SEAB says students currently studying in a Singapore government, government-aided, independent or specialised school cannot also register as private candidates for GCE examinations. Its FAQ says a private entry made by a school candidate will be invalidated and any examination fees paid will be forfeited.
If you are hoping to add a subject or sit a different paper, speak to your school before registering or paying. Ask what options are available for your examination year and whether the school can advise on the proposed subject.
- Confirm your current candidate status.
- Take the exact subject and code to your school.
- Ask about the applicable examination year and route.
- Contact SEAB promptly if you have already made a private entry.
Why the school route comes first
Start with your school’s examination coordinator. Explain the subject, level and examination year you are considering. The school can explain its registration procedure and whether the intended entry is possible.
For example, a student considering an additional paper should bring the intended code to the school and ask what options are available. Creating a portal account or seeing a payment confirmation does not resolve the candidate-status restriction.

If your enrolment is changing
If you are leaving a school or your status is unclear, ask SEAB and the school to confirm which route applies before paying. Give them the relevant dates and the qualification you plan to sit. Ask what evidence they need to confirm eligibility.

If you already registered privately
Keep the entry and payment details and contact the school or SEAB promptly. Explain that you may be registered under both routes and ask how the record will be handled. SEAB’s published FAQ describes invalidation and forfeiture for a school candidate’s private entry.

Frequently asked questions
Does this rule prevent a genuine private candidate from taking two GCE levels?
That is a separate question. See the GCE private-candidate guide to two examination levels.
What about the SEC?
Check SEAB’s SEC eligibility rules for the relevant year and confirm your route with the school.
