Will Cambridge IGCSE examinations be on computers in 2027, and will students in Singapore have to stop using paper? Cambridge International began live digital IGCSE components in a limited Early Adopter Programme in 2026 and is expanding digital options in 2027. Its published roadmap includes First Language English 0500 and English as a Second Language 0510 among the components launching in 2027, alongside earlier digital options in selected subjects such as Accounting, Economics and Sciences. Digital availability does not mean every IGCSE paper, school or examination centre must move to a computer. A centre must be eligible, ready and entered for the relevant digital option. Singapore’s Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB) and the national Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) from 2027 are a separate examination system; Cambridge’s international digital-exam rollout should not be presented as an announcement that every SEC subject will become digital.
This guide is for families searching “IGCSE digital exams 2027”, “online IGCSE exam Singapore”, “Cambridge computer-based IGCSE”, “digital vs paper IGCSE” and “SEC 2027 exam format”. The important distinction is between a supervised digital exam at an authorised centre and an ordinary online lesson or home quiz. The 2027 format can matter for student typing fluency, familiarity with on-screen reading and school technical readiness. It does not replace academic understanding.
The answer in one minute
- Cambridge rollout: live digital IGCSE exams started in June 2026 through an Early Adopter Programme; Cambridge is expanding subject coverage from 2027.
- Selected 2027 IGCSE availability: Cambridge’s digital roadmap names First Language English 0500 and English as a Second Language 0510 in its 2027 launch list.
- Earlier subjects: Accounting 0452, Economics 0455 component 1, Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625 appeared in the 2026 limited launch.
- School eligibility: depends on region, examination series, component availability and centre readiness. Ask the examinations officer what the centre will actually enter.
- Paper remains relevant: do not assume every subject or component has a digital option; prepare for the mode confirmed by the centre.
- Digital does not mean unsupervised at home: Cambridge uses a secure exam platform and invigilated centre arrangements, with device, power and security requirements.
- Timing: Cambridge says equivalent digital and paper exams take place in the same timetable session in the June 2027 arrangements.
- Singapore SEC: G1, G2 and G3 are national subject levels under SEAB. A Cambridge digital option is not automatically an SEC exam-format change.
What does a Cambridge digital examination actually mean?
In a live digital examination, an authorised Cambridge centre runs the permitted examination component through Cambridge’s secure assessment platform under invigilation. Candidates access the exam using assigned credentials. It is not simply a PDF sent to the student’s personal email, nor is it an unmonitored test taken from home while searching the internet.
Cambridge’s support guidance says the exam platform restricts switching to other websites or software during a live exam, with various device functions made inaccessible. The centre must follow formal examination-security and technical requirements. Candidate identity, the exam session and the syllabus entry still matter.
Digital delivery is a change of medium, not automatically a change in academic standard. The child must still know the subject, interpret questions accurately, present appropriate reasoning and follow assessment instructions. A student who types quickly but misunderstands a proportional relationship will make the same conceptual mistake on screen as on paper.

Which IGCSE subjects are on Cambridge’s digital roadmap?
| Subject | Code | Published digital rollout information |
|---|---|---|
| Accounting | 0452 | 2026 Early Adopter Programme |
| Economics, selected component | 0455 | 2026 Early Adopter Programme, component 1 |
| Biology | 0610 | 2026 Early Adopter Programme for selected live digital components |
| Chemistry | 0620 | 2026 Early Adopter Programme for selected live digital components |
| Physics | 0625 | 2026 Early Adopter Programme for selected live digital components |
| First Language English | 0500 | 2027 digital launch list |
| English as a Second Language | 0510 | 2027 digital launch list |
This table does not mean that every component of every listed subject is digital. Cambridge’s official availability page distinguishes subjects and papers, and the actual options can depend on the school and examination series. It also publishes a separate schedule for newer subjects. A family should check the exact component and the school examination officer’s current entry choice rather than assume a subject is entirely on-screen because its name appears above.

What happened in the 2026 pilot?
Cambridge reported that more than 2,800 students took its first live digital examinations in the June 2026 series. The early rollout covered a limited number of components and participating schools. Cambridge described the early programme as an opportunity to test the process and gather feedback before expanding further.
This matters because many parents read the word “digital” and assume that a global transition has already happened. It has not. An Early Adopter Programme is controlled deployment, not evidence that all centres have the required equipment, approvals, training or infrastructure. The roadmap continues to evolve.
Cambridge has expressed a longer-term ambition of making a high proportion of Cambridge IGCSE and International AS & A Level subjects available digitally by 2033. That is a forward-looking programme aim, not a guarantee about the mode available to a particular candidate in 2027.

How digital-exam entry differs from simply registering for IGCSE
Cambridge’s June 2027 exam-administration guidance says centres make entries for digital examinations in a similar administrative process to paper entries, but use different entry-option codes. Cambridge supplies a Supplementary Guide to Making Entries for Digital Exams alongside the main entry instructions. If the school does not enter the candidate for the digital option, a parent’s preference for typing is not itself a valid entry.
The same Cambridge page states that digital and equivalent paper exams take place in the same AM, PM or evening session. Families planning travel and revision should therefore keep following the official examination timetable. Digital delivery is not a personal option to sit the same paper whenever convenient over a 24-hour period.
Centres need exam rooms with suitable secure devices, software, connectivity, adequate power supply and trained IT support. Cambridge’s minimum-requirements guidance specifically says devices cannot rely only on battery power. There must be preparation and live support for technical issues. This is an examination venue, not an ordinary computer lab without special administration.

