Quick answer: Cambridge IGCSE is usually for ages 14–16; the IB Diploma is normally a pre-university qualification for ages 16–19. At the middle-years stage compare IGCSE with IB MYP; later compare the IB Diploma with A-Levels. A student may complete IGCSE and then apply for an IB Diploma, but progression is not automatic.
This parent guide explains the actual pathways in Singapore, avoiding misleading grade conversions and comparing what the student must learn next.

IGCSE versus IB: which qualification comes first?
Cambridge IGCSE is normally a subject qualification for students around ages 14 to 16. It is commonly taught over two years. The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a family of programmes: PYP, MYP, Diploma Programme (DP) and Career-related Programme (CP). Comparing IGCSE with the IB Diploma is often a comparison between different ages, not a direct choice between two exams taken at the same stage.
The more meaningful comparison at ages 14 to 16 is IGCSE versus IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). At ages 16 to 19, families can compare the IB Diploma with A-Levels or other pre-university qualifications. Some international schools offer IGCSE and then IBDP, while others use MYP and then IBDP. Families should ask which pathway the particular campus actually teaches.
How Cambridge IGCSE works
Cambridge International develops subject syllabuses and assessment specifications. Students can take subjects such as Mathematics, English, Physics, Biology, History or Computer Science. Each chosen subject has its own syllabus code, assessment objectives and examination structure. Some subjects offer Core and Extended tiers. Those tiers are not the same as Singapore Full SBB’s G1, G2 and G3 subject levels.
IGCSE results are recorded for individual subjects. The commonly used Cambridge grading scale is A* to G, with 9–1 grading options for eligible syllabuses in certain administrative zones. Ask which exact version the school uses. A family’s next-stage planning must consider the actual awarded grades and completed content, not merely the phrase “IGCSE qualified”.
IGCSE does not by itself specify whether the student will progress to the IB Diploma, A-Levels or a different curriculum. The receiving school is responsible for admissions and course placement.
How IB MYP differs from IGCSE
The IB MYP is a middle-years framework that brings together subject knowledge, related concepts, inquiry, projects and reflection. Schools normally assess prescribed subject-group objectives through tasks designed and marked by teachers. In its final year, optional external MYP eAssessment can produce IB-validated results and potentially an MYP Certificate when the relevant requirements are met.
Cambridge IGCSE centres the student’s programme on selected subject syllabuses and associated external qualifications. Both approaches can require precise mathematical workings, science explanations, writing and sustained practice. Neither is universally easier. The workload depends on the school, subject choices, assessment arrangements and the student’s current readiness.
A parent should ask for anonymised work samples and feedback. What makes a science conclusion valid? What counts as a correct algebraic proof? How are research sources checked? These reveal educational quality more clearly than a brochure’s use of the words “rigorous” or “inquiry”.
Can an IGCSE student enter the IB Diploma?
Yes, if an authorised DP school accepts the student and they meet its published academic and entry conditions. There is no universal rule requiring every IB Diploma applicant to have studied PYP or MYP first. A strong IGCSE record is useful evidence, but admission is not guaranteed and each school may request different results, placement checks or references.
A student planning Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL needs strong algebra, functions and reasoning foundations. A student considering Chemistry HL needs relevant science foundations and competence with measurements and scientific explanations. A student intending a language at HL needs sustained language experience. A high overall school grade cannot always compensate for a missing prerequisite.
The school should disclose its actual senior subject offerings. Not every IB World School offers every HL/SL combination. Request the specific cohort’s timetable and subject entry rules before committing to the school.
Where Singapore Full SBB and SEC fit
Full Subject-Based Banding has been implemented in mainstream Singapore secondary schools since the 2024 Secondary 1 cohort. Eligible students take subjects at G1, G2 or G3 levels. From 2027, the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) replaces N- and O-Level examinations for the relevant graduating cohorts.
An SEC grade cannot simply be converted to an IGCSE grade, and neither can be labelled an IB MYP result. A student transferring schools may have taken a similar number of years of mathematics but completed different topics. A reliable placement plan compares algebra, geometry, language requirements, laboratory experience and writing samples directly.
For a national-school family considering a change, start with IGCSE after PSLE and IGCSE versus SEC. For citizenship, foreign-system school approval and immigration questions, use the international schools and Student’s Pass guide.
Two learners, two different transition gaps
Imagine one child who performs strongly in IGCSE Mathematics and sciences but has never managed an independent research paper. Their bridge to DP may require research-question design, academic citation, literature search, evidence evaluation and project milestones. Repeating elementary arithmetic would not repair the real gap.
Another child has completed MYP projects confidently but makes mistakes with symbolic algebra. Their bridge should focus on functions, rearrangement, equations and checking mathematical answers. More project-management advice would miss the immediate weakness. The point is not which curriculum is superior; it is which knowledge is securely learned and what remains fragile.
Ask the receiving teacher to inspect one genuine recent piece of work. A short diagnostic conversation can locate a missing concept, an incorrect connection, unclear vocabulary or time-management difficulty. Those are different problems requiring different teaching.
University prerequisites and future routes
A family should identify at least two credible post-secondary options before making a change at sixteen. Engineering and mathematical sciences may demand particular mathematics and physics qualifications. Medicine, languages and art or design have different prerequisites and selection stages. A student should not choose a supposedly easy senior subject that closes an intended course.
The IB Diploma is recognised by many universities, but recognition does not guarantee admission. Check accepted mathematics courses and levels, language conditions and grade requirements for the exact university programme. An institution may accept both Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation in principle yet still require HL mathematics for a given degree.
The clearest comparison is programme-by-programme, not based on a general claim that international education always travels better. School calendar, examination session, transcript delivery and the country of application may also matter.
The school selection checklist
Before paying a non-refundable deposit, write the educational route in one sentence: “My child will enter Year X, take Curriculum Y, apply for Qualification Z, and will have the subjects required by their likely next destination.” If the family cannot verify the sentence, the school choice is not yet ready.
Do not add tuition automatically to compensate for uncertainty. First identify where the learner is presently struggling and what the school already provides. Support should reduce stress and secure foundations rather than create a second full-time curriculum.
Ten questions to ask before switching
- Which curriculum and qualification is taught in each year from 13 to 18?
- Is the IB programme authorised for the exact campus and age range?
- Which grades or assessments are required to enter the school’s IB Diploma?
- Which Mathematics, Science, English and language subjects are actually offered?
- Is MYP eAssessment offered, and which achievement document will the child receive?
- What does the school do when a student has a topic-level learning gap?
- Are there legal approval or immigration requirements for enrolment?
- What is the true full-year cost, including extra fees?
- Do the selected subjects satisfy likely university prerequisites?
- What happens if the child changes direction or transfers to another school?
Frequently asked questions
Is IGCSE the same as IB?
No. Cambridge IGCSE is a separate qualification; the IB has PYP, MYP, DP and CP programmes.
Does IGCSE prepare students for IB Diploma?
It can, but the receiving IB school sets its own admission and subject-readiness conditions.
Is MYP easier than IGCSE?
Neither is universally easier. Compare actual subject requirements, assessments, teaching and student readiness.
Do Full SBB G1/G2/G3 levels correspond to IGCSE Core and Extended?
No. They belong to different curricula and assessment systems.
Does every IB school teach MYP and Diploma?
No. The programme-specific authorisation of each campus must be checked.
