How Full Subject Based Banding Works | FullSBB G2 Mathematics and G3 Mathematics: Which Polytechnics Accept Them in 2028?

A smiling student in a blue pinafore holds a pencil over an open book at a classroom desk, with textbooks, a whiteboard and a sunlit window nearby.

From the 2028 polytechnic intake, six named diploma programmes will accept G2 Mathematics or G2 Additional Mathematics in their revised minimum entry requirements, while other polytechnic diploma programmes continue to require Mathematics or Additional Mathematics at G3. The six published exceptions are Early Childhood Development & Education at Temasek Polytechnic and Ngee Ann Polytechnic; Chinese Studies, Chinese Media & Communication and Tamil Studies with Early Education at Ngee Ann Polytechnic; and Outdoor Education at Republic Polytechnic. This is a specific policy change, not a blanket admission rule for every diploma.

There is a second condition that families can easily overlook. The revised Polytechnic Year 1 ELR2B2 aggregate uses four G3 subjects — G3 English Language, two relevant G3 subjects and another G3 best subject — plus one best subject taken at G2 or G3 and computed on the G2 scale. A G2 Mathematics result cannot simply replace one of the four G3 slots. To plan correctly, parents must check the five-position aggregate and the diploma’s separate Maths minimum.

  • Six named exceptions: the courses and polytechnics listed below, under the revised ELR2B2-A arrangements.
  • General diploma position: other polytechnic courses still require G3 Mathematics or Additional Mathematics through the aggregate and/or minimum entry requirements.
  • Year 1 calculation: EL, R1, R2 and B1 must be eligible G3 subjects; B2 may be G2 or G3.
  • G2 Maths: if eligible for B2, the G2 subject’s own grade is used in the computation.
  • G3 B2: a G3 grade in the B2 slot is mapped down to a G2-equivalent result.
  • Net aggregate: the revised general ELR2B2 cut-off is 22; Nursing has a separately announced 24-point threshold.
  • Do not assume eligibility: the course’s own subject minimums and final 2028 rules must still be satisfied.
  • Alternative pathway: PFP accepts qualifying G2/G3 profiles using its different raw ELMAB3 rules.

1. The six actual diploma exceptions

Polytechnic Diploma accepting G2 Mathematics or A-Math under revised 2028 MER
Temasek Polytechnic Early Childhood Development & Education
Ngee Ann Polytechnic Early Childhood Development & Education
Ngee Ann Polytechnic Chinese Studies
Ngee Ann Polytechnic Chinese Media & Communication
Ngee Ann Polytechnic Tamil Studies with Early Education
Republic Polytechnic Outdoor Education

The list is published in Temasek Polytechnic’s Full Subject-Based Banding guidance, which explains that these six are ELR2B2-A diplomas whose Mathematics/Additional Mathematics minimum is revised from the 2028 intake. Republic Polytechnic separately confirms that among its diploma courses, Outdoor Education is the one with this revised G2 Mathematics allowance.

An institution may change a diploma title, course code or admission details before the 2028 exercise. The six-course list is the official published baseline as of November 2026, not a promise that the final 2028 list can never be updated. Check the course’s final minimum entry requirements once polytechnics publish them.

2. What the exception does and does not mean

The exception changes the accepted Mathematics subject level for these particular diplomas. It does not mean every G2 Maths grade is acceptable, that the student can substitute another G2 subject for English or a required G3 relevant subject, or that a raw total automatically grants an offer.

It also does not imply that Early Childhood Education or Chinese Studies uses no mathematics. Different courses rely on numeracy in planning, data interpretation, budgeting and evidence-based decision-making, but they may accept different mathematical starting points from an engineering or science-intensive programme. Admissions are structured around the course’s learning demands.

3. Understanding the revised ELR2B2 formula

Slot Subject requirement Grade scale used
EL G3 English Language G3
R1 Eligible G3 relevant subject for the diploma G3
R2 Another eligible G3 relevant subject G3
B1 One eligible G3 best subject G3
B2 One other eligible G2 or G3 best subject G2-equivalent

All five slots must contain distinct subjects. If a G2 Mathematics result is used as B2, the family still needs the four other G3 subjects and a diploma-specific combination that allows those subjects into the ELR2B2-A relevant positions. The Mathematics exception does not solve a shortage of G3 subjects elsewhere.

The sum of the five counted values, after deducting permitted CCA points, gives the net ELR2B2. The published general threshold from 2028 is 22 or better, but this aggregate works only after checking each subject’s eligibility and the diploma’s minimum entry requirements.

