SEAB says GCE private candidates cannot change their assigned examination centre because it is too far from home. SEAB aims to assign a centre near the mailing address provided at registration, but the actual placement depends on which centres are available and how much space they have.
Use the centre assigned for your specific paper. Check each component independently, since oral, practical and written examinations can take place at different venues.
- Check the personalised venue for each paper.
- Plan around the actual reporting time.
- Ask SEAB to clarify conflicting instructions.
- Use the separate official procedure if a major disruption affects travel.
Why the nearest centre may not be assigned
The address supplied at registration helps SEAB place candidates. It does not guarantee the nearest centre. A nearby school may have limited places for private candidates or may not be the venue for that component.
For example, a candidate may sit a written paper at one school and receive a separate Science practical appointment at another. Plan both journeys independently and keep the relevant notice with each calendar entry.

What to do if an address or venue looks wrong
Check the paper code, centre and reporting details on the current document. If an address has changed or two notices disagree, ask SEAB which instruction applies. Updating a mailing address does not itself confirm a new examination venue.
For a missing document, see the entry proof guide. For Science practical, also check the separate practical schedule.

How travel disruption differs from an ordinary change request
If a major rail disruption affects the journey, contact the school or centre and follow SEAB’s directions for your exact paper. The exam-day train disruption guide explains why a centralised paper and another GCE paper can have different instructions.
