Renewed Your Child’s Passport in Singapore? How to Update Their Student’s Pass and School Record

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

If your child holds a Singapore Student’s Pass and receives a new passport, notify the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) within 14 days of the change. ICA directs Student’s Pass holders to update passport number, issue date and expiry date online and to upload a clear image of the new passport biodata page. Ask your child’s school separately how to update its enrolment record.

First check whether the renewal changed only the passport details. ICA lists a different procedure for changes to personal particulars such as name, date of birth or sex, and says a new nationality requires a new Student’s Pass application online. If several details changed together, check ICA’s instructions or ask which procedure to use before sending the documents.

  • Compare the new passport with the details currently recorded.
  • Identify whether passport details, personal particulars or nationality changed.
  • Update ICA through the required route and keep the reference.
  • Ask the school how to update the student’s record securely.
  • If travel is close, check the status and confirm which documents to use.

Start by checking what changed

Put the old passport details and the new biodata page side by side. Compare the passport number, issue date and expiry date. Then check the child’s name, date of birth, sex and nationality. A routine passport renewal can change only the first set of details, while a name correction or another change may require a different procedure.

Write down the change in plain language. For example, “The new passport has a different number and expiry date. The name, date of birth, sex and nationality are the same.” If the change is more complicated, say exactly which fields differ. A clear description helps ICA or the school answer the question you actually have.

Update ICA using the route for your situation

ICA’s Student’s Pass change page distinguishes routine online passport updates from personal-particular changes that call for an in-person replacement procedure. For a routine renewal, use the online route listed on that page and prepare a clear image of the new passport biodata page. Check that the image includes the whole page and that all fields can be read.

If the passport includes a new name or a different nationality, start with the relevant ICA instructions rather than assuming the online passport update handles every change. Ask ICA about the required sequence if multiple changes apply to the child. Keep the reference and any acknowledgement or later confirmation with the existing pass information.

Keep the passport update and the pass expiry separate

A new passport has its own issue and expiry dates. Check the Student’s Pass validity separately in the official record. If the pass itself is nearing expiry, use ICA’s renewal instructions for the child’s type of institution and ask the school what part it handles. Put both expiry dates in the family calendar so a passport renewal does not obscure an approaching pass deadline.

Ask the school how to update its record

Contact the school office through its official channel and ask what it needs to update the student’s details. State whether the child’s name has changed as well as the passport number. If the child is registered for an examination or another school process using the earlier particulars, ask who should check that record. Use the school’s designated way to submit documents.

Keep the school’s acknowledgement separately from ICA’s. A school record update helps the school manage its own records. ICA’s confirmation answers the pass question. If another adult handles travel, share the confirmed status and next deadline with them through a secure method.

Worked example

A pupil receives a new passport shortly before a school holiday. Their parent compares both passports and finds that only the number and dates changed. The parent submits the update through ICA’s online route, saves the reference and asks the school how to update the enrolment record.

When the trip approaches, the parent checks the update status and verifies which documents the child needs for the planned journey. The family also checks the Student’s Pass expiry separately. They have a clear record of which office received each update.
