How Singapore Education Works | International Baccalaureate® (IB) MYP in Singapore: eAssessment, Personal Project and Diploma Pathways

Three students gather around an open notebook at a home study desk, with textbooks and a laptop nearby.

Quick answer: The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP), usually for ages 11–16, combines eight subject groups, inquiry and school-based assessment. It also has a final-year personal project and optional broader external eAssessment. The official MYP certificate can be worth 56 points; the published minimum is 28 points with no required component below grade 3, plus other programme conditions. MYP completion does not automatically grant a place in the IB Diploma Programme.

This Singapore guide separates classroom assessment, ePortfolios, on-screen examinations, school reports, IB course results and the full MYP certificate. Its purpose is to help parents make an entry, transfer or DP-readiness decision using the actual evidence that matters.

What is the IB Middle Years Programme?

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a curriculum framework for learners roughly aged 11 to 16. It is designed as a five-year programme, although the IB can authorise a school to offer at least two years. It connects disciplinary knowledge with conceptual understanding, approaches to learning, service as action and projects. It is not the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC), and it is not the two-year IB Diploma Programme (DP).

A family may encounter MYP in an international school while comparing Singapore mainstream secondary education, a local Integrated Programme or a Cambridge IGCSE route. These qualifications are not interchangeable merely because their students are of similar age. In Singapore, the immediate decision is whether a child can lawfully enrol, whether a particular campus is authorised for MYP, what subjects are taught and what comes next.

An IB World School may offer MYP without offering DP. Another may offer both, and a school offering DP may have no MYP. The IB school finder distinguishes programme authorisation by school. Parents should not assume that attending one IB school entitles a student to another school’s senior programme.

What are the eight MYP subject groups?

The MYP framework includes language and literature; language acquisition; individuals and societies; sciences; mathematics; arts; physical and health education; and design. Students develop subject-specific skills and learn how to connect disciplines. The programme also emphasises approaches to learning, such as research, communication, social and self-management skills.

For example, a student investigating food waste may need statistics to quantify the problem, science to explain decomposition, language to conduct or report interviews, design to evaluate possible interventions and individuals and societies to explore competing incentives. An attractive project is not a substitute for correct calculations or reliable evidence. It becomes powerful when the connections are real and the separate subjects remain rigorous.

School timetables and curriculum choices differ. Ask which languages and sciences are offered, how mathematics content progresses, and whether the child will be adequately prepared for the actual senior subjects available later. The eight groups provide a framework, not a promise that every particular course is offered at every campus.

Does MYP have examinations or only projects?

Both school-based assessment and optional external assessment exist. MYP teachers create and mark tasks against IB subject-group criteria. School reports may include projects, oral work, tests, essays, performances and practical investigations. A child can therefore face substantial academic assessment even without entering the optional full eAssessment pathway.

For the final MYP year, students complete a personal project, a sustained piece of self-directed work that is externally validated under the IB’s assessment arrangements. MYP schools may also register candidates for additional eAssessment components. Some are on-screen examinations; others are ePortfolios of coursework, with moderation of teacher marking.

An important distinction is that not every MYP student sits every external MYP exam. Parents should ask whether the school offers the personal project alone, particular externally assessed courses or the complete certificate route. A school using MYP teaching principles is not automatically registering all pupils for the full certificate.

What is the MYP personal project?

The personal project lets a learner pursue a clearly defined learning goal and create an outcome or product that can demonstrate what was learned. The learner needs to identify a real question or challenge, plan relevant research, develop the work, monitor changes and reflect on the process and its results. The intellectual achievement is more than displaying a beautiful final product.

Imagine a student building a device to measure indoor temperature. An informative project would document the reason for choosing the problem, research and safety constraints, measurement accuracy, early design failures, changes after testing and limitations of the final device. If the student buys a sensor and writes a promotional poster without investigating the underlying science, the project may look sophisticated while showing weak understanding.

