If the details on your PSLE barcode label look wrong, raise your hand and show the label to the invigilator before sticking it onto the booklet or answer sheet. If you have already attached it, tell the invigilator and follow their instructions. This is a straightforward check you can practise before exam day.
SEAB’s published 2026 rules say that the invigilator issues the personalised label and that pupils should check its details and place it in the allocated space. Use those instructions to rehearse, then follow the instructions issued for PSLE 2027 and the paper you are sitting.
- Look at the label when the invigilator gives it to you.
- Check the printed details against the information you have been given.
- Ask the invigilator if something differs or you cannot read it.
- Use the allocated space once the details have been checked.

Check the label and the space separately
Look at the details printed on the label first. Then find the space on the cover that the instructions identify for it. If the paper has both a question booklet and a separate answer sheet, pay attention to which material the invigilator asks you to label.
If you are told to write your index number, do so where directed. Treat that as a separate instruction. A pupil who has written a number still needs to listen for directions about the label.

Worked example | The label looks unfamiliar
During a practice paper, Nadia receives a label with an index number ending in 31. The practice details her teacher gave her end in 13. Nadia raises her hand and says, “I think the number on this label is different. Could you check it, please?” She waits for the teacher’s direction before attaching it.
In a second rehearsal, Nadia notices the issue after attaching the label. She keeps the booklet in front of her and tells the teacher what happened. In the actual exam, follow the invigilator’s instructions before trying to peel off a label, write over it or move it.

Rehearse the check once at home
Use a fictional name and index number on two slips of paper. Make one match and change a digit on the other. Ask your child to show where the label would go and what they would say if it looked wrong. Then repeat with a matching label so they can practise continuing calmly once the check is done.
