SEAB’s published GCE guidance allows private candidates to register for more than one GCE examination level, giving O-Level and A-Level as an example. Check that each intended entry is available in the examination year and that you meet the eligibility requirements for each level.
The O-Level example comes from GCE guidance. From 2027, the SEC replaces the secondary GCE N- and O-Level examinations. If your intended combination includes SEC, check the current instructions and ask SEAB about that exact combination.
- List the two qualifications and examination year.
- Check eligibility and subject availability for each entry.
- Review all paper dates and component requirements.
- Check how the receiving institution will use the results.
Check each entry separately
Look up the subjects offered to private candidates at each level. Check age, subject caps and any prerequisites. Two qualifications can have different conditions even if the subjects have similar names.
For example, someone considering an O-Level and A-Level entry under the published GCE arrangement would check each qualification’s age rule and subject list separately. For a later year, first confirm which qualifications are offered.

Build one calendar for both qualifications
List each written, practical, oral and listening component where applicable. Use your personalised notices as they become available. If you see a conflict, ask SEAB which arrangement applies. The GCE timetable clash guide explains the published 2026 secondary GCE example.
Check deadlines and fees before paying. Keep the entry confirmation for each qualification so you can identify it when an entry proof or examination notice is issued.

Check your reason for taking both
Ask the employer or institution which qualification, subjects and years it accepts. Permission to register for two examinations does not decide how the results will be used for an application.
