If algebra makes sense in class but falls apart when you work alone, you may be recognising the method rather than controlling it independently. Watching a teacher’s steps reduces the decisions you have to make. Alone, you must retrieve the rule, choose the first move, hold symbols accurately, and notice when a step has gone wrong.
Practise by fading support. First complete examples with only a small hint, then explain each step without copying, then solve a similar question from a blank page. If you repeatedly fail at the same algebraic move—fractions, signs, factorisation, rearrangement, or equations—repair that component before increasing difficulty.
