organization as the receiving party. For “Let’s learn together,” the construction should naturally invite the reader into the activity.

When a contract needs exact group membership, explicitly name the company, committee or participants rather than rely on an ambiguous “we.”

Respectful address: तँ, तिमी, तपाईं and हजुर

Nepali has several degrees of familiar and respectful address. तँ is very familiar and can sound inappropriate or offensive outside suitable relationships. तिमी is familiar, while तपाईं is a common respectful form. हजुर is used in a variety of respectful contexts and can also function as an address or response.

English “you” does not tell the translator which relationship exists. A public-facing customer message should not randomly choose a highly familiar form for unknown adults.

Decide the speaker, listener and social context before translating. Respect is expressed in the verb as well as the pronoun, so changing only one word may leave inconsistent grammar.

तपाईं and respectful verb agreement

Nepali respectful verbs commonly use forms ending in -नुहुन्छ in suitable present constructions. तपाईं पढ्नुहुन्छ। means “You read/study” respectfully, while तिमी पढ्छौ। can address someone familiarly.

उहाँ विद्यालय जानुहुन्छ। means “He/She goes to school” with a respectful third-person form. The same English sentence could also be rendered in a non-honorific form when the relationship differs.

The Nepali honorific verb guide gives examples of the contrast. It is useful because a translator must check pronoun and verb form together.

सम्मान and the person’s identity

Respectful address does not license invention of someone’s age, job title or family relationship. A teacher may be addressed respectfully, but a translator should not automatically add a professional title absent from the source.

In a story, the dialogue may show characters becoming more or less familiar over time. Such changes may be important and should be deliberate. In a banking notice, a consistent professional tone is generally more suitable.

The best choice is the one that preserves the relationship the English writer intended, even if English pronouns leave that relationship only implicit.

Nepali present tense: habit versus action now

म पढ्छु। can mean “I read/study” in a common general or habitual present context. म अहिले पढ्दै छु। means “I am studying/reading now,” highlighting an ongoing action.

The difference matters when translating instructions and workflows. “We process requests daily” states a service routine, whereas “We are processing your request” reports the current status of a specific item.

A literal English present tense does not decide the Nepali form without time context. Mark whether the action is habitual, currently underway or a general fact.

Past tense: completed action and the verb ending

मैले किताब पढेँ। means “I read the book” in a completed past context. म घर गएँ। means “I went home.” These show different relations between agent marking and verb type.

A source saying “I was reading when the phone rang” is different from “I finished reading before the phone rang.” Nepali should preserve whether the reading overlapped the call or had already finished.

For reports involving several events, draw a timeline. This helps a translator choose appropriate verbs without accidentally changing the order of responsibility.

Future tense: a promise should not become mere possibility

म भोलि आउनेछु। can mean “I will come tomorrow” in a standard formal future construction. But “I may come tomorrow” expresses uncertainty, which needs an appropriate qualifier or possibility construction.

Similarly, “We will reply within three days” states a commitment, while “We expect to reply within three days” is more qualified. Both may sound reassuring, but their meanings differ.

Classify the source as certain, expected, scheduled, promised or possible. Then select Nepali wording that preserves the actual commitment.

The ongoing process versus completed approval

A school might write तपाईंको आवेदन प्राप्त भएको छ — “Your application has been received.” An application under review requires a different status message, such as आवेदनको समीक्षा भइरहेको छ. A completed approval should only be stated if the issuer really made the decision.

Do not conflate submission, receipt, review, approval, rejection and payout. They are separate operational stages.

If a translation tool chooses the most positive-looking term rather than the correct stage, a reader may fail to supply more information or misunderstand their eligibility. Verify the source status before writing the target.

Not required is different from forbidden

English “You do not need to register again” removes a requirement. तपाईंले फेरि दर्ता गर्नुपर्दैन। can express no need to register again in suitable respectful language.

“Do not register again” is a direct instruction and may be expressed as फेरि दर्ता नगर्नुहोस्। It is a stronger command than absence of necessity. Those meanings are not interchangeable.