4. Worked profile: G2 Maths and four G3 subjects

Suppose a fictional candidate has G3 English B4, G3 Humanities B3, G3 Science A2, G3 Mother Tongue C5 and G2 Mathematics Grade 2. For a diploma whose relevant-subject categories permit the illustrated placement, the theoretical ELR2B2 values might be English 4, Humanities 3, Science 2, Mother Tongue 5, and G2 Mathematics 2.

Slot Illustrative result Value
EL G3 English B4 4
R1 G3 Humanities B3 3
R2 G3 Science A2 2
B1 G3 Mother Tongue C5 5
B2 G2 Mathematics Grade 2 2
Illustrative gross total 16

The calculation is 4 + 3 + 2 + 5 + 2 = 16. If the student has qualifying CCA bonus points, the applicable net aggregate could be lower. But it is essential to verify that the chosen diploma accepts Humanities and Science in those particular R slots, that all original grade minima are met and that G2 Mathematics is a permitted B2 subject. This worked profile is a calculation demonstration, not a course eligibility ruling.

5. Why a student with G2 Maths cannot automatically enter engineering

Many engineering and scientific diplomas require Mathematics or Additional Mathematics at G3 as part of the aggregate or the course’s minimum entry requirements. A G2 Maths Grade 1 is a strong result at G2, but it is not equivalent to sitting the G3 curriculum and receiving G3 A1. The SEC grade-mapping policy maps a higher subject level downward for a specified purpose; it does not upgrade a G2 grade to a G3 qualification.

Suppose a learner with G2 Maths Grade 1 hopes to study aerospace engineering. The family must read the particular diploma’s current Mathematics level requirement. If G3 Maths is mandatory, the learner’s strong G2 result alone does not satisfy it. That does not mean the child has no future in engineering; it means a further learning or progression pathway must be explored.

Possible alternatives include qualifying for a related PFP cluster, eligible ITE programmes or later routes into a diploma. The appropriate option depends on the child’s entire SEC profile and willingness to undertake the necessary study.

6. Why Early Childhood Development & Education appears twice

Two polytechnics, Temasek Polytechnic and Ngee Ann Polytechnic, are listed for the Early Childhood Development & Education diploma. A family should treat them as separate institutions with their own campuses, student experiences and administrative pages. The fact that both accept G2 Maths under the revised minimum does not mean both will have identical application outcomes or competition.

A student interested in early childhood work should consider communication, patience, child development, observation, safeguarding and working with families. The programme involves more than a single Maths requirement. Strong language and professional skills matter for the eventual role.

7. Chinese Studies and Chinese Media: not identical diplomas

Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Chinese Studies and Chinese Media & Communication courses both appear in the list, but their educational emphasis differs. Chinese Studies centres on language, culture and related enquiry. Chinese Media & Communication is more oriented towards media production, communication and applied language work. Check actual modules and entry criteria rather than treating the titles as interchangeable.

A student who enjoys Chinese writing but dislikes production deadlines may prefer a different environment from one who enjoys audiovisual storytelling, audience analysis and journalism-style communication. A revised G2 Mathematics minimum does not settle that fit.

8. Tamil Studies with Early Education: a specific route

The Tamil Studies with Early Education diploma at Ngee Ann Polytechnic is another named exception. Families should read its language and course entry requirements carefully. A learner with relevant language strengths may find the programme appealing, but course suitability still involves the level of Tamil communication, the nature of early education and a willingness to work in people-facing settings.

An opportunity created by a revised Mathematics requirement should not conceal a different subject prerequisite. A student may have acceptable Maths but still need a specified language result or other condition.

9. Republic Polytechnic Outdoor Education: learning in real environments

Republic Polytechnic identifies its Outdoor Education diploma as the relevant G2 Mathematics exception. The curriculum prepares students to work with outdoor learning, recreation, planning, safety and related environments. Those fields require measuring risk, communicating clearly, managing groups and applying practical reasoning.

Families should ask what actual activities, assessments, safety standards and physical commitments are involved. Being interested in nature or sports is a useful beginning, but it is different from understanding the responsibilities of an outdoor education practitioner.

10. If Maths is taken at G3, how is it counted?

A G3 Maths result can count in a G3 position where the diploma’s relevant-subject rules allow it, or it may be eligible for B2 with downward mapping. Under the general 2028 B2 mapping, G3 A1–B3 becomes G2 Grade 1, G3 B4–C6 becomes G2 Grade 2, D7 becomes G2 Grade 3 and E8 becomes G2 Grade 4. The specific position matters.

