Graduating From a Singapore Polytechnic as an International Student? Check Stay and Work Separately

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

If you are finishing a Singapore polytechnic diploma and want to remain in Singapore to look for a job, check your Student’s Pass end date and the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) route for graduates seeking employment. ICA lists a Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP) scheme for eligible graduates of approved Institutes of Higher Learning who are seeking employment. Check that your institution and circumstances meet the current requirements before relying on that route.

Keep permission to remain and permission to start work as separate checks. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) says that once studies are completed and a Student’s Pass expires, a student needs a work pass to work and the employer will need to apply. If you received an MOE Tuition Grant, check your agreement and graduate obligations separately.

  • Confirm the date studies end and the Student’s Pass timeline.
  • Check which ICA route applies if you want to stay for a job search.
  • Ask when your diploma and transcript will be available.
  • Confirm the employer’s work authorisation steps before fixing a start date.
  • Check any Tuition Grant obligations with the relevant office.

Confirm the dates before planning your stay

Ask the polytechnic when your studies are considered complete and when it will provide any graduation documents. Check your actual pass expiry or cancellation arrangements. A final class, the release of results and the graduation ceremony may fall on different dates. Ask ICA which dates and documents matter for your situation.

Write down the last day of study, the current immigration end date and when your results or diploma will be available. If you plan to remain in Singapore between those dates, ask ICA which instructions apply and what to do if a new application is still pending.

Check the graduate job-search route

Open ICA’s page for graduates of approved Institutes of Higher Learning seeking employment. ICA lists educational certificates and transcripts among the required documents, as well as a travel document and photo. Use its current requirements and ask what applies if your graduation documents will arrive later. ICA’s page states that this particular application does not require a local sponsor.

Keep a copy of the application reference and official messages. If you already hold another valid immigration status, ask which instructions apply to you. Use confirmed permission and dates when making travel, accommodation or other commitments.

Confirm permission to work before agreeing to start

Tell the employer your current status and the date you expect your studies or pass arrangement to end. Ask who will handle the relevant work-pass application and when you will receive confirmation that you can start. Put the proposed job start and the confirmed authorisation date on separate lines. If they differ, ask the employer which date it can confirm.

MOM also describes a limited vacation situation for eligible students waiting for final results or convocation. Check the actual academic period and status before assuming it applies. A job-search plan and a planned start date have different requirements.

Keep the Tuition Grant record separate

If you signed a Tuition Grant agreement, review the current instructions for your post-graduation obligation and any reporting it requires. Ask the grant administrator about your own circumstances if you plan further studies or have a period without employment. Keep the agreement and correspondence alongside your education records. Immigration and employment permissions each have their own official process.

Worked example

A student expects final results before receiving the diploma and has an interview planned. They ask the polytechnic for the formal completion date, check ICA’s graduate route and ask which documents will be available in time. They track the job search separately and tell the employer they will confirm a start date once the required work authorisation is in place.

The student also checks their Tuition Grant agreement and records the relevant contact. They now have three separate tasks on the calendar: the immigration arrangement, any work authorisation and the grant follow-up.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stay in Singapore just because I am waiting for convocation?

Check your current immigration permission and its dates. Ask ICA which route applies if the Student’s Pass ends before the ceremony or job search is complete.

Does a graduate job-search LTVP establish permission to work?

Check the relevant MOM requirements and ask the employer what authorisation it must obtain before you start. The ICA graduate route concerns staying to seek employment.

Does my Tuition Grant bond decide which work pass I need?

Confirm the work authorisation through MOM and the employer. Use the grant administrator’s instructions to check the agreement obligations separately.
