Places in Bukit Timah | Zhenghua Nature Park’s 2.5 km Wildlife Link in 2027

Did you know? Zhenghua Nature Park is a 2.5 km linear green space that connects Bukit Panjang to the wider Bukit Timah nature network. NParks describes a park of 17.3 hectares with three major entrances, bird-attracting vegetation and a large sand-play feature.

For parents and residents planning a 2027 outing, the useful details are not a future opening date. The park is already in use, but its name is often confused with the nearby Dairy Farm Park Connector, Bukit Panjang Park Connector and Chestnut Nature Park, which have different lengths and activity rules.

Zhenghua Nature Park: a quick guide

  • Location: between the Bukit Timah Expressway, its slip road towards the Kranji Expressway and Dairy Farm Road.
  • Park size: 17.3 hectares; described by NParks as a 2.5 km linear park.
  • Hours: open 24 hours in the official listing.
  • Main entrances: Segar Road, Bangkit Road and Chestnut Avenue.
  • Nearby rail: Segar, Bangkit and Fajar LRT stations.
  • Accessibility: wheelchair accessible according to NParks.
  • Dogs: permitted on a leash, with owners required to clean up.
  • Organised groups: permits required for activities with more than 30 participants, applied for at least one month in advance.

Why is a long, narrow park valuable?

A linear park links neighbourhoods and adjacent green spaces. It may contain a relatively narrow planted corridor rather than a large central lawn. For people, it provides opportunities to walk or jog. For animals, suitable vegetation can form a sequence of spaces for movement, feeding and dispersal.

Zhenghua belongs to the Central Nature Park Network and lies close to Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Chestnut Nature Park and Dairy Farm Nature Park. The fact that these areas appear close together on a map does not mean every patch of vegetation is a public access route.

A conservation connection may be valuable precisely because visitors remain on the path. By leaving some vegetation undisturbed, a nature network can support wildlife while still giving people a managed way to enjoy the surroundings.

Choosing the right entrance

The main entrances are Segar Road, Bangkit Road and Chestnut Avenue. Segar, Bangkit and Fajar LRT stations are nearby, but the ideal choice depends on your preferred park section and where you intend to finish.

If you are travelling with children, start at an entrance that makes it straightforward to reach the intended play or rest area. If you are planning a longer route, choose a suitable start and end rather than automatically returning along the full 2.5 km.

An entrance being close to an LRT station does not guarantee every connecting pavement is entirely step-free. Those needing accessibility arrangements should examine the actual crossing and entrance used.

Birdwatching without disturbing the birds

NParks reports more than 30 bird species, including Olive-backed Sunbird, Flameback Woodpecker, Pink-necked Green Pigeon and Greater Racket-tailed Drongo. Its bird- and butterfly-attracting plantings include Tembusu and Jejawi.

These are examples of species recorded around the park, not a guarantee that a visitor will see all—or even one—on a particular day. A patient observer may hear a call, notice a movement in the canopy or recognise a bird’s silhouette.

If introducing children to birdwatching, stay at a suitable observation spot for five minutes. Record the weather, approximate time and what was actually seen or heard. Avoid feeding wildlife, using aggressive playback or pursuing birds through vegetation.

What is the playground like?

NParks describes a rugged-themed playground with a large sandbox for imaginative play. That makes Zhenghua appealing to families who want a short nature outing with an activity other than hiking.

As with any outdoor play area, check the condition of equipment before use, supervise children and watch for slippery or hot surfaces. Do not move sand or play materials into nearby sensitive habitat. The sandbox is a different feature from a protected stream or forest floor.

What else is connected to Zhenghua?

  • Dairy Farm Park Connector: 2.1 km from Zhenghua Nature Park through the Dairy Farm estate to Dairy Farm Road opposite Hillview MRT.
  • Bukit Panjang Park Connector: about 1.4 km through the Bukit Panjang heartland towards the Zhenghua side.
  • Chestnut Nature Park: a much larger 81-hectare park with dedicated hiking and mountain-bike routes, usually open 7am–7pm.
  • Bukit Timah Nature Reserve: protected rainforest with more demanding hill trails and different visitor regulations.

The numbers matter because a 2.5 km linear park is not the same thing as a 2.1 km park connector. When making a longer itinerary, add the actual route segments, public crossings and return journey rather than assuming that all the distance labels describe one continuous loop.

Our Zhenghua Nature Park arrival guide deals with the entrances in more detail, while the Dairy Farm Park Connector article covers the separate link towards Hillview.

A simple ecology and geography activity

Choose one place where mature trees shelter smaller plants. Ask: what changes from bright sun to deep shade? Which kinds of insects or birds might use different parts of the vegetation? Explain that a hypothesis about wildlife has to be checked by observation rather than guessed from the presence of trees.

Then use a map to compare the park with the surrounding expressways, streets and housing estates. Why might an ecological corridor follow a long narrow boundary? What difficulties would an animal face at a busy road? This helps students see that ecological connectivity is part of urban design.

A comfortable family plan

  • Decide whether the main purpose is birdwatching, the playground or a longer walk.
  • Choose Segar Road, Bangkit Road or Chestnut Avenue as the approach.
  • Check for weather warnings and bring drinking water.
  • Use only public paths, keeping pets leashed and removing litter.
  • Plan a return route and consider the younger or slower walkers in the group.
  • If extending to another park, check that park’s own opening hours and activity restrictions.

What is happening from now until 2027?

Zhenghua Nature Park is an established public destination in 2026; NParks does not describe a new first opening in 2027. The meaningful things to watch are trail maintenance, playground improvements, habitat work and locally announced access changes.

The official 24-hour opening for Zhenghua must not be treated as permission to enter Chestnut Nature Park or Bukit Timah Nature Reserve at night. Each adjoining destination has its own operating schedule.
