SEAB’s 2026 rules for GCE N(A), N(T) and O-Level examinations allow candidates to drink water in the examination venue. The water bottle must be placed on the floor beside the seat. The same rules say candidates are not allowed to eat in the examination venue.
Read the instructions for your exact examination and component before packing. If you need a health-related arrangement or have a question about a specific item, ask the school or SEAB before the examination.
- Check the rules for your qualification and year.
- Follow the venue directions on where to place water.
- Check any additional instructions for a practical or electronic paper.
- Clarify any health-related arrangement in advance.
Where to put the bottle
The 2026 secondary GCE booklet says to place the water bottle on the floor next to your seat. Follow any directions the invigilator gives when you enter. If you are unsure whether a particular bottle or drink is acceptable, check with your school or the official examination contact.
The rule describes drinking water. If you plan to bring something different, check the applicable instructions before assuming that it is permitted.

If you need a specific arrangement
Raise the question before exam day if you need to eat, drink something other than water or bring an item for a health reason. Ask what approval or instructions apply to your examination. If you already have an approved arrangement, read the decision for the relevant paper.
See the SEAB access arrangements guide for the school and private-candidate application routes.
