Places in Bukit Timah | 2027 Botanic Gardens–Fort Canning Heritage Festival Preview

Did you know? Singapore Botanic Gardens is already pointing visitors towards a heritage celebration in 2027. Its official events page says the Singapore Botanic Gardens and Fort Canning Park Heritage Festival will return with music, art and guided experiences. The interesting part is not a ticket on sale today; it is knowing what is actually confirmed and what still awaits an official programme.

For anyone searching for places to visit from Bukit Timah during 2027, there are two separate issues. The future festival calendar is not yet published in full, but several exhibitions launched during September 2026 remain available into early 2027. Here is the distinction.

The 2027 festival: confirmed and not yet confirmed

  • Confirmed: the Gardens’ official events page previews a Heritage Festival return in 2027.
  • Programme idea: music, art, tours and experiences celebrating botanical and cultural heritage.
  • Not yet confirmed: precise 2027 festival dates, daily timetable, registration links, guest performers and special activity charges.
  • Previous edition: the 2026 festival ran 5–13 September, with more than 50 free programmes at Singapore Botanic Gardens and Fort Canning Park.
  • Different ongoing exhibition: Funtastical World of Fungi at the Gardens is scheduled through 28 February 2027.
  • At Fort Canning Centre: two exhibitions launched during the 2026 festival are scheduled to continue through 31 March 2027, under their own gallery hours.

Why does this festival involve two different places?

Singapore Botanic Gardens and Fort Canning Park both preserve living landscapes as well as built heritage, but they are not adjacent sections of the same park. The Gardens includes botanical research, conserved structures and an internationally recognised landscape. Fort Canning Park carries layers of Singapore’s earlier civic, military and cultural history.

Together, the venues allow organisers to explore how plants, architecture, art, people and history connect. A performance on a garden lawn and an exhibition in a historic Fort Canning building may belong to one festival without sharing an entrance or a transport stop.

This is an important planning lesson. When a multi-venue festival is announced, the title does not tell you where a particular session will happen. Wait for each programme’s location rather than assuming that all activities are walkable from Botanic Gardens MRT.

What happened at the 2026 edition?

NParks ran the 11th heritage festival from 5 to 13 September 2026. The programme included music, movie screenings, guided experiences, workshops and exhibitions. These are useful examples of the festival’s character, not a confirmed list for 2027.

Among the new exhibitions were Funtastical World of Fungi at Singapore Botanic Gardens, Hidden World: Creepy Crawlies of Singapore at Fort Canning Centre, and Fort Canning Centre: A Century of Transformation.

The fungi exhibition shows how fungi grow, reproduce and contribute to ecosystems. The creepy-crawlies display introduces more than 120 species of insects and arachnids. The historic-building exhibition traces the changing functions of Fort Canning Centre since its construction in 1926.

Which exhibitions continue into 2027?

NParks’ September 2026 programme gives 28 February 2027 as the closing date for the Funtastical World of Fungi exhibition at the CDL Green Gallery and People’s Gallery displays around the Gardens. Indoor CDL Green Gallery hours are normally 9am–6pm, except the last Tuesday each month.

It also lists both Fort Canning Centre exhibitions through 31 March 2027, with post-festival gallery hours of 10am–6pm daily. These dates are exhibition schedules, not the start and end dates of the new 2027 festival.

Our Funtastical World of Fungi guide covers the botanic exhibition in greater depth. Check the actual venue schedule on your chosen day before travelling to either gallery.

How should Bukit Timah residents plan the two venues?

For Singapore Botanic Gardens, take the Downtown or Circle Line to Botanic Gardens MRT, or use Napier MRT on the Thomson–East Coast Line if approaching the Tanglin side. Choose the entrance according to the announced activity’s location; the Gardens occupies a large area.

Fort Canning Park is in the central city, near Fort Canning, Clarke Quay and Dhoby Ghaut MRT stations. The park’s outdoor grounds are generally open 24 hours, but the exhibitions inside Fort Canning Centre have much shorter operating hours.

Do not treat general park opening hours as permission to enter a museum at night. Equally, do not book a morning programme at one venue and a second session immediately afterward at the other without allowing for travel.

What should you watch as 2027 approaches?

  • An official 2027 start and end date, rather than assuming the next edition falls on precisely the same September dates as 2026.
  • A venue-specific schedule showing which activities are in the Gardens and which are at Fort Canning.
  • Whether free programmes require advance registration despite carrying no admission charge.
  • Age suitability, accessibility and wet-weather arrangements for individual workshops or outdoor performances.
  • Any changes to the early-2027 exhibition closing dates and the availability of their galleries.

One practical approach is to choose a single headline event and add one nearby attraction as a backup. A day spent appreciating two exhibits carefully can be more rewarding than racing between multiple festival venues.

Why heritage here is more than old buildings

Singapore Botanic Gardens was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 4 July 2015. Its value also lies in a living botanical and research tradition. The festival invites visitors to consider how the same landscape can be a place for scientific discovery, recreation, culture and memory.

Fort Canning has a different story, reflected in its surviving historic structures and gardens. Visiting both provides a useful comparison: one place highlights botanical research and landscape stewardship, while the other links an urban hill to centuries of civic and cultural changes.

Frequently asked questions

Are the 2027 Heritage Festival dates already confirmed?

No specific 2027 dates are published in the Singapore Botanic Gardens event preview checked on 25 October 2026. A return is advertised, but the detailed schedule is still pending.

Can I visit the fungi exhibition in January 2027?

The current published schedule includes January 2027, with a closing date of 28 February. Check the CDL Green Gallery’s hours and last-Tuesday closure.

Is the Fort Canning insect exhibition part of the Gardens?

No. It is located at Fort Canning Centre in a different park, though both venues took part in the same 2026 festival.

Are all festival activities free?

NParks advertised more than 50 free activities for the 2026 edition. That does not establish that every 2027 activity will be free or that every session will accept walk-ins.