A public-service translator should label each rule as optional, required, recommended, prohibited or unnecessary before selecting Nepali wording.

सक्नु, पाउनु and obligation words

Nepali offers different patterns for ability, possibility, permission and necessity. Constructions related to सक्नु can express capability or possibility, while पाउनु may express permission or obtaining something depending on context. पर्छ and related forms can express requirement.

“You may submit another document” can be तपाईंले अर्को कागजात बुझाउन सक्नुहुन्छ in a suitable context, communicating the option. “You must submit another document” needs a necessity construction such as अर्को कागजात बुझाउनुपर्छ.

A natural sentence may still be wrong if it converts an option into a duty. Always check the original rule rather than choose the strongest Nepali expression merely to sound official.

Negation: छैन, होइन and negative verbs

Nepali uses different negatives depending on existence, identity, location, state and action. मलाई थाहा छैन means “I don’t know.” यो सही होइन means “This is not correct.” किताब यहाँ छैन means “The book is not here.”

A source saying a document does not exist is different from saying it has not arrived yet. A statement of nonreceipt is different from a refusal or rejection.

Choose the negative construction according to what English actually denies. A grammar checker cannot determine whether the issuer intended “not ready” or “not accepted.”

अझै छैन and अब छैन: time distinctions

A phrase involving अझै … छैन can express “not yet” in suitable context. कागजात अझै आएको छैन means “The document has not arrived yet.” This leaves open a future arrival.

अब … छैन can communicate a no-longer reading in an appropriate context. “No longer available” differs from “not yet available,” and readers may act differently.

Mark yet, already, still, again and no longer before translating a status message. Those small words often carry the core service information.

Not everyone passed is not nobody passed

English “Not all students passed” does not mean “No students passed.” Nepali सबै विद्यार्थी उत्तीर्ण भएका होइनन् can communicate that not all passed in suitable context. The exact phrasing can be made more explicit if an official report must avoid any ambiguity.

A claim that nobody passed would be stronger and factually different. Do not select it merely because it is shorter.

Likewise, check all, some, none, only, at most and at least together with the negative. Quantifier scope is especially important in school results and public statistics.

Conditional sentences: यदि, भने and exceptions

Nepali uses constructions involving यदि and भने for conditions. यदि पानी पर्‍यो भने कार्यक्रम स्थगित हुनेछ can mean “If it rains, the event will be postponed.” The outcome depends on the weather condition; postponement has not already been asserted.

“Only if” is a stronger restriction than an ordinary “if.” “Unless requested” introduces an exception to a default instruction. Both should remain explicit where they affect rights.

Write a mini decision tree from the English: default action, necessary condition, exception and outcome. Check whether a Nepali reader would follow the same rule in each possible situation.

Before, after and until: preserve the actual sequence

Nepali uses familiar constructions involving अघि, पछि and सम्म for before, after and until/up to in relevant contexts. “Disconnect electricity before cleaning” is different from “disconnect after cleaning.”

A medical or technical instruction may also contain waiting periods and maximum limits. The correct order can determine whether an action is safe or valid.

Before translating a long procedure, make a numbered source sequence. The Nepali should cause a reader to perform the same steps in the same order.

Bikram Sambat and the Gregorian calendar: do not convert casually

Nepal uses the Bikram Sambat (BS) calendar extensively in official and everyday contexts, while English source documents may use the Gregorian calendar. The year number and month system differ. Translating English into Nepali does not automatically authorize converting the date.

A source 03/04/2026 is already ambiguous between March 4 and 3 April under different numeric date conventions. Confirm the Gregorian date first. Only convert calendars when requested, with a reliable conversion source and an explicit indication of which calendar is being used.

An applicant who receives the wrong date could miss a deadline even when the rest of the Nepali is excellent. Keep date conversion separate from prose translation.

Weekdays, clock times and time zones

शुक्रबार means Friday and भोलि means tomorrow. But an important deadline should give the exact date and time rather than rely on a relative phrase whose meaning changes across time zones.

