Starting University After Polytechnic? Check Whether Your Tuition Grant Bond Needs Deferment

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

If you received an MOE Tuition Grant for your polytechnic diploma and plan to study full time after graduating, check whether you must apply to defer your bond. MOE’s bond-deferment guidance says an application is required for further full-time studies in certain cases. Use the instructions for your next programme and funding arrangement, and confirm what applies before you rely on a later start to the bond.

Have your polytechnic grant agreement, degree offer, expected study dates and any information about the next programme’s funding ready. If MOE requires a banker’s guarantee for the deferment, ask which amount, wording and validity it requires before arranging one. Keep the university response and MOE decision separate.

  • Find the agreement for your polytechnic Tuition Grant.
  • Record the next institution, programme, study dates and funding.
  • Ask MOE whether your case requires a deferment application.
  • Follow the portal and banker’s guarantee instructions if applicable.
  • Save the confirmed decision and check what to report when plans change.

Find the agreement and identify the next programme

Start with your existing grant record and agreement. Note the diploma completion date and the contact information held in the Tuition Grant and Scholarships system. Then record your proposed university, whether the degree is full time, where it is taught, its start and expected end dates, and whether you intend to take up any grant for it.

If your degree offer is conditional, note which conditions remain and when you expect confirmation. If you are deciding between two programmes, write out both separately. MOE can tell you which procedure applies when it has the facts for the intended programme.

Confirm whether you need to apply

Open the current MOE bond-deferment guidance for further studies. If the instructions leave a question about your funding arrangement or institution, ask the Tuition Grant Section which rule applies. Give the existing grant and the next course details. An offer from a university confirms an admissions decision or its conditions. Any treatment of the existing bond comes through the grant process.

If you must apply, use the official portal, follow the current evidence requirements and save the reference. If a banker’s guarantee is required, confirm the details before asking a bank to prepare it. Ask MOE when the guarantee or other evidence must arrive and how you will know the request has been decided.

Keep the offer deadline and the bond decision visible

Make a calendar with the degree response deadline, expected diploma completion, next course start and any deferment deadline. If these dates do not line up, contact the university about its acceptance rules and MOE about the bond. Keep the confirmed answers beside the original dates. If the university changes the intake or the degree length, ask MOE whether you need to update the request.

When you receive a decision, read which period it covers and what must happen when studies end or change. Keep any guarantee and correspondence accessible. If there is a later reporting requirement, put it on the calendar so that it survives a change of institution or contact address.

Worked example

A graduate is choosing between a local degree and a degree overseas. They open the polytechnic grant record, write down the study dates and funding for each offer and ask MOE which procedure would apply to the option they plan to take. Once the decision is made, they complete any required request through the official portal.

They check the university’s acceptance deadline separately and keep MOE’s confirmation in the grant folder. If the course start moves, they know which office to tell and which documents may need to be updated.