Do not add a G3 Mathematics B4 as four points when it occupies a B2 slot that must be computed on the G2-equivalent scale. Equally, do not map Mathematics down when it occupies a G3 relevant slot. The rule is about where the result is counted, not a permanent conversion of a subject grade.

11. Why Grade 5 and Grade 6 at G2 may not be countable

Republic Polytechnic’s Full SBB page states that G2 Grades 5 and 6 cannot be used for the direct diploma ELR2B2 computation, and G3 Grade 9 is excluded. A student should therefore check the original result’s countability before calculating any total. The fact that a grade exists on the SEC certificate does not mean it is accepted as an ELR2B2 component.

If the pupil’s G2 Mathematics grade falls outside a chosen diploma’s admissible range, the six-course exception is not enough. Another route may be more suitable, or the learner may need further preparation.

12. What about the PFP route?

PFP, a one-year foundation before a diploma, expands from 2028 to eligible students offering all G2, all G3 or mixed G2/G3 results. The general academic threshold is a raw G2-equivalent ELMAB3 of 12 or better, with English, Mathematics, relevant-subject and other grade minima. Students may enter a broad PFP cluster, such as Sciences; Design, Engineering & Technology; or Humanities, Art, Media & Business.

PFP does not use the same four-G3-plus-one-G2 direct diploma structure. A child with G2 Mathematics may be eligible for a PFP cluster even where direct Year 1 admission is unavailable. The family should compare the foundation year, progression requirements and suitable diploma options rather than conclude that no polytechnic route exists.

13. Could a child take more demanding Mathematics later?

Under Full SBB, schools may consider subject-level progression based on academic performance, interest, readiness and total curricular workload. A child who is strong in G2 Mathematics may be offered the more demanding G3 level at a suitable juncture, subject to school guidance and curriculum bridging.

The learning transition is real. G3 Mathematics may require deeper problem solving, more complex algebra, graph interpretation and mathematical reasoning. A higher-level decision should be based on whether the learner can understand those demands, not solely on an ambition to enter a particular diploma.

If the student is already close to SEC, the school can advise which future options are realistically available given the time required. Do not promise that a late subject-level change automatically opens a 2028 diploma.

14. A four-part Mathematics readiness check

  1. Check number operations and fractions: can the student explain why a step is valid?
  2. Check symbolic fluency: can they form and solve equations from unfamiliar situations?
  3. Check representation: can they move among words, diagrams, tables and graphs?
  4. Check independent transfer: can they solve a new form of a learned problem days after the lesson?

A child who memorises ‘move it over and change the sign’ may produce correct routine equations but struggle when variables appear on both sides. A learner who understands equality can reason through harder equations. The deeper skill is more valuable than the label itself.

15. The five-minute course eligibility audit

  1. Name the exact diploma, institution and 2028 intake.
  2. Confirm its ELR2B2 category and four required G3 subject positions.
  3. Check whether G2 Mathematics is permitted in the course-specific minimum requirements.
  4. Verify the original G2 Mathematics grade is countable.
  5. Select valid EL, R1, R2, B1 and B2 subjects without using any result twice.
  6. Apply downward mapping only to B2 when relevant.
  7. Calculate gross and permitted net ELR2B2; compare with the course’s threshold.
  8. Read the other minimum entry conditions and actual application instructions.

The decision is not complete when a calculator displays a number. A careful family also explores the work taught in the diploma, travel time, financial support, course progression and whether the student wants to study that subject deeply.

16. Frequently asked questions

Can G2 Mathematics qualify for any 2028 diploma?

Yes, six published ELR2B2-A diplomas have revised minimum entry requirements allowing G2 Mathematics or Additional Mathematics, provided all other conditions are met.

Do all six courses sit at one polytechnic?

No. They are distributed across Temasek Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Republic Polytechnic.

Can G2 Maths be R1 or R2?

Not under the general direct Year 1 ELR2B2 structure: R1 and R2 are G3 relevant-subject positions. G2 Maths may be used in the permitted B2 position for an eligible course.

Can a G2 Grade 1 become G3 A1?

No. The subject level is different. Official grade mapping applies downward for specified admission calculations.

Does the revised Maths minimum guarantee a diploma place?

No. The full course eligibility, competitive merit and vacancies still matter.

Is PFP an alternative for G2 Mathematics students?

Potentially yes, when raw ELMAB3 and programme-specific subject requirements are met. It is a separate one-year foundation route.

Are these 2028 requirements final forever?

No. The published baseline should be rechecked against the final 2028 course pages, which institutions plan to update closer to admission.
