SEAB’s secondary GCE and A-Level rules say it may withhold results until investigations are completed if it suspects an examination rule was breached. If you receive an official notice saying your results are withheld, read it carefully and use the contact and response instructions it gives.
If the portal simply shows an error or the results do not appear, check the release window and official notices. A technical problem and an official withholding notice require different follow-up.
- Check whether you have an official withholding notice.
- Record the examination, year and notice reference.
- Follow any response instructions and deadlines in the notice.
- Ask the school or SEAB about the status if the next step is unclear.
Read the notice before drawing a conclusion
The published rule allows withholding while investigations are ongoing. Use the actual notice to understand what SEAB is asking you to do. Keep a copy and record when it arrived.
If the notice requests information, respond through the stated channel and keep an acknowledgement. Ask the school or SEAB for clarification if the scope or timing is unclear.

How to distinguish a portal error
If you see an error message when trying to open results, note the exact message and check for service announcements. A login or display problem does not establish that a result has been withheld.
For system errors, use the Candidates Portal results error guide for SEAB’s retry and support instructions.

If an application deadline is approaching
Contact the receiving institution promptly, explain that the result is unavailable and ask what documentation or next steps it accepts. Check any deadlines separately. Follow SEAB’s official instructions for the examination issue itself.