A second student might explore the history of a Singapore neighbourhood through oral histories and public archives. A thoughtful report would distinguish a person’s remembered account from a verified historical document, indicate gaps in the evidence and avoid presenting one interview as the entire community’s history. These are practical reasoning skills that carry into the DP Extended Essay and beyond, though the two assignments are not identical.

The project should remain the learner’s independent work under school and IB expectations. Families may support planning, access to materials and healthy routines, but should not produce the research or conclusions on the student’s behalf.

How does MYP eAssessment work in practice?

MYP eAssessment can include on-screen examinations in language and literature, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics and interdisciplinary learning, along with applicable language-acquisition components. ePortfolios are used for subjects such as arts, design and physical and health education, and for the personal project. Language acquisition has both an on-screen component and an internally assessed individual speaking assessment.

On-screen assessments test application of the subject rather than only recognition of familiar facts. A student may have to interpret data, respond to an unfamiliar scenario or organise a written argument. The ePortfolio route assesses work produced through the course, and the IB moderates relevant school marks. Assessment arrangements depend on the actual subjects and the school’s registration.

A parent should request the school’s current assessment guide, registration choices and deadlines. The question is not just ‘Does MYP have exams?’ but ‘Which assessments will this student actually sit, and what official document will result?’ That question prevents confusion between a school-issued end-of-year report, an IB MYP course result and the full MYP certificate.

How is the MYP certificate graded?

The IB’s currently published MYP certificate criteria specify eight required eAssessments, graded on a one-to-seven scale, for a maximum of 56 points. The IB states that certificate eligibility requires at least 28 total points and a grade of 3 or more in every required eAssessment component, along with applicable programme conditions including service as action.

The eight requirements span on-screen subject assessments and relevant portfolios, including the personal project and an interdisciplinary component. Parents should read the official list because the assessment type is not the same for every subject. If a school has registered a student for only some eAssessments, that student may receive course results without meeting the complete certificate conditions.

Example: A fictional learner obtains 31 points across eight components but scores 2 in one required component. They should not assume that crossing 28 automatically awards the certificate. The separate minimum grade rule matters. Conversely, meeting the 28-point threshold is not a guarantee of admission to the Diploma Programme at a particular school; admission is a separate decision.

The IB publishes MYP results to schools under a different calendar from the DP. Its published grading-and-awards page lists results on 1 August for May sessions and 1 February for November sessions. Students must use the school’s current registered session and the official results communication.

What happens if a student has MYP course results but no certificate?

A learner may have a documented result in particular subjects or in the personal project without the full certificate. That record can still show work and achievement. It is not honest to label selected course results as a complete MYP certificate, just as six class report grades should not be relabelled as an IB Diploma.

Schools may also issue school-based completion or participation records. The IB states that a school-issued record of participation can cover learners who studied at least two years and completed particular earlier MYP years without IB external assessment registration. Such a school document is not itself verified by the IB.

When applying elsewhere, provide the exact transcript, school reports, curriculum description and official course results where available. The receiving institution decides placement and prerequisites. A generic conversion from a school rubric to Singapore’s SEC G1/G2/G3 grades is not an accepted national posting method.

Is MYP easier or harder than Singapore SEC or Cambridge IGCSE?

There is no universally valid difficulty ranking. MYP is designed as a learning framework with school-based assessment and optional eAssessment; Cambridge IGCSE provides separate subject examinations and course grades; Singapore’s Full Subject-Based Banding provides national subject levels and the SEC examination from 2027. These are different programme architectures.

The comparison should focus on the actual learner’s knowledge and assessment experience. Can the student solve algebra independently? Do they understand laboratory variables, measurement units and graphs? Can they read a source critically and write a conclusion proportionate to the evidence? These competencies matter in all three routes, even when textbooks and examinations differ.

Two students of the same age may have different gaps. One may communicate ideas easily but struggle with symbolic algebra; another may score well on routine test questions but fail to explain why a model applies. The next teaching step should repair the specific gap rather than treating the programme label as a measure of intelligence.

Can a child move from MYP into the IB Diploma?