Nepal Standard Time has a distinctive offset from UTC, and a Singapore-based issuer may have a different clock. Do not silently assume a user lives in Kathmandu or that the cutoff is the same local hour everywhere.

Preserve the issuer’s original time zone or arrange an authorized conversion. A translation should not be presented as though a time conversion happened when it did not.

Numbers, lakh, crore and arab

Nepali readers may encounter South Asian numerical units such as लाख (100,000), करोड (10,000,000) and अर्ब (1,000,000,000). English “one billion” in modern short-scale usage is one thousand million, equal to one अरब in this system.

For financial, population and statistical data, verify the exact digits rather than convert from memory. A misread written unit can change the value by a factor of ten, one hundred or more.

A translation may display Devanagari digits or Western digits according to house style, but the mathematical value must remain unchanged.

Currency does not change just because the language changes

A price in SGD, USD or EUR remains in that currency when expressed in Nepali. An INR or NPR amount is not a translation of a dollar amount unless conversion was explicitly requested.

If currency conversion is authorized, it requires an exchange rate, valuation date and rounding rule. The translated copy should label the converted amount clearly rather than silently substituting it for the original.

Check discounts, taxes, delivery fees, unit prices and total amounts separately. An inaccurate financial term can mislead even when the language is fluent.

Official names, personal identity and qualifications

A person’s name may have an official Latin-script form in travel documents and a Nepali spelling. A translator should preserve the recognized identity string required by the particular form, rather than invent a new transliteration from a dictionary.

Government departments, universities, examination names and certificates also have specific identities. A Singapore qualification should not be renamed after a Nepali examination merely because students may be the same age.

In public-facing educational prose, explain the unfamiliar system if useful. In legal identity fields, keep the exact names, reference numbers, email addresses and postcodes that the source authority requires.

A complete English-to-Nepali customer-service email

English: “Thank you for contacting us. We have received your request and will reply within three working days. Please do not submit the form again unless we ask you to.”

Nepali: हामीलाई सम्पर्क गर्नुभएकोमा धन्यवाद। हामीले तपाईंको अनुरोध प्राप्त गरेका छौँ र तीन कार्यदिनभित्र जवाफ दिनेछौँ। हामीले अनुरोध नगरेसम्म कृपया फाराम पुनः नबुझाउनुहोस्।

The first sentence acknowledges contact, the second reports receipt and a working-day reply window, and the third retains the exception to no resubmission. The message does not state approval or promise a final decision by that time.

An organization must clarify its own working-day calendar and whether the item is an application, complaint or general inquiry. Translation is not a substitute for verifying the issuer’s real procedure.

Refund status: received is not paid

English: “We have received your refund request. It is under review. You do not need to submit another request now.”

Nepali: हामीले तपाईंको रकम फिर्ता गर्ने अनुरोध प्राप्त गरेका छौँ। यसको अहिले समीक्षा भइरहेको छ। हाल अर्को अनुरोध बुझाउन आवश्यक छैन।

The statement confirms receipt, ongoing review and lack of a present requirement to resubmit. It does not say money has been paid back or that the request has been approved.

Use the financial institution’s approved Nepali terms for refund and reversal. A translator should verify the backend process status before publishing a confirmation message.

Website buttons: “Apply” is not a single verb

English Apply can refer to submitting an application, using a discount, activating a filter or putting on a medical product. Nepali आवेदन दिनुहोस् may suit a formal application; applying a digital filter needs a different action label.

“Save” may mean saving a draft, “Cancel” may close a dialog or cancel a paid booking, and “Delete” may remove a row or permanently erase a whole account. The action determines the wording.

Translate buttons together with the actual screen, error messages, progress states, confirmations and email follow-ups. A Nepali reader should know what a click will do.

Upload and download: protect the transfer direction

Uploading sends a file from a device to a service; downloading retrieves a file from one. Contemporary Nepali interfaces may use familiar loanwords or local equivalents, but the direction must remain correct.

A user asked to upload identity documents should not be told to download them. A student who needs to download a worksheet should not be directed to submit a new one.

