How to Shade a SEAB GCE Multiple-Choice Answer Sheet Without Skipping a Row

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

For a GCE paper using a Personalised Multiple Choice Answer Sheet (PMCAS), SEAB’s 2026 secondary examination rules specify a 2B pencil and a soft eraser for changes. Follow the instructions for your particular paper and the directions from the invigilator. If the sheet or its particulars appear wrong, alert the invigilator before trying to change them yourself.

The simplest way to avoid shifting a run of answers is to match the question number to the sheet before shading each answer, especially after skipping a question. If you change an answer, use the permitted eraser and check that the intended response remains clear. Build a short numbering check into the time you leave for review.

  • Pack the stationery specified for your paper.
  • Check the sheet and listen to the instructions.
  • Match the question number to the answer row.
  • Recheck the row when you return to a skipped item.
  • Review changed answers and numbering before time ends.

Get the paper and answer sheet ready

Bring the stationery listed in your exam instructions. The 2026 secondary rules say to use a 2B pencil to shade the PMCAS and a soft eraser if you wish to change an answer. Check the requirements for your other components separately. Materials used for a written response may differ from those used for a multiple-choice sheet.

When you receive the sheet, follow the invigilator’s instructions on checking particulars and starting. If something is missing, appears damaged or seems to belong to a different candidate or paper, alert the invigilator. Use the directions you receive for that situation.

Check the number before shading

Read the question number in the booklet, find the corresponding row and check the option before marking it. This takes a moment and is particularly useful after leaving a question for later. Keep your place by checking the printed number rather than assuming that the next row matches the next item you decided to answer.

For example, if you skip Question 12 and answer Question 13, find row 13 before shading. When you return to Question 12, locate its row explicitly. Rehearse this routine with practice questions so you can do it calmly during the exam.

Review changes and gaps before time ends

If you change an answer, erase the old mark with the permitted soft eraser and check the row again before shading the new choice. In the final review, look for unanswered items you intended to return to and scan the numbers around them. Use the time available and follow the instructions to stop when directed.

If the answer sheet becomes damaged or you are unsure how to handle a mark, tell the invigilator. Give a brief description of the issue and follow the official directions. Keep your focus on the remaining work while the matter is being handled.

Worked example

A candidate leaves Question 18 and answers the next three. Before shading Question 19 they locate row 19, then repeat the check for each response. When they return to Question 18, they find its row and shade the answer. At the end, they review the block around the skipped question and check one response they changed.