Yes, MYP can provide strong preparation for the Diploma Programme, but MYP is not a universal DP entry prerequisite and completion does not guarantee a DP place. A Diploma school decides whether to admit the student, which subjects are offered and whether the learner’s prior mathematics, sciences, languages and writing meet the school’s requirements.

A prospective DP student should look beyond the aggregate MYP report. If intending Mathematics AA HL, compare algebra, functions and mathematical reasoning with the proposed DP course. If intending Biology or Chemistry HL, compare scientific foundations and practical experience. If the learner will take Language A, ensure they can analyse complex texts and write academic arguments, not only converse in the language.

The most useful transition document has four columns: current knowledge, subject learning gaps, intended DP subjects and required bridging actions. This reduces the risk of finding a critical prerequisite gap only after entering DP1.

Can MYP students enter Singapore mainstream secondary schools?

A transfer into an MOE school depends on the child’s citizenship, age, prior education and the applicable official admission or transfer process. It is not settled by holding a particular IB report. International student admission procedures can involve AEIS or S-AEIS where applicable; Singapore Citizen and Permanent Resident situations require separate guidance.

Foreign students must also have valid immigration arrangements for full-time schooling in Singapore. Depending on circumstances, a Student’s Pass or a qualifying immigration status may be required. A school’s academic acceptance does not itself issue permission to reside or study. For a move between foreign-system schools, confirm the student’s pass conditions and school-specific admissions obligations.

Ask the receiving institution exactly what evidence is needed: language proficiency, mathematics work, school records, the current grade, and any assessment arrangements. The receiving school or relevant authority—not an online equivalence chart—controls placement.

How to choose a good MYP school in Singapore

Start by checking IB MYP authorisation for the specific campus. Then ask whether MYP is offered for two, three, four or five years, which subject groups are available, and whether the school enters students for external MYP eAssessment. Be clear about the resulting school and IB documents.

Inspect the teaching. An effective school should be able to show where it explicitly teaches mathematics procedures, reading conventions, scientific vocabulary and disciplinary methods, and how it responds when a learner misunderstands something. Interdisciplinary projects should connect sound knowledge, not hide missing foundations beneath attractive displays.

Finally, check the child’s likely destination: DP, IGCSE, another international system or the Singapore national route. Ask about school fees, travel, learning support and transfer arrangements for the family. A prestigious name does not guarantee the courses or conditions your child actually needs.

MYP parent decision checklist

  • Confirm IB authorisation for the specific school campus and MYP years offered.
  • Ask which eight subject groups and languages the child will actually study.
  • Find out whether the school registers students for external MYP eAssessment.
  • Clarify whether the child will receive school results, IB course results or the full certificate.
  • Request the final-year personal-project expectations and academic-integrity rules.
  • Check ePortfolio, on-screen examination and school assessment deadlines for the cohort.
  • Map the child’s current mathematics, reading, science and language foundations.
  • Identify the likely next qualification and the receiving school’s actual prerequisites.
  • Ask about admission, citizenship, immigration and financial requirements where relevant.
  • Choose support based on diagnosed learning gaps rather than assumptions about programme difficulty.

Frequently asked questions

Does every MYP student sit eAssessment?

No. Schools use school-based assessment, while additional IB external eAssessment registration is optional outside the personal-project requirements.

Does MYP have a personal project?

Yes. The final-year personal project is a required part of the MYP and is subject to IB external validation arrangements.

What is the maximum MYP certificate score?

The published maximum is 56 from eight required eAssessments, each graded 1–7.

Is 28 points enough to pass the MYP certificate?

At least 28 is required, but each required component must also meet the minimum grade and other conditions.

Can I use an MYP report as a Singapore SEC certificate?

No. They are different educational and assessment credentials.

Must a student take MYP before IB Diploma?

No. DP schools can admit suitably prepared applicants from other curricula under their own entry rules.

Does every IB World School teach MYP and DP?

No. The IB authorises programmes individually by school.

Is a school record of participation the same as an IB MYP certificate?

No. School-based records and externally assessed IB course results or certificates must be distinguished.
