WHY ENGLISH?
Describe a paediatric intervention so readers can see what the child, caregiver and professional each did
A paediatric intervention is not simply an adult intervention delivered to a smaller person. Age, developmental stage, communication, growth, sensory preferences, caregiver participation, school context and child-friendly materials can change how the intervention is understood and received.
TIDieR-Children and Adolescents, or TIDieR-C, was published in Pediatrics in November 2025. It uses the original 12-item TIDieR framework and adds 13 paediatric considerations developed through evidence review, expert consensus and a family caregiver workshop.
English matters because child-friendly, acceptable, caregiver-supported and weight-based can hide several operational decisions. Precise reporting helps students and families see who received which component, how dosing and tailoring were decided and what changed in practice without treating reporting completeness as proof of safety or effectiveness.

ORIENTATION
What this guide owns
Current fact check
TIDieR-C was published in 2025 for paediatric clinical trial interventions. Thirteen paediatric considerations reached consensus within the 12-item TIDieR framework, including age and developmental appropriateness, palatability or acceptability, and paediatric-specific dosing.
Canonical boundary
This article owns paediatric intervention description with TIDieR-C. It does not replace consent or assent processes, ethics review, safety monitoring, CONSORT-C, SPIRIT-C or evidence that an intervention works for every child and family.
Worked example
Every chapter returns to a fictional paediatric trial of a guided breathing and sleep routine involving young people, caregivers and trained facilitators. It is fictional, low-stakes and educational; it does not report a real school, clinical decision or guaranteed outcome.
Did You Know? For TIDieR-C, complete reporting makes appraisal possible but does not perform the appraisal, remove bias or guarantee transfer.
Warm up with eduKate’s guides to explaining scientific evidence and asking better questions in class.
CHAPTER 1 OF 13
1. Name the Paediatric Intervention Clearly
Why this move matters
Use a brief name that signals the intervention and relevant age or developmental population.
Did You Know? TIDieR-C builds on the original TIDieR brief-name item.
Design the description around a developing participant
Use a brief name that signals the intervention and relevant age or developmental population. State age, developmental stage, who receives each component and which adult or professional supports delivery.
Reconstruct one child-and-caregiver encounter
Use The report names a Guided Breathing and Sleep Routine for Young People rather than wellness support. Follow preparation, explanation, assent-sensitive communication, administration, palatability, monitoring, caregiver action and follow-up.
Explain paediatric dosing and tailoring
Report how dose, intensity or duration was determined and which developmental signs, growth measures, symptoms or practical barriers triggered adaptation.
Keep family burden and safety bounded
A child label does not reveal developmental range or content. TIDieR-C improves intervention description; it does not replace consent, assent, ethics, safety monitoring or evidence that an intervention is suitable for every child.
Practical reader check
- Point to the exact source or method sentence supporting the claim.
- Name the person, setting, date, input and decision rule that could change its meaning.
- Label the remaining uncertainty reported, inferred, contested or unknown.
Student, parent and career transfer
Make one evidence card for “Name the Paediatric Intervention Clearly”: source location, plain-language meaning, limit and next question. A parent or teacher can ask for one everyday explanation and one specialist explanation; both must preserve the same conditions. This habit supports paediatrics, nursing, psychology, education, rehabilitation, clinical trials, child development and family-centred service design without promising a grade, admission, funding decision or job.
CHAPTER 2 OF 13
2. Explain the Rationale for Children and Adolescents
Why this move matters
Describe the mechanism and why age, development, family or school context changes the intervention.
Did You Know? Paediatric relevance should be explicit rather than inferred from recruitment age.
Design the description around a developing participant
Describe the mechanism and why age, development, family or school context changes the intervention. State age, developmental stage, who receives each component and which adult or professional supports delivery.
Reconstruct one child-and-caregiver encounter
Use The rationale links breathing practice to bedtime routines and caregiver support for younger participants.
A plausible developmental rationale is not evidence of effect.

PRACTICE LAB
Build a paediatric intervention decision trail
Student route
- Choose one original report inside this guide’s scope.
- Copy its objective and underline actor, action, context, evidence and intended decision.
- Draw the specific reasoning chain used in this article.
- Mark each step reported, inferred, contested or unknown.
- Rewrite the conclusion so it preserves the narrowest important limitation.
Parent or teacher route
Ask the learner to explain TIDieR-C’s central reporting method twice: once to a classmate and once to a method specialist. Praise a precise correction and a well-stated unknown; both show disciplined attention to evidence.
Early-career route
Create a one-page TIDieR-C audit with source link, date checked, scope, method logic, decisive wording, contrary evidence, limit and next action. A colleague should be able to continue without guessing.
Decision rule
If a shorter explanation removes the condition that made the original claim true, it is not clearer yet. Restore the condition.

A cheerful final note
Precise English makes reporting with TIDieR-C more useful and more generous, not less. People can see how their evidence and values entered the work, where disagreement remains and what a responsible next step looks like.
