Places in Bukit Timah | Rail Corridor Southern Closures and July 2027 Reopening

Hillview Connect passing beneath the Rail Corridor in the Hillview and Dairy Farm area of Singapore.

Did you know? You can start a wonderful Rail Corridor outing around the former Bukit Timah Railway Station, but a route that continues far into the south needs extra planning through 2027. NParks says the trail between Henderson Road and Spooner Road is closed for improvement works, with 31 July 2027 as its expected Phase 2 completion date.

The important geographical detail is easy to miss: the 2027 closure is in the southern Rail Corridor, not at Bukit Timah Railway Station itself. If your plan is a short Bukit Timah heritage walk, this does not close the railway-station community node. If your plan is a much longer continuous walk south, the closure changes your route.

Rail Corridor update: what opens, what is closed and when

  • Bukit Timah: the restored former railway station and central Rail Corridor trails form an established heritage-and-nature outing; check for local notices.
  • Phase 1: the section from Jalan Kilang Barat to Henderson Road reopened on 2 March 2026, ahead of the previously expected 31 July 2026 date.
  • Phase 2 closure: Henderson Road to Spooner Road remains closed for trail improvement works.
  • Provisional end date: 31 July 2027, subject to NParks updates and phased reopening.
  • Detours: use signed alternatives on public pedestrian or cycling paths, including routes along Jalan Bukit Merah where indicated.
  • Night visits: the Rail Corridor is generally unlit; NParks encourages visitors to leave before dark.

Why has the southern section been closed for so long?

NParks says the works address trail surfaces that have deteriorated with prolonged use. Rather than applying only a cosmetic patch, contractors are rebuilding sections with a stronger foundation, including stabilising the underlying ground.

The works involve heavy vehicles and equipment. Keeping pedestrians and cyclists out of the affected stretch makes the construction safer and lets the work proceed without repeated interruptions. The closure is a planned infrastructure project, not simply an advisory to avoid a muddy patch.

One source of confusion is that the dates differ by phase. An earlier notice gave a 2026 completion estimate for the first stretch. NParks’ September 2026 FAQ says that stretch reopened on 2 March 2026, while the Henderson–Spooner section remains subject to the 2027 completion estimate.

What can you do at the Bukit Timah Railway Station section today?

The station is one of the Rail Corridor’s restored heritage and community nodes. The former railway building, retained tracks, old signal equipment and outdoor paths help visitors picture the railway that once connected Singapore and the Malay Peninsula.

A short outing can focus on the central station node, nearby public access points and a comfortable section of the green trail, without making any attempt to reach the southern closure. Our Bukit Timah Railway Station, heritage and MRT directions guide provides a useful starting point.

In the same wider district, the proposed Bukit Timah–Rochor Green Corridor elevated connection is a separate project targeted for completion in 2027. It should not be confused with reopening works between Henderson and Spooner. One is an additional green connection near Bukit Timah; the other repairs an existing trail farther south.

Can I still walk from Bukit Timah towards Buona Vista?

Rail Corridor access near Bukit Timah and Buona Vista remains part of the central network, subject to specific local advisories. If you want to finish near Buona Vista, check the NParks map of current Rail Corridor access points and plan a suitable open stretch. Avoid treating a broad statement such as “the Rail Corridor is open” as proof that every metre is accessible.

If your ambition is to travel all the way south to Spooner Road or toward the former Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, check the current restrictions first and plan an approved detour. A footpath beside a busy road may be less scenic and less comfortable than the Rail Corridor itself; factor that into your family’s walking distance.

What should visitors expect in 2027?

NParks’ published completion estimate for Phase 2 is 31 July 2027. The notice does not justify telling readers that the path will definitely be open the next morning, nor that every southern access point will reopen together. The official FAQ says reopening is phased.

A sensible way to plan is to check the notice and access map shortly before the trip, particularly if you are organising a group, setting up a long-distance route or hoping to photograph a previously closed viaduct section.

URA is also planning a community node beneath the Queensway viaduct, with a design proposed for implementation in 2027. That is another site along the southern Rail Corridor—not part of Bukit Timah Railway Station. Its new facilities and opening details are subject to separate announcements.

How to walk and cycle safely during the works

  • Follow barriers: do not step around fencing, even if you see other people entering.
  • Read detour signs: closure points and alternative public routes can change with works.
  • Plan daylight: the trail is generally unlit after dark to protect wildlife.
  • Expect mixed use: walkers and cyclists share sections; slow down near crossings and narrow stretches.
  • Watch your footing: NParks issued a May 2026 advisory about uneven surfaces on other sections as tree roots grow and are preserved.
  • Check event permits: activities involving 30 or more participants may need prior permission.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bukit Timah Railway Station closed until July 2027?

No. The southern closure applies between Henderson Road and Spooner Road. It is not the same as closing the restored station community node at Bukit Timah.

Which southern section reopened in March 2026?

Jalan Kilang Barat to Henderson Road reopened on 2 March 2026. NParks publishes this milestone in its September 2026 closure FAQ.

Will all 24 kilometres of the Rail Corridor be open in August 2027?

Do not assume so. A target completion date for one work section does not establish that every trail, crossing and heritage property along the full corridor will be accessible.

Is there a safe alternative while Phase 2 is closed?

NParks has signposted public-road and path alternatives for affected journeys. Follow its latest map rather than an old route downloaded before the 2026 works.

Where to check before your next visit

Checked 24 October 2026. Use NParks’ September 2026 Rail Corridor (South) FAQ for phased dates and reasons for closure, the current closure notice for affected access, official visitor maps and the May 2026 uneven-trail advisory. URA’s 2026 Central Region recreation plan provides broader Rail Corridor community-node context.
