A bulb, motor or buzzer does not work merely because it is near a cell. A circuit needs connected components and a complete conducting path. This guide for children aged roughly 8–10 links twenty words so a learner can trace the path, predict an output and test one change at a time. The age band is flexible; five well-understood words can be a useful first session.
All four editions use the same word numbers, examples, investigation and checking guide. Open the same card in English, Mandarin, Hindi or Russian and preserve the circuit relationship while changing language. Some translations are phrases because accurate meaning matters more than a forced one-word match.
Mandarin uses Simplified Chinese with tone-marked pinyin. Hindi and Russian include approximate Roman reading aids; Russian stress marks are shown for learning. Activities use only suitable low-voltage classroom cells and components under adult supervision. Never investigate wall outlets, mains plugs, damaged batteries or unknown power supplies.

1–4 · Trace the complete path
5–8 · Words 11–15: continuity and materials
9–12 · A flexible seven-day practice plan
Begin with the path rule: one terminal of the cell connects through conducting materials and the output component, then returns to the other terminal. A complete path is closed; a break makes it open. The words closed and open describe the path condition, not whether a classroom box has a lid.
Worked correction: repair the whole path
Worked correction: “The bulb touches one end of the cell, so it should light.” Keep the correct observation that one contact is made. Now trace the whole route: the other bulb contact has no conducting return to the second terminal. The circuit is open. Add the missing wire or contact, then test again. The correction repairs the pathway instead of blaming the bulb without evidence.
A diagram is a model. Lines can represent wires without showing their plastic coating, and symbols can represent components without copying their appearance. A lit bulb supports the claim that the tested path conducts under those conditions; a dark bulb can also result from poor contact, a mismatched or faulty component, or an exhausted cell. One observation needs a careful next test.
Read the map in relationships: cell or battery provides the source; wires and conductors form the path; a switch changes path continuity; bulb, motor and buzzer give different outputs. Then pair closed with open, conductor with insulator, connect with disconnect, and predict with test.
Translations follow this lesson’s context. Everyday English often says battery for one cell, while the scientific distinction is useful when counting sources. Hindi बंद can mean shut, so the definition must keep the complete circuit path visible. Russian цепь can also mean a physical chain; электрическая цепь specifies the electrical meaning.

The shared investigation uses a suitable low-voltage cell, a lamp or buzzer chosen for it, three wires and a test gap. Four dry sample cards represent exposed metal, plastic, wood and graphite from a pencil line. An adult supplies and checks the equipment. The activity records what happens in this particular circuit; it does not declare every object of a broad material family identical.
First verify the tester by closing the gap with a known conducting metal strip. Then disconnect the cell, insert one sample, reconnect briefly and record the output. Repeat without changing the other components. If the control does not work, stop and repair the tester before interpreting any sample. This separates a material result from a circuit fault.

| Known metal control | Lamp lights | Tester can make a complete path. |
| Dry plastic sample | Lamp stays dark after a working control | Plastic resists current in these conditions. |
| Coin, coated contact | Lamp stays dark | Inspect contact; no material conclusion yet. |
| Coin, exposed metal | Lamp lights | Exposed metal conducts in these conditions. |
| Open switch | Visible break | Path is incomplete. |
| Closed switch with full contacts | No visible break and output works | Path is complete under test conditions. |
| Card or component | Observation | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Cell or battery | Provides electrical energy to the circuit. |
| Path | Wires, contacts, tested conductor | Must form a continuous conducting loop. |
| Control | Switch | Completes or breaks the path. |
| Light output | Bulb | Electrical energy transfers to light and heat. |