What are Cambridge digital mock exams?
Cambridge offers digital mocks to help centres practise the candidate and administrative experience before live examinations. The January 2027 digital mocks service is scheduled from 18 January to 14 March 2027. Cambridge’s programme information includes a centre expression-of-interest and booking process, so students should not assume they can independently register for a Cambridge digital mock outside the centre.
The mocks provide an opportunity to become familiar with on-screen question navigation, response entry, timing and the exam environment. Cambridge says different question types can be marked automatically, by human examiners, or through a process involving AI and human marking in the mocks service. That statement is about the mock-marking process and should not be used to claim that every live Cambridge or SEC essay is automatically graded by AI.
The family should ask whether the school participates, which subjects and components are available, and whether the mock matches the learner’s forthcoming live examination option. A digital mock is preparation; it is not the awarded IGCSE qualification.

Reading on a screen versus reading on paper
A long passage can feel different on screen. Students may need to navigate between the passage, instructions and response area. Some learners find typing a relief; others miss a paper margin for quick notes. The key is to rehearse the approved interface before the exam rather than assume that familiarity with messaging apps equals digital exam readiness.
In English, teach students to locate the precise part of a passage that supports an inference. Ask them to distinguish a claim from an example, a fact from an assumption and an exception from the general rule. The format may make navigation different, but the reasoning remains the same.
A short exercise uses a notice: “The school library will close at 5pm on Friday for maintenance. Weekend opening hours will not change. Students with reserved books should collect them by Thursday.” Ask the student to identify the affected day, what does not change, and what action is required. A learner who says the library is closed all weekend has lost the qualifier. No amount of typing practice will repair that reading problem without targeted explanation.
How to prepare for typed responses without overtraining
Where a digital option involves typing, practise composing clear answers in the permitted interface. A learner should be able to structure a paragraph, correct an error, use punctuation and review their work without depending on spelling suggestions or outside websites that may be unavailable in the secure environment.
Do not force students to transcribe full essays every night simply because their school may offer digital exams. Start with a short accurate response, then add an unfamiliar task and a reasonable time constraint. The goal is to free attention for reading and reasoning, not to turn every revision hour into a typing-speed contest.
For students with documented access needs, the school must check how approved access arrangements apply to digital assessment. A device being available does not by itself grant automatic extra time or an exemption. See eduKate’s IGCSE Access Arrangements versus SEC.
Worked example: a digital question that still requires mathematical thinking
A student sees: “A club charges a joining fee of $18 plus $12 per month. Write an expression for the total cost after m months, then find the cost after seven months.” The correct model is C = 18 + 12m. At m = 7, C = 18 + 84 = $102. A digital exam may require an answer in a particular field, but the mathematical relationship is independent of whether the work is typed or handwritten.
Now change the wording: “A different club charges $15 every month with no joining fee. After how many whole months is the first club cheaper?” Compare 18 + 12m with 15m. The first club is cheaper when 18 + 12m < 15m, so 18 < 3m and m > 6. Therefore from seven months onwards, its cost is lower. The key is recognising the strict inequality and whole-month condition.
A learner who answers six months has missed the difference between being equal and being cheaper. At six months both plans cost $90. That conceptual error is not solved by using a better keyboard. Accurate learning still requires representation, checking and explanation.
Does the Singapore SEC become fully digital in 2027?
SEAB states that the 2027 Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate replaces the formerly separate national N(T), N(A) and O-Level certificates. It records the subjects taken at G1, G2 and G3, under the national examining and awarding arrangements. Its official overview sets out the annual written examination windows and non-written components. It does not establish that every 2027 SEC candidate will take all subjects on a Cambridge digital examination platform.
Therefore, do not use an international Cambridge IGCSE digital-exam announcement as evidence that Singapore SEC schools must buy particular laptops or that G3 English will be typed at home. Students should follow the national SEAB syllabus and their own school’s examination instructions.

Questions parents should ask the examination centre
- Is our child taking Cambridge IGCSE, Pearson International GCSE or Singapore SEC?
- Does this exact subject and component have a digital option for the intended series?
- Is the centre eligible, and is it choosing digital or paper for this candidate?
- Which syllabus and entry-option code will the centre register?
- Does the digital option use the same timetable session as the paper component?
- How can students use a specimen test or authorised digital mock?
- What device and secure-platform arrangements will the centre provide?
- What support exists for a candidate with approved access needs?
- How will the school respond to interruptions or technical failures?
- When will the final examination entry and candidate instructions be confirmed?
Parents should not independently purchase a new computer based only on a headline about digital IGCSE. Centres provide and control the examination infrastructure under their rules; ask what personal equipment, if any, the school requires for ordinary lessons rather than the live assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Are all Cambridge IGCSE exams digital in 2027?
No. Cambridge is rolling out digital options gradually by subject, component, region and examination series.
Can an IGCSE student take a live digital exam at home?
Do not assume so. Cambridge’s live digital examinations require a secure authorised centre and invigilated arrangements.
Which English subjects are on Cambridge’s 2027 digital list?
Cambridge’s published availability page includes First Language English 0500 and English as a Second Language 0510.
Will Cambridge paper exams disappear?
No universal disappearance has been announced. Check the permitted entry options and your centre’s actual decision.
When are the January 2027 Cambridge digital mocks?
Cambridge lists 18 January through 14 March 2027, subject to the centre’s booking and participation.
Does a digital IGCSE certificate have a lower value?
Cambridge says digital and paper delivery are intended to meet the same qualification standards. The digital mode does not create a different academic award solely because of the device used.
Will SEC 2027 G3 Mathematics be taken online?
The international IGCSE rollout does not answer that. Use SEAB and the student’s school for SEC examination-mode instructions.
How should a student prepare?
First learn the correct syllabus and core concepts; then practise in the confirmed paper or digital format using authorised resources.
