If your child’s Dependant’s Pass is due to expire or be cancelled while they are studying in Singapore, contact the school and check the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) Student’s Pass procedure early. ICA says holders of a valid Dependant’s Pass, Long-Term Visit Pass or Immigration Exemption Order may study without a Student’s Pass when the stated conditions apply. If that pass or exemption ends during their studies, ICA says they must apply for a Student’s Pass to continue studying.
Confirm the effective end date of the current pass and tell the school exactly when it is expected to change. Ask who at the school handles the Student’s Pass process and what ICA requires for that school type. Check with the relevant authorities about both attendance and permission to stay during any gap between arrangements.
- Confirm the child’s current pass and its expiry or cancellation date.
- Tell the school when the change is expected and whether the date is final.
- Use ICA’s instructions for the child’s type of school.
- Ask what happens if the new application is still pending near the end date.
- Keep the confirmed dates and instructions accessible to both caregivers.
Put the school and pass dates on the same page
Start with the official record for the child, including the pass type and validity. A parent’s work or relocation date may affect family plans, but record the effective date for the child separately. If the employer or sponsor only expects a change and has yet to confirm it, tell the school the date is provisional. Ask when you should update the school again.
Next, add any dates the school gives you for documents, enrolment checks or pass processing. Write down which adult will handle each task. If siblings attend different schools or have different passes, use a separate row for each child. This keeps one student’s confirmation from being mistaken for the family’s shared status.

Ask what the school needs to do
ICA publishes different application procedures for different educational institutions. Open the category that applies to the child’s school and ask its office which steps it handles. Provide the details the school requests through its official channel. Ask how it will confirm that its part is complete and what the family must do next.
An example enquiry is: “My child is currently enrolled in [level] and studies on a Dependant’s Pass expected to end on [date]. Could you tell us whom to contact about the Student’s Pass process, what documents the school needs and what to do if the date changes?”

Make a plan for any gap
If the current pass is approaching its end and the new application is still pending, ask the authorities which instructions apply to your child’s stay and studies. Give the actual expiry or cancellation date, the application reference and any travel plans. Ask the school what attendance arrangements it can confirm while the family resolves the immigration question.
Record the answer, its date and which office gave it. If instructions refer to specific dates or documents, copy them to the family calendar exactly. Check again if the employer changes the cancellation timing or the child’s circumstances change. A pending application is useful to track, while approval and the effective permission it confers require confirmation.

Worked example
A parent learns that a work arrangement is ending and the child’s Dependant’s Pass will be affected. The family asks when the child’s pass will actually end and contacts the school with the expected date. The school points them to the procedure for its institution type. The family prepares the requested records while waiting for the final date.
When the date is confirmed, they check it against the Student’s Pass process and ask what the child should do if the timing overlaps. They keep the instructions with the application reference and tell the child which school routine is confirmed for the coming week.

Frequently asked questions
Does every child on a Dependant’s Pass need a Student’s Pass now?
ICA lists an exemption for holders of specified valid passes or orders who meet the conditions for full-time, non-religious studies. Check the current ICA guidance for your child’s circumstances.
What if we only have an expected cancellation date?
Tell the school what you know and identify the date as provisional. Ask what preparation can begin and when a confirmed date is needed.
Can the school confirm permission to stay in Singapore?
Ask the school about enrolment, attendance and the steps it handles. Use the relevant immigration authority for confirmation about the child’s permission to stay.