| Sound output | Buzzer | Electrical energy transfers to sound and heat. |
English · The tester that had to test itself first
Mina and Oleg build a low-voltage tester with one cell, a lamp, three wires and a gap. Before testing samples, they bridge the gap with a clean metal strip. The lamp lights, so they know the source, lamp, wires and contacts can make a complete path.
They disconnect the cell, replace the strip with dry plastic and reconnect briefly. The lamp stays dark. Mina says, “Plastic is an insulator in this test.” Oleg adds, “We can say that because our control worked first. A dark lamp without a working control would not be enough.”
Next they test a coin. At first the lamp stays dark. Instead of changing their prediction immediately, they inspect the path and find that one clip touches a coated surface rather than exposed metal. They move the contact, and the lamp lights. Their evidence now supports the exposed metal as a conductor under these conditions.
They record the same pathway in four languages: cell → wire → sample → lamp → wire → cell. The words change, but the connection does not. Their final note says that results belong to the tested object, contact and circuit conditions—not every object with a similar name.
Answer aloud, point along the circuit path or draw a labelled loop. Use: “I predict ___ because ___; I will keep ___ the same; the output shows ___.” Give a reason before checking. A learner may explain first in the strongest language and then replace the key circuit words with their matches.
1. Why does touching one cell terminal not guarantee a lit bulb?
2. What does a switch change in this model?
3. How do cell and battery differ scientifically?
4. What three outputs appear in the word set?
5. Why must a conductor test begin with a control?
6. Does a dark lamp prove that a sample is an insulator?
7. Why is plastic covering different from the metal inside a wire?
8. What stays the same in a fair material comparison?
9. Why disconnect before changing a sample?
10. How can four languages preserve one circuit explanation?
Checking guide
- The bulb needs a complete conducting route through both of its contacts and back to the other terminal.
- It completes or breaks the conducting path. The switch does not create the source or output.
- A cell is one electrochemical source; a battery is two or more connected cells, although everyday usage may be broader.
- The bulb gives light, the motor gives movement and the buzzer gives sound.
- A known conductor checks that the tester itself can produce the expected output before sample results are interpreted.
- Not alone. Poor contact, a flat cell, a faulty or mismatched lamp, or another break can give the same output.
- The metal conducts as part of the path; the plastic commonly insulates and keeps that conductor separated from touch and other contacts.
- Keep the source, output component, wires, contact arrangement and brief test method the same; change one sample.
- It prevents unintended connections while hands and clips are moving and makes each trial start from a known arrangement.
- Keep the same diagram, terminals, connections and output evidence; replace each label with its matched term.
Use five to ten calm minutes and pause earlier if needed. Use only adult-checked low-voltage classroom components. Disconnect the cell between sample changes, prevent bare contacts from touching directly across both terminals, and stop if any component becomes warm, damaged or behaves unexpectedly. Wall electricity and unknown power supplies are outside this activity.
| Day | Words | Activity | Notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–5 | Match circuit, cell, battery, wire and switch across two languages. | Trace source and path. |
| 2 | 6–10 | Compare bulb, motor and buzzer outputs; add current and path. | Separate source, route and output. |
| 3 | 11–15 | Sort diagrams as closed/open and materials by test result. | Locate the exact break or contact. |
| 4 | 16–20 | Use plastic, connect, disconnect, test and predict in a procedure. | Put safety and control in sequence. |
| 5 | 1–20 | Read the shared tester story and redraw its loop. | Keep connections unchanged across languages. |
| 6 | 1–20 | Answer five questions and revise one with the checking guide. | Distinguish sample evidence from tester faults. |
| 7 | 1–20 | Solve three fault cards and state the next check. | Repair the path before replacing parts. |
If closed is treated as “the switch looks shut”, return to continuity. A switch can look pressed yet fail to make electrical contact, and a path can be broken elsewhere. Trace every connection from one terminal back to the other. The visible switch position is evidence about one point, not proof of the entire circuit.
If every dark bulb is called an insulator result, use the control test. Reconnect the known metal strip. If the bulb still stays dark, the tester has a fault or unsuitable component, so no conclusion about the sample follows. A negative output becomes meaningful only after the system itself has been checked.
If cell and battery are used interchangeably, keep the everyday word but count the diagram. One cell has its pair of terminals; a battery contains connected cells. The distinction matters when comparing circuit sources, while ordinary packaging and conversation may still use battery broadly.
Try three fresh fault cards. Card A has a lamp connected at only one terminal. Card B has a complete metal path but the switch is open. Card C has a verified tester with dry plastic bridging the test gap. Identify the break or tested material, predict the output, and name one next check. Do not replace a faulty component until the path has been inspected.
A useful progress sentence is: “I can trace the whole path, distinguish source from output, keep a control and revise my prediction from evidence.” Translate one circuit explanation without changing the connections. If the term is missing, keep the reasoning and practise the word; if the terms are fluent but the path is incomplete, return to the diagram.
| Fault card | Key clue | Prediction and next check |
|---|---|---|
| A | Lamp has only one contact connected. | Open path; add a conducting return to the other terminal, then test. |
| B | Metal route exists but switch is open. | Open path; close the suitable switch and observe. |
| C | Verified tester; dry plastic bridges gap. | Predict no output; repeat control after sample if needed. |

Ages 8–10 are a flexible guide. An adult should supervise any real circuit activity; learners can also use diagrams only.
Must all four languages be learned together?
No. Start with one familiar language and one new equivalent. Matching numbers let the learner add languages later.
Are Roman reading aids exact pronunciation?
No. They are approximate. Pinyin marks tones and Russian stress marks support reading; original scripts and spoken models remain important.
Can a wall outlet be used for these tests?
No. Use only suitable adult-checked low-voltage classroom cells and components. Mains electricity is outside this lesson.
Why might a good conductor appear not to work?
The contact may touch paint, dirt, oxide or plastic; the circuit may also have another break or unsuitable component.
Is every metal always a conductor in every situation?
Metals commonly conduct, but a classroom result depends on exposed surface, contact, circuit sensitivity and conditions. Report the tested object and conditions.
Is current used up by the first component?
No. In a simple series path the same current continues around the loop; components transfer electrical energy into light, sound, movement or heat.
How is progress checked?
Ask the learner to trace a full path, identify source and output, predict one change, use a control and revise from evidence.
