Calculator Stops Working During a GCE Exam? What SEAB Candidates Should Do

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

If your calculator stops working in a GCE paper, alert the invigilator and follow the instructions given. If the paper permits calculators and you brought an approved spare, ask before switching if you are unsure how to proceed. SEAB’s 2026 secondary examination rules allow more than one approved calculator but prohibit sharing calculators between candidates. Those rules also say a calculator malfunction does not justify Special Consideration.

Before the paper, check two things separately. Confirm that your exact paper permits a calculator and that the exact model appears on the applicable SEAB list. Then test the calculator you intend to use and any spare. Use the rules for your own qualification and examination year.

  • Check calculator permission for the individual paper.
  • Match the model number to the official list.
  • Test the main calculator and any approved spare.
  • Inspect the calculator and its cover for markings or other issues.
  • Alert the invigilator if equipment fails during the paper.

Check permission for the paper and approval for the model

Open the instructions for your syllabus and paper. One paper may permit calculators while another has different rules. Once you have confirmed permission, find the brand and full model number on the device itself and compare them with the current approved list. Similar packaging, a familiar brand or a matching first few letters can still describe a different model.

Check that the original brand and model marking can be read. Read SEAB’s rules for the device and cover. The 2026 secondary booklet restricts formulae, tables, instructions and handwritten material on them, and gives a specific procedure for information that cannot be removed. Ask the official contact about any doubt well before the paper.

Test the device with the work you actually do

Try the functions you use for the paper. For example, enter a bracketed expression, check an angle calculation in the required mode and verify that a familiar decimal or fraction operation displays as expected. Test the keys and screen so you can spot an obvious problem early.

If bringing an approved spare, practise the same tasks on it. A spare with unfamiliar key sequences can cost time, even if it works properly. Pack the devices only for papers that permit them and check the current rules on what you may have with you.

If the calculator fails during the exam

Alert the invigilator and explain briefly what happened. Follow any directions about your device or spare. SEAB’s 2026 secondary rules prohibit sharing, so leave another candidate’s equipment alone. If you cannot use a calculator, look for parts you can still answer and keep any required workings clear.

For example, write the expression a question requires before moving to a part you can finish. Return later if time permits and use any device that staff have confirmed you may use. The official rule makes preparation particularly important because a malfunction alone is not accepted as a reason for Special Consideration under the 2026 secondary booklet.

Worked example

A candidate checks that calculators are permitted, matches both devices to the approved list and tests them before leaving home. During the paper, the main screen stops displaying properly. They alert the invigilator and follow the directions for using the spare. Because they practised with it, they can resume without learning new key sequences under exam pressure.

Check both the model list and the specific paper instructions. Approval of a model and permission to use it in a particular paper are separate checks.

Can I borrow another candidate’s calculator?

SEAB’s 2026 secondary rules prohibit sharing calculators between candidates during the exam.

Can I request Special Consideration for a calculator fault?

The 2026 secondary booklet says calculator malfunction is not accepted as justification. Read the applicable rules for your examination.
