How Many GCE Subjects Can a Private Candidate Take? | SEAB Entry Limits

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

SEAB’s GCE FAQ says there is no minimum number of subjects for a private-candidate entry. It lists a maximum of nine subjects for GCE N(A), N(T) and O-Level. For GCE A-Level it lists up to five H1 and three H2 subjects, or up to three H1 and four H2 subjects.

These limits describe the published GCE rules. If you intend to sit the SEC from 2027, check the SEC private-candidate instructions for that year. A subject limit also tells you how many entries are permitted, while a course or institution can require a particular combination of grades.

  • Identify the qualification and examination year.
  • Check the published cap and any H1 or H2 combination limit.
  • Verify that every chosen subject is offered to private candidates.
  • Check which results the receiving institution requires.

How to count an A-Level entry

Write down the intended subjects and mark each H1 or H2 entry. Compare your list with both published combinations. For example, four H1 and four H2 subjects exceeds each listed combination because neither permits both counts at once.

This count is one check. Confirm the offering, eligibility requirements and any constraints for the exact subjects before submitting your entry. Ask SEAB if your proposed combination is unclear.

Can you register for just one subject?

SEAB’s GCE FAQ does not set a minimum subject count. If you only need one subject, confirm that it is offered and that you meet its prerequisites. For instance, a Science subject with a laboratory-based component can have a separate requirement.

If you want to use the new result with earlier ones, ask the receiving institution which years and combinations it accepts. The private-candidate retake guide covers that check.

Check your proposed entry before payment

Compare each subject and code with the current private-candidate syllabus list. Keep a record of the planned entries and check the portal’s confirmed list after payment. If you need to change a confirmed entry, check the subject-amendment instructions and deadline.

For SEC subject selection, use the SEC syllabus and subject code guide alongside the applicable registration instructions.