Test the real workflow, including file selection, transmission, failure and completion messages. A label claiming success while an upload is still pending is another form of inaccurate translation.

Product safety: exact order and prohibition

English: “Disconnect the device from the power supply before cleaning. Do not immerse the adapter in water.”

Nepali: सफा गर्नुअघि उपकरणलाई विद्युत् आपूर्तिबाट अलग गर्नुहोस्। एडाप्टरलाई पानीमा नडुबाउनुहोस्।

The timing and prohibition are the essential facts. If the manufacturer’s manual also specifies cooling time, maximum temperature or a cleaning method, those conditions must remain unchanged.

Do not add unapproved technical steps based on intuition. Specialist review is important because a correct sentence with an incorrect limit can still be dangerous.

Mathematics: small relational words change the answer

Mathematics problems depend on more than, less than, at most, at least, each and remaining. A translator who reverses an upper bound and lower bound changes the equation even when every numeral is copied correctly.

A Nepali word problem should preserve the given values, the unknown, the required method and the requested presentation. “Show your working” is not the same as “write only the final answer.”

Check a representative translated question by solving it from the Nepali wording alone. If the result differs from the English version, a semantic relation has been lost.

Scientific evidence: association is not causation

English: “The findings suggest an association, but they do not establish causation.”

Nepali: नतिजाहरूले सम्भावित सम्बन्धको संकेत गर्छन्, तर कारण र परिणामबीचको सम्बन्ध प्रमाणित गर्दैनन्।

The translation preserves a suggested association without claiming causal proof. A version using a word meaning “prove” would strengthen the source’s evidence.

Research translation includes sample sizes, statistical values, methods, graph labels and citations. Verify them separately from the prose. A readable paragraph with a changed figure is inaccurate.

Idioms and everyday social communication

English “break the ice” usually means easing social awkwardness, not physically breaking ice. A Nepali translation can explain reducing hesitation or making people comfortable rather than trying to translate the image literally.

“Let’s touch base tomorrow” often means having a brief update. The translator should preserve whether it is a proposal, meeting request or explicit promise to call.

For creative copy, adaptation can help preserve tone, but factual claims must remain honest. A product that “may help” cannot be said to guarantee a result simply because a stronger phrase sounds attractive.

English words with several possible meanings

“Application” may refer to a job request, an official form, a software app or using a method. Nepali आवेदन suits some formal applications, while software and applying a technique require other wording.

“Charge” may be a fee, electrical action or accusation. “File” can mean a digital document or formally submitting something. “Claim” may be a research statement or insurance request.

Define the English sense in a short paraphrase first. “Apply for the job” and “apply this filter” are different events. Only after identifying the event should you choose Nepali vocabulary.

AI English-to-Nepali translation: specify respect and accuracy

AI can produce quick Nepali drafts, but it may use an inappropriate familiar verb for an unknown adult, mishandle -ले, choose a wrong postposition or overstate an application status.

A strong prompt is: “Translate into clear contemporary standard Nepali for adult readers in Nepal. Use respectful तपाईं address and corresponding honorific verb forms. Preserve names, dates, currency, numbers, negatives, conditions and certainty. Do not invent approvals or convert calendars. Flag source ambiguity.”

After drafting, ask for a bilingual difference audit. Have any actors, recipients, obligations, dates or process stages changed? A second model’s agreement is not proof of correctness. Important work requires qualified review.

Three quality-control passes before publication

First: source fidelity. Compare English and Nepali clause by clause. Check people, actions, conditions, negative scope, dates, quantities and process status. Fix meaning changes first.

Second: natural Nepali. Hide the English. Check respectful forms, verb agreement, postpositions, noun relationships and whether sentences read fluently in the intended register.

Third: production checks. Test Devanagari characters, fonts, form fields, links, calendar labels, time zones, PDF export, copy-and-paste and mobile layout. A page is only useful when readers can act on it.

Keep a glossary and a log of corrections with explanations. Repeated errors become focused checks for the next article.

Twelve English-to-Nepali practice examples

1. “Thank you.” धन्यवाद। A useful polite expression.

