How to Clear a Graphing Calculator Before A-Level Exams | SEAB Rules

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

If your A-Level paper permits a graphing calculator, check that your exact model is approved and clear stored information and programs before the exam. SEAB’s 2026 A-Level rules point candidates to Annex A for memory-clearing steps.

Check the paper and the device separately. The fact that your calculator is approved does not mean every paper permits it. The booklet also excludes calculators with built-in symbolic algebra manipulation, symbolic differentiation or symbolic integration.

  • Confirm that your paper permits a graphing calculator.
  • Match the exact model to the current approved list.
  • Use the instructions for your model to clear stored information and programs.
  • Practise again with the cleared calculator before the examination.

Start with the paper and approved model

Find the syllabus and candidate instructions for your examination year. Check the paper number, then check the approved calculator list using the full model identifier. If you have a related model with a different suffix, verify it independently.

Read the calculator section of the A-Level rules alongside the approved list. Ask your school or SEAB if the device or instructions are unclear. See the approved calculator guide for the model check.

Use the memory-clearing instructions for your model

Follow Annex A of the applicable A-Level booklet where it covers your device. Avoid using a button sequence for another model. SEAB requires candidates to clear stored information and programs, including stored text and formulae, before the examination.

Once the memory is cleared, practise an ordinary calculation or graph using the device as it will be on exam day. Check the settings you need for permitted work. Keep the calculator in the required condition until the paper.
