If you hold a Student’s Pass for your Singapore secondary school and have accepted a polytechnic place, ask the polytechnic how to apply for a Student’s Pass under the new institution. The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) says that a student changing schools must apply under the new school following successful admission. Use ICA’s procedure for approved Institutes of Higher Learning and the instructions provided by the polytechnic.
Write down the dates for both institutions and the current pass. Confirm who handles the end of the secondary-school arrangement, what the polytechnic needs before the new application and how you will know the formalities are complete. If you study on a different valid pass, check whether you meet ICA’s exemption conditions for your circumstances.
- Confirm the old pass type, institution and expiry.
- Read the polytechnic’s enrolment and Student’s Pass instructions.
- Find out which school handles each step and what evidence it needs.
- Ask ICA about any gap in permission to stay or a travel conflict.
- Keep separate confirmations for course enrolment and immigration formalities.
Start with the pass you actually hold
Look up the current immigration record and copy its validity date. If it is a Student’s Pass, record the institution it covers. If you hold a Dependant’s Pass or another status, use the relevant ICA guidance to check whether you need a Student’s Pass for the new studies. Tell the polytechnic if that status is expected to change before the course starts.
Avoid making decisions from a classmate’s timeline. Two students starting the same diploma may hold different passes or have different paperwork. Give the institution your exact pass type, the expiry date and the intake you are joining.

Ask the polytechnic when you can start the new process
Open your offer and enrolment instructions. Find the section on international students and check who sends any registration information needed for ICA. Ask when you will receive it and what you should complete first. Follow the institution’s current instructions for the approved institute category.
Keep the student’s identity details consistent across the admission and pass records. If the passport was recently renewed or a name appears differently on the documents, ask which record needs to be updated before you proceed. Use the official document submission channel and save your application reference.

Check what happens between the two schools
Add your last day at secondary school, the current pass validity and the polytechnic start date to one calendar. Ask the former school which steps it handles when studies end. Ask the polytechnic when the new process can begin and how it will advise you about outstanding formalities. Contact ICA if those dates leave a question about your stay or planned travel.
An offer, an application and a completed Student’s Pass process are separate milestones. Keep the messages for each so you can identify which step is actually confirmed. If you need to travel, give ICA the relevant dates and check the instructions for your own position before relying on a booking.

Worked example
A student finishes secondary school and accepts a polytechnic offer. The parent checks the pass and learns it relates to the former school. They ask that school about its end-of-study process and ask the polytechnic when the new application information will be available. The student puts both answers beside the course start date.
When a family trip is proposed, they check the dates with the relevant official instructions and keep the application reference handy. They continue to track enrolment through the polytechnic separately, including any actions that can be completed while the pass process is underway.
