Civilisation Sensor: Narrative–Reality Drift (Canonical)

Narrative–Reality Drift Sensor measures the gap between:

  • what is said
    and
  • what is real

This is the truth-propagation sensor.

When drift is low:

  • feedback is accurate
  • coordination is cheap
  • repair targets real causes
  • civilisation stays stable

When drift is high:

  • truth becomes distorted
  • decision-making becomes blind
  • repairs become cosmetic
  • coordination cost rises
  • CDI accelerates

Drift is how systems collapse while still believing they are fine.


What This Sensor Measures

Drift Sensor measures five types of truth failure:

  1. measurement distortion
  • numbers are gamed
  • reporting replaces reality
  1. incentive-driven lying
  • people say what is rewarded, not what is true
  1. punished feedback
  • truth-tellers are punished
  • bad news is suppressed
  1. narrative substitution
  • stories replace causality
  • slogans replace diagnosis
  1. public–private split
  • everyone knows reality privately
  • but repeats narrative publicly

Drift is not “propaganda only”.
Drift can exist even in good systems when incentives misalign.


How to Read This Sensor

Drift is healthy (low) when:

  • facts are discussable
  • feedback can travel upward
  • mistakes are admitted early
  • metrics match lived reality
  • accountability exists
  • policies change based on outcomes
  • people can disagree without fear

Drift is rising when:

  • speech becomes cautious and coded
  • metrics look great but reality worsens
  • whistleblowers are punished
  • institutions deny obvious failures
  • narratives become increasingly emotional
  • “trust us” replaces evidence
  • people stop believing official explanations

Drift rising is usually followed by rising coordination costs.


Minimum Viable Test (So Drift Can Be Measured)

A civilisation passes the minimum drift test when:

  1. bad news can be spoken safely
  2. measurement cannot be easily gamed
  3. errors are admitted and repaired
  4. recurrence declines
  5. independent feedback channels exist

If bad news cannot travel, drift is high.


Drift Levels (Gauge Alignment)

Level 1 — Low Drift

  • feedback integrity high
  • truth travels
  • repair is accurate

Level 2 — Mild Drift

  • some narrative pressure
  • but core truth still flows

Level 3 — High Drift

  • incentives distort reporting
  • bad news is suppressed
  • repair becomes mis-targeted

Level 4 — Severe Drift

  • narratives dominate
  • reality is denied
  • trust collapses
  • coordination becomes expensive

Level 5 — Reality Split (Pre-Fracture)

  • public narrative and lived reality diverge sharply
  • decisions become blind
  • repair fails
  • instability becomes likely

Reality split is a major fracture signature.


The One Mistake This Sensor Prevents

Many systems think they are stable because they have confident narratives.

But stability is not confidence.
Stability is accurate feedback + successful repair.

Drift Sensor prevents “confidence collapse” — when people lose belief suddenly because reality was ignored too long.


Repair Actions (If Drift Is Rising)

  1. protect feedback channels
    Truth must travel without punishment.
  2. fix incentive architecture
    Reward accurate reporting, not appearances.
  3. use recurrence as truth test
    If failure repeats, narrative is wrong.
  4. increase measurement transparency
    Make gaming harder.
  5. restore accountability
    Outcomes must matter more than statements.

Drift is repaired by truth flow, not stronger narratives.