2. “Please wait here.” कृपया यहाँ पर्खनुहोस्। A respectful instruction.

3. “I am reading a book.” म किताब पढ्दै छु। An ongoing activity.

4. “I read the book yesterday.” मैले हिजो किताब पढेँ। A completed transitive past event.

5. “I went home.” म घर गएँ। An intransitive past with a different subject pattern.

6. “We received your request.” हामीले तपाईंको अनुरोध प्राप्त गरेका छौँ। Receipt, not approval.

7. “The application is under review.” आवेदनको समीक्षा भइरहेको छ। The review is ongoing.

8. “Please send the document.” कृपया कागजात पठाउनुहोस्। A respectful request.

9. “You do not need to register again.” तपाईंले फेरि दर्ता गर्नुपर्दैन। A lack of necessity.

10. “Only members may enter.” सदस्यहरूलाई मात्र प्रवेश अनुमति छ। Exclusivity is preserved.

11. “Not all students passed.” सबै विद्यार्थी उत्तीर्ण भएका होइनन्। This does not claim that nobody passed.

12. “The price may change.” मूल्य परिवर्तन हुन सक्छ। A possibility rather than a certainty.

Each example becomes reusable when you can explain the grammar. Why is मैले used in one past sentence but म in the other? Why does a respectful addressee change the verb? That reasoning is more valuable than memorizing the phrases alone.

Six high-impact errors that may still sound natural

Case A: formal versus familiar address. A professional customer notice using तँ with an unfamiliar adult may convey unintended disrespect, even if the core event is understood.

Case B: wrong agent marking. An English “I opened the book” and “I went home” cannot use every Nepali grammatical marker identically. Check the transitive construction and -ले.

Case C: receipt becomes approval. “The application was received” does not mean आवेदन स्वीकृत भयो when that phrase reports acceptance or approval in context.

Case D: option becomes duty. “You may submit another form” gives an option; “You must submit another form” imposes a requirement. A Nepali translation should not swap them.

Case E: not yet becomes permanent failure. “The parcel has not arrived yet” does not establish that delivery will never occur.

Case F: maximum becomes minimum. बढीमा पाँच means at most five; कम्तीमा पाँच means at least five. They are opposite limits.

All six errors may survive a spelling check. Source comparison must test what the Nepali reader would understand and do.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nepali the same as Hindi? No. They share the Devanagari script and some vocabulary but have different grammatical and lexical conventions.

Does Nepali use respectful verb forms? Yes. Forms with तपाईं and उहाँ may differ from familiar constructions with तिमी or non-honorific subjects.

What does ले do? It can mark the agent in many transitive past constructions and has instrumental uses. It is not a universal marker for every past-tense subject.

What is the difference between तपाईं and तिमी? तपाईं is respectful address; तिमी is familiar. Grammar and relationship should be consistent.

Does हामी exclude the addressee? Not inherently. Standard Nepali हामी can be interpreted inclusively or exclusively according to context; specify the group explicitly where responsibility matters.

Should dates be converted into Bikram Sambat? Only when requested and checked. Ordinary translation must preserve the original date and calendar unless authorized otherwise.

Can AI translate Nepali accurately? It can offer useful drafts but may mishandle honorificity, grammar, dates or official terms. Consequential documents require bilingual and specialist review.

Where can I study Nepali grammar? The Introduction to the Nepali Language course includes examples of respectful verbs, case relations and past forms.

What should I check first with limited time? Actors, obligations, negative meaning, dates, numerical limits and administrative status before stylistic wording.

What a Nepali reader understands is the standard

An accurate English-to-Nepali translation gives readers the same information, options, requirements, restrictions and next actions as the original English. Correct honorific forms, postpositions and Devanagari spelling make the message natural; separate numerical and workflow checks keep its meaning trustworthy.

For a broader meaning-first approach, read Master Art of Translation and the Universal Five-Layer Translation Method. For practical grammar, use the Nepali honorific lesson and past-tense lesson. The goal is a Nepali message a reader can trust without needing the English beside it.
