Future of Bukit Timah | MOE School Terms and Holidays for 2027

Three students in school uniforms work through open books at a classroom table, with textbooks and stationery nearby and study notes on the whiteboard behind them.

Did you know? For Bukit Timah families planning the 2027 school year, one of the most useful future updates is already settled: the Ministry of Education has published the term dates. Yet the first day of school is not identical for every child. A Primary 1 pupil, a Primary 4 pupil and a new junior college student will not all start on the same date.

Quick answer, checked 25 October 2026: The 2027 school year for MOE kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools begins on Monday, 4 January 2027 and generally ends on Friday, 19 November 2027. Primary 1 and Kindergarten 1 report on 4 January; Primary 2–6 and Kindergarten 2 begin on Tuesday, 5 January. Secondary students begin on 4 January. These are nationwide dates that also apply to MOE schools serving Bukit Timah families. Read MOE’s 14 July 2026 announcement.

The four school terms for 2027

  • Term 1: Monday, 4 January to Friday, 12 March 2027.
  • Term 2: Monday, 22 March to Friday, 28 May 2027.
  • Term 3: Monday, 28 June to Friday, 3 September 2027.
  • Term 4: Monday, 13 September to Friday, 19 November 2027 for most primary and secondary schools.

The dates seem simple, but they organise the practical life of a household. They tell working parents when weekday supervision is needed, when a child is returning to a new class, and when to avoid booking a trip that clashes with school.

There is an important exception in Term 4. MOE says schools being used as venues for the first Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) written examinations will end their final term on Friday, 29 October 2027. That does not mean every secondary school closes early, nor that 29 October is the last date of every examination paper.

When are the March, June and September breaks?

  • March holiday: Saturday, 13 March through Sunday, 21 March 2027.
  • Mid-year holiday: Saturday, 29 May through Sunday, 27 June 2027.
  • September holiday: Saturday, 4 September through Sunday, 12 September 2027.
  • Year-end holiday for most MOE kindergarten, primary and secondary pupils: Saturday, 20 November through Friday, 31 December 2027.

A family planning a short trip might find the March or September break most convenient. Families seeking a longer period to visit relatives or arrange learning programmes may look at the mid-year holiday. But holiday length should not be confused with guaranteed attendance at a tuition class, school camp or exam course. Those providers set their own schedules.

The 2027 one-day school holidays parents should notice

MOE has also named Youth Day, Teachers’ Day and Children’s Day dates. Monday, 5 July is a school holiday following Youth Day on Sunday, 4 July. Tuesday, 10 August is the day-after-National-Day school holiday. Teachers’ Day falls on Friday, 3 September. Children’s Day is on Friday, 8 October for primary schools and the primary sections of full schools.

Public holidays can create additional days off or in-lieu arrangements. The safest approach is to check the current MOE calendar before finalising leave or childcare: school-specific arrangements, public-holiday substitutions and operational closures do not always follow the same logic as an adult’s work schedule.

Why the Primary 1 and Kindergarten 1 start dates differ

Parents often remember ‘school begins 4 January’ and stop there. Yet MOE explicitly staggers the first day. Younger children in Primary 1 and Kindergarten 1 begin on Monday, 4 January, while Kindergarten 2 and Primary 2–6 return on Tuesday, 5 January.

This gives some space for pupils starting a new learning environment to settle. As a parent, the useful questions are practical: does the school offer orientation guidance, what are the reporting arrangements, and how will the first week’s dismissal work? Different schools may have different gate, bus and after-school supervision procedures.

For families preparing for a new primary school, our 2027 Bukit Timah P1 registration guide explains the separate admissions changes. Remember: registration rules determine how a child obtains a place; the MOE calendar determines when the school year starts.

Junior college students have a different start

For the 2027 JC and Millennia Institute calendar, MOE lists Wednesday, 3 February as the start of Term 1 for JC1 and MI1 students. JC2 and MI2–3 students start on Monday, 11 January. The term dates and year-end exam arrangements for post-secondary students differ from the primary and secondary calendars.

That distinction matters when a household has two children, one in Secondary 4 and another progressing to JC1. A parent should not copy a primary school’s calendar into the diary of a new JC student without checking.

What about PSLE and SEC 2027 examination dates?

The broad school-term calendar is official; it is not a substitute for national examination timetables. As at 25 October 2026, this article does not treat a circulating predicted PSLE 2027 written-paper date as confirmed. Check the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) when the relevant examination timetable is published.

In 2027 the first SEC examinations will replace the familiar separate O-Level and N-Level certificates for the relevant cohort. The calendar’s earlier 29 October term-end for SEC examination venues must not be read as a complete paper-by-paper SEC timetable. Our SEC 2027 guide explains the qualification and subject-level transition separately.

Children in Primary 6 still need regular practice, reading and revision throughout the year, but a well-designed plan should be adjusted once official oral, listening and written exam dates are known. A draft calendar based on last year’s PSLE timetable is only a planning aid.

How Bukit Timah families can use this timetable

  • Create one shared household calendar for school reporting days, holidays and childcare closures, then check each child’s school-specific notices.
  • Confirm bus, gate and pick-up arrangements for the January return; do not infer these from a different school in the same district.
  • Reserve the March and September breaks for manageable rest and focused learning rather than an impossible attempt to complete the entire next syllabus.
  • Use June for deeper reading, hands-on projects or consolidation, balanced with sleep, play and family time.
  • Treat any national-exam forecast as provisional until MOE or SEAB publishes the actual timetable.
  • If considering tuition, ask about the teaching plan and make-up rules; do not assume a centre uses the same holiday schedule as a school.

A four-term plan that respects how learning works

A useful Primary 5 Mathematics plan might focus first on mastering new concepts, then practise mixed problem types, then diagnose recurring mistakes, and finally review the skills that still need attention. That is different from repeating past papers in every term.

Similarly, a Secondary 3 English pupil might spend the early part of the year building critical reading, the middle of the year improving writing structure, and later months applying those skills in timed tasks. Academic growth cannot be reduced to the date of the next holiday, but the published term calendar makes planning less reactive.

Children who need unusual levels of challenge have an additional change to consider in 2027. Our Primary 4 advanced-learning update explains MOE’s revised high-ability support system, which is separate from the ordinary school calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Does every child start school on Monday, 4 January 2027?

No. Primary 1, Kindergarten 1 and secondary pupils start on 4 January. Primary 2–6 and Kindergarten 2 start on Tuesday, 5 January. Post-secondary first-year pupils have other dates.

When does Term 2 end?

Friday, 28 May 2027. The mid-year school break runs from 29 May to 27 June.

Will Secondary 4 students finish the final term on 19 November?

MOE lists Friday, 29 October 2027 as the final term day for schools used as SEC written-examination venues. Ask the school about its own calendar and examination arrangements.

Are the PSLE 2027 written-paper dates included here?

No. A school-term timetable does not establish the national exam’s paper dates. Verify directly with SEAB when the timetable is available.

Do international schools near Bukit Timah follow the same calendar?

Not necessarily. Private and international schools can use different academic calendars. Ask the specific institution.
